ATHENS — Good morning. Before we get to the game, I have a small request: Let’s be civil.
I understand emotions (and beer) often cause sports fans to jump the rails a little bit. Because we will have both Georgia and Georgia Tech fans on this blog, the chance for a verbal inferno becomes even greater.
But the same rules apply: no profanity, no profanity that is cleverly disguised with punctuation marks, no racist comments, no sexual innuendo, no stealing of screen names to give the impression that somebody wrote something when they really didn’t, no … well, you get the idea. You can praise, mock, laud and criticize all you like. But let me share something an old editor of mine once told me: If you have to ask, “Can I write this?” the answer is probably no.
Fair enough?
OK, onto the game. Georgia and Georgia Tech is, first and foremost, always about 364 days of bragging rights. But it’s so much more than that today.
– Georgia needs a win to keep hopes alive for a berth in the BCS title. That’s also contingent on the Bulldogs upsetting Alabama in the SEC championship game next week. The Dogs would still play for the conference title even if they were to be upset by the Jackets. But obviously a lot of steam would come out of the game, and certainly it would deflate the fan base.
– Georgia Tech needs a win for a credibility boost and, in that sense. It also would give Jackets fans some hope for the ACC championship game against Florida State and/or a better bowl game. Tech has won three straight. But it has been a largely rocky season and they slipped into the Coastal Division title and a conference championship berth through the backdoor, benefiting from Miami’s decision to bow out in hopes of minimizing expected NCAA sanctions.
Georgia fans have reason to be concerned: Even though the Dogs have shown themselves to be the better and more talented team, there’s a possibility of players being distracted by all of the SEC and BCS talk.
Georgia Tech fans have reason to be concerned: Even with the late-season bounce back and the added skills that quarterback Vad Lee brings to the lineup, the Jackets’ defense hasn’t stopped anybody. Georgia has a balanced offense led by quarterback Aaron Murray (12 touchdowns, zero interceptions since the fourth quarter against Florida) and freshman running backs Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall.
Bottom line: This is a rivalry game, and strange things often occur in rivalry games. At the risk of sounding cliche, I suspect Tech’s best chance to win today will be based on turnovers and winning the special teams battle. Georgia probably also doesn’t want to get into a scoring battle (as was the case in 2008, when the Jackets won 45-42). Red zone production is key for both teams.

Tech in a 57-54 upset, thanks to the benefit of 5 UGA turnovers and a poorly played defensive effort. However, mostly because UGA ALWAYS chokes when everything is on the line. They are the Ohio State of this era. Always in the top 5 and never in the discussion at the end of the season. UGA watches their title hopes die again as 1980 gets further and further away.

Tech has nothing to lose, which is why this game is dangerous for UGA. South Carolina showed that it doesn’t matter what level of talent they have, that if something is on the line, UGA is perfectly capable of disappearing. On paper UGA should kill Tech, but that’s not what will happen.

The best thing so far . . . the Dawgs came out strong and firing on all cylinders, both offense and defense. They seem to have shaken off the start of the game doldrums since the Florida game. They have a chance to get past Alabama and to the championship game if they continue to play up to their potential.

This game is the epitome of the state of GT football. Can we move the ball against top-level competition? YES. Can we rack up 400 yards rushing against top-level competition? YES. Can we consistently win football games? NO. As much as it pains me to admit it, GT will NEVER even sniff a national championship under Paul Johnson. If you are happy with rushing for 400 yards a game and losing 3-4 games EVERY year, then he’s your man. I believe it is time for a change. This offense, running on all cylinders, Paul Johnson’s BEST team has no chance of a BCS national championship. Zero.

I’ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team. When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the Damon Evans fiasco, players beating up women, players urinating in public, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup win, and on and on?
As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school that decent people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.
Will it never end? Apparently not while Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is the biggest hypocrite in the United States. But even with all the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still can’t win the SEC.
So you’re paying him to be BCS champions, but he can’t even win the SEC. So why do you pay him millions of dollars a year?

That being said, MOST of the football team, other than their QB are partial qualifiers who can barely spell their own names. CPJ need to send up the white flag, we are outclassed like I knew we would be. Just like next week we will be outclassed. Vadd does throw a nice ball, with a little practice he might throw it to our guy. We have given GA three scores, fumble on the one, goes for 4th and 5, on the 50, then we throw to their guy. Just think if our offense didn’t play, the score would only be 7 to 0.

Yankee- Not CFB agnostic, just not a fan of either of these two. I like these boards because I find the comments entertaining. Watching because the game has National significance and Georgia is my big pick in my pool.
They weren’t veiled slams. I find a lot of Georgia fans to be unwilling to honestly assess their team (nice way to say delusional). That being said this offense is capable of taking them all the way and as much as I slammed Grantham he is a social butterfly compared to that curmudgeon coaching Tech.
I am astounded that some don’t want to send him packing. I guess same folks who defended D Rad because he raised some bucks while leading once fine basketball and football programs into the abyss.

Bama’s defense will be good, but their secondary sucks…and if our O-line comes to play, we’ll beat Bama. Hate to tell you, with this loss, the winning record of the teams UGA has beat… 49-65? Figuring on a UF loss and not taking into account some of the other losses the teams UGA beat will have today, such as Missouri and such.

All I can say for Tech this offseason is that something has to change weather its coaching or players. This D is beyond pathetic, Im not even sure they are playing. The offense has its good days and bad days, but they for sure can’t take up all the slack from the D. If this team was as excited the play as they said last week, they would have shown it today.

Been watching Tech since forever. My father and I are both alums, and the plain fact is this team is terrible. There is no comparison in talent level. I don’t expect us to have the depth that the mutts do, but for goodness sake, their 3rd team is better than anything we have. They say PJ doesn’t like to recruit, and it must be true because we don’t have very many D-1 level players. Embarrassing!!!!

This is absolutely laughable and was over after the first quarter. The only rivalry part is the fact they are in the same state. Not sure if they are even a good warm-up for next week. If the Bugs hurry, they can get a last second spot in the high school playoffs. But that would last about as long as this game.
I can’t believe any tech fan would think they actually had a shot here. Very evident that Georgia is far superior…always has been…..always will be. Good luck representing ACC at 6-6. Techies need to pick some other word or phrase besides rivalry……like “annual beat down.”

The producers of the upcoming musical drama Isaiah and Me will be holding tryouts soon in Athens. The show will be a poignant re-creation of UGA coach Mark Richt’s wooing of uber-talented high school star Isaiah Crowell, Crowell’s triumphant arrival in Athens, his ups and downs, and his ultimate downfall and estrangement from Richt, who he looked upon as a father figure.
The highly acclaimed Bobby Petrino has already signed to play the role of Mark Richt. Said Petrino, “Mark Richt and I are so much alike that it will be easy for me to play him on stage.” When asked about this, Richt gave the reporter a blessing and replied, “No comment,” but Richt has hinted to associates that he’s tickled pink to have a quality coach playing him.
Coach Rodney Garner will be played by the Goodyear blimp. Coach Todd Grantham will be played by Jackie Sherrill, and Coach Mike Bobo will be played by Bozo the Clown, who’s on loan from Ringling Brothers Circus.
Several current UGA players were considered for the role of Isaiah Crowell, but none of them were able to read the script without assistance, so this role is still open. Rumors are circulating that Cam Newton wants the role, but his dad insists on the cash up front.
Other roles to be cast include several of Isaiah’s girlfriends and some of his homeboys. Those trying out for girlfriend roles must be suitably trashy-looking and should be able to speak fluent Ebonics. Homeboys should have the same qualities, and should be familiar with trashtalk and handguns, as well as the proper way to roll a blunt.
This is a great opportunity for budding thespians, so don’t miss your chance to be immortalized on stage.

My thoughts:
1. Fire coaching genius Paul Johnson. There is absolutely no excuse for having a defense this bad. Any truly talented head coach should be able to do a better job.
2. Hire a new head coah who will install an offense that will be pass happy. You would be able to attract some of the quality QBs coming out of GA high schools and who may actually want to play at the next level. This would also allow you to attract some quality WRs like you did when you ran a pro set. Finally, you could still attract the same level of RBs you do now.

@Grinch, Michael Johnson… yeah that should be the clear way forward… except that Radakovich screwed up by gift-wrapping Paul Johnson a contract extension and a hefty 10 million buyout… cash we do not have to get rid of him. Also Radakovich bungled our only success… the ACC title had to be vacated because of his poor handling of the situation.

It’s really sad that UGA alumni and fans have only their football team to take pride in. It’s even sadder that this pride depends on the performance of illiterate clowns who don’t even come close to meeting minimum academic requirements. 84% of UGA football players are what UGA calls “special admits,” which is just a euphemism for admitting bozos who can’t even read.
This sorry practice not only cheapens all UGA degrees (which are pretty worthless to begin with), but embarrasses the State of Georgia and its citizens. And Mark Richt is the one behind the atrocities at UGA.
So enjoy your victories, and be kind to your former players when you see them working menial jobs in custodial or sanitation services. Or pushing a shopping cart around, looking for a warm place to sleep at night. That’s your UGA reality.

Richard Samuels is not a bust. He should have been playing LB his whole career at UGA where he would have flourished. He made sacrifices to help UGA when I think he should have said, “No”. The coaches used Samuels and did not have his best interest in mind. As a UGA grad., I hate saying that but it is true.

If I were a Tech fan…. and thank God I’m not…. I would be ready to cut ties to Paul Johnson. What a loser. And worse than that… a pompeous loser. Yeah your offense is ‘unique’, but if it were that great Air Force and Navy would be winning championships.

It’s time for CPJ to simply resign. The football teams have become worse during his tenure. That GT represents the ACC Coastal is an embarrassement to FSU, I’m sure. Once again we got our AZZZES handed to us. The talent level is so obvious even a UGA fan can see it. It’s going to be like this until we get a “retard” major and can recruit the same talent as the factories. Don’t give me the Stanford and Notre Dame argument either. They have “urban studies” majors and programs that require very little if any math. Not an excuse, just a fact. We will never beat the mutts on a regular basis until we let that caliber of student in. The sad thing for the mutts is, they will let anybody in if they’re good enough and STILL can’t win anything important!!

Noticed two big facts today the little I watched of this boring game. GT is undersized and outclassed. UGA made a lot of dirty thuggish plays that should have been penalties. Bad playing undersized boys have no chance against thugs. Looking at stats, surprised GT didnt put up at least 30 points though. Glad I didnt watch much of the game. yawn….

@DantheMan: The evidence is in the “new” fields of study offered by the big universities. Sports Management, Urban Studies, and the like have offered easy paths to big time athletes to be able to stay in school. I never said you need calculus to be successful, you don’t. But you do have to take calculus if you go to Tech, no way around it and that is a hinderance to a lot of kids who don’t want to have to bother with the work. Of course everyone has a different talents. Unfortunately, the talent of playing football and the desire to learn calculus don’t often coincide. I know I wouldn’t have taken it if I hadn’t had to!! lol

You Tech guys make me laugh when you talk about the academics for Tech football. Makes me laugh. To suggest that Tech athletes are on par with their regular students is laughable. Georgia had a better % of on track graduates than Tech did in football. There are enough soft majors at Tech for athletes to recruit whomever they need. The problem is the staff, the inability to recruit good players, and the inability to have a supportive fan base/alumni group. If you guys can’t compete maybe you should not play football.
