Dogs accept Governor's Cup after the win, but they're after something bigger. (Brant Sanderlin)
ATHENS – This is new ground. Or, more accurately, new air.
Georgia had never reached this elevation before under Mark Richt — not in BCS ranking at this point of the season, not in perception of championship potential.
It didn’t feel like this even during those two SEC titles early in Richt’s tenure, when Georgia already had been cropped out of the national pictured. It wasn’t this real when a Sugar Bowl win left the Bulldogs with a postseason ranking of No. 2, after they already had been leapfrogged in the BCS and left out of the national title game.
Never before in late November under Richt could we look at Georgia and legitimately think: That team can win it all.
Now we can.
Georgia didn’t just beat Georgia Tech on Saturday. It humiliated the Jackets 42-10. The tilt on the scoreboard would have been even greater if Richt hadn’t pulled starters with more than 10 minutes left in the game.
The Dogs led 7-0 after one minute, 14-0 after six minutes, 28-3 at halftime. They made touchdown drives look like wind sprints, ranging in elapsed time from 29 seconds to 2:42. They dominated the game physically. When is the last time Georgia played with that level of urgency?
Linebacker Alec Ogletree and Georgia's defense have had a lot of reasons to celebrate lately. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)
This team is playing with an edge it hasn’t for years. It has beaten its last four opponents (Ole Miss, Auburn, Georgia Southern, Tech) by scores of 37-10, 38-0, 45-14 and 42-10. That’s a composite dismembering of 162-34, give or take a limb.
Please, don’t come back with: “But look who they’re playing?”
Georgia has seldom stepped on opponents like this, certainly not in November when everybody, fans and pollsters, are watching.
With the score 42-3 Saturday, offensive coordinator Mike Bobo still could be seen and heard screaming in the coach’s box when things didn’t go well, at one point yelling into his headset, “Get your [bleep] off the field!” after the offense went three-and-out and players walked (not ran) to the sideline.
“Yeah, my dad texted me,” Bobo said later, somewhat sheepishly. “I guess he heard it on radio or TV. But you’re playing in Sanford Stadium. You should at least run off the field.”
Does this seem like the same Georgia team to you?
It was apparent after the win over Auburn: The Dogs are good enough to beat Alabama for the SEC championship. They are good enough to win its first national championship since 1980. They can pass: Aaron Murray has 14 touchdown passes, zero interceptions since the fourth quarter against Florida. They can run: Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall combined for 163 yards, four touchdowns and no carries for losses against Tech, and continue to look more like veterans than freshmen.
Most important, the defense, which had been expected to carry the Dogs all season, only to struggle early with suspensions and injuries and maybe a little bit of day-dreaming about the NFL, now is playing up to expectations.
This isn’t the same team that suffered so many hiccups in the first eight games. It’s certainly not the same team that lost at South Carolina 35-7, which prompted an egg assault on the home of some players and attacks via social media.
“At the end of the season, we might say that game helped us,” Marshall said.
“It was definitely an eye-opener,” linebacker Jarvis Jones said.
“This team is different. This team has something to it,” linebacker Christian Robinson said.
And then this: “I’m just glad my house is safe right now.”
This is the not same defense that was called out as being “soft” by senior strong safety Shawn Williams. Most agree he was on target with his comments, even if he was wrong to throw selected teammates (like Robinson) under the bus.
Richt said his team’s defensive leaders, most of whom passed up the chance to enter the NFL after last season “had a vested interest in his this season went.” He then added, “When Shawn Williams saw it slipping away, he felt he had to say something about it. He challenged everybody. He couldn’t stand what he was seeing. But I think everybody respected him for what he did. They may have not liked what he did but I think they agreed with it.”
Last year, Georgia reached the SEC championship game against No. 1 LSU. They led 10-0 after the first quarter, then gave up the next 42 points.
“We’re a different team,” Jones said. “We feel like we can beat anybody.”
They certainly look the part.

Bear,
If you compare Gurley and Marshall’s numbers to Lacy and Yeldon, the totals are almost identical. Carries, yards, TD’s etc. Defenses are comparable(since GA got their stuff together). Offensively, I would like to give the edge to Georgia, but its real close. I think the fact that Murray has been spreading the ball around to 7-10 different receivers per game is a challenge for the Alabama D. He is throwing to the open receivers, not locking on to one guy and predetermining the route he’s gonna throw too. Our Tight Ends have really emerged and can create a mismatch. our fullbacks have played well. i gotta feel we have the better receiving corps, despite 2 of our best guys out. i like the way our linebackers, corners and safeties cover and hit and take the ball away. I think this is gonna be a helluva football game. Georgia has come together as a TEAM this year. And we have a legitimate running attack and a fantastic defense(isnt that the formula?) That’s how Bama plays every year (except during all those years you sucked before Saban resurrected the program after Mike Shula and the others.. Lol). College football goes in cycles. It’s about emotion and momentum and seizing the opportunity.
I give Bama the slight edge on playing disciplined,(Georgia has improved this), experience from the last 2 years, and coaching. Saban is tough, and he will have them focused & ready to play
Obviously, we can’t both win, so good luck, and go Dawgs!
P.S. media darling Notre dame would be Vegas underdogs to the following teams:
1. Bama
2. Georgia
3. Florida
4. A&M (maybe playing the best football of anyone right now?)
5. LSU
6. South Carolina- (pick em?)
It reminds me of the time when (insert SEC team here) completely dominated the opponent (insert Ohio State twice, Oklahoma, Texas, Oregon).
I do worry about the refs in a Notre Dame game. But really, just looking forward to playing Bama and seeing my team play for a shot at another SEC Championship right now. Keep em focused on Bama coach, not BCS. We have 5 weeks to dream about the BCS if we manage to win our conference. against bama… It’s BCS National title game or something like the Peach Bowl. One game focus. It’s all or nada .

Anybody see that hit by Fairley against Tech? He was wearing Ogletree’s jersey and piledrove a guy.. The crowd loved it. Remember when Fairley beat UGA’s collective brains in.. Oh how the Ga faithful screamed to high heaven.. Like was said then, “If he was on your team, you’d love him!” UGA: living on hypocracy and preseason rankings since 1980 (for young fans who’ve never seen a NC, that was the last Ga team to meet their potential). I’ll be rooting for Ga next week but Bama’s defense will force you to egg and roll your QB’s house for the 2nd time this season. I couldn’t fathom egging my QB’s house in a season where my team controlled it’s own destiny to a long-awaited NC.. Shameful! Tech has a NC in the past 25 years, only one FBS school in GA can claim a NC in that period… and you consider yourself better than Tech.. if it helps you sleep at night. Wouldn’t want you to lose sleep and come in late to work forcing your Tech-grad boss to fire you.. You don’t, and won’t, understand but I’ll try: UGA fans care about beating Tech in football to mask their whoopings from Tech in life (not the board game.. but prob that too).

Schultz, Don’t write an article then attempt a squelch to a valid argument with the statement; “Please, don’t come back with: “But look who they’re playing?” ” You say, it was apparent after the win over Auburn the Dawgs are good enough to beat Bama. Really ? …. Tech’s defense is a pathetic wreck and we could go on and on, but I digress. The Dawgs are loaded with talent, but where is the signature win over a quality opponent. I guess you would argue the Florida game, which was one of the ugliest college football games of the year. Pound your chest all week and enjoy it. But 35-7 is 35-7. But Bobo cursed. David Greene :
11,528 yards 72 TD passes 849 completions of 1,440 attempts 2001-4
SEC Career TD Passes :
115 TD passes career Danny Wuerffel, Florida 46 games
89 TD passes career Aaron Murray, UGA 39 games*active
89 TD passes career Peyton Manning, vols 44 games
88 TD passes career Chris Leak, Florida 51 games
88 TD passes career Tim Tebow, Florida 55 games
You would ( or as Georgie tek fan posted yesterday “wood” ) have thought that Florida would have had known at the time that they both were only 1 TD pass career worse than Peyton Manning in The SEC ? Chris Leak or GPOE Tim Tebow, whom I told you would never make it in NFL as a Quarterback, maybe a linebacker I suggested or even a running back, could have and should have beat Peyton Manning for 2nd Place in The SEC All-Time.
134 TD Passes Graham Harrell, Texas Tech 2005-2008
# 1 in nation QB Rating NCAA FBS Aaron Murray 177.15
89 TD passes career Aaron Murray, UGA 39 games 2nd SEC All-Time
- if he comes back 2012 plays 14 games at this avg 16 more games, 125 TD if he has 15 more games (no SEC Championship Game) at this avg, 123 TD
It is said that Aaron Murray had a horrible game against the stout defense of # 4 in the nation Florida who utterly destroyed ACC CHUMPionship contender FSU Flawed State Criminoles. The facts of the game are that Aaron Murray directed and game managed UGA at the beginning of the game for a TD by Todd Gurley and that late in the game, to put the game away, Aaron Murray again tried to let Todd Gurley carry us to the Best Win of the Mark Richt era, stealing the national championship from Florida which would have been their 4th in 17 years; but, that Florida would have none of that, and so Aaron Murray put this team on his shoulders and willed this team into the end zone on the 49-yard TD Pass to Malcolm Mitchell with the great downfield block by TE Artie Lynch to spring him into the end zone. Florida was able to accomplish NEITHER the opening TD, nor the TD Pass at the end of the game; yet, Aaron Murray gained his Signature Win. Would Florida beat Alabama ? Sure they would. Florida beat # 7 LSU same as Alabama, but also beat # 10 South Carolina, and # 8 Texas A & M whom Alabama LOST to, and for good measure throws in their win tonight over probably about # 15 FSU.
_______________________________________
Florida would wipe the floor with Alabama 2012

Florida will not play in the BCS NC Title Game 2012. Georgia’s Defense stole it away from them, taking 8 balls from what would have been NC 2012 Florida. Of the 8 take-aways by UGA Defense 2012, 11 of whom will be drafted in the next NFL Draft, our Defense beat Florida to 6 of the 8 UGA take-aways.
You don’t win every game against the nation’s # 1 team, or even win every game against the nation’s actual-earned final Top 10 teams for that season.
Aaron Murray has beat Florida, who is the NC 2012. They don’t get to play for it, but there is no doubt the world knows Florida would eat Alabama up and spit them out.
Alabama has NO WIN to compare to Florida with only having beat # 7 LSU.
Alabama win (s) vs Final BCS Rankings :
# 7 LSU
Florida wins vs Final BCS Rankings :
# 7 LSU
# 8 Texas A & M
# 10 South Carolina
# 15 Florida State
Did I mention Florida BEAT Texas A & M and Alabama LOST to them as I guaranteed.
If Alabama is the # 1 team in the nation, as is being billed, they are just not calling it like it is, now are they ?
SEC East worse than SEC West ?
Really ? Based on what ?
# 2 Alabama West
# 3 Georgia East
# 4 Florida East
# 7 LSU West
# 8 Texas A & M West
# 10 South Carolina East
I see 3 SEC East in Final BCS top 10 after 4pm Saturday Georgia Dome
I see 3 SEC West in Final BCS top 10 after 4pm Saturday Georgia Dome
I see 2 of the top 4 BCS teams SEC East
That’s 2 of the top 5.
I don’t see 2 of the top 5 SEC West, do you ?
As a matter of fact, Vandie is a tough team with their 34-point SEC over ACC win to shut-out the All Cupcake Conference on this day, SEC 4, ACC – 0 – . 8-4 Vandie, will they make a top 25 poll ? If they do, Mississippi State is certainly not going to be ranked. And, Ole Miss is certainly not making any top 25 poll either, now are they ?
No.
SEC West is not better than SEC East 2012.
It’s not true.
Florida is not playing Alabama.
We earned that right by taking those 8 balls away. Curious how sometimes, it is written Florida gave the game away the night Molly passed. And, how sometimes it is written UGA’s stout defense took the ball from Florida 8 times with 11 NFL Draft Picks in the up-coming draft with perhaps again the # 1 overall draft pick and another top 5 draft pick if the injury is not serious and maybe with four 1st Round NFL Draft Picks, certainly 3 of the top 10 picks and just as certainly 11 from the defense alone draft picks in the next NFL Draft.
Either way, Alabama would not and did not beat Florida’s Defense. Aaron Murray did that, and AJ McCarron is NO Aaron Murray.
13,255 career passing yards 123 TD passes Aaron Murray if he returns 2013.
UGA’s offense is most certainly NOT Florida’s offense with Mark Richt’s true freshmen running backs.
Todd Gurley plays on Sundays barring injury and is a 1st Round maybe top NFL Draft Selection himself.
Chris Conley and Malcolm Mitchell play on Sundays at WR.
UGA has 2 TE Artie Lynch and Jay Rome.
UGA’s Offensive Line ? How good does it have to be with Aaron Murray and Todd Gurley ?
I ask you ?
Name me the Alec Ogletree on Alabama ?
Name me the Jarvis Jones on Alabama ?
Name me the Bacarri Rambo on Alabama ?
Alabama does not have Steve Spurrier making the play calls 2012, but a guy Nick Saban hired at the last moment, in a rush – a complete nobody.

Alabama is not scoring any more than 24 points on UGA, and I don’t think that many.
Alabama is not stopping UGA from scoring 27 points on Alabama.
14 carries a game is all Todd Gurley has had to work 2012.
Todd Gurley 1,138 yards 14 TD rushing, another catch a game 1 TD
Alabama does not have Florida’s Defense. Alabama has beat only LSU.
This game will be determined on the field.

Congrats to all the Dawg players on a big win that keeps them on course for the Big Prize they all came back to get.
The gap between Georgia and Georgia Tech widens each year–and that’s mainly because CPJ cannot recruit. The Gailey recruits that helped him beat Georgia that first season are long gone. Thankfully, so is Willie Martinez.
Bama is a fine football team. They are well-coached and highly disciplined. They make very few mistakes. The Dawgs match up with them talent-wise, but are not as deep. We’lll have to play our best game of the season to win the SEC title next week and earn our spot in the BCS title game. We will certainly not blow out Alabama. Honestly, I don’t know where those of you who are posting that are getting your irrational exuberance from.
That being said, I think the intangibles in the SECCG favor Georgia. We have a great group of seniors who are highly motivated and will play lights out. We have a talented defense that has played as well as any defense in the country over the past month, allowing only ~ 9 ppg during that span of five games. The team is hungry to wash the bitter taste of last year’s SEC title game out of their mouths. Whether this translates into on-the-field success remains to be seen.
Finally, whichever SEC team wins next Saturday will win the BCS title. That’s the one thing I am most certain of.

Aaron Murray
9,399 yards passing 39 games 241 yards per game
89 Touchdown Passes 2.28 per game another 9 rushing TD
2013 :
If SEC Championship Game : 39 now (+2 more ‘12) + 14 in 2013
13,255 yards passing
125 Touchdown Passes 2.28 per game another 12 rushing TD
Aaron Murray will be # 1 in The SEC All-Time in TD Passes and within 9 of record all-time.
Aaron Murray today is # 1 in the nation in QB Rating.
1-10 vs made AP Poll Top 25 mostly made Top 10 but beat Florida HIMSELF by scoring 2 TD on a better defense Florida has than Alabama has, just that Alabama has only beat # 7 LSU.
Aaron Murray DROVE the field, game on the line, result in the balance, WILLING Georgia into the end zone to put the game away, after beginning the game scoring a TD on Florida # 5 in the nation defense (compared to AL # 1 in nation defense, but AL beat only # 7 LSU, while FL was 4 times better than AL.)
I am not lobbying for Florida to be # 1 or to play in the semi-final game.
That has already been determined.
I am pointing out that UGA beat Florida on Aaron Murray’s 2 TD vs Florida which Florida COULD NOT SCORE A TD ON UGA’S DEFENSE.
The game will have to be played on the field, but Alabama has lots of short-comings comparing the 2 teams, and Aaron Murray is a Junior with a year ahead of him yet, but already All-America 2012.
AJ McCarron does not compare and in fact, cannot achieve any comparison with Aaron Murray.
Aaron Murray 1 of 10 UGA players who are better than Alabama players at key positions.
1. QB Aaron Murray
2. TB Todd Gurley
3. WR Malcolm Mitchell and Chris Conley
4. LB Jarvis Jones
5. LB Alec Ogletree
6. NG John Jenkins Kwame Geathers
7. FS Bacarri Rambo
There are other players, but Alabama does NOT have better players than these 7 at these key positions.
Alabama is WALK ALL OVER UGA ?
Dream on Alabama.
By the way, all 3 top SEC teams would beat Notre Dame, so too would South Carolina and Texas A & M and LSU, but Notre Dame claims they beat EVERY CONFERENCE 2012.
Excuse me.
Team of Destiny for beating 5-6 LOSING RECORD Pittsburgh in triple over-time making it abundantly clear Notre Dame has NO AARON MURRAY either.
If Alabama thinks they have better players at these 7 key positions, based on what ? Their win over # 7 LSU, because THAT IS ALL THEY HAVE while we beat # 4 Florida who would WIPE THE FLOOR with Alabama. Your arguments are weak, Alabama.

Tony Dungy Would Draft Aaron Murray No. 1
Kristin Bowser – CS Intern
“According to Tony Dungy himself, Aaron Murray is the best option at quarterback if he enters the 2013 NFL draft. When asked who he would take if he were the struggling Kansas City Chiefs, he promptly responded with his answer — UGA quarterback Aaron Murray.”
Tony Dungy✔
@TonyDungy
“@CoachCox8100: @TonyDungy who should chiefs take with first or 2nd pick in the draft?” “I would take Georgia QB Aaron Murray if he comes out”

Mark Richt is passing Southern California for the MOST NFL DRAFT PICKS starting 2001 when Mark Richt got here.
72 NFL Draft Picks Mark Richt 2001 through 2012
74 NFL Draft Picks Southern California 2001 through 2012 vs Mark Richt
11 NFL Draft Picks from the defense alone 2013
10 NFL Draft Picks Southern California will need 2013 to maintain lead vs GA
I still predict another 5 huge big-time recruits join Mark Richt’s # 5 ranked Scout.com recruiting class 2013 from the 29 commitments we have already. Perhaps after the semi-final game Alabama has been in a lot of and UGA well, we just haven’t. Not a question of who is more hungry; it is a matter as always of who wants it more.
You’ve got to want it.
We beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 2002 with David Greene and Aaron Murray is a better quarterback than David Greene.
David Greene beat # 4 vols in 2001 and never beat another team making the top 10.
Aaron Murray beat # 4 F.U. in 2012 and plays # 2 Alabama next game & has senior year
That is if Tony Dungy has nothing to say about it, because Tony Dungy today promised Aaron Murray will go HIGH in the NFL draft 2012.
That means nothing to Aaron Murray, how high he would be drafted 2012. He might decide to go. I still think he needs to perfect his game a little. Not to be better than AJ McCarron, as he is long since better than that already. Aaron Murray has questions and if DJ Shockley and David Greene did not prove to Aaron Murray that where you are drafted is everything, then he still faces sitting and never throwing an NFL pass, as neither DJ Shockley nor David Greene ever did.
Look at Matthew Stafford ?
No. Aaron Murray must come back 2013. The offense has it going on. When Mark Richt signed these 2 freshmen running backs, they assured Mark Richt of great seasons the next 3 seasons : 2012, 2013, and 2014 when both can declare.
By then, with the # 5 recruiting class now and 5 more huge big-time gets coming quickly now for Mark Richt for 2013, we will have reloaded both sides of the ball. I see more players starters playing special teams. We already moved some of the pups ahead of others on defense now 2012, already while they are still here.
Our defense will not be devastated 2013 from losses 2012.
If Aaron Murray didn’t show you anything with those 2 Touchdown drives (and a field goal) against # 5 in the nation defense # 4 in the nation in the polls Florida, then you have no right to post that he played poorly against Florida. He did NOT.
David Greene in 2002 could have gone 1 for the game 3rd Down Conversions against Florida and played Mark Richt into the BCS NC Title Game 2002. He did NOT.
Aaron Murray did. His conversion on 3rd Down vs Florida 2012 to put the game way 17-9 is the difference.

1 made no 3rd Down Conversions 2002.

And, that has made all the difference.
The key to it, is wanting it.
I would not want to be Alabama knowing their 20th national championship is only 1 game away, and have to face Aaron Murray, Todd Gurley, Jarvis Jones, Malcolm Mitchell and Chris Conley, John Jenkins and Kwame Geathers, Bacarri Rambo and Alec Ogletree. Trust me, everyone knows these players are just not matched-up by their counterparts on Alabama’s team.
We do well against Alabama. We always have. With key freshmen 2012 at key positions, Alabama will be better in 2013. But, they have to play us 2012.
You know they do not want to with their 20th NC sitting there staring them in their face against easy Notre Dame, when Notre Dame has no Aaron Murray.
7 NC UGA
20 NC Alabama
It’s 1 or the other. There is no 4th team involved now. Although the 4th team, too, would beat Notre Dame.
SEC Finest Hour 2012 with 6 of the BCS top 10 in just a few hours, one ranking away from the fatal final BCS Rankings 2012.
Who wants to be SEC Champs 2012 ? No regrets ? Our time ? Who wants it ?
Alabama who beat # 7 LSU ?
Georgia who beat # 4 Florida ?
It’s unfair really, when you think about it all. Here’s Notre Dame muddying the water, when the winner at 4 pm ESPN GameDay Saturday should be FORCED to play Florida with their wins over :
# 7 LSU
# 9 Texas A and M
# 10 South Carolina
# 15 FSU (All 4 ACC today down in flames to SEC as I guaranteed.)

I LOVE THAT DOMINATING WIN BY FLORIDA OVER FSU TODAY
_______________________________________________________
That really helps our cause and cements us at # 3. We never cared about Notre Dame vs Southern California; that meant nothing to us, other than we’d prefer and Alabama would prefer to play Notre Dame than Florida.

Well, it was a good season, we did beat all of the sh%#$tty teams. I have said it every week for over ten years, we will never win a NC with Richt. Georgia now has gotten the thought that they can play with the big boys after beating up on some really terrible teams. Now comes a really pi%%ed off Bama team that continually shames us, and it will happen again next week. Everybody’s heart is with Georgia but your money better be on Bama, we are not even close to that caliber of play. And way to go Rambo, call Bama out, as if you weren’t going to be humiliated anyway. The last DECENT team we played clobbered us, and I really think the pollsters and the media are just having fun with us, as they know what is coming. How on earth we got a number 3 ranking is really ludicrous. No Richt, get those diving trunks ready, although it’s a long way to summer. Bama 38, Dawgs 17, unfortunately again.

Wayne you’ve never posted a post on this blog by that handle, ever. Why is that folks who have established no credibility, having never posted as that handle, run in here with LIES ?
Duh Wayne.
I presume # 4 in the nation with the # 5 in the nation defense Florida, who beat # 7 LSU, # 8 Texas A & M, # 10 South Carolina and # 15 about FSU is
WHAT ?
Not a Decent team ?
Run in here hiding behind a handle with NO CREDIBILITY, and you say

B.S. Florida clobbered us. We took the football from them on 8 TAKE-AWAYS and beat Florida to 6 of those 8 balls.
We scored 2 Touchdowns, on drives led by Aaron Murray, against Florida Consensus # 4 who would beat # 1 Notre Dame and # 2 Alabama OBVIOUSLY, while Florida could not score a single TD on us.
If you really think Alabama is scoring 38 points on Georgia, with Alabama having NO AARON MURRAY and NO TODD GURLEY and NO MALCOLM MITCHELL CHRIS CONLEY, us with yes Bacarri Rambo and Jarvis Jones and John Jenkins Kwame Geathers and with Alec Ogletree, you are spending your time posting when you should be reading these comments, Wayne.
And, what is this US crudola ? Since you’ve never posted to this blog EVER with that handle, you have not established in your post, nor in any prior post that there is anything WE about YOU.

How do you feel about that statement in public establishing you as a college football fan, even, Wayne ?
You know NOTHING about college football to make that statement, or that 2012 is a “good season.”
2012 is not a good season. I’ve had seasons’ tickets myself since 1975 and before that my Dad and after that he had them too. 2012 is a GREAT SEASON
