Can you hear SEC commissioner Mike Slive? "Yes, I am king. Are there any questions?" (AP photo)
While it’s easy to understand why any fan of a conference not named the SEC grows tired of hearing and reading about the SEC, the evolution of this year’s conference championship match-ups screams why the landscape is so lopsided.
This came home Monday when Miami announced that the football program was going to self-impose a bowl ban (hoping to beat the NCAA to the punch) and therefore would not accept a bid to the ACC championship game. This allowed Georgia Tech to back through the door as Coastal Division “champions.” The Jackets will face Florida State for the ACC title.
This isn’t meant to pick on Georgia Tech. It’s not the Jackets’ fault they have been given this opportunity, despite a relatively crummy season. But if you want to know why the SEC commands the attention it does, just look at how the ACC and other conference championship games compare.
Here are the conference title games, listed from worst to first:
• BIG EAST: There is no conference championship game because it doesn’t have enough teams (12 is the mandated minimum). Why the Big East is an automatic qualifier in the BCS order of things is beyond logic because it seems to exist only to have its remains picked over by the ACC and Big 12 for their own conference expansion. On a related note: Possible Big East champion Rutgers is considering joining the Big Ten.
• BIG 12: It was forced to cancel its conference championship game after 2010 because the defections of Nebraska (Big Ten) and Colorado (Pacific 12) left the conference with only 10 teams. In other words, the name “Big 12” is a lie! There’s also this: Kansas State, the conference’s best team and No. 1 in the BCS until Saturday, just got flattened by Baylor.
• ACC: The conference championship will match Georgia Tech against Florida State. If the Yellow Jackets lose to Georgia, they will be a 6-6 conference finalist. So much for marquee value. Coastal Division teams Miami and North Carolina are ineligible and usual power Virginia Tech has fallen apart. The Seminoles, winners of the Atlantic, have a nice record (10-1). But they get little love from computers (ranking 17th) and stand only 10th in the BCS. That’s what happens when you lose to North Carolina State and have one win over a ranked team (Clemson).
• BIG TEN: This is very ACC-like. Third-place Wisconsin (4-3, 7-4, with another possible loss this week at Penn State) will represent the “Leaders” Division in the conference championship game. Why? Because Ohio State (7-0, 11-0) and Penn State (5-2, 7-3) both are ineligible. The other finalist will be either Nebraska or Michigan, neither of whom rank among the top 13 schools in the BCS.
• PACIFIC 12: Oregon, the conference’s best team and until Saturday the No. 2 team in the BCS, may not even play for the Pac-12 title now. The Ducks lost to Stanford at home, and now need a win over Oregon State and a Stanford loss to UCLA to get into the game. The Bruins locked up the South Division with last week’s win over USC. But they’re far out of BCS title contention (17th).
• SEC: Conference teams have won six straight BCS championships and, as much as it pains the rest of the populace, there is a chance the SEC will make it seven. If Georgia beats Georgia Tech Saturday and Alabama beats Auburn, the Bulldogs and Crimson Tide will meet next week for not only the SEC championship but a pass into BCS game. Upsets by Tech and/or Auburn would change the scenario. But as of now, the SEC has by far the best conference title game and with the most on the line nationally.
So what else is new?

Best way to see the difference with the SEC and everyone else, is go to eBay and look for each conference’s championship game tickets. NOT EVEN CLOSE!

SEC fans make me laugh- they are so oblivious to facts. Not to mention- what kind of retard cheers for other teams in the conference? I would want all of my opponents to lose games.

Pretty shortsighted on your part. If all your opponents lose, then you have the nation’s weakest SOS–and no respect at all. A real fan should want all his team’s opponents to win–except when his team plays them. That’s how you build your ranking and earn national respect.

ARdawg, “Football is an investment at most universities and has become an an arms race.”
100% agree. The arms race analogy is perfect. I will have to find the 60 minutes show online. The only part I don’t understand is the “holding your nose” comment. I am proud of my program. Of course, I wish we won more games. But I proudly promote my school.
On a side note, Richt is the example of integrity in running a program. And yes, that hurt to admit that…

To the SEC and UGA haters – jealousy, pure jealousy. If your conference and/or school(s) have ANYTHING to brag about, try talking about that instead of constantly trying to put down our conference and school – your envy comes shining through every one of your blogs. SEC domination is killing you and the fact UGA is in the running for the BCS title this year has sent you over the edge!!!

Congrats, GTBuzz85, you may be the first GT fan I’ve seen on AJC blogs acknowledge Richt’s integrity. What most don’t understand is that while Richt’s philosophy in handling disciplinarian issues may be subject to debate, his intentions are honorable and heart felt. There is something to be said for Christians that actually walk the walk and Richt routinely demonstrates it.

Why don’t you share with the bloggers how your overinflated team has fared against the SEC in football over the years? If not the SEC, then how have your group of blowhards performed against FSU of the football-weak ACC? You’re 0-3, Mr. CrapforBrains.
If not football, why not share with the bloggers how your overrated Buckeyes fared against FSU in baseball the last time they played (2009)? Didn’t think you’d want to remember that one, sleazebag, so I’ll post it for you. You LOST 37-6! That’s right, 37-6 to FSU–in baseball, mind you.
So shut your yap, dimbulb, and instead of taking shots at the SEC, let’s hear how your slimeball cheaters stack up. Yeah, you oughta be ashamed.

What is the deal with this Buckeye character? Who stays on a sports blog all day to spar with dawg and SEC fans over college football? What a waste of time. Everyone knows that the SEC is the best conference because Jeff said so. I read Buckeye’s comment about being in the 1% category. I was thinking more like one of the 47% that Romney was talking about based on the amount of time he has to blog about nothing.

GTBob, what are you talking about with respect to the SEC’s non-conference scheduling? Besides in-state rivalry games, who in the ACC played a tough non-conference opponent this year? Let’s look at Florida State’s non-conference schedule: Murray State; Savannah State; South Florida.

You might be a realist, but you’re not posting reality here. FSU plays in the weak ACC, but have you forgotten that the Noles are going for 3 in a row over OOC fla Saturday? And Savannah State was a late replacement for WVA, which broke its contract with FSU during the spring.
Make your case, but don’t poison it with omissions and distortions.

Let the superleagues begin! The ACC is doomed unless Swofford pulls one out of his corn chute. I would imagine the Big Ten is talking to Syracuse right now. F$U and Clemson are just waiting for the chance to head for the SEC or Big 12. Miami is dumpster fire, so the only real strong football school left would be Va Tech. Nobody will bid for the TV rights for a few schools in three states with no real big markets. It’ll become a weak version of this years Big 12, and eventually the SEC, Big Ten, and Big 12 will grab the survivors to become the superleagues, along with the Pac-12, who will grab the biggest markets of the MWC to fill out their league.

GTBuzz85,
You are the self righteous hypocrite that came on here spouting off about “integrity” while casting stones at the SEC. This from a fan who’s team had to vacate the lone ACC crown in who knows how long because they refused to follow the instructions of the NCAA. Isn’t Tech currently on probation? Aren’t they backing into the ACCCG because 2 other ACC schools are in hot water with the NCAA for cheating to create a competitive advantage in recruting and keeping unqualified student-athletes eligible? Go spill your BS on some ACC, self-righteous blog. No one is buying that crap here.

But I don’t think F$U wants to stay in a weak football conference that can’t pull in the money like a retooled Big 12 will, and basketball just isn’t that important in Tallahassee.
Not likely, but if the SEC calls first, they are gone before Slive can say hello.

Jeff Schultz, kowtowing to their the home team why shouldn’t we root for them states the obvious : “relatively crummy season.” Then, offers up that Georgie tek 6-5 will be 6-6 after Saturday at our House, which is actually quicker to get to than Georgie tek. Georgie tek is our home team here in Hotlanta ? Excuse me, but Georgie tek is on NCAA PROBATION in FOOTBALL themselves, back-to-back REPEAT OFFENDERS of the MAJOR INFRACTIONS DATABASE.
Georgie tek has not only lost 10 of 11 games vs Mark Richt but has lost 10 in a row to FSU teams who put up at least a 10-Win season that year, too.
# 36 national university and # 38 in wins starting 1957, Georgie tek also has not won a Major Bowl Game starting 1957 either.
A 2 Touchdown DOG, Georgie tek LOST to 5-6 Virginia Tech, LOST to 6-5 Miami of Florida going on NCAA PROBATION like Georgie tek is on this day, November 20, 2012, LOST to 6-5 BYU who is great because Notre Dame beat them 17-14 but Georgie tek LOST to BYU 17-41 here in Atlanta, got blown-out by Clempsum Farmers who have not beat a single team ranked in any top 25 poll all season long and who finish their season with that distinction even without my hero Marcus Lattimore, and LOST to Middle Tennessee college, who the week after they too beat Georgie tek, LOST themselves to Louisiana Monroe.
# 115 Passing Offense, I am told on these blogs, their Quarterback ? Vad Lee is a great passer with his 20 completions the entire stinking miserable season for Georgie tek for a grand total of 3 TD Passes.
# 61 Total Defense
# 76 Scoring Defense
Fish-fry Paul Johnson smash the faces of UGA fans giving you a hard time, fired his Defensive Coordinator as a scapegoat, yet what we really have is :
6-5 Georgie tek loses 50-9 to UGA Saturday at our house
6-6 Georgie tek then loses to 10-2 Florida State
6-7 Georgie tek then plays in a bowl game before Christmas to end the season
6-8. “Relatively Crummy Season?”

Who is the best team in the ACC ? Trick question. They’re ain’t 1. Florida State’s only win over any team ranked in any poll is over Clempsum Farmers, when Clempsum hasn’t beat any team themselves who is any top 25 poll, either. And, Georgie tek plays them, after you beat FSU. Then, Georgie tek has LOST 7 bowl games in a row and faces off in some meaningless bowl game even before Christmas to end 6-8. How’s Jeff Driskel ?

Ohio State has NEVER beat an SEC team in a bowl game.
Ohio State has ALREADY LOST to The SEC in 2012, losing to 6-6 unranked Florida Gators.
11 times Ohio State has played The SEC in bowl games. 11 times. Ohio State has 0 wins over The SEC in bowl games, all-time, ever.
It is just as well that Ohio State is not playing in a bowl game because with 5 of the top 10 teams in the BCS Poll, in the Coaches’ Poll, in the Harris Poll, Ohio State would most definitely being playing an SEC team 2012 in their bowl game, again. And, LOSE again.
Ohio State plays a Michigan team who has beat no one. This ends Ohio State’s season and takes them out of their misery having to face-off and LOSE yet again in a bowl game vs The SEC.
Wisconsin the other Big 10 Conference CHUMPionship Opponent, like Clempsum Farmers, have not beat a single team in any top 25 poll, either.
Illinois is 2-9.
Penn State, also on NCAA PROBATION in FOOTBALL 2012 like Georgie tek, like Miami of Florida, like North Carolina on NCAA PROBATION in FOOTBALL 2012, like Ohio State on NCAA PROBATION in FOOTBALL – all for CHEATING to gain a competitive advantage for 2012, and Penn State ? Who has Penn State beat in any top 25 poll ? No one.
Purdue is 5-6.
Indiana is 4-7.
Nebraska QUIT the Big XII to join the Big 10, neither of whom can count. That’s the BCS top-ranked Big 10 team at # 14.
Michigan State, sparty, is 5-6.
UAB is 3-8.
California is 3-9.
UCF just lost to Tulsa last week and has beat no team in any top 25 poll.
And, Miami of Ohio is 4-7.
For this Ohio State is supposed to be a ranked team 2012 ?
Who the hell did Ohio State beat ? Good thing that PRETENDER did not get to play The SEC in bowl game again, to lose again, as they ALWAYS DO to The SEC in bowl games.
While the rest of the college football world has all these big games ahead, we’re supposed to rank the Ohio State CHEATERS in the polls for what is summarized of their year 2012 in this post ?

South Carolina, without my hero Marcus Lattimore, is a 4-point dog on the road where they’ve lost both of their games this season, against hapless Clempsum Farmers who have not beat a single team all 2012 season long against any team in any top 25 poll, even. The betting trend on this game 4 days before the 7pm kick-off is 74 percent on South Carolina. Bank on it.
Florida on the road where they lost their only game all season long (some road game at the stadium where they play the Gator Bowl every year since 1946), was a TD dog and now down to 6-point dog to FSU who represents the all-cupcake-conference, including themselves. Jeff Driskel is obviously supposed to play which explains the line changing and coming down. FSU has beat no team who made any top 25 poll all season long, except for Clempsum Farmers who have beat no team making any top 25 poll either. Florida has already beat # 7 LSU, # 9 Texas A and M and # 12 South Carolina, by direct comparison with lowly Florida State. Obviously, the stinking All Cupcake Conference cannot even come up with their teams for their bowl games’ commitments. That’s how bad the ACC is, which is obvious from the ACC’s teams and who’ve they’ve beat in the top 25 of any poll today. None of them have beat anyone in any poll all season long, bar none. That’s a sucker bet to think Florida State even wins this game, let alone covers the line. FSU fans are starved and believe the hype that Las Vegas set them at – 6 tonight. That is because Las Vegas knows that will get the maximum number of suckers at FSU to crawl out of the woodwork that they will beat the # 4 team in the nation. Uh huh. Yeah, right. A 3-2 advantage over FSU through the years, FSU has LOST every game to Florida in years in which they put-up at least 9 wins – since the very day Mark Richt LEFT Florida State. It ain’t changing this season, either. Florida is going to end the season a lot better than 9-Win Season. Florida looks to go 12-1 on the season, and clearly ends up at least # 3 in the final polls, which will be all that is published for 2012, as it should be. Florida stands a great chance of ending the season higher ranked than the only team to beat them; and, has an outside chance to play either Georgia again or Alabama in the BCS National Championship Game, if Notre Dame loses on the road to 4-loss now, unranked in any poll, Southern California. If Notre Dame loses, Florida absolutely will play for the BCS NC Title Game against the Winner of The SEC Championship Game. I don’t think Southern California or any of the PAC-12 are any good whatsoever; but, I know that # 4 Florida, # 3 UGA, and # 2 Alabama are all 3 waiting in the wings salivating at playing Notre Dame without an Aaron Murray to beat them, especially with a Todd Gurley, an Alec Ogletree and a Jarvis Jones. Notre Dame is in so over their heads as they always are bowl games. Notre Dame has not won a National Championship since 1988. They have a special bye in the BCS Rankings, and thus refused to JOIN THE ACC in FOOTBALL. They want to keep ALL THEIR REVENUE while they call their team a Team of Destiny 2012 for beating a 4-6 Pitt team in triple overtime. The ACC is going to have their annual ACC CHUMPionship Game again 2012 going into the game with ALL THE PARTICIPANTS THERETO, having just LOST to The SEC before said ACC CHUMPionship Game. But, at least FSU beat Notre Dame in the bowl game last season to give Notre Dame a LOSING BOWL RECORD.
Oregon at Oregon State, who cares ?
Mizzou 5-6 as I guaranteed before the season started at Texas A and M who is a 22-point pick.
Okie State at Choklahoma who has beat no one, who cares ?
Stanford at UCLA ? Who cares ?
Rutgers at 4-6 Pittsburgh ? Who cares ?
Wisconsin at Penn State, whoever loses has 5-Loss before their mutual annual bowl losses in the Big 10 ? Who cares ?
Georgie tek at Georgia 12pm. 13-point spread and still 83 percent of the betting is on UGA. Duh. They should have made it 41-point spread since it will be 50-9. Maybe someone would bet on Georgie tek soon to be 6-8 for the season after they lose their 8th bowl game in a row, after they lose in the ACC Championship Game since they have NEVER WON the ACC Championship Game, and after they lose to Mark Richt to be 1-11 against our coach. Did I mention the # 36 national university is # 38 in won/lost starting 1957, has won no Major Bowl Game starting 1957 and is on NCAA Probation back-to-back in FOOTBALL 2012, again ? I forget.
Michigan at Ohio State ? Might as well watch Akron Zits at Toledo.
