LIVE: Falcons hope to avoid hangover from Saints loss

Hello. Sorry, but I’m a little rushed today. I just posted a new column on Dawgmania in the BCS, following losses by Kansas State and Oregon late Saturday night. Now it’s time to switch gears to the pro team.
The Falcons play host to Arizona today. This is kind of a big game. I know that sounds strange for an 8-1 team with a three-game lead in the NFC South, but consider the circumstances.
They are coming of their first loss of the season, an emotional defeat to rival New Orleans (31-27), a game in which they felt they should have won (largely because of six red zone possessions that resulted in only three touchdowns). A loss to Arizona wouldn’t devastate the team but it has the potential to make things uncomfortable in the NFC South, with three straight divisional games to follow (at Tampa; home against New Orleans; at Carolina).
The questions about the Falcons now are the same questions we knew before the season: Is their running game and their run defense good enough to compete for a title? The run defense played better in the second half at New Orleans after a miserable first half, but the absence of linebacker Sean Weatherspoon (who will be out again today) continues to hurt the front seven.
The principles of the team’s short-yardage running game have taken a lot of heat, from the offensive line to Michael Turner. It will be interesting to see how effectively Atlanta can run against Arizona because the Cardinals are physical up front.
That said, this is a game the Falcons should win. They can score (NFL’s No. 6 team in offense, No. 8 in points) and Arizona can’t (No. 31 in offense and No. 31 in points). At least, that has been the case up until now.
One key injury note: wide receiver Julio Jones (right ankle) is playing today.

Turner needs to be cut NOW. If the Falcons can’t find somebody else who can do the job then hey, they’re no worse off than they are now, right? If your run game is near the bottom of the league it should be a hint that there’s something wrong with your featured running back, and recently Michael Turner is doing “good” just to get back to the line of scrimmage. If the Falcons insist on keeping him and trying to make it work out they will pay dearly; there’s no getting around it.

Well, the one good thing that’ll come out of this game (which is quickly looking more and more like a Falcons crash n’ burn-style loss) is that heads will assuredly roll. Edwards was gone this past week; you can bet he’s only the beginning after the debacle we’re witnessing now. If Mike Smith and co. don’t get the ship righted ASAP, this “special” season is going down the crapper. And it’s abundantly clear that big changes are needed at multiple positions on the field right now (RB, offensive line, and defensive pass rush most notably).

No offense, but I don’t think anyone is bailing; it’s simply that we’re seeing all-too-familiar ground covered here and one game means a heck of a lot in an NFL season; in the playoffs it’s win or go home. So yeah, given what we’re seeing I’d say fans have a right to be voicing concerns.

Arizona beat New England and San Fran earlier this year. Green Bay is losing to Detroit at the half. Houston is struggling with Jacksonville (!!!!) today, and Dallas and Philly (the Dream Team) are basically out of the playoffs already. Every team has professional players that are the best in the world at what they do. It’s difficult to win in this league. Either support your team and quit with all the negativity or quit watching. For you to come on this blog every week and bemoan that play of the team you supposedly “root” for shows just how stupid you are. Actually, the Cardinals defense is not playing way above themselves. They are the 9th ranked defense in the league and the 5th ranked scoring defense, right above Atlanta at 6th. The Cardinal offense, on the other hand, is running the ball much better than they typically do as they are ranked 31st.
Atlanta is struggling on offense, but that has a lot to do with the offensive line struggling with a really good front seven on the Cardinals. Ask the Patriots and 49ers about that.

1) Still can’t beat rival/nemesis

Yes, I do bring that to the table, as I have been a fan of the team all of my life. I have endured a lot as a fan, which makes me appreciate just how good we have been over the past 5 years as an organization. I choose to look at the positives (unlike the last pass that Ryan just threw), and know I don’t want to go back to how bad we were in the 80’s and 90’s (98 being the exception, of course). I have witnessed this team go through all of the gimmicks (Glanville, Jones, Vick) and come up with nothing. Now, they have a competent ownership, front office, and coaching staff, as well as a qb who has gotten better every year in the league. The present and the future look bright.

First, I didn’t call anyone a troll. Second, everyone is entitled to say whatever the heck they want to about the Falcons and their “poor” play today or any other time, for that matter. My only point was that they are calling the Falcons losers without taking into account that the other teams in the league also have professional players that line up and want to beat the crap out of them as well. I understand the negative comments, I just don’t get the vitriol that they are spoken with. My point was that if it’s that bad and makes you so mad, quit watching and rooting for the team that continues to let you down and do something else with your life. The OL is going to ruin us in the playoffs. Whichever team we play in the first round will boot us out of the playoffs in the first round once again. Ryan can’t complete passes running for his life. The NFL has ruined the ability of rookies such as our two draft picks from this year to make an impact in positions that require a lot of reps and training with their stupid limit on number of practices. Regardless, we need to work Holmes into one of the Tackle spots because neither of our starting tackles is even average.

No the Falcons aren’t as good as we thought, but they aren’t as bad as they played today either. They will win at least four of the next six and likely get homefield for the playoffs. However, they have to find a way to run the football.

Give Arizona some credit. The reason they started 4-0 was because of their defense. They had a bye week and their defense is good. The Falcons O-line finally got it together enough for that last TD drive. When you’re playing Harry Douglas along with a back up they can double Roddy White. That made it a lot tougher on Ryan but he got the job done when he needed to. This is a different offense with Julio Jones in there so we need to get him healthy. with spoon coming back the defense is going to get even better.

I remember watching Meldrick Taylor beat Julio C Chavez for 12 or 15 rounds . . . . .then with one good flurry . . .Taylor down with about 5 seconds left in the fight – Ref called TKO. This sort of reminded me of that fight.

I’m also sure the Falcons will try not to replicate their Offensive Performance today – specifically Ryan with the Ints. Thankfully he did have two really nice drives that mattered immensely . . ..the pre halftime FG drive . . . those 3 points were big. And the last TD drive where the O was clicking.

Ugliest game I ever saw – and I watched the UGA–Scar game. The commentators said it was the first time since 1967 when a team (with Bart Starr) won with 5 INTs and no passing TDs. Thank God the D bailed us out and thank God Arizona has no offense except Larry Fitzgerald.

Positive signs from today:
1. Defense really stepped up and shut down the Arizona offense (a few gashing runs, notwithstanding).
2. the resilience of this team to continue to compete and pull off wins says a lot about their mental toughness. That will come in hand in the playoffs
3. Rogers is slowly being entrusted to run the ball more, as he is much more effective than Turner.
4. Result of # 3, Turner started running with much more decisiveness and actually flashed the skills that made him one of the top rb’s in the league a few years ago.
5. Matt Ryan, though he made several bad plays throughout the game, still is clutch when he needs to be, at the end of the first half and the end of the game. The dude has no conscience when the game is on the line and needs to run the 2-minute offense. That will bode well in the playoffs.
Yes, it was an ugly win, but 5 picks is a fluke, especially for Ryan. However, we are 9-1 and if the team can figure out how to deal with their weaknesses (offensive line, rb, run defense), then we should be able to get home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Then, we will see what the team is really made of, in particular, Ryan.
