If Mark Richt and the Bulldogs win two more games they'll play for BCS title. (Brandt Sanderlin/AJC)
This is why we love sports. This is why it’s the greatest reality show we have going – unscripted and unexpected, with fluctuating emotions of fan bases from game to game.
Who foresees this? Who looks at a 0-2 Georgia team last season, with coach Mark Richt under assault by fans and media, with the program a non-factor in the SEC for more than two years, boat-raced in the conference by Alabama, Florida and LSU, and thinks: By the end of next season, those Bulldogs may have a chance to play for the BCS championship?
After some early hiccups in Athens Saturday, Georgia buried Georgia Southern 45-14. That’s one development that surprised nobody. What changed the landscape of college football’s national race is what occurred later that evening.
Kansas State, the BCS’s No. 1 team, got body-slammed 52-24 by Baylor (the same Baylor that was 1-5 in the Big 12 before kickoff). Oregon, the BCS’s No. 2 team, was upset at home by Stanford in overtime 17-14 (the same Oregon team whose point totals had ranged from 42 to 70 in its first 10 games).
These developments made happy people of everybody in the SEC office and a significant portion of the population in Georgia and Alabama. The losses by Kansas State and Oregon opened the door to the winner of the SEC championship game getting a pass into the BCS title game. When the new BCS rankings came out Sunday night, the top five teams were as expected: 1) Notre Dame; 2) Alabama; 3) Georgia; 4) Florida; 5) Oregon. Kansas State dropped all the way to sixth.
For the Bulldogs, it comes down to this: Win two games and they’re in. Yes, really.
Beat rival Georgia Tech at home next week (they will be favored) and Alabama in two weeks at the Georgia Dome (they will be underdogs) and the Dogs will play for their first BCS title.
Suddenly, residents of this state – at least those not associated with the teams on North Ave. – bark in unison.
Richt will have a difficult job trying to keep his players focused on a football game this week. That’s not the norm. Getting players to think about a game against their state rival shouldn’t be a chore. But the circumstances are extraordinary. Georgia’s last national championship came in 1980, and even if the Dogs need three more victories to win another one, nobody imagined they would get this close – not this year.
Just consider the reaction by some Georgia players on Twitter immediately following Oregon’s loss to Stanford:
• Quarterback Aaron Murray (@aaronmurray11): “Yesssssssssssss!!!!!! The Murray household just went crazyyyyy!!!!!!”
• Running back Keith Marshall (@truthh4): “Can’t lie. I’m excited right now.” But he followed that with: “Gotta focus on GT first.”
• Wide receiver Tavarres King (@TKUnoDos): “ALL SMILES!!!!!!!!”
• Cornerback Sanders Commings: “Thank you Baylor, thank you Stanford.” And Sunday morning: “And I wake up pinching myself. Yea it’s real. We control our own destiny.”
• Safety Marc Deas (@DatBoiDeas): “Show me the BCS!!!!”
Richt will try to ground them all this week. But one thing Georgia has done well is respond to adversity, whether it’s a loss (like getting pounded by South Carolina) or struggling early in against an inferior opponent (like Saturday against Georgia Southern). Maybe that grounding effect can work in high times, too.
“The one thing that’s different about this team is our composure,” wide receiver Chris Conley said following Saturday’s win. “We haven’t had guys freaking out on the sideline when something’s not going right.”
It follows that now they can’t freak out when everything is going right.

if GA is number 3, then the Falcons will win the superbowl. both teams highly overrated but steady to date. theydo have not top tier talent, notch or two below. if uga wins bowl game this year then a good to very good season (assuming no blowout in sec champ). ryan has shown just how far he is from top tier, but has 3 very good receivers when healthy. prediction alabama 31, uga 7.

For potential pandemonium, try this zany scenario:
– USC beats Notre Dame.

– Florida State beats Florida.
– Oregon State beats Oregon.
Who goes to Miami then?
And to complete the fun, Ohio State — remember the unbeaten Buckeyes? — beats Michigan.

This is exactly why the BCS blows. Georgia is 1-1 against decent teams this year. I’m not picking on Georgia because you could say that about any of the top teams. Until all teams quit playing these cupcakes, there is never gonna be true National Champion.

The so-called NC GAME has pretty much, always been a debate in November. Why should this year be any different. You can’t hang your hat on a program for having won it any more than you can dispose of a program for not winning it. It’s not necessarily something in a coach’s control.
That being said. I found it interesting that this is only the 20th “10 WIN” season in UGA’s history and CMR has 8 of them. And this is the coach you want to fire????
Bobo’s offense has broken a touchdown/season mark. And you want to fire him?????
Either, the poster’s calling for these guys heads over the last couple of years don’t know a thing about football or they are not DAWG fans and are just trying to stir the pot.
I told all of you a couple of years ago that UGA hasn’t had a team this complete since the late ’70’s-early ’80’s and to just be patient and let Richt do his thing. We are about to witness a special time in UGA history. They may or may not win the NC. It is far more important to win the SEC TITLE. Go DAWGS!!!!!!!

UGA beats Georgie tek 50-9
UGA beats Alabama about 27-24.
What if Notre Dame gets beat by 4-Loss unranked any poll, Southern California ?
That is all it takes.
UGA then gets re-match UGA vs Florida, this time not at the stadium where the Gator Bowl is played every year, but at the Georgia Dome where at least half the games should be played anyway.
# 4 Florida would move up to # 2
# 3 UGA would move up to # 1
UGA would win the re-match since we have BOTH an OFFENSE and a Defense.
Neither Notre Dame, nor Alabama, nor Florida have anything close to an Aaron Murray.
Neither Notre Dame, nor Alabama, nor Florida have anything close to a Jarvis Jones.
Neither Notre Dame, nor Alabama, nor Florida have anything close to an Alec Ogletree.
Neither Notre Dame, nor Alabama, nor Florida have anything close to a Todd Gurley.
Our talent is NOT inferior; it is CLEARLY succinctly, better.
These are the ONLY 4 teams involved.
Notre Dame
Alabama
Florida
Georgia
Well, Southern California unranked with 4-Losses, could beat Notre Dame; but, if they don’t
# 4 Florida
# 3 UGA
# 2 Alabama
Are ALL licking our chops to have the chance to play them.
If Notre Dame LOSES to lowly unranked previously # 1 Southern California with 4-Losses already, then the winner of The SEC Championship Game gets 1-slot and Florida at # 4 would move up past the loser of The SEC Championship Game and above then a 1-loss Notre Dame who has beat no team in the top 10 with their 3 great wins this season over # 7 LSU # 8 Texas A and M and # 12 today South Carolina who will BEAT Clempsum Farmers who have beat no one in any top 25 poll all season long.

“What lost the game?????
Inexperienced and underdeveloped youth in the offensive line. Can’t run or pass without it. Period. They were playing against the best defensive front in the country and it showed.
Defense had a piss poor game plan. Nobody had containment and Jarvis Jones was taking shallow angles toward the running back while no one accounted for QB. Defensive line played well. Not much yardage given up in the power running game and fair penetration throughout the night, which forced shaw out of the pocket and eventually down the field cause nobody was accounting for him on the edges.
Why didn’t the coaching staff see this coming and plan for it? Why run #3 and #4 up the middle with 6 of the best D-LINE in the country waiting for him and no push at all from the O-LINE.
I defended CMR and Staff for years for a very good reason, but what happened tonite is inexcusable. The coaching staff was caught with their pants down. As far as I’m concerned, if CMR and company don’t win the SEC this year or at least look competitive in the game…then it’s time to clean house. They’ve got NFL grade talent on both sides of the ball. Other teams win with a lesser O-LINE than UGA has by gameplanning and not relying heavily on the line (i.e., quick release passes, sprint outs, QB running plays, sweeps, etc.). I saw very little of that tonite. When we did see it, it was relatively successful.
NO GAME PLAN!!!!!!!!!!”

It certainly sounds to me like you are writing a post to yourself, aren’t you BIG MIKE, sir ? I happen to believe that you were correct in trying to motivate our team like we did against Florida to start this great run 2012 for Mark Richt’s great recruits remaining, all 64 scholarship recruits plus 1 transfer-in. Were you WRONG last month BIG MIKE and Shawn Williams, wrong too ? Or, are you right this month that how many TD in a 14-game season or how many wins in a 14-game season should be compared with 11-game seasons ending in 1979, and 12-game seasons which ran from 1980 through 2001 for us, or even go all the way back to 1942 and try to compare that one 12-game season 1942 with 2012 ?
It’s a little confusing comparing 14-game seasons with 11-game or 12-game seasons, especially with bowl records removed from those old records as well; but yes Mark Richt whom you called for being fired just last month, has won 10-game seasons 8 times in 12-seasons to-date with more to come if he will stay here because of his great recruiting.
But, your post makes it sound like you are trying to say this morning that last month, you were wrong.
I think you were right last month. Or, was Shawn Williams wrong, too BIG MIKE ?

Thomas,
I have posted here before and my post is not a joke. I responded to YOUR previous post exactly the way you presented it. Now, you have to go back and talk about how many years in coaching…etc. Go back and read your own post…you said “Mark has sent more to the NFL than any coach”…again, I answered it the way YOU wrote it.
As far as picking on you, not even close, just some friendly sports banter showing how easy it is to present one side and make it sound sensational. Like this talking heads at ESPN, wasn’t it just last week how great KSU and Oregon was?
You said how Notre Dame hasn’t played anybody…okay, so Notre Dame beating a now 9-2 Stanford team that beat the Oregon Ducks on their home turf isn’t impressive…so how about beating Oklahoma on the road 30-13 isn’t impressive either? A place where Bob Stoops was 79-4? So what if the Irish don’t win 40-14 every time. A win is a win and they have held 5 of their 11 opponents without a touchdown. Impressive no matter who you play.
You keep suggesting Florida as Georgia’s huge win, but even they needed a blocked punt to beat Louisiana-Lafayette. Thats the beauty of college football…you never know and you won’t until you play the game.
Your posts are thought provoking, PLEASE, JUST BE FAIR…regardless how much you love your Dawgs. I never once said anything negative about the Dawgs and I did not say their defense was bad, as you suggest in your last post. They are actually playing great football right now and not a moment too soon as Alabama awaits.
I’m a fan of college football Thomas

ShadeTree, you can answer it how ever you prefer, but you’re left with comparing coaches 14 years long or 18 years longer in total than what Mark Richt has done while he’s been our coach, sir. During the time, Steve Spurrier, Mark Richt and Mack Brown have coached together, they have all consistently done WORSE than Mark Richt.
Haven’t they ?
You can be a fan of college football, and so can we all.
There is a team you root for, isn’t there ?

Take NASCAR last night for example ShadeTree ? There were 2 possible guys who could win the $5,662,800 for winning NASCAR Sprint Cup 2012. Do you watch NASCAR ? Did you root for Brad Keselowski or for Jimmy Johnson, who came in 3rd behind also Clint Bower ?
You’re purposely dodging the question, as you obscure the facts that what Mark Richt has done has not been matched by any other coach because the KIDS TODAY LOVE MARK RICHT and have all 12 years.
It is not a hyperpole to say that Mark Richt has recruited better and sent more to the NFL than anyone.
I like a good college football banter as well as anyone ShadeTree; only I do insist that those whom I carry on such banter on the Internet have posted before, answer direct questions, and address this point.
My posts are thought-provoking because I research what I post before I post. And, because I hit on the issue of the moment in my hobby, college football.

Yes, you’re right, of course : It’s no mystery; you prefer to hide whom it is you root for while you try to make it stick that I am biased in favor of UGA because I have seasons’ tickets, have been to 17 Florida Georgia games in JAX, go to the bowl games, go to every game at the Georgia Dome, and actually know what the hell I am talking about.
I am not biased, and you are. Only you steadfastly refuse to admit who you root for
for obvious reasons.
Your team does NOT have a coach whom the kids like more, and therefore your team you do root for has worse recruiting than Mark Richt and does not send as many in the NFL Draft as Mark Richt.
Just don’t be watching the NFL Draft after this 2012 season, because there will be NO COLLEGE in the world with more NFL Draft Selections since 2001 when he became our coach.
All your BS to the contrary unable to address except that I need to pull my head out of MY alma mater’s behind long enough to breathe when you are wholly unable to make your point that anyone has done better than Mark Richt in recruiting rankings or NFL Draft Picks except Southern Cal who has recruited higher ranked recruiting classes starting 2001 than he has, but will have NOT had more NFL draft picks AFTER the 2012 season’s players are drafted, unless Southern California can come up with 10 NFL Draft Selections from this year’s team.
And, YOU didn’t even point that out.
That, again, sir, was I.

The Tech fans (or whoever) on here proclaiming UGA has no chance against Bama – do any of you actually watch football or are you going purely on reputation?
Bama’s defense is well-coached and disciplined, but the talent is simply not there. They lost their best 5 players and they do not have real playmaking ability. On offense, The O-Line is great. No question. But they have not played a team with the kind of ability to get into the backfield of UGA. LSU took a huge step back on that front, and as good as TAM is, it is not comparable. McCarron is basically David Greene – he rarely makes mistakes, he is a capable, accurate passer with occassional flashes of brilliance, but the pure physical skills are not there.
Ed Lacy is a very good, very strong RB, but he is no Trent Richardson.
Will Bama be the favorite? Yes. Should they be? Yes. Are they an unstoppable force? Heck no.

Bama beat # 7 LSU
Dogs beat # 4 Florida
No one else in consideration has a win as good as either, already – other than Florida who has beat already # 7 LSU, # 8 Texas A and M and # 12 South Carolina.
Pitt is 4-6 and Notre Dame called itself a team of Destiny because it beat them in triple OT.
Georgia, Florida and Alabama are all 3 dominant teams, but only 1 has an Aaron Murray, a Jarvis Jones, a Todd Gurley and an Alec Ogletree. Alabama has all these freshmen at key positions 2012. Florida has they say Jeff Driskel for Florida State, but on his best day, he is no Aaron Murray, either.
4 teams in the discussion and no one has beat a better team than # 3 UGA beating # 4 Florida. # 2 Alabama beat # 7 LSU. # 1 Notre Dame beat # 8 Stanford but Stanford also lost to 4-Loss Washington or they would be 5-Loss Washington. Florida beat # 7 LSU too, and # 9 Texas A and M and # 12 South Carolina, but lost to # 3 Georgia.
I love The SEC; it’s always fun looking at the details of The SEC compared to podunk nothings of a football team every year running onto this blog and bragging how great their team is that year and how badly The SEC has done this year compared to their own pitiful records.

I normally root for Tech in this game but I am looking at the big picture and would like to see GA have a shot at the NC. With the game here in Atlanta, they will have a home field advantage and I think Alabama can be beat; the aura is gone after the TAMU loss.
Either team should be Notre Dame in a BCS championship, in fact I believe every team in the top ten can beat ND, they are shaky. However, they deserve to be number one because they are undefeated and beat the Stanford team that beat Oregon who I thought was the best team in the country. I knew Oregon was in trouble when they did not score in the 1st quarter, the players were already feeling nervous.

Georgia’s Opponents 2012, not including unknown bowl opponent. are 56-55 a winning record. This was achieved over this past weekend. Another even 10-2 bowl opponent, would move us to # 39 Official NCAA Strength of Schedule for 2012.
Most importantly about # 39 SoS is that we have ALREADY beat # 4 Florida.
Business at hand is beating 10-1 Alabama, not 6-5 Georgie tek fixing to end 6-8.
I certainly do hope that we’ve been concentrating our coaching staff on how to prepare us for winning our 3rd SEC Championship in 2012, a year that definitely is NOT a down year for The SEC with 3 teams of the top 4 vying for a spot in the BCS NC Title Game.
We don’t need to deflect the conversation from the important Alabama game. Yes, something comes with that. That, today, is a Notre Dame team without any Aaron Murray. Anyone who has watched Notre Dame, knows that they most certainly do NOT have an Aaron Murray.
BEAT BAMA. And, to those who not know, in 63 games, Alabama has only beat us 36 times – for the best record against Alabama of any of their opponents all-time. And, we have every opportunity having known all this since we beat # 4 Florida at the stadium where they play the Gator Bowl by converting on that 3rd Down to put away Florida, unlike 2002 when we went 0-11 on 3rd Downs against Florida and did NOT get to play in the BCS NC Title Game that year because of it. All we needed to win that day in 2002 vs Florida was 1 of 11 on 3rd Down Conversions on the last play of the game.
