If Mark Richt and the Bulldogs win two more games they'll play for BCS title. (Brandt Sanderlin/AJC)
This is why we love sports. This is why it’s the greatest reality show we have going – unscripted and unexpected, with fluctuating emotions of fan bases from game to game.
Who foresees this? Who looks at a 0-2 Georgia team last season, with coach Mark Richt under assault by fans and media, with the program a non-factor in the SEC for more than two years, boat-raced in the conference by Alabama, Florida and LSU, and thinks: By the end of next season, those Bulldogs may have a chance to play for the BCS championship?
After some early hiccups in Athens Saturday, Georgia buried Georgia Southern 45-14. That’s one development that surprised nobody. What changed the landscape of college football’s national race is what occurred later that evening.
Kansas State, the BCS’s No. 1 team, got body-slammed 52-24 by Baylor (the same Baylor that was 1-5 in the Big 12 before kickoff). Oregon, the BCS’s No. 2 team, was upset at home by Stanford in overtime 17-14 (the same Oregon team whose point totals had ranged from 42 to 70 in its first 10 games).
These developments made happy people of everybody in the SEC office and a significant portion of the population in Georgia and Alabama. The losses by Kansas State and Oregon opened the door to the winner of the SEC championship game getting a pass into the BCS title game. When the new BCS rankings came out Sunday night, the top five teams were as expected: 1) Notre Dame; 2) Alabama; 3) Georgia; 4) Florida; 5) Oregon. Kansas State dropped all the way to sixth.
For the Bulldogs, it comes down to this: Win two games and they’re in. Yes, really.
Beat rival Georgia Tech at home next week (they will be favored) and Alabama in two weeks at the Georgia Dome (they will be underdogs) and the Dogs will play for their first BCS title.
Suddenly, residents of this state – at least those not associated with the teams on North Ave. – bark in unison.
Richt will have a difficult job trying to keep his players focused on a football game this week. That’s not the norm. Getting players to think about a game against their state rival shouldn’t be a chore. But the circumstances are extraordinary. Georgia’s last national championship came in 1980, and even if the Dogs need three more victories to win another one, nobody imagined they would get this close – not this year.
Just consider the reaction by some Georgia players on Twitter immediately following Oregon’s loss to Stanford:
• Quarterback Aaron Murray (@aaronmurray11): “Yesssssssssssss!!!!!! The Murray household just went crazyyyyy!!!!!!”
• Running back Keith Marshall (@truthh4): “Can’t lie. I’m excited right now.” But he followed that with: “Gotta focus on GT first.”
• Wide receiver Tavarres King (@TKUnoDos): “ALL SMILES!!!!!!!!”
• Cornerback Sanders Commings: “Thank you Baylor, thank you Stanford.” And Sunday morning: “And I wake up pinching myself. Yea it’s real. We control our own destiny.”
• Safety Marc Deas (@DatBoiDeas): “Show me the BCS!!!!”
Richt will try to ground them all this week. But one thing Georgia has done well is respond to adversity, whether it’s a loss (like getting pounded by South Carolina) or struggling early in against an inferior opponent (like Saturday against Georgia Southern). Maybe that grounding effect can work in high times, too.
“The one thing that’s different about this team is our composure,” wide receiver Chris Conley said following Saturday’s win. “We haven’t had guys freaking out on the sideline when something’s not going right.”
It follows that now they can’t freak out when everything is going right.

Georgia has won 2 AP NC’s. 1942 and 1980. The NC’s handed out by the Hooterville Daily Bee or the Athens Morning Woodpecker and Review don’t count. And really, wartime titles shouldn’t count at all.

If UGA wins the nat champ this year, coaches all over the nation will start changing their scheduling schemes. No one has ever won a nat champ with such a pansy schedule. Lesson: Schedule pansies and win the nat champ. Easy.

it is a weak schedule. may not be their fault that a lot of SEC schools are bad this year, but the out of conference is a joke.

UGA 1 win over a top 10 team this year … UF
UF 2 wins over top 10 teams this year and a win over a top 15 team (USCe).

For everybody who thought that the Dawgs had NO chance to get to the BCS after Bama lost… where did your pessimism get you? For all of your negativity what did it gain you? Nothing.
What are you going to say when UGA beats Bama in the SEC championship game? There is still a possibility that Notre Dame could lose. That would make the SEC championship game between #1 and #2… winner take all. And if the Dawgs win then they richly deserve a shot at the BCS championship. You take your weak schedule whining and shove it at that point. If things remain as they are then the Dawgs will again be playing a #2 team. If they win they will have beaten the # 2 team twice in less than half a season. That is earning it folks. Forget South Carolina… the team that lost that game is dead and gone.
The Dawgs an offense that CAN beat Bama. They have trouble getting to the passer and their secondary is suspect. Our WR’s are better than LSU’s and our running game is stronger than A&M’s. Our defense is as good as LSU’s and better than A&M’s. When all is said and done that game will be about intensity. If the Dawgs show up with UF level intensity… Bama is sunk. When they play with that level of intensity no one can beat them.
I want to play Notre Dame for the national championship again. It turned out pretty good last time. Notre Dame shouldn’t be undefeated anyway. Stanford got screwed on a horrible call in their game. Stanford is the ONLY good team Notre Dame has played. Unfortunately, I am pretty sure USC will expose Notre Dame next week. We will see.

Same record Turtle90… Florida had the opportunity to control their own destiny and blew it. They got WHIPPED… beaten at their own game. The Dawgs deserve to be ranked above them. So what if we lost one game to a ranked opponent… so did UF. If the Dawgs beat Bama that will make 2 #2 teams they will have beaten. That is called EARNING the right to be in the BCS championship game. If they win that game… assuming that ND remains unbeaten… they will have beaten the #1 team and the #2 team 2X… 3-1 against ranked opponents. No one else can come close to that resume. DUH!

The following is the most intelligent post ESPN’s Heather Dinich has ever posted:
Who programmed “overrated” into the computers this year? There’s no way Georgia and Florida are THAT much better than the ACC’s top two teams — if they even are better at all. Florida State has a chance to prove that this weekend, when the Noles host the rival Gators in the final game of the regular season. On second thought, Florida’s unwarranted ascension in the BCS standings might be the best thing to happen to FSU because if they win on Saturday, it will carry even more significance.
A shakeup in the standings was expected this weekend after Oregon and Kansas State both lost, but the rapid promotion of the SEC East comes as a surprise while the ACC maintained its status quo. Florida beat Jacksonville State. FSU won on the road to clinch the ACC’s Atlantic Division. Georgia overcame a slow start to beat Georgia Southern, not to be confused with Georgia Tech.
The SEC is rewarded for beating up on the little guys while the ACC is penalized for it.

Thomas Brown and his Stats:
It’s easy to have an argument when you only tell one side of the story.
Yes, Georgia gave up ZERO Touchdowns to Florida this year, but you don’t mention they gave up 44 to Tennessee and 24 to Kentucky, ranked #115th in total offense and #116th in scoring offense.
Yes, the beat Tech in 2009, but you don’t mention they lost to Tennessee, who finished 7-5 and Kentucky, AT HOME, who also finished 7-5.
Yes, the beat the Vols in 2001, but you don’t mention they lost to Auburn AT HOME, who finished 7-4.
Yes, they beat Auburn in 2006, but you don’t mention they lost to Vanderbilt AT HOME, who finished 4-8.
Also…Mark Richt sent more players to NFL than “any other coach in America”? Wrong again…try Steve Spurrier at 85 an Mack Brown’s 96 to Mark Richt’s 57. I attached the link for you so you can see the others can look stuff up too

Who foreseen it?!! I forseen it and was saying this BEFORE the 2011 season began…..The Dawg has turned. I told you young ignorant fans this JANUARY 2011 AFTER the bowl loss and the 6-7 season. I told you all that you were missing the big picture and that all was well and the prior 2 seasons understandable. EASILY understandable. A little worse than expected by a game or 2 but still not unexpected. BUT you were all spoiled by al the winning and the almost winning it all you couldnt take the EXPECTED down years…..I told you IMMEDIATLEY AFTER THE 2010 SEASON WHEN YOU WERE ALL, INCLUDING SCHULTZ AND BRADLEY, CALLING FOR RICHTS HEAD AND I HAVE SUPPORTED HIM SINCE THEN BECAUSE I HAVE SEEN THIS PROGRAM FOR 33 YEARS. I HAVE SEEN UPS AND DOWNS AND I KNOW WHAT WE GOT IN COACH MARK RICHT. WE HAVE A FOUNDATION AND STABILITY AND A TRADITION OF CONSISTENT WINNING HAS BEEN BUILT. HE WEATHERED THE STORM AS I STATED HE WOULD AND UGA IS IN A BETTER PLACE FOR IT. THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING. UGA IS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE FROM EVEN MY WISE PREDICTIONS. THEY WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE IN THE SEC CHAMP UNTIL THIS YEAR, NOT LAST YEAR. BUT THAT WILL GET THEM THE W OVER BAMA THIS YEAR AND INTO THE NC. AND WHEN UGA BRINGS THE TROPHY HOME….PLEASE ALL YOU RICHT HATERS, DO NOT CELEBRATE ONE TIME. NOT ONE TIME. UNTIL YOU COME ON HERE AND PUBLICLY ADMIT HOW WRONG YOU WERE.
THE NEXT 10 YEARS ARE GOING TO BE THE BEST IN UGA HISTORY. EVEN IF WE HAVE A COUPLE DOWN ONES. AND WHEN WE DO I HOPE YOU MATURED DURING THIS PROCESS AND WILL NOT FREAK OUT WHEN IT HAPPENS AGAIN…BEAR BRYANT HAD MANY MORE LOSING SEASONS THAN MARK RICHT…..INCLUDING IMMEDIATELY BEFORE WINNING BACK-TO-BACK NC’S. INCLUDING DOOLEY THE YEAR BEFORE HE WON IT. WELL HERSCHEL WON IT. UGA MIGHT NOT WIN IT THIS YEAR AND NEITHER WERE THEY “EXPECTED” TO. NOR WERE THEY EXPECTED WO WIN THE SEC EVEN. SO IF IT DONT HAPPEN, DONT FREAK OUT. BE HAPPY YOU HAVE A GREAT COACH WHO HAS BUILT A GREAT PROGRAM WITH A FOUNDATION. UNLIKE AT AUBURN, TENN, FLA, ARK, MISS, MISS ST, VANDY, KENT, GT, ETC. ONLY A SELECT FEW ARE CONSISTENTLY IN THE TOP 10 IN THIS NATION AND UGA IS IN THE SEC….THE BEST IS YET TO COME. AND YOU WANTED THE PERSON RESPONSIBLE OF THIS JOURNEY FIRED. AND YOU AND CERTAIN MEMBERS OF THE AJC WERE…..WRONG. DONT MATTER IF UGA WINS OR LOSES ITS LAST 2 GAMES OR NOT. WE WERENT SUPPOSED TO WIN IT ALLTHIS YEAR ANYWAY. ON THE FLIPSIDE, WE WERE SUPPOSED TO LOSE IN 2009 AND 2010. I LOBBIED AND TRIED TO TALK SENSE INTO THE IGNORANTS. THEY THINK THEY ARE WISE AND KNOW SO MUCH BUT THEY ARE JUST YOUNG, EMOTIONAL AND DUMB. LISTEN TO YOUR ELDERS AND KEEP YOUR TRAP SHUT. YOU WONT HAVE TO SWALLOW SO MUCH CROW AND CAN ACTUALLY ENJOY WHEN THE DAGS WIN BIG WITH RICHT. YOU MIGHT AS WELL SUPPORT HIM AS COACH HARDHEADS….HES NOT GOING ANYWHERE UNTIL HE WANTS TO GO. YOU BETTER START WORRYING ABOUT THAT. PLENTY OF SCHOOLS WOULD LOVE TO HAVE HIM.
ITS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE UGA HAS A SPECIAL TEAM AND WINS IT ALL. ONLY A MATTER OF TIME. THAT TIME COULD BE HERE SOONER THAN WE EXPECTED…IF I AM SAYING ITS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE,
ALL OF YOU RICHT HATERS YOU MUST BE IN SEVERE SHOCK!!! WHAT IGMOS. TOLD YOU THAT AFTER 2010 BOWL GAME… IT WAS ALL GOOD. THE DAWG HAD TURNED AFTER 2 EXPECTED DOWN YEARS…MAYBE YOU WILL LISTEN NOW…THE BEST IS YET TO COME

ShadeTree, why is that you’ve NEVER written 1 post ever here, and now pick on me that you’re some guru in college football talking about NFL Draft Picks by different coaches during the Mark Richt era because you reference that joke of a group of sorry writers, The Bleacher Report, with 2 guys who posted replies to every Bleacher Report ever, always talking with themselves ?
Excuse me the Bleacher Report you gave us the URL Link to doesn’t even have that. No replies from anyone in America to the story you reference. Strong blog there Bubba.
I hardly think that Mack Brown, coaching for 27 years has sent more players into the NFL that Mark Richt has in the Mark Richt era.
Steve Spurrier, coaching for 25 years, has been a college football head coach starting 1987.
Mack Brown has been a college football head coach starting 1983.
Mark Richt didn’t even graduate from college until 1982 and has been head coach since 2001, less than half the number of years of either. And, you run in here with a URL Link to a Bleacher Report when I have never read a Bleacher Report yet which has EVER been correct in their facts. Not ever. Not 1.
If you look at the NFL Drafts, not some Bleacher Report written by someone afraid to have his posts scrutinized and replied to, especially 1 no one replied to, you will find that indeed Mark Richt has done far better than Mack Brown and Steve Spurrier, head-to-head. That’s because he recruits better than they do. Steve Spurrier at South Carolina is # 12 in the BCS Poll today, and Mack Brown at Texas is # 16 in the BCS Poll today, while Mark Richt is # 3 in every poll today including most especially the BCS Poll. This is despite the fact that Mark Richt coaches in The SEC with 5 Top 10 teams in every poll today, while Mack Brown plays in what’s left of the Big XII with 4 top teams who just up and quit the Big XII. The Big XII has 1 team in the BCS Top 10, and that one team is ranked WORSE than Georgia and a total of 3 SEC teams are all 3 higher ranked than the 1 Big XII in the top 10 of the BCS Poll. The Big XII lost # 8 Texas A and M and # 14 Nebraska, both of whom up and quit the Big XII. Winning games in the Big XII is easy. And, it is easier now without all these teams who just up and quit the conference because Texas is allowed to keep more of their revenues in the Big XII than any other member. It’s totally unfair. Obviously.
The Bleacher Report with no replies from anyone ever, you reference says Mark Richt has only 57 NFL Draft Picks.
College – Alabama – Florida – LSU – UGA
2012.…….8..…………2.…….5.…….7

Total…….52.….……60.…….57……72
In fact, that is how many LSU has in the Mark Richt era, 57.
72 NFL Draft Picks is how many Mark Richt actually has being a head coach starting 2001.
You didn’t really expect to compare the only 2 other coaches you can find, one who started as a college football head coach 18 years before Mark Richt started being a head coach, and one who started as a college football head coach 14 years before Mark Richt started being a head coach, and try to compare those number of NFL Draft Picks with Mark Richt starting 2001 – the Mark Richt era in question.
Did you ?
Mack Brown has 68 NFL Draft Picks in the last 15 years.
Mark Richt has 72 NFL Draft Picks in the last 12 years.
Who has done better ShadeTree ?
Steve Spurrier is a jerk who said just this month that Alabama could beat an NFL team, and then Texas A and M as I guaranteed on this blog since the day we beat # 4 Florida at the stadium where the Gator Bowl is held every year, beat Alabama. Texas A and M lost to Florida, who preferred Ron Zook to Steve Spurrier as their coach. South Carolina lost to Florida 11-44 losing by 33 whom Mark Richt beat 17-9. So, while Mark Richt beat Florida by 8 points, Steve Spurrier lost by 33 to his alma mater who would not hire him back there no matter what and sent him to South Carolina instead. Texas A and M also lost to LSU who Florida also beat, while Mark Richt beat Florida by 8 points.
______________________________________________________________
WE TOOK BALL AWAY FROM FL 8 TIMES, COMING UP WITH 6 OF THE 8
______________________________________________________________
Nothing could be better from our point of view to match us up with Florida again than to play Notre Dame who has beat NO ONE. Notre Dame claims to have beat EVERY CONFERENCE but Notre Dame has not beat any of The SEC teams who make up 5 of the Top 10 in the BCS Poll. In fact, Notre Dame has not beat any team in the Top 10 of any Poll today.
64-37 South Carolina Steve Spurrier starting 2005
74-29 Georgia Mark Richt starting when Spurrier got to USCe 2005
Mark Richt has consistently out-recruited Steve Spurrier and Steve Spurrier does not have a winning record against Mark Richt head-to-head.
In the NFL Draft starting 2005 when Steve Spurrier began coaching South Carolina, South Carolina has had 22 NFL Draft selections. You are not seriously comparing Steve Spurrier’s NFL Draft Picks with Mark Richt, now are you ShadeTree ?
I don’t have to mention any of your specifics trying to refute :
# 20 Total Defense UGA 2012
# 18 Scoring Defense UGA 2012
when your specifics are included in the totals. The facts are that UGA’s 2012 Defense on the topic of your blog has 11 NFL Draft Selections coming from it.
There is NO WAY you can say that UGA’s Defense 2012 is no bloody good ShadeTree.
Why don’t you put your team in your handle ShadeTree, or are you afraid to for obvious reasons ?
(1) Your post is a joke comparing 14 and 18 years more coaching than Mark Richt
(2) Your point is to say UGA’s defense is no good 2012
(3) Your post says Spurrier & Brown put more in NFL Draft than Mark Richt
(4) Mark Richt’s UGA Defense 2012 will have 11 NFL selections alone
(5) Your Bleacher Report URL Link is utterly incorrect, isn’t it ?
(6) 57 NFL Draft Selections Mark Richt since 2001 or 72 ?
(7) Which is it ShadeTree ?
(8) What eats at you ShadeTree is that you are afraid to tell us your team in your handle for obvious reasons while UGA has beat # 4 Florida for the best win of any BCS Contender.
Mark Richt is well-loved by the kids today, and has been all 12 years he has been here. His Fortë is recruiting. Since 2001 when he started coaching, Mark Richt has averaged the # 7 recruiting ranking averaging both Scout.com and Rivals. Mark Richt has therefore averaged better than every school in the United States in recruiting rankings except for Southern California, and Mark Richt will have had more NFL Draft Selections than Southern California after the GREAT 2012 UGA DEFENSE is drafted in the up-coming NFL Draft.
Southern California has had 74 NFL Draft Selections 2001 through 2012
Mark Richt has had 72 NFL Draft Selections 2001 through 2012.
Mark Richt will have 11 NFL Draft Selections from this National Championship Contender 2012 alone, while Southern California under Lame Kitten has 4 Losses already and a 5th Loss Saturday with UGA # 3 in every poll while Southern California is UNRANKED in every poll. Southern California started 2012 ranked # 1 ahead of Mark Richt but ends the season unranked with 7-Losses while Mark Richt plays for a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 2012. With Matt Barkley and Robert Woods both of USC QB and WR both dropping a ton in the NFL Draft 2013, USC will have to have 10 NFL Draft Selections to catch Georgia over the 12-year Mark Richt era.

USC needs 10 draft picks 2013 to have more than UGA Mark Richt era

The kids LOVE Mark Richt. He is a fine man whom the kids want to play for, and he does a BETTER JOB OF PUTTING PLAYERS INTO THE NFL THAN ANY COACH IN AMERICA.

Now, who is your team in here trying to say otherwise and being wrong about it,
