If Mark Richt and the Bulldogs win two more games they'll play for BCS title. (Brandt Sanderlin/AJC)
This is why we love sports. This is why it’s the greatest reality show we have going – unscripted and unexpected, with fluctuating emotions of fan bases from game to game.
Who foresees this? Who looks at a 0-2 Georgia team last season, with coach Mark Richt under assault by fans and media, with the program a non-factor in the SEC for more than two years, boat-raced in the conference by Alabama, Florida and LSU, and thinks: By the end of next season, those Bulldogs may have a chance to play for the BCS championship?
After some early hiccups in Athens Saturday, Georgia buried Georgia Southern 45-14. That’s one development that surprised nobody. What changed the landscape of college football’s national race is what occurred later that evening.
Kansas State, the BCS’s No. 1 team, got body-slammed 52-24 by Baylor (the same Baylor that was 1-5 in the Big 12 before kickoff). Oregon, the BCS’s No. 2 team, was upset at home by Stanford in overtime 17-14 (the same Oregon team whose point totals had ranged from 42 to 70 in its first 10 games).
These developments made happy people of everybody in the SEC office and a significant portion of the population in Georgia and Alabama. The losses by Kansas State and Oregon opened the door to the winner of the SEC championship game getting a pass into the BCS title game. When the new BCS rankings came out Sunday night, the top five teams were as expected: 1) Notre Dame; 2) Alabama; 3) Georgia; 4) Florida; 5) Oregon. Kansas State dropped all the way to sixth.
For the Bulldogs, it comes down to this: Win two games and they’re in. Yes, really.
Beat rival Georgia Tech at home next week (they will be favored) and Alabama in two weeks at the Georgia Dome (they will be underdogs) and the Dogs will play for their first BCS title.
Suddenly, residents of this state – at least those not associated with the teams on North Ave. – bark in unison.
Richt will have a difficult job trying to keep his players focused on a football game this week. That’s not the norm. Getting players to think about a game against their state rival shouldn’t be a chore. But the circumstances are extraordinary. Georgia’s last national championship came in 1980, and even if the Dogs need three more victories to win another one, nobody imagined they would get this close – not this year.
Just consider the reaction by some Georgia players on Twitter immediately following Oregon’s loss to Stanford:
• Quarterback Aaron Murray (@aaronmurray11): “Yesssssssssssss!!!!!! The Murray household just went crazyyyyy!!!!!!”
• Running back Keith Marshall (@truthh4): “Can’t lie. I’m excited right now.” But he followed that with: “Gotta focus on GT first.”
• Wide receiver Tavarres King (@TKUnoDos): “ALL SMILES!!!!!!!!”
• Cornerback Sanders Commings: “Thank you Baylor, thank you Stanford.” And Sunday morning: “And I wake up pinching myself. Yea it’s real. We control our own destiny.”
• Safety Marc Deas (@DatBoiDeas): “Show me the BCS!!!!”
Richt will try to ground them all this week. But one thing Georgia has done well is respond to adversity, whether it’s a loss (like getting pounded by South Carolina) or struggling early in against an inferior opponent (like Saturday against Georgia Southern). Maybe that grounding effect can work in high times, too.
“The one thing that’s different about this team is our composure,” wide receiver Chris Conley said following Saturday’s win. “We haven’t had guys freaking out on the sideline when something’s not going right.”
It follows that now they can’t freak out when everything is going right.

Two best teams in the SEC are playing and that is the way it should be. Oregon, Notre Dame or Kansas St. would not have only one loss or be undefeated if they played in the SEC.

Thought UGA fans would be interested in this on the bugs’ blog:
One good thing…since the game is in Athens, they will use ACC ref’s. I know that the ACC refs are not the best, but they at least have seen the GT offense every week and have attended the seminar that Johnson taught several years ago about what is an actual illegal Chop block.

What a great opportunity for Tech ! Based on UGAs history I thought this game would never have national implications. Besides Tech has the huge benefit of being considered a “mail-it-in” gimme.

# 3 AP Poll
# 3 USA Today Coaches’ Poll
# 3 Harris Poll
# 3 BCS Poll
Play # 2 BCS Poll a week from Saturday, at 4pm at the Georgia Dome, whom we have done better against than any opponent Alabama has ever played with Bama winning 36 of the 63 games.
# 1 ? Well, Notre Dame, of course. And, while they have beat no team, UGA has already beat # 4 BCS Florida. And, face-off against # 2 BCS Alabama.
Lame Kitten ends his 5-Loss Season this Saturday against Notre Dame, who has beat no one.
Southern California stated the season ranked # 1, but ends their regular season with 5-Losses and unranked.
Of all teams, Alabama wants to play us the least. And, to this poster, I ask :

As JS said, “GA got pounded by SC”, so in reality and fairness (yes, I am a DAWG fan) why should Oregon after a slim OT loss to Stanford fall behind GA? Will be glad when this BCS mess is done with, it has no consistency and is so not fair to all teams.

LSU, ahead of UGA???? -they lost to Florida – they beat Auburn by 2 points, and should have lost at Home to Ole Miss – all teams UGA beat – crushing Ole Miss and Auburn. Vandy gave Florida, USC and virtually everyone fits – UGA destroys by over 45. USC dominated Dawgs when UGA played with 4 returning D players getting their first action and a gimpy Jarvis – but USC got crushed by over 30 to Florida – who UGA beat. Basically all the haters have to hang their hat on is yes – in one of 11 games – UGA got beat, and soundly. Since the UGA starters have returned and gotten up to game speed – and Jarvis has healed – its been pretty much lights out. And I think its pretty obvious that UGA has gotten much better as the season has gone on – even with the losses of Bennett, Brown, Arbry, etc. Will be an interesting next two weeks

I agree with the first commentator, if Richt wins the SEC I won’t criticize him again. You have to take the bad with the good, and I guess a losing (but improving) record against UF and a tendency to not show up for big games is worth it to dominate Tech, go to SEC Championship games and go on the occasional run, like the second half of this season and the ‘07 season.
It’s clear that Richt’s our man, so let’s get behind him and stay behind him. Even if sometimes hurts.

What time of year it is when you lose has always played a part in the rankings. A champion is supposed to finish strong if they are truly the best. The Dawgs are doing that this year after the defense showed up for the Florida game and has played well since. I agree with the current standings. No other 10-1 team is playing as well as UGA at this moment. No one should be shocked that UGA moved ahead of Oregon. If you’re going to lose, lose early.

I thought Richt was done when we went 0-2 following a nightmare season with losses to CU and Central Florida. I give him a lot of credit for keeping the team together last year through that and making their way to the SEC Title game.
This was Georgia’s best shot at a national title because of the unique combination of historically weak schedule and one of Georgia’s stronger rosters in the lat 20 years. It looked like the USC debacle was going to cost the Dawgs big, but it turns out it has no bearing on winning the SEC or National Championship titles. Like a mulligan in golf, that tee shot didn’t count. It has no bearing on Georgia’s chances to win it all.
There is certainly some luck in that. OSU is on probation, so their undefeated team doesn’t count. Baylor helped us (yes BAYLOR) by being the FIRST team to have a losing record, but beat a #1 BCS team in the last month of the season. Oregon lost a nail biter and had 3-4 chances to win that game. I thought Bama losing would hurt Georgia because IF UGA wins, they no longer beat the #1 team which certainly looks good in the beauty contest.
Last, whichever SEC teams comes out of Atlanta with the title will likely play Notre Dame. While they are a good team (better than many think), they aren’t the juggernaut that one expects to play in the national title game. THIS IS THE YEAR TO DO IT and it within the Dawgs will get the chance.

Notre Dame has not beat a single team who is in the Top 10 of either the AP Poll nor the Coaches’ Poll.
How good Notre Dame is, will be determined when they play a team from The SEC.

Wreckmaniac – thought you Tech guys could actually read. In my post I said “USC Dominated UGA” and “Uga got beat – and soundly” – Not sure how you twisted that into saying I suggested it was a fluke – but then again – you are a Tech Nerd – so logic need not apply. Has UGA played better since Ogeltree, Rambo and Commings played a few games together? Since Jarvis got over his knee issues? I would say yes – would it have mattered that night in Columbia? Maybe, but probably not. USC played a great game – but if you actually watched it – it became a blowout on 3 plays – Play 1 – underthrown deep pass from Connor Shaw – Rambo in position to pick – and USC wrestles ball away. Play 2 – UGA marching – Murray pass batted straight up in air and right to USC. Play 3 – Ace Sanders brilliant punt return. 21-0 – 8 minutes gone in game. It happens – and full credit to USC for making those plays and winnning game.
If the two teams played again – it does not mean USC would again win by 28. If it did – then how do you explain USC beating Vandy by 4, who UGA beat by 45? Or USC losing to UF by 33 – who UGA beat by 8? Every game and the circumstances in that game will dictate how that particular game plays out – Florida is a great team – but they needed a late blocked punt to beat LA -LA. Is Ga. Tech 3 td’s worse than MTSU (or BYU for that matter)? They were on one saturday – but overall prtobably not.
Thanks for playing – good luck in the Dungeons and Dragons tourney.

The reason why The SEC is # 2 # 3 and # 4 in the BCS Poll is because 10-1 in The SEC is better than any undefeated team who has not played any of the 6 Top 10 SEC teams. South Carolina has dropped in the polls tonight outside the Top 10 but the other 5 SEC teams are top 10 in every single poll, and South Carolina minus my hero Marcus Lattimore (Anyone heard any news?) faces off at Clempsum Farmers this Saturday 7 pm ESPN. Maybe they will give us an update on fine young man Marcus Lattimore ?
Clempsum Farmers have beat NO TEAM RANKED IN ANY POLL WHATSOEVER.
South Carolina certainly beat # 3 in the BCS Georgia (UGA is also # 3 in every other poll bar none.)
Georgia would wipe the floors with Clempsum Farmers.
Stands to reason that (1) South Carolina even without Marcus Lattimore will beat Clempsum Farmers, who have not beat a ranked team all 2012. (2) Since Clempsum Farmers LOST to Florida State, who have not beat a ranked team all 2012 except for Clempsum Farmers, that Florida will wipe the floor with FSU at Florida State 3:30 pm ET this Saturday. ACC please. This will put the ACC where it belongs with not 1 single Top 10 team again for the ACC in 2012. If Florida QB Jeff Driskel cannot play, they still beat Florida State who beat no team ranked in any poll all 2012 whatsoever except for the Clempsum Farmers who beat no team who is any top 25 poll.
ACC CHUMPionship Game ? 7 pm Saturday week. That is AFTER The SEC Championship Game is over and features 6-5 Georgie tek, Miami of Florida conceding their berth to Georgie tek. How ironic is that ? Both Miami of Florida and Georgie tek BOTH on NCAA Probation in Football and yet Georgie tek with 1 Conference Championship starting 1957 will take over the ACC CHUMPionship berth either way the 6-5 Duke and 6-5 Miami of Florida turns out this Saturday.
How anti-climactic that AFTER # 3 UGA and # 2 Alabama face-off, we will have the ACC CHUMPionship game. Just all 3 teams, forfeit your rights to play in the ACC Dr. Pepper CHUMPionship game. Put us out of our misery having to even hear the score.

UGA played two teams that that are ranked, beat an over-rated Gator team with a D-3 Qb and lousy offense, and lost to USC 35-7. The rest of their cream puff schedule is a combined 47-63. Do they truly deserve to be ranked this high? NO! If Dogs played in the west, they have lost at least 3 to AL, A&M, and LSU. Instead they play in the east, which is WEAK! If Dogs played the Irish schedule they would be no better than 8-3. Skip the “Remarkable” season garbage and play a real schedule you puppies.
