Falcons' real stars came on defense, like this fumble return for a touchdown by Jonathan Babineaux. (Curtis Compton/AJC)
Sometime after the game’s first pass went off Roddy White’s hands and turned into an interception, and Michael Turner was stuffed for no gain and then dropped a pass on the Falcons’ second and third plays, and Matt Ryan (five interceptions) mutated into some unrecognizable being, it probably occurred to everybody: This wasn’t going to be one of those games when we would all fawn over the Falcons’ offense.
“We were kind of sleepwalking through the first quarter,” coach Mike Smith said.
Sleepwalking? Actually, that would’ve been improvement. Curly mixing up the cake flour with the dynamite powder is when things kind of went sideways.
Five interceptions. Six turnovers. A coach who forgot the challenge rule and as a result was penalized and potentially lost an overturn of a fumble.
They won anyway.
This is kind of like a Big Foot sighting. Don’t believe that grainy footage that seemingly shows a scoreboard reading: Falcons 23, Arizona 19? Understandable. Half the players in Atlanta’s locker room probably didn’t believe it, either.
The other half play defense.
“It goes against the law of averages,” Tony Gonzalez said.
If you were a Falcons’ player Sunday, you skipped showering after this game, ran to your car and sped home before some giant hand descended from the heavens and a voice cried out: “Hold everything! A plague of locusts and parting the Red Sea, that’s crazy enough. But even I have my limits.”
Ryan threw five interceptions (three in the first quarter) but the Falcons pulled out a win. This happened for two reasons: 1) The defense was great for much of the day, and until eight minutes into the fourth quarter had provided the team’s only touchdown (Jonathan Babineaux’s fumble returned after a sack and forced fumble by John Abraham); 2) Arizona, except for wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, doesn’t have an offense so much as it has a vaudeville act.
The Cardinals entered the week ranked 31st in offense and scoring. And now we ask: How bad must Jacksonville be?
The Cardinals were gift-wrapped six extra possessions, started five drives in Falcons’ territory (the 9, 18, 35, 16 and 23) and still came away with only one touchdown (13 points off turnovers).
Ryan became the first quarterback to throw five interceptions and no touchdowns and win anyway since Bart Starr in 1967.
“I’m in good company,” Ryan cracked.
Run, Falcons. Run fast.
They are 9-1 with a three-game lead in the NFC South and six games remaining. They have the added advantage of not having to wait for BCS rankings to come out because the NFL standings include no human element or computer rankings. Otherwise, the word, “ewww” probably would be spit out somewhere.
John Abraham laughed. “The only thing we have to worry about is as long as we can put something in the left side (win column) and not the right side, we’re fine.”
Abraham sacked Arizona’s Ryan Lindley in the second quarter just as Lindley was trying to pass. The ball came loose and everybody stood around, thinking it was an incomplete pass, until Abraham screamed, “Pick it up!” So Babineaux picked it up and ran into the end zone. The play was ruled a touchdown and it stood up on appeal, giving the Falcons a 13-10 lead.
Ryan put together one great touchdown drive. That’s all he needed. With Arizona leading 19-16, he completed four of five passes for 54 yards. Running back Michael Turner scored from the one-yard line (honest) for the lead with 6:40 left. Checkmate.
The Falcons escaped. So did Smith. In the third quarter, he threw a challenge flag in hopes of overturning a fumble by Jason Snelling. But all changes of possession are automatically reviewed and throwing the red flag is an automatic unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
Strangely, the NFL also nullifies the challenge, effectively saying, “No replay for you!” (Seinfeld’s “Soup Nazi” would’ve been a great replacement official.)
“We’ve got to find a way for the coach to not throw the challenge flag at the wrong time,” Smith said. “I can assure you that one will be addressed very quickly.”
He’ll put himself in timeout. Not that it matters. Style points don’t factor into final scores or standings in the NFL. For that, the Falcons are thankful.

Why wont we try that other running back Antoine Smith? We also need a blocking Fullback. We truly missed Sean Weatherspoon and linebacker, and Abraham is still not getting any help on the other side. What is the status of Brent Grimes?

That stank.
Falcons better fix whats broke, or Tampa will beat them soundly next week. And there’s a lot that’s broke. Turner less than 50 yds rushing, again. If they keep giving up long runs, which hopefully Spoon can help stop, the kid from Tampa might go for 300 next week.

Would be interesting to see the last time an NFL team won a game with 6 total turnovers. But I will certainly take a ugly win over an ugly loss anytime.
The NFL has to change that challenge rule. Ok, if they want to access a 15 yards penalty on an automatic booth review, that’s fine. But to say we are not going to review the play at all to see if the referees made a mistake which is required by rule, well, that makes no sense. By the way, I watched the play after I got home, and I think it was a good play and would have been upheld.

What do you not get about forfeiting your right to a challenge when you prematurely try to ask for it? It was already going to be reviewed… Smith the all wise one, instead he tried to pull a fast one (like he did when pulled calling a TO when he did not have one) like he did earlier this season… There’s an equalization of football fate…

The rules are trying to help the coaches save challenges, by reviewing scoring plays and turnovers……Smithy forgot that somehow.
Besides, luckily for us, it would have been upheld. Great play, and eerily similar to something someone has done to us before, I believe the Saints last season or so.

Yeah, it wasn’t a pretty win, and yeah, we’re playing Tampa Bay next week… but did you guys see the Tampa – Carolina game? Tampa baaaaarely squeaked out a win against Carolina – and that in OT, might I add. Remember when we were getting flak for barely beating Carolina? I don’t hear anybody criticising the Bucs over it.
Come to think of it, several games either ended in OT or were decided in the last few minutes of the games – many near-upsets occurred. The Falcons aren’t the only team pulling out ugly wins – so let’s savor the win and focus on beating Tampa next week – I don’t care if it’s by 1 point or 21 points.

Tampa’s Doug Martin will rush for 225 & 3 tds next week. And Tampa has a qb too named Josh Freeman unlike Cardinals two back-up qbs. Tampa will expose what we all fear. A truly weak defense that looks good against weak NFL teams… Matt Ryan played awful. He had 10 balls tipped by linemen and clanked an int off another Tampa dl. Mike Smith doesn’t throw challenge flag when he should then throws it when he shouldn’t. If I’m Arthur Blank I ask “What in the helll was that”?

Again, played down to Arizona’s level. However, I’ll take a win with a team that played ugly than a team who dominated the entire game, only to lose on a last-second field goal. (Saw enough of those in the Glanville/June Jones era).

It was a flashback Jeff. Not a good one either. As a Falcon watcher from the start I swore that was Chris Miller and the inept offense in Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. Just an illusion. It was Matthew Ryan and his inept offense in the Georgia Dome. Michael Turner needs to go. The guy has become completely worthless. Guess injury to Julio Jones has made him mere mortal. Oh well. Tony Gonzalez is still my favorite Falcon. Matty Lice was a liability on this day. I do not know where his mind was Sunday afternoon but it was not on football. Cannot argue with 9-1 record but home victory over New Orleans Saints mandatory. If Falcons drop season series to allow Bayou boys into playoffs it could be a short playoff run. Again! Was Roddy White texting on that interception? Did Falcon QB complete as many passes to his own guys as jhe did to Arizona CArdinals? That was a Jeff George type performance. Pathetic. Oh well. Onward and upward. I hope.

Not a troll. Huge Falcon fan. But this team scares the bee-jeezus out of me. Today we played a team with not one, but two rookie tackles. We played a team, who in the second half, was playing their third string quaterback who had never thrown a pass in the NFL. We won by 4 points. This is beyond outrageous for a 9-1 team. Almost unbelievable. And at home. Make all the excuses you want, but this team is flawed in huge and serious ways. They’ve had all season to fix what is wrong and they have not fixed anything to date. It’s amazing. Coach Smith keeps saying the same old same old, but nothing changes.Special teams are atrocious excluding the punter and place kicker. No punt returner. No kick returner. No kick-off coverage to speak of. No changes. Where’s Massaqouis? Where’s Matthews? Where’s Antoine Smith? Did Bierman attend the game today? If so, where was he? Two rookie tackles for crying out loud. The list could go on. I see a 3-3 finish and the usual one and done in the play-offs. Wish it weren’t so…

I can’t understand how the coaches don’t correct glaring problems that have to be fixed for the Falcons to have any success in the playoffs. James is not a punt returner, he doesn’t have a clue. The O line mainly Sam Baker doesn’t recognize a blitz, he don’t even engage the bltizer .I know Turner has been a great running back for us in the past but he just doesn’t have anything left. If he does have a hole he might get 4 or 5 yards. Look how he has done this season, we have to make a change.

Haha, figures Choke would come out of the wood work after today’s debacle. Been pretty quiet this season so far, for good reason.
Obviously this kind of effort would lead to a loss against almost any other team but let’s not get too negative about it. Every good team has lost to someone bad this year (Dallas beat the Giants, Minny beat SF, these same Cards beat NE in Foxboro). Point is they are 9-1 and have insured a fifth straight winning season. They simply need to stop worrying about what people are saying about them and finish strong. TB looks pretty good right now but we should be fine if we get back to playing like we did in weeks 1-3…

One in the group watching the game called Smith a Dumb A for throwing the challenge flag. I asked him to explain the infield fly rule since he was so smart. Yeah. Punked.

speaking of not knowing the rules…AZ didn’t seem to know the rules at the end of the 1st half when Jones caught a pass over the middle and fell to the ground on purpose to stop the play and call timeout to kick a field goal, all AZ had to do was not touch him and let the clock run out but those dopes (thank god) touched him immediately to end the play. I was surprised none of the announcers recognized that.

As expected…the anti-Ryan folks are back at it. Kind of reminds me when I was a kid, never got props when I cleaned my room everyday…but let me miss making the bed on a Saturday morning, and the firing squad is lined up! Come on people…our O stunk the place up. But this IS the same offense that can put 30 points on the board on anyone when they are hot. While we are right to be concerned about the lackluster performance yesterday, I don’t think the ship has struck the iceberg yet. No need to jump ship. I expect CMS will correct this. My question is will the negative bloggers be back saying how well the team performed when they play to their potential? Yeah, sure they will!
Something else occurred to me…I never visit other team’s local sports coverage just to slam the other team. I read the coverage and see what our opponents fans think of their team. I don’t have the need to go on the blogs and spew venom. What’s missing in these peoples’ lives that they have to come on here and continually slam the Falcons? Just don’t get it!
As for the glaring need for a punt returner… the only question seems to be how long will the Falcons continue to use Franks? Really…15 of 16 punts fair caught? He fair catches on the 5, but lets it bounce on the 25. Don’t understand the logic of him still having the job. Can somebody enlighten me?
All in all, not a good week for the ‘Birds, but they are too sound a team to let this go on for long.

When you have no depth roster wise (Douglas is the alternative, and guess what, he’s injury prone), of course you don’t throw out Franks… By the way Mr. Observant, are you watching what is happening front of the punt returner? The Falcons are getting blown up on the second level in the return game the past two years… They didn’t block well for Weems, and are doubly bad in cleaning up lanes for Franks. They value not turning the ball over instead of returns…

Ryan wasn’t as bad as the numbers indicate. Not every INT is the QB’s fault.
If Arizona didn’t have confidence in Skelton, they should have just run the Wildcat all game like the Panthers did in the Dome back in 2006.

Once again JSS, you prove what I think about you is true. What’s with the “Mr. Observant” jab? Dude, why can’t you just respond to people in a civilized, respectful way? You sound like an intelligent football fan, but your attitude prevents people from taking you seriously. I simply made a statement about the Falcons lack of a return game, and you slam me. You obviously have issues with the Falcons… just like I have issues with the Saints. That’s part of being a fan. Can’t we have a respectful discussion of the game without the personal attacks?
As for the return game…yes I do see what is going on in front of Franks. Several times this year he has had 10 or so yards of open field, but he still FC’s the ball. It would be nice to have someone who can take a chance every once and a while. Granted, a turnover on a return is usually devastating, but a broken return for a TD is also. (e.g., Devin Hester). Would be nice to see an effort by the Falcons to fix that problem. Unlike our offensive woes this week, the return game has been a problem each and every week.
Waiting, hopefully, for a civil response.

Do you guys remember when you were college and at the end of the night at the local college bar you would get the HOTTEST chick to go home with you becasue it was penny beer night and she had to much to drink? Now do you remember when it was not penny beer night and you had to go home with the ugly chick or the fat chick?
Well Falcons you can relate, because we dont always get the HOT chick to go home with, sometimes you got to take the FAT, UGLY chick or just the UGLY Chick, or the Fat chick…take your pick!
It makes you a better person and when the HOT chick sees you with the FAT chick, she comes back around because she thinks you are a good guy for “making sure the fat chick got home safe”!

Falcons had better address the running game now, or this off-season will be another one where we fans are haunted by what-coulda-been-if-ATL-could-just-convert-short-yardage. “3 yards and a cloud of dust” may not be exciting, but finesse only gets you so far. Right now, the Falcons’ running game is embarrassing compared to past teams. 50-yard totals? For an entire game? Use-ta-could count on 50 yards in a possession… Better fix it.

@ Najeh Good to see you back. Haven’t noticed you posting lately. Maybe I just missed reading your posts. You usually tell it like it is.
I agree about Matt’s performance. I believe two of the int’s were due to tips at the line. One other was when Roddy batted it up in the air, (albeit Matt did throw behind him on that one). And I’m still scratching my head over Whisenhunt’s decision to bench Skelton. I guess he had his reasons, but their offense laid down after that. The good thing about Matt’s performance is that I am confident that he will work on his game and improve next week. Hopefully, the Oline will give him enough time to move around in the pocket.

Don’t remember much of my College days (it was during the 70’s, you know… Drugs, Sex and Rock and Roll) but I do relate. Yeah, this game was like waking up with the fat and ugly girl the next morning. Not only that, but she had BO. However, I’ll take the win and hope the Coaching Staff and players address the glaring issues and show up next week with the attitude we’ve become accustomed to. We didn’t get to be 9-1 by being lucky all the time, so I’ll take the luck when we get it.

Also, nice to see that you are comfortable using the language “acquiring women.” I’m sure your soon-to-be wife is so excited, she is about to be acquired. Did you engage one of Atlanta’s finest M&A legal teams to help you, or better yet, a real estate attorney?

You got a 28 yard return out of Franks yesterday, the problem is only partially on the returner… And the “Mr. Observant” line is not a jab, it is an admonition… Open your eyes, watch the game or listen to it… Just as Turner’s lack of production is not just a fact of his being “fat, out-of-shape, or slow to the hole,”
And when was Hester’s last TD on a punt return? Jacoby Jones showed the last two weeks the difference in teams that are actively engaged in maximizing the return game. Meanwhile, certain fans keep trying to morph the conservative nature of how the Falcons manage games… Just because you have a supposedly high powered offense, it does not translate when a large portion of the support structure is not available…

A couple of years ago if a game would have started like yesterdays game, it would have been all over the Birds by half time. They just keep finding ways to win games and giant kudo’s to the defense. At this point, I don’t think it really matters a bit what the Falcons do in the regular season going forward. If they don’t win in the playoffs, everyone will point fingers at Ryan, Smith and co. and say they aren’t capable of winning when it matters. The talk shows all say this when they talk about the Falcons. They have the best record, but….. The first team they face with a decent defense that has any kind of offense will expose them as one deminsional. They used to control games with the run and pass when needed. Worked great in the regular season but failed in the playoffs when they trailed. Now they can pass but will need to run to close out games. I say commit the rest of the regular season to fixing the running game and play to position yourself to be balanced in the playoffs.

JSS,
Ok, I give up. You are obviously the only one on this blog who has the knowledge to intelligently discuss Falcon football. I tip my hat to you. I accept the admonishment. I really need to learn more about my team and be more careful in my watching habits. I guess my 46 years of watching the Falcons hasn’t helped me gain your insight. I concede.
Oh, by the way…you made my point with your mention of Jacoby Jones. Against the Steelers, he had about 10 yards free in front of him, he made the catch and turned it into a huge play. I’m just saying that Franks continually fair catches that type of punt. I guess one 28 yard return is enough to justify his being the sole returner. And as for the Hester reference…I wasn’t suggesting we get Hester, I realize he’s not done much lately, I’m suggesting that maybe we could look for the same type of player, a diamond in the rough, if you will, that can break the return occasionally. Just my humble, semi-intelligent observations, but I’m sure you know something I don’t, so I guess I’m wasting my time.

It’s really funny to see how the Falcants’ players are all so excited because they barely won yet another game. They will lose the first game in the playoffs.

It’s time to start worrying. I kind of noticed it during the N.O. game when Ryan had to throw the ball close to 50 times because the running game was not working. Then it continued into this week. I’m a die hard Falcon fan as we all are. However, if we don’t mystically get our running game going, it going to be another one and done in the playoffs. We can’t beat quality teams with our passing game only. Also, it’s good to have a running game when you have a late lead to milk clock (just saying).

This is the NFL, they all get paid. Any week, any team, any time.
The Steelers have lost to Oakland and Tennessee
The Giants have 4 losses and got curb stomped by Cincinnatti.
The 49rs were just tied at home by a Rams team that got smoked by the Jets
The Aints have already managed to lose 5 times including an impressive home loss to the Chiefs who haven’t held a LEAD in a game until last week. The septic tank aints also managed to lose at home to the Redskins. Both beaten on the road by the Falcons.

Everyone likes to put down the competition Atlanta has faced, but consider the fact that leading up to every game for the last four weeks has come against “desperate” opponents that had to win to save their season. In 3 of those games ATL came out on top, and should have in NO, as well. This AZ defense is one of the best in the league (tamed Tom Brady as they took down NE) and showed it yesterday. Not only that but their team was well-rested coming off a bye and knew this was a must-win to stay in the NFC West hunt. Good win for ATL despite everything that happened.

We played a good damn defense! They knew we couldn’t run ~ so they brought the heat! Julio was a decoy and they knew it! Our D looked good agianst the B and C string QBs. I’m not sure whether our anemic running game is a result of Turner out of gas ~ or O-Line can’t tackle ~ or both! It’s a BIG problem that needs to get solved quick! We will make the playoffs but must play better than we did this week or “one and done” again. Our secondary personnel can’t tackle running backs. They should cut their dreads and work on open field tackle skills. Once a back gets past the Linebackers ~ they are gone! Robinson should just simply run the other direction – away from the play. I give Nolan alot of credit in getting as much from this group as he does ~ especially now that everyone is so banged up! This team will have to run and stop the run to get very much further. Mark these words!!!

JSS, As a matter of fact, yes…I have seen them all. I was at the first Falcon game in Atlanta Stadium. I watched them lose to the Eagles. I was 12 at the time and Johnny Unitas was my hero. After my first Falcon game, however, Johnny took a back seat to my Falcons. I have sat in rain and snow, watched terrible defeats, endured unbelievable disappointments, and still, I love my Falcons. I tailgated with the original Gritz Blitz crowd on Sunday mornings and sat in disbelief in 1980 when Danny White put an arrow through our hearts with the pass to Drew Pearson. I think that is why it bothers me so that you come on this blog and slam my fellow Falcon fans. We love our Falcons, come he#* or high water. We are not the type to jump ship over a bad season (or for that matter, 10 bad seasons). I realize they are not the perfect team, but by God, I love them for trying every week. I have tried to ask you to be civil and not so condescending but you continue to spew your vitriol every week. I guess it makes you feel superior to sit at your keyboard and act as if you’re the only one who can put together a coherent sentence. I wish I knew what made you tick. You seem to be an intelligent football fan, but then you spout forth your hateful comments. I guess I’m the sucker for even responding to your comments, but I can’t let my ‘Birds go undefended.
I still believe these Falcons are the ones that will finally go all the way. If they don’t…well, they are still my team, and I will support them to the end.
And, as Forrest Gump so eloquently put it…” That’s all I have to say about that!”
Go Falcons!

66, your problem is (and it is a problem) because you never acknowledge that others have invested just as much time as you have in watching Falcons football… Sorry, but the hiring of Petrino was unacceptable. I walked away as a consumer of their product then, NFL football is a business… “Hateful comments?” Man please, a fool comes here daily and disparages my Mother, my fiancée, and anything else his demented mind can froth forth… I won’t even get into the user-name thieves, social deviants, and just plain perverts masquerading around here as Falcons fans… Say what you want about those over the line Saints fans, they were never the starters of the mess that these AJC Blogs have sunk down to… I remember the day that it all started back in 2005 after Katrina… As a then Falcons fan, it opened my eyes to what type of people I was spending my money as a 19 year season ticket holder to associate myself with in AFC Stadium and then the Dome… They might be obnoxious (most times with cause), but they are right about this fact, in your ways, you people are just plain creepy…
“I can’t let my ‘Birds go undefended.” Please, what is this, a Looney Tunes cartoon? Remember the one where Bugs said those exact same lines? It is one thing to support a team, it is another thing to be both unwilling to admit flaws, and even greater to not admit that those flaws truly exists at all!
“as Forrest Gump so eloquently put it…” That’s all I have to say about that!” Sorry to break this to you, but Winston Groom’s fictional character was just that, “fiction.” Eric Roth (he wrote the screenplay) put it better: “Stupid is, as stupid does!” Sums up most of the Falcons supporters on these blogs… You are associating yourself with user-name thieves, men who advocate misogyny, the most varient forms of homophobia, and racism that would make Theodore BIlbo blush! Be proud of your associations there, I’d rather be an outsider…

1. Never said I had exclusive rights to being a long-time fan. Just stated that I was for a point of reference.
2. Thought Petrino was a huge mistake, and he proved all of us of that ilk that it was. He proved it even more during his stay with the Hogs. I chose, as you obviously didn’t, to stay with the team and support them in their efforts to become an elite, perennially winning team in the NFL. And they’re almost there.
3. Sinking to the depths of those who belittle you and your family and friends only lowers you to their level.
4. A rivalry between two cities over their teams is often a heated one. However, I agree some of the things said about NO were over the line and I defended the city at the time.
5. The cartoon reference has me scratching my head. Can’t quite noodle that one out. Guess you’re so far above my intellect I need you to explain. I’m the first one to point out the Falcons faults as I see them. Sometimes I’m right, sometimes I’m wrong. You, on the other hand, are obviously never wrong.
6, Sorry to break this to you, but I read the book by Winston, as well as the very bad sequel. You need to get over the notion that you are the only well-read person on this blog who can throw out what my Mother used to say were “three dollar words”. You remind me of the person who learns a new word from someone, then uses it the entire next week whenever he can, regardless of whether it’s in context or not.
7. “I’d rather be an outsider”…can I have that in writing? (Ha, guess I do!)
I guess I just kinda feel sorry for you that you can’t engage in a civilized discussion of the Falcons, even though I have attempted that on several occasions.
Go Falcons!

Wow so many peiple putting the AngusMunch JSS in his place. You speak of others slamming your mom, wife etc….however you get what you give and you are getting the full plate of it JSS. If you kept it football and tried not to be the smartest person in the world with your google stats more FANS on this Falcon Blog would keep it football also. You take more shots than a AK47 and then try to say others are taking shots at your inbreed family! Many times so many people have approached you about being civil and 66 is really being very considerate to keep it about the Birds and not bash you. Yet when we keep it civil you come right back and talk down to others, take shots and then expext others not to do the same. The mark of a FAN is one that does not quit on the team regardless of how many bad decisions they make….I am sure you have never madr decisions you regret! If you not a fan cool…so be it! People dont crash you for that it is for your attitude and your disrespect you give others who voice a passion for the Team. Its proven we can win without you, dont need you! And as a matter of fact let me be the first to say that I am tired of saying ugly things to you…its not worth it. I know you will come back with another ugly thing to say but it does not matter anymore….you are who we think you are. Go ahead take your shots your inside hidden messages that do all the things that you have accused others of doing…..I dont care anymore….just wish you could be a non-fan elsewhere…but we know it wont happen. So be it and yet we still RISE………UP!

Just to reassure everyone, Coach Smith promises that he is no longer focusing on sitting on small leads in close games. Instead, he has graduated to sitting on the Won-Loss standings.
So give his “process” a little more time, even though the 9-1 record does present the Falcons with the challenge of a big pad to fritter away. With the retrenchment to paleo-conservative game plans, predictable play calling & feature back Michael “Walrus on Dry Land” Turner, the Falcons may well use ALL that pad.
But the impertinent question just won’t go away – Why Stay Stuck on Stupid?

Since you forgot in the previous IR system (1986) there was no challenge system. One of the main opposition points to IR was challenges possibly slowing down the games. The whole challenge system in 1999. What can be challenged and what cannot is a whole different story. Parcell’s abused the earlier system. It is why they came up with the limits that you mentioned. You are forgetting tge evolution of the system as it now!
Thus, the reason that the whole turnover “booth” review after every change of possession was implemented this past March… And to keep someone from Parcelling reviews, they made it an automatic and unchallengeable review…. You challenge in complete disregard ti its automatic nature, then they hit you with a penalty… Parcell’ing had disappeared until Sunday…

And they still WON”T be able to challenge the play!!!
The point, and YOU never got this for trying to be what you are:
1. Most of you didn’t KNOW WHY the rule existed…
2. Most of you don’t GET WHY the rule had a UNSPORTSMANLIKE PENALTY attached to it…

“Dumb? **Maybe**, but **they** made it more punitive that’s all… NFL coaches try to stop the bleeding at turnovers with challenges just to delay the game… Smith knew it, he got caught like one of those old Keystone Cops movies when the outhouse falls apart!”
Now, as you’ve spent 6 days saying that “I’ve” tried to make the rule into something besides what is and was, go kick some real dirt on your diatribes…

He’s paid to know the rules…
“Rule 15, section 9, page 89″
It is not buried in another rule… They even highlighted it in the PREFACE…

It is not your ability to read that is in question, it ALWAYS your comprehension abilities!

And since you made it a PERSONAL THING, take it from someone else…
“Dean Blandino, the NFL’s director of instant replay, explained the review rule, which was instituted in 2011, during a recent appearance on NFL Network on the heels of Smith’s challenge. Details of Blandino’s explanation were reported by NFL.com.
“The rule was put in place really to prevent a team in a challenge situation from creating a delay,” Blandino said, according to NFL.com. “They’re thinking about challenging the play, they commit a foul, jump offside, false start, now they’ve given themselves more time to make that decision.”
