Upsets launch Georgia into BCS title picture (UPDATED)

It took a little while but Aaron Murray and Georgia eventually took charge. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

(LAST UPDATED: 12:18 a.m.)

ATHENS – For as much as Mark Richt prefers his Georgia players focus on opponents (Georgia Southern, Georgia Tech) and not acronyms (SEC, BCS) in these final two weeks of the regular season, it was difficult not to notice what was scrolling on the Sanford Stadium video board before Saturday’s game.

First came the screen shot with large bold letters screaming: “BCS STANDINGS.” Then came the screen shot listing the nation’s top ranked teams, from No. 1 Kansas State to No. 5 Georgia.

The topic is impossible to ignore. It’s why, even in games with seemingly foregone conclusions like Saturday’s against Georgia Southern, some will look at the way things started for the Bulldogs on this day and think, “Uh-oh.”

But don’t overthink this.

Did Georgia come out a little flat, a bit sloppy and probably unfocused against an FCS opponent? Clearly. When a team is one of the nation’s top ranked clubs and just before halftime it is clinging to a 10-7 lead over an inferior opponent — which resides in a full neighborhood to the south of college football’s power structure — it’s a problem.

But after what the Bulldogs have overcome in the past few weeks, a letdown should not have come as a surprise. Most importantly, they recovered. Aaron Murray’s touchdown pass to Malcolm Mitchell with four seconds left in the first half keyed a 31-0 string and Georgia went on to bury Georgia Southern, 45-14.

And who could’ve expected this scenario? Hours after the Bulldogs’ win, the BCS’s No. 1 ranked team, Kansas State, was hammered by Baylor 52-24, and No. 2 Oregon lost at home in overtime to Stanford 17-14. This means No. 3 Notre Dame is certain to take over the No. 1 spot when the new BCS rankings come out Sunday night and, more importantly, the door to a potential seventh straight national title has swung back open for the SEC.

Simplifying this from Georgia’s viewpoint: If the Dogs win their next two games over Georgia Tech next week and Alabama in the SEC championship game, they likely will wind up in their first BCS championship game. Entering the week, Alabama ranked fourth in the BCS and Georgia was fifth.

ESPN’s Brad Edwards projects that the top five in the new BCS rankings will be: 1)  Notre Dame; 2.) Alabama; 3.) Georgia, 4.) Florida, 5.) Oregon

After Stanford’s win in overtime, several Georgia players celebrated on Twitter, with Murray sending out the message: “Yesssssssssssss!!!!!! The Murray household just went crazyyyyy!!!!!!”

Richt has tried his best to steer the talk away from the BCS. Most of the first half of the Georgia Southern game showed us why. As Richt said of the first half, “We were fortunate to come out of there even with the lead.”

No kidding. With Georgia leading 10-7, a personal foul/chop block penalty by an Eagles’ lineman negated a first-and-goal situation from the Dogs’ five-yard-line. That set up a 39-yard field goal attempt that Georgia Southern missed. It set the backdrop for a touchdown drive going in the

Mark Richt wants players to focus on game, but BCS standings on scoreboard.

other direction. Instead of facing a potent halftime deficit of 14-10, Georgia led 17-7.

“I feel like that swung the mood in the stadium and on the sideline,” wide receiver Tavarres King said.

From that point on, it was Aaron Murray-to-anybody. He threw touchdown passes on four straight possessions.

Should Georgia have let an FCS opponent hang around that long? No.

But in the end, poll voters and BCS computers will see the lopsided final score. This certainly isn’t the first time the Dogs have played to the level of their competition. But the objectives Saturday were to win and use the Eagles’ option offense as a scout team for next week’s game against Georgia Tech. In that sense, mission accomplished.

“I don’t know how the BCS does things,” nose guard John Jenkins said. “But if that (45-14) looks good on style points, hey, we’re styling.”

There was no stylin’ early. After an opening touchdown drive, Georgia scored three points on the next possessions (fumbling once) against a Georgia Southern defense that had given up 88 points to your basic non-BCS outfits: UT-Chattanooga, Appalachian State and Howard.

Pick your cliche:

“We were shooting ourselves in the foot,” Murray said.

“Self-inflicted wounds,” offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said.

Georgia defensive linemen were getting upset by what they perceived as Georgia Southern’s intentional chop blocking. They were penalized only once, knocking down Georgia’s Kwame Geathers, but Jenkins said, “I felt like I was sliced and diced that game.”

But both the defense endured and Murray began shredding the Eagles’ secondary.

Actually, Murray has torn everybody apart lately. Since the fourth quarter of the Florida game, he has completed 62 of 88 for 1,005 yards, 12 touchdowns and zero interceptions. “Is he eating Wheaties or something?” King said.

The Dogs continued attacking to the final minutes, even after putting in the second-string defense. The last touchdown pass came by Parker Welch with 3:13 left. The thought occurred that they were trying to impress voters and computers. But Richt and Bobo both denied that.

“We had three runs called but they kept bringing both safeties on blitzes,” Bobo said. “On third down I was like, ‘OK, we’ve got to throw it. We have to protect our backs, too.’”

Richt never has been a pour-it-on coach. If anything, he has been accused of being just the opposite. So nobody is going to complain. And by next week people will only remember the score.

Could be the following scenario:
1) ND loses to USC
2) UGA loses to GA Tech
3) UGA beats Bama
4) Oregon loses to Oregon State
5) Kansas loses to Texas
6) UF loses to FSU

It’s a whole different ball game when the bulls-eye is on your back.

3. UGA
4. Fla

7. A&M
8. SC

UGA matches up well with Bama. Bama has no dominant pass rusher and UGA is excellent passing the ball. Bama has a suspect secondary as well. It could go either way but its a good match up for UGA. South Carolina was a bad match up for UGA because of their killer d line. Also, the defense was a mess because they weren’t very cohesive at the time due to some suspended players being reintegrated. I think if UGA does win out everyone needs to thank Shawn Williams. Ever since he called out the defense it has looked light years better.

Wow.

In-state rival Tennessee had won 34 of the past 35 games in this series coming into this game. The Commodores (7-4, 5-3 Southeastern Conference) also snapped a 14-game skid against Tennessee at home with their first win in Nashville since 1982 and the most points they’ve scored against the Vols since a 51-7 win in 1923.

Vanderbilt also had its biggest margin of victory over Tennessee since a 26-0 win in 1954 in a game the Commodores were held to a pair of field goals by Carey Spear after having first-and-goal at the Volunteers’ 5 and closer. The Commodores also won five SEC games for the first time since 1935.

The Vols (4-7, 0-7) haven’t had three straight losing seasons since 1909-11. They also will miss out on a bowl game in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1976-1978.

Not So Fast,

Match up had nothing to do with GA losing by 28. I said a hundred years ago that the West Virginia game would define Richt. Remember 28-0 before GA scored. He does not the team ready to play from the get go. That and they are idiot thugs.

Joke do you have any football knowledge at all? Football is all about match ups. What one team does against another has no bearing on what they will do against a different team. That’s why I called the Stanford, Oregon game for Stanford last week. It was a bad match up for Oregon. Stanford had the #1 defense against the rush. And oh look they shut down Oregon. Match ups are what football is all about. Do you even watch games or do you just look up stats?

Not so,

Please show me some more blogs where I can check your great prognostication skills. Your picking GA right. Have you watched GA bearly beat a horrible TN team, a horrible KY team, get trounced against a mediocre SC team, beat a joke of a FL team by 7.

Like I said, you’re an idiot. History repeats itself. Have you watched GA play the last 10 top 10 teams. Matchup didn’t mean squat because Richt is a joke.

You don’t win because despite your crying and what you or I say the game isn’t played on a blog. I never said UGA was going to win. All I said is the game is going to be close. And margin doesn’t even matter in this case because no matter what happened earlier in the season the equation is simple…if Bama or UGA win out, whoever does plays for the title.

Never has this happened. Only 168 hours in an entire season including the NC game, has Bama not been the favorite to win the NC. 168 hours.

Ranked number 1 all year, 1 week off, AL vs ND. yeah right. ND, what 2 or 3 overtimes to beat Pitt. Palease.

14*168 = 2352 – 168 = 2184 hours Bama odds on favorite. wow 92% of the regular season. As we say in T town. ROLL TIDE!

It doesn’t matter now you just showed your football knowledge. The only thing that matters for them now is win out. Because they actually play #2. So if they don’t lose anymore, they will pass number two. So even if they were 2 and Bama 3….they would still have to beat Bama..,wow are you really that slow that you can’t understand that. So that loss to USC is irrelevant now just as Bama’s to A&m is.

I’ve been saying since we beat Florida, when Aaron Murray put this team on his back, tried to hand-off to Todd Gurley for the winning drive 4th quarter game in the balance, and willed this team into the end zone on the considerable strength of his arm throwing the TD pass to Malcolm Mitchell with the key downfield block by Artie Lynch to spring him into the end zone, that the winner of The SEC Championship Game would represent 6 of the top 9 in the BCS Rankings SEC teams against Notre Dame and that Notre Dame has no Aaron Murray. I want Notre Dame.

I’ve been saying that we should throw the football to Chris Conley since the 1st game of the season, and that Malcolm Mitchell and he are our 2 best receivers. I really like Michael Bennett, and we get him back, too, 2013. The offense returns 2013. The Defense is showing some signs that we will have some defenders 2013, as well.

I’ve been pointing out that our win over Florida was the best win of any of the top-ranked BCS teams, and that the winner of The SEC Championship would have wins over # 6 today Florida maybe # 5 now maybe even # 4, and # 4 today Alabama most likely # 2 now Alabama. I’d been saying that Alabama would lose and did to Texas A and M, and that no matter what the winner of The SEC Championship would represent The SEC in The SEC’s finest hour ever 2012, and would either have these 2 great wins by us, or if Alabama wins would have their win over # 7 today LSU maybe moving up to # 6 now and over # 4 Georgia # 5 today but would move up to # 4 because I guaranteed Kansas State loses.

That there would be (1) The SEC in 1-slot and (2) Notre Dame playing in the BCS 2-team 2012 NC Title Game.

I’ve taken on all comers on the point for the last month on each and every blog. Pre-season, I figured we’d beat Florida, but I never figured they would beat all 3 teams they’ve beat this season today # 7 LSU # 8 Texas A and M and # 9 South Carolina. No one did. Even Florida fans themselves in here figured Florida was too weak on offense, but had a stifling defense, to do well. Certainly the game against Texas A and M was a great barometer of how well Florida would do 2012. Johnny Football had not played, since he was redshirted as a freshman after scholarship offers from Oregon and Stanford, but once he did, he emerged as the player 2012. There was talk of a player on Kansas State, but he had not beat anyone.

There was talk of Aaron Murray, but he too had beat no one. But, he fixed all that on a day # 4 Florida was wholly unable to score a single TD against us, taking the 1st drive for us in for the TD and just single-handedly willing us to the win, game in the balance, to put # 4 Florida away.

There was talk of Jarvis Jones, but his injuries held him back some : Not so, Aaron Murray. I thought Aaron Murray had banged his throwing shoulder trying to heave the ball deflected at the line on a jailhouse blitz on 3rd down, up at the time 38-7. From my vantage point, it looked like the tough quarterback for UGA was grimacing in pain. Maybe what I saw was the competitor he was grimacing up 38-7 that he failed on the deflected pass attempt ? I hope so.

10-14 then 10-10 I thought it would be. Then, just as against Florida, in less than 60 ticks, Aaron Murray had done it once again with the most touchdowns ever in an UGA season – although in fairness when comparing anything to the past, you just have to point out we have 14-game seasons nowadays compared to the 10 or 11 game seasons of the past. Instead, it was 17-7, and the game was over the New York nanosecond that Kwame Geathers was engaged in a block at the line high, when the Georgia Southern University’s left offensive tackle just on the snap lunged directly for big Kwame Geathers’ legs, and in the scary moment, leg-whipped Kwame Geathers’ with the left offensive tackles entire body and to the turf in a dangerous moment, Kwame Geathers crumpled to the sacred ground the flag upon him.

Herein lies why with but 64 scholarship recruits remaining plus 1 transfer-in, why we should never play Georgie tek in football. Their fight song says : “To Hell with Georgia” and therefore anything goes, smash our fans’ faces, play Most Wanted Felon Criminal Reuben Houston against us the whole entire game and still lose. They do not care. Do anything that will ruin us, on NCAA Probation, the CHEATERS are again 2012 in FOOTBALL.

We need to be in tack 1 week after Saturday at 4pm at the Georgia Dome. We’ve made our plans. National Stage, the whole world watching as # 3 Georgia takes on # 2 Alabama when we’ve played Alabama 63 times losing to them but 36 with 38 of the game oddly at home for Alabama while in the 25 home games for us Alabama has been able to beat us but 14 times, and make no mistake about it, the Georgia Dome has always been home games for me watching us here too every time.

Why even play Georgie tek ? Nothing to gain and everything to lose. Georgie tek cannot recruit. They act as if they have recruited the smartest football players the world-over, then we see they cannot count to 4, while none of them ever graduate. Oh, and that Georgie tek is the # 36 best university. We’re # 36 ! We’re # 36 like they are # 1 Harvard, you know ?

Georgia Southern University is a fine football team who played Alabama better than they played us, and whom I said would lose to us 32-17 or so. I didn’t count on Parker Welsh to actually do something and score a TD on a fabulous juggling act of a pass thrown into the back of the defender, which Justin Scott-Wesley just out-jumped his man and snatched the pass securing it as he hit the grass.

We might both play for the national championship, them with 6 NC and us with 6 NC – both put up our 7th NC 2012. That would leave Georgie tek in the dust, who has 6 NC in the very same polls who have ranked us # 1 six times to-date going into this season.

“(Fumbling Once)” Yeah, Jeff Schultz that was that fumble, right ? Walk-on 5′ 10″ Rhett McGowan’s fumble is what put us in the situation of staring at a 10-14 or 10-10 funk to contemplate all half-time. Then, later in the game, as if on cue, Rhett McGowan back there fielding punts as a walk-on in our Punt Safe BS never gaining a yard while all these other teams, return 89-yard punt returns and even return missed field goals against us for 70 yards, fumbled again.

Why don’t we put a top guy back there fielding punts ? Oh, you want to argue about Malcolm Mitchell jerked around position to position all season ? What about Chris Conley, since he is going to be in the NFL soon as a receiver ? Because we have no one to evaluate and our coach likes to play walk-ons so he can say what a great story them as walk-ons you know ?

Our Special Teams’ suck.

The only thing that I remember is that I told you the winner of The SEC Championship Game would represent the 6 of the top 9 BCS-ranked SEC teams in the NC Title Game, no matter what. Now, instead of arguing that, you can what ? Act like we didn’t play Georgia Southern University better than Alabama ? Trust me, Alabama knows the Notre Dame game is easy too, easier than Georgia Southern University; and that of all teams, Alabama wants to face us less than any ever. We’ve got it going on, while Alabama has all these freshmen at key positions, and has no Todd Gurley 1000-yard rusher, has no Aaron Murray most Touchdowns scored of any SEC quarterback ever soon, has no Alec Ogletree who will excel at the next level, and who has no Jarvis Jones our most celebrated linebacker in our 120-year storied Top 10 Football Program in Wins All-Time.

Hahaha stupid Georgia fans actually think they stand a chance against Alabama. Remember LSU last season? Yeah, Alabama is much better than the LSU team that made Georgia look like a high school team last year. It’s going to be hilarious when GT runs all over UGA. Dumbasses, aside from last year, Georgia has barely squeezed by tech or even lost to them over the last four years. Stupid ignorant Georgia fans… Quit bitching because you’re jealous that tech grads actually have money and real jobs to occupy their time, rather than idolizing college football players who are far overrated anyway. National champs…. Hahaha that’s a joke. And shutting out one of the best offenses in the country? Yeahhhh right. Vad Lee is going to destroy Georgia shaky and extremely inconsistent defense. I think lattimore single-handedly showed that Georgia can’t defend the run for anything. Gah thank God for Georgia fans. Their undeserved arrogance always gives tech fans a good laugh, especially since they’re far more intelligent and realize life isn’t all about football. Look at the stats you trash, Georgia doesn’t beat good teams, and hasnt had a dominant game against tech in years.

And wow, ThomasBrown, you’re the epitome of dumbass Georgia fan. TECH is actually the 7th best university in the country overall, 3rd for engineering. Now where exactly does Georgia fall in that list? In the 40’s or 50’s I believe… haha it’s a joke that you compare the two schools at all, and then try to act as if football is the deciding factor in whether and institution is worthy of being associated with or not… What a redneck thing to imply. I think tech grads are perfectly fine having an average football team in exchange for the substantial amount of difference in their payroll compared to uga grads and fans(most of which have absolutely nothing to do with the actual school). So yeah, keep bragging about your football team to your boss, who is likely a Tech grad,, but he’s still the one making it somewhere in life because he cared more about actual life than football.

As long as a the opposing team is still trying to block, tackle, and score, there is no such thing as running up the score. GSU was still trying to run it with less than a minute to go rather than just take a knee. Guys can get hurt for nothing. Cut blocking should be illegal the same as helmet to helmet. Blowing out a guy’s knee with the cut blocks is the cowardly way to try and win. Bring on Tech and Bama.

the thing is you can’t lose to a team 35-7 and be contenders for the bcs. it will be ND, Bama, Oregon and UGA in top 5. If uga beats bands they’ll still rank oregon second, even if Oregon is left out of the pac12cg. its ND vs Bama/Oregon but SEC fatigue, a very weak schedule and a 35 point beating keeping us out.

different story if we’d even tried to play south Carolina. Kirk even mentioned doing the south Carolina game and how we didn’t show up.

Use your real handle. What are you ashamed of it ? Our Defense is quite consistently a Top 25 Total Defense in the NCAA, while your Defense is # 68 in the nation. We’ve beat as our best win the # 4 Florida team who beat # 7 LSU # 8 Texas and M and # 9 South Carolina.

Georgie tek, # 36 university, on NCAA Probation back-to-back in Football 2012, is 6-5 and might win the ACC CHUMPionship and has what as your best win ?

5-6 Virginia Tech ? No. You LOST to them.

6-5 Miami of Florida ? No. You LOST to them, too.

6-5 Brigham Young college when you ran in here to the UGA blogs pre-game to brag Georgie tek had not lost to a religious-based college in how long was it ? No. You LOST to them, as well.

Middle Tennessee college ? No You LOST to them, then the next week they LOST to Louisiana – Monroe.

You have LOST to lousy football team after lousy football team, and yet might win the ACC CHUMPionship. Gag on your 1-10 record against Mark Richt who has just put up his 8th 10-Win Season in his 12-year era here beating your fannies like a Dungeons’ and Dragons’ drum.

Vad Lee. What an utter joke of a quarterback with only 3 touchdown passes all entire season long and is so great, he lost his entire freshman season, not even getting to play 1 snap, after being ranked the # 47 qb in the nation as a recruit. Be realistic. He’s a fine young man who did not have much to choose from on scholarship offers to college, and who sold his soul to the devil going to that high-school offense best-suited to FCS than to FBS.

You’ve LOST 7 bowl games in a row and have not won a Major Bowl Game starting 1957, fifty-five years of futility for Georgie tek.

If you root for your team to play in the ACC CHUMPionship Game, your season will end 6-7; does that keep you from even playing in a bowl game with all your horrible losses after losses after losses after losses 2012 on NCAA Probation in Football as the # 36 university.

I am not certain if you can play in a bowl game with a 6-7 loss, and if you did, it would be 6-8 then anyway.

ACC CHUMPionship Game 6-5 Georgie tek with 4 horrid losses

Yeah, you’re a Georgie tek nerd.

I think UGA should end up # 1 today in some poll – like the USA Today Coaches’ Poll, for example.

Thomas Brown

So every team in every conference has lost a game.

That was a long time ago.

It is not like we quit playing. I recall specifically that Aaron Murray drove us for the TD with 1:55 left against the # 9 BCS-ranked South Carolina when they had Marcus Lattimore that day, and it was a Home Game for South Carolina.

The salient point is that we were already # 4 in the Coaches’ Poll before the shake-up Saturday. We got jobbed in 2002 ending # 3 in every poll yet having to play a # 23 ranked 5-Loss Flawed State in the “bcs bowl” and we got jobbed in 2007 ending up # 2 in every poll yet having to play # 19 ranked Hawaii in the “bcs bowl” match-up.

My focus is and has been on our fine record against Alabama All-Time and that AJ McCarron is NO Aaron Murray, nor do they have a win as good as our win over # 5 Florida now. They also have key positions held down by Freshmen 2012. And, they have no Todd Gurley either, or Alec Ogletree, nor Jarvis Jones.

I am not guaranteeing a win over Alabama, but after what Aaron Murray did scoring those 2 TD drives to start and end the game over Florida while Florida scored none against this got it going on football team 2012 our best chance I have always said about this 2012 season, I like our chances.

I have liked our chances for THAT and the NC Game since the 4th quarter game in the balance drive by Aaron Murray. Look at our Defense. Our Defense is the # 20 Total Defense and # 18 Scoring Defense.

Our Offense is also Top 25 in Total Offense and in Scoring Offense.

We need to do something about our Punt Returns and Special Teams for Heavens’ sake.

We have 2 weeks since a team made up of # 52 recruiting rankings every year of Paul Johnson, loses to us 50-9.

Georgie tek would lose to Georgia Southern University obviously.

I know we can play with Alabama, and I am certain they prefer to play anyone but us now.

Alabama and Georgia know the Notre Dame game is an easy win for either of us, with no Aaron Murray.

all the uga haters can eat crap. if we beat ga tech and bama, we are in the bcs national championship game. simple as that. 2 wins over the #2 ranked florida and #2 ranked bama will be enough to launch us into the bcs title game down in miami. a loss on the road to a very good south carolina team a long time ago will not keep us out of the bcs title game. facts are facts. uga got screwed in 2002 and 2007. this is our year. GO DAWGS AND TO HELL WITH GA TECH!!!

CBS Announcer Tim Brando said in the Ole Miss LSU game that The SEC needed LSU to win last night to make our Conference stronger for the jump in the polls. He posed it as a question : Doesn’t The SEC need LSU to win this game, so their SEC Championship Game Winner plays in the NC Title Game ?

ESPN addressed all us in The South (not the Deep South 5-5 Virginia Tech fan) Yes, I am talking to you down there in The SEC, your team who wins The SEC Championship Game plays in the NC Title Game.

The facts are nothing matters now but us beating Alabama. Georgie tek is 50-9.

After Aaron Murray led us on that 4th quarter drive against # 4 Florida, I said that all that matters is that we beat Alabama. Now that all of that has come to fruition on shake-up Saturday, you cannot now come in here and say # 3 Georgia doesn’t play for the NC Title Game vs # 2 Alabama if we win.

hairy dawg, the loss is forgotten – since every conference has at least 1 loss now.

It does NOT matter one iota.

“Barring either a colossal upset in next week’s Iron Bowl against 3-8 Auburn or 6-5 Georgia Tech knocking off 10-1 Georgia, the Dec. 1 SEC championship game will, for the third time in five years, serve as a play-in game to the BCS title game.”

Coaches’ Poll last week :

# 1 Oregon LOST
# 2 Kansas State LOST as I guaranteed
# 3 Notre Dame, still has not played anyone any good
# 4 Georgia

So, we’re # 2 in the Coaches’ Poll today, and buckeye runs in here to say without giving you the URL Link I had to reply with to him that SI Stewart Mandel Sports Illustrated says this morning all this stuff about the BCS Title Game Match-Up after Shake-up Saturday, and not one word, nothing, nada about The Georgia Bulldogs’ Top 10 All-Time Football Program in Wins who has beat Ohio State every time we’ve played them, on NCAA Probation as Ohio State is. Beat the # 4 Florida team this day in the polls, who themselves beat # 7 LSU, # 8 Texas A and M and # 9 South Carolina, and faces off in the play-in game against Alabama when UGA also has the best record of all opponents ever against Alabama.

Just because you cannot focus on reading something you summarize to us like we’re unable to read it ourselves long before you woke up this morning and finally read it, does not mean the rest of us cannot reply ON TOPIC DIRECTLY to your BS that UGA is not in the picture.

We damn sure are as Jeff Schultz said last night at midnight when he re-wrote this blog post – a follow-up of several earlier posts by Jeff Schultz previously, also pointing out we can play for the BCS National Championship Title Game if we can beat Alabama, who wants to face this got it going on Dawgs’ Team the least of all teams, ever in Alabama’s entire history of college football.
