Predictions: Jackets, Dogs, Falcons and lust triangles

In a bizarre turn of affairs — which should not be confused with anything that might be going on in a broom closet at the Pentagon with a CIA director, his smokin’ but psychotic biographer, a general (not that general, the other general), a Florida socialite, Snooki, Ashley Dupre, Donna Rice, Camila Parker (Duchess of Cornwall), Kim Kardashian (Duchess of … never mind), the UnReal Housewives With UnReal Enhancements of Atlanta, Anne Boleyn, King Charles VII, Bacchus (Greek god of Debauchery), probably a few Kennedys, Marilyn (duh), Fabio, the Thomas Crown Affair, An Affair to Remember, Family Affair (never trusted Mr. French) Glenn Close and that poor bunny rabbit, and, sorry, there’s just no room in here for Tiger Woods — Georgia Tech may play in a BCS game.

Just planning the weddings. (Art work via says-it.com/churchsigns.)

I'm just a hopeless romantic. (Art work via says-it.com)

(If you need to take a breath, re-read, digest, grab a snack, that’s OK. I’ll wait here. Still waiting. OK…)

Back to Georgia Tech-Duke, which isn’t nearly as interesting as David Petraeus-Paula Broadwell and the world of Harlequin: The Jackets have blown leads, fired a defensive coordinator and lost to Middle Tennessee State this season. But if they beat Duke, they’ll finish 5-3 in the ACC, probably tie for first with Miami in their division and possibly go to the conference title game amid rumors that the Hurricanes are considering self-penalizing themselves to limit how big of a mallet the NCAA whacks them with.

It’s kind of one of those I’ll-believe-it-when-I-see-it things. But would you have believed a trashy spy novel coming to life?

For now, we’ll keep this simple: Tech wins and covers 13.

Final week update for Tech-UGA, bowl tickets!

FABER COLLEGE

(Where Knowledge is Good)

Stare at this for six hours. I dare you.

Stare at this for six hours. I dare you. (via Footballislifeblog)

Ga. Southern at Georgia: If Sid Gillman wasn’t dead, these next two games against Georgia Southern and Tech would kill him. Over/under on opponent forward passes is 6½. Over/under on Todd Grantham meltdowns for mistackles vs. the triple option: 103. Nonetheless: Let’s say Bulldogs by 21-plus.

Old Ms. at LSU: Les Miles said this week: “We still have a chance, an outside chance, of being the representative of the Western Division in the SEC title game.” He failed to mention there’s an equal chance of a meteor falling on his head, which, by the way, could happen if LSU loses to Ole Miss. Tigers cover 18½.

Arkansas at Mississippi State: John L. Smith said he is “optimistic” about his chances to keep the Arkansas coaching job. He’s 4-6, in bankruptcy and lost to Louisiana-Monroe. Dude, your next job is handing out happy face stickers at Walmart. Other Dogs cover 6½.

Trying to break the news to John L. Smith

Headache at B.C. (Powder): The Hokies also are 2-4 in the ACC, and the only wins have come over Tech (via a frantic late-game rally and turnover in overtime) and Duke. But on the stinkage scale, Boston College still rules. VaTech covers 10.

Tennessee at Vanderbilt: Derek Dooley made it through the week. Pay all bets. Last year Dooley stood up in the locker room after a win over Vanderbilt and declared: “The last thing that I’m going to remind you before we sing is that the one thing Tennessee always does is kick the [expletive] out of Vandy.” Think that might have come up in Nashville? Vandy covers 4.

UGA fans singing a new tune, post-South Carolina (love Keith Moon’s shirt)

PROS AND EX-CONS

Mike Tomlin's remedy for injuries.

Mike Tomlin's remedy for injuries.

Cardinals at Falcons: Not sure if the Falcons are going to be able to solve their running problems against Arizona, a pretty good defensive team. But the Cardinals’ offense looks like Larry Fitzgerald and 10 guys holding Swiss Army knives, except, you know, with the phillips screwdriver open. Don’t now how the Falcons are going to fill the hole left by Ray Edwards. Oh, wait — here’s an old piece of gum. Falcons cover 10.

Ravens at Steelers: Addressing Ben Roethlisberger injuries, Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said, “Excuses are tools of the incompetent.” Literary note: It’s from a poem that actually dates back to the Farmer’s Almanac. On a related note, can any farmer play quarterback? Ravens win but take Steelers and 3½.

Jets at Rams: A bunch of New York Jets ripped Tim Tebow anonymously in a New York Daily News story, because that’s what spineless cowards do in a locker room. I’m starting to think the Jets’ problem is everybody BUT Tim Tebow. Rams cover 3½.

Bears at 49ers: “Bears vs. 49ers!” makes a much better network promo than “Jay Cutler vs. Alex Smith!” Smith has a concussion. Question: Which team benefits? Feeling frisky: Take the 5 — and the Bears in a straight upset.

Packers at Lions: Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson are like “Andy” and “Red” in Shawshank Redemption — too good guys who’ve been dropped into a prison yard. Speaking of felons: The last time these teams met, Ndamukong Suh stomped on the arm of a Green Bay lineman, confirming his head is two tacos short of a combination plate. Time to collect rocks: Packers cover 3½

Stafford and C.J. should escape to Zihuatanejo

TIME TO SETTLE UP

pokerdogsLast week: 5-6 straight up, 6-5 against the line.

So far, so awesome: 91-32 straight up, 72-50-1 against the line.

“Sack Schultz” update: The grand “local” prize of UGA-Tech tickets, Chick-fil-A Bowl tickets and one night at the Athens Hotel Indigo will be decided this week. There are 51 contestants within four picks of each other. The Hawaii trip will be decided after the conference championship games in three weeks.

Lilly Pick of the Week: Lilly wasn’t real big on picking between birds (it’s counter-intuitive for a retriever) but she finally made her cookie choice: Falcons over Cardinals.

If the Jackets win the ACC East, that will be quite an accomplishment considering how bad they have been in some of their games.

Jeff…agree UGA will beat GSU by 20 or so, but I’m wagering GSU puts up at least 20 pts on the Dawgs and runs for over 300 yds—why? That’s what they did to Alabama in 2011 and had Nick Satan shaking his forked tail and lamenting how much he hated playing teams that run that option offense. GSU will give UGA a better game than Tech I’ll bet. And UGA had better remember the year Appalachian State upset Michigan in the Big House.

That’s a Falcon ? Lilly was just confused for a sweet doggie.

Let’s look at this misconception that Scout.com does a poor job of recruiting analysis and would do better just flipping a coin.

“Tons of mid-majors and lower….those guys seemed to have been overlooked.” No, not really; and, those who are are highly rated recruits by Scout.com and Rivals and choose to go to those schools with offers for scholarships from top schools. Here is my research on that misconception this morning over my coffee for 2012 NFL Draft :

There are 13 FCS Division 1 conferences plus 3 independents. They can have no more than 85 scholarship recruits at any one time, but are limited to no more than 63 full scholarships per school which the school may or may not split-up among multiple players.

3 drafted Big Sky: Division 1 FCS

3 drafted Big South: Division 1 FCS

3 drafted Southern Conference Division 1 FCS

3 drafted SWAC : Division 1 FCS

Brian Quick Appalachian State was 4-Star # 11 wide receiver in nation.

Amini Silatolu was 2-star Offensive Guard San Joaquin Delta junior college.

Trumaine Johnson 3-star # 22 Defensive End in nation Montana

Akiem Hicks 4-star Defensive Tackle LSU vols Kansas State Washington State Oregon among 7 who offered scholarship FBS played football at University of Regina in Canada.

Christian Thompson MEAC South Carolina State, 3-star # 22 Safety in nation offered scholarship by Auburn, LSU Mississippi State among 6 scholarship offers FBS

Matt Johnson Big Sky Eastern Washington 3-Star # 56 QB in nation offered scholarships by 7 FBS schools

Josh Norman 3-Star # 11 Cornerback in nation, Coastal Carolina Big South FCS

Chris Greenwood Albion College Division III # 33 cornerback in nation 3-star

Asa Jackson Big Sky Conference Cal Poly 2-star cornerback, kick returner

Jeremy Lane 3-star # 37 cornerback Northwestern State Southland Conference FCS Division 1

Justin Bethel 2-star Safety Presbyterian College Big South Conference FCS Division 1

Tom Compton Great West Conference # 15 Offensive Tackle in Nation South Dakota

B. J. Coleman 4-star # 16 Quarterback in nation, given scholarship by Tennessee vols football, signed with the vols, went to college then later at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Mocs Division 1 FCS Southern Conference.

Daryl Richardson Cisco Junior College Abilene Christian college running back out of Jacksonville Florida who did not have the grades. Lone Star Division II.

Jason Slowey offered scholarships by 4 FBS including Boise State and Oregon State as Offensive Tackle, cut by San Francisco

Jeris Pendleton didn’t attend college until age 24 housekeeping job at a nursing home following high school for two and a half years before doing construction work for a year and a half to support his family a real Vince Papale story. Then, Jeris went to Joliet Junior College and finished his college at Ashland Division II.

As for “63 percent of 5-stars don’t get drafted,” the total is 100,000 high school recruits. I know it is popular to discuss 5-star recruits, but I thought I had put that to rest that it is where you are ranked nationally, not how many stars that is important ? I tried. If you have 100,000 high school recruits and you flip a coin, that is 50,000 each year going to NFL. That’s a coin toss. See ? Assuming coin tosses are 50 % which I don’t know. There are less than 2,000 in NFL total. Not 50,000 a year going to NFL. See that, too ? That’s not a coin toss. Now, is it ? I just want to be real about the services and give you specific data to refute your opinion in the hopes you would study the data and see that perhaps you are way too harsh on the Scout.com and Rivals recruiting services ? What do you think ? Maybe ?

As for the misconception that the “Big 6 Conferences the BCS Conferences do not account for 75 percent of the NFL Draft, and Football Bowl Subdivision teams do not make up 95 percent of the NFL Draft.” Uh, yeah they bloody well do too : There are 11 FBS Division 1 full bowl conferences plus 4 independents. FBS are limited to 85 scholarship recruits, and no scholarship may be split-up among recruits in football.

31 drafted ACC: FBS

26 drafted Big 12: FBS

12 drafted Big East: FBS

41 drafted Big Ten: FBS

10 drafted Conference USA: FBS

8 drafted MAC: FBS

12 drafted Mountain West: FBS

28 drafted Pac-12: FBS

43 drafted SEC: FBS

6 drafted Sun Belt: FBS

11 drafted WAC: FBS

4 drafted Independents: FBS

Each of these 11 FBS conference plus 4 independents 85-man scholarship limit

232 drafted for 95 percent of draft by FBS schools limited to 85 scholarships

___________________________________________
This is Mark Richt’s main STRENGTH : RECRUITING
___________________________________________

He also beat # 2 Florida with wins themselves over # 7 LSU, # 8 Texas A&M, & # 9 USCe.

As for Georgie tek, who bloody-well cares ?

42 for 17 percent of all NFL draft are SEC players alone.
180 for 75 percent of all NFL draft are Big 6 BCS Conference players.
232 for 95 percent of all NFL draft are Football Bowl Subdivision players.

So you know, Tressel was motivated to keep money in state -thus the Ohio schools were routinely scheduled early and the payouts stayed in Ohio for the most part as well as giving the kids the opportunity to play in Ohio Stadium.

Marshall, Crowell, King, Ealey and Mettenberger are long gone. The crop that are left are very high character (a few spliffs and brownies notwithstanding and, really, if you think someone is a “thug” or a “cancer” because they get high now and again, you must have been a real blast in college).

Excuse me I named the teams Ohio State plays NOW, not some team you’re going to LOSE to in the future. Yes, when the ONLY Big 10 (12 ? 14 ? 11?) ranked team jumped from the Big XII, is Nebraska, you need to talk about out-of-conference games ONLY for the Big 10. In the SEC we have 6 of the top 9 teams and all you have is # 14, and they jumped out of the Big XII to come beat up on you guys who only can beat Akron Zits. Did I say that right ? Zits. That is Akron ? What was your score against Alabama college at Birmingham last month ? 29-15 ? Wake me up when there is a real Big 10 team actually ranked. After Nebraska competes to get to recruit players to play football on frozen tundra, they will recruit the same players the Big 10 recruits. Which is no one. Conference Rankings Scout.com 2011 signing class worse than The SEC, worse than Big XII, worse than the PAC-12, worse than the ACC even, then in 5th place for conferences is the mighty we can never beat an SEC team in a bowl game Ohio State and the Big 10, I mean wow guy. This season 2012 rankings are exactly the same.

Yeah, well, I have seen you around for a long-time too. It’s called research. I research common misconceptions, and provide the actual about collegiate football. It’s my hobby for over like 40 years now. Maybe longer. Maybe a lot longer. I try to give people the references. I used to put 4 or 5 like footnotes as I posted, but now I can only get 1 in per post. Not sure what that’s all about. Good to hear from you. Recruiting really is Mark Richt’s forté. It is why I supported his extension this time last year, and the 1st to post to give him the extension then. We should reel in a class of 33 this season, so we have a lot of blue-chippers yet to come : OL, WR, Secondary, FB, TE – we have lots of needs. Who is this guy I never heard of DUI Matt Stagg ?
