Short takes: Murray, defense and angry Auburn fans

If you missed it, here’s a link to my column on Georgia’s SEC East-clinching win over Auburn Saturday night.

And here are my three “short takes” on the game.

Former Georgia and Falcons defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder didn't even look happy before the game. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

Former Georgia and Falcons defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder didn't even look happy before the game. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

1. Aaron Murray is just fine: Murray took a beating from some Georgia fans after horrible games against South Carolina and Florida but he has rebounded nicely. He completed his first 10 passes against Auburn (two for touchdowns) and threw for three scores and 208 yards in three quarters before being lifted. In the last nine quarters, going back to the fourth quarter of the Florida game, Murray is 44 for 60 for 675 yards, eight touchdowns and zero interceptions. Offensive coordinator Mime Bobo said Murray had been too “cautious,” adding: “I said, ‘Son, you know what’s going on. You’re one of the best quarterbacks in  the country. Cut it loose. If you make a turnover being aggressive, that’s OK.’”

Jarvis Jones levels Auburn quarterback Jonathan Wallace. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

2. Defense gives Georgia a chance against Alabama. Auburn is one of the weakest offensive teams around, but there’s little question Georgia’s defense is finally playing up to the level that was expected before the season. The Bulldogs have allowed just one touchdown (along with four field goals) in the last three games. The missed tackles and missed assignments, partly the result of injuries and early season suspensions, aren’t an issue right now. Add to that the Alabama offense has not been overpowering in the last two games against LSU and Texas A&M. If Georgia’s defense can play at the same level against Alabama in the SEC title game as it has against Florida, Ole Miss and Auburn, it has a very good chance to pull an upset.

3. Auburn fans are so done with this season. In 23 years of living in Atlanta, I’ve never seen a home crowd for a major college football team — let alone a team that won a national championship just two years ago — bolt from a game so quickly. Jordan-Hare Stadium was full for kickoff, certainly a positive for a winless SEC team. But boos started to rain down in the second quarter when Georgia built its lead to 21-0, then 28-0. When Keith Marshall ran 62 yards for a score to make it 38-0 in the third quiarter, it was like somebody yelled, “Fire,” in the stadium and thousands of fans streamed out. Georgia had more fans in the stadium than Auburn in the fourth quarter. That might be the worst sign of all for coach Gene Chizik.

$hitzik became one of my most disliked coaches of all time based on his childish and unprofessional antics and lack of character he showed in Auburn against UGA two years ago. Maybe he can room with Kiffin and Petrino!

The truth is a championship team does not have a 28 point loss on their resume. We’re number 4 now. That’s number 4 in the SEC West behind Alabama, LSU and Texas A&M. Than you Jesus for this schedule. McGarity rocks…..Go Dwags

I was in Auburn when they hosed us in ‘86. Zero sympathy for Chizik or Allbarn fans. The liars and cheaters finally get some measure of justice over there. Now, with all that has happened this season, what sort of chicanery will the bungholios on the plains pull now?

Georgia’s defense has given up 7 points total in the past two meetings vs. Auburn. Great defense. Also in the past 3 games they’ve only surrendered 19 points as a defense. Outstanding.

Come on, Murray is only adequate. He has a super deep group of skilled players that my grandma could throw to, all his audibles are called from sidelines, and he has still only beat 1 top 20 team in his career. We saw how good that 1 team, Florida, was yesterday when the Ragin Cajuns took them to the wire. I’ll take Manziel or Mariota anyday.

As for you Trevinb, your team better be STATIC and come to win every week against all comers if you want a NC in the modern BCS era. It helps to run up the score too.

CGC needs to grow up! And if I were part of the AU decision making process, I would clearly spell that out to him. But I would keep him around for another year with the following ultimatum: NO MORE JC PHENOMS ARE COMING OUR WAY SO DEVELOP SOME FOOTBALL PLAYERS; STOP DEVELOPING THE PLAYERS WHO GO TO THE NEXT LEVEL AND DISPLAY POOR CHARACTER (NEWTON, FARLEY): WIN 7 REGULARV SEASON GAMESIN 2013 OR ELSE….

Does anyone still question whether Auburn sold its sole to the devil for the 2010 season and championship??

Next question: Does anyone believe Auburn could have a higher moral conscience than to higher Petrino?

I am a lifelong AU fan who lives in Marietta, GA. When we won the SEC Championship and National Championship a fews year back I never spoke to my UGA friends like the posts I am seeing on this site. Totally classless. Obviously proof that some people never grow up. Here is a truth you can count on: Be careful who you put down and ridcule. Benji (and the rest of y’all bloggers)

I feel bad for Newton and Farley! They had that great 2010 season, but as of now neither is seen as anybody with a bright NFL future! And most of that has to do with CHARACTER (in their case a lack of it). That’s not to throw arrows at the AU program. I hate it when any great college player doesn’t pan out esp if it had to do with a lack of character! I hope EVERY great SEC player makes it big in the NFL esp J.Jackson and Clowney! But character will have everything to do with whether they make or not make it.

That being said….. after the way auburn fans, the team, the coaches and the players acted in 2010 auburn is getting EVERYTHING they deserve. I guess I may too if I hadn’t won a title in 30+ years. I used to be that way but I’ve calmed down past few years. You are still pent up with emotion and the frustration of not winning. I can assure you the lose that Georgia had in 2010 from Auburn has absolutely nothing to do with the extreme contempt that most Georgia fans have against Auburn. For me it started back when Shug Jordan was teaching his players to take as many Georgia players out of a game anyway possible. Complete lack of integrity just starts the many reason I hate you all so much.

tom

7576. Ha. Yeah right. Most uga fans don’t even know who shug jordan is. Your point is stupid anyway. Whatever your information is that tells you that happened is no reason to hate a school or fans. I could point to many things too along the years to hate uga, but I don’t. For whatever reason you have a head complex with auburn. Maybe its bc we are similar schools and it was a race to see who could win a title first in the modern era. We won and it eats you up.

UGA is peaking, Bama is struggling.

UGA will be favored over Bama, and when UGA gets up 20-0 like Texas A & M did, look for the rout to be on.

If Texas A & M went up 20-0 on Bama, imagine what UGA will do to Alabama with:
1) mobile QB who is also 3rd in nation in pass effic
2) 3 premiere running backs averaging over 5.5 yards per carry
3) best 2nd half and 4th quarter defense in the nation

UGA shocks BAMA with a 27+ point win, locking up a position in the BCS Championship.

Sorry tom. Georgia fans may complain and have unrealistic expectations on occassion but it takes a special breed of whiner to talk like au4ever up there. Also, when Chizik cheers and high-fives Fairley after he acts like a thug, plays dirty, and tries to injure your QB, people tend to remember that. When it comes from the top, it’s a cultural and systemic lack of class.

Long story short, no crack. Just the pleasure of seeing Chizik lose his job soon.

The way I feel about Auburn has nothing to do with winning and losing. How many times did Georgia lose to Florida in the last 20 years. I never blamed Florida and some of my best friends are Florida fans. For them I always blamed Georgia’s coaching staff for not having our kids in the right physical or mental state in order to compete.
For Auburn it’s your attitude of winning at any cost. Just like Cam Newton, Florida knew what they had but their coach didn’t want to keep a theft on the team. Cam Newton knew exactly what his father was doing but with no proof the NCAA’s hands were tied. It’s all has to do with the lack of VALUES at Auburn from the money boosters to Pat Dye and trying to get an edge AT ALL COST and not letting the kids settle it on the field.

7576DAWG has a point, for awhile there, I absolutley hated Florida with a passion, not just for the string of losses but also because during the Spurrier years, they won with such poor sportsmanship. Despite that though, you had to respect the program they put together. You can’t respect the way Auburn conducts their business.

AU should have never hired Chizik to begin. Why do you hire a coach that was a failure in a lesser league and expect him to be successful? His coaching had nothing to do with AU winning the NC. I would say about 20-30 coaches could have won with Cam, Fairley and a senior offensive line. That hire has set AU back for years to come. This is the worst Auburn team in my lifetime.

Congratulations to the Dawgs on their SEC East title. You guys earned it. Represent us well in the SEC Championship and maybe a second loss can be hung on the Tide.

It’s been pretty quiet over here in East Alabama today. Alabama losing last night, I haven’t seen many Tide fans out today.

As far as for my Gators, I’m still trying to figure out how we only have one loss. There was no business they should have won yesterday the way they played.
