Short takes: Murray, defense and angry Auburn fans

If you missed it, here’s a link to my column on Georgia’s SEC East-clinching win over Auburn Saturday night.

And here are my three “short takes” on the game.

Former Georgia and Falcons defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder didn't even look happy before the game. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

Former Georgia and Falcons defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder didn't even look happy before the game. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

1. Aaron Murray is just fine: Murray took a beating from some Georgia fans after horrible games against South Carolina and Florida but he has rebounded nicely. He completed his first 10 passes against Auburn (two for touchdowns) and threw for three scores and 208 yards in three quarters before being lifted. In the last nine quarters, going back to the fourth quarter of the Florida game, Murray is 44 for 60 for 675 yards, eight touchdowns and zero interceptions. Offensive coordinator Mime Bobo said Murray had been too “cautious,” adding: “I said, ‘Son, you know what’s going on. You’re one of the best quarterbacks in  the country. Cut it loose. If you make a turnover being aggressive, that’s OK.’”

Jarvis Jones levels Auburn quarterback Jonathan Wallace. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

2. Defense gives Georgia a chance against Alabama. Auburn is one of the weakest offensive teams around, but there’s little question Georgia’s defense is finally playing up to the level that was expected before the season. The Bulldogs have allowed just one touchdown (along with four field goals) in the last three games. The missed tackles and missed assignments, partly the result of injuries and early season suspensions, aren’t an issue right now. Add to that the Alabama offense has not been overpowering in the last two games against LSU and Texas A&M. If Georgia’s defense can play at the same level against Alabama in the SEC title game as it has against Florida, Ole Miss and Auburn, it has a very good chance to pull an upset.

This Auburn fan found a lot of room to spread out. (AP photo)

3. Auburn fans are so done with this season. In 23 years of living in Atlanta, I’ve never seen a home crowd for a major college football team — let alone a team that won a national championship just two years ago — bolt from a game so quickly. Jordan-Hare Stadium was full for kickoff, certainly a positive for a winless SEC team. But boos started to rain down in the second quarter when Georgia built its lead to 21-0, then 28-0. When Keith Marshall ran 62 yards for a score to make it 38-0 in the third quiarter, it was like somebody yelled, “Fire,” in the stadium and thousands of fans streamed out. Georgia had more fans in the stadium than Auburn in the fourth quarter. That might be the worst sign of all for coach Gene Chizik.

You must not have seen my battles with Thomas Brown. I’ve defended your bunch more than a few times since early in the season because he was repeatedly predicting “four or five losses in 2012″ for y’all–and belittling your team as a UGA opponent. Once we won the game, of course, he couldn’t say enough about you. He’s no more than a two-faced slimeball who enjoys bullying and insulting others on the blog with lies and fabrications.

I have tickets to the game at Doak, but I had foot surgery last month and am still on crutches–so not sure if I’ll be walking by then. Sure hoping not to miss it, though, since it looks like we’ll each come in with only one loss. Been a while since that happened.

DawgNole,
I’ve come to the conclusion that my Gators could beat any team in the country if the offense shows up. That said, they could lose to about half the teams in the country when the offense doesn’t show up…which is becoming more frequent. I am simply amazed that we have a 9-1 record at this juncture. Speaks volumes about the defense and special teams. If we had a better o-line and at least one WR that could consistently get some separation and not drop the ball, we would be scary good. Alas, we do not.

I see that tom, an Auburn fan, is still carrying the water for Alabama. As a UGA alumnus, I have no such allegiance for our in-state rival, Ga Tech. But since tom wants to hypothesize about what Alabama will do to the Dawgs, I’ll play along with the game, too. Here goes: the multiple – named Ga Tech Yellow Jackets/Ramblin’ Wreck/Engineers would have their way this year with the similarly nickname-confused Auburn Tigers/War Eagles/Plainsmen. Despite playing in the mediocre ACC, GT has done more than beat two teams from non-BCS conferences, one of which (New Mexico State) sports a 1-9 record and the other (La Tech) has a 6-4 record that counts the OT loss to Auburn as their closest defeat of the season. I’d say that maybe Ga Tech and Auburn could settle this in a bowl game, but the Tigers aren’t going to the postseason, are they? I guess that freed tom up enough to find his new favorite team. Personally, I’d wait until after Auburn had completed their season before turning my back on them, but maybe this is how Auburn fans roll.

tom, I may have read your comment wrongly, but it makes you no less delusional. We’ve played and beaten a team that actually beat A&M, something that Alabama, I will repeat, failed to do. We’ll find out who is better, UGA or Alabama, IF the Tide gets past Auburn. But your assertion that A&M is a better opponent than anyone the Dawgs have faced in the last 3 years completely lacks objectivity, and is based only on the fact that Bama got beat by them. Like I said, you just keep on thinking that, though. The world needs people to laugh at.

AU4Ever, that’s easy for you to say now, but I have never encountered more obnoxious, rude, mouthy fans than those from Auburn. I have had many come up to me and make comments literally on the street bc I had on a Georgia shirt. Only this year have they finally shut up, and that’s ONLY because they have zero to be mouthy about. So, before you make remarks about UGA fans, look at your own fans. Rude and obnoxious doesn’t begin to describe it. As far as your coach, he seemed classy until two years ago. He and his arrogant QB Cam Newton proved to be a perfect match. A great season turned Chizik into a classless jerk.

Tampa Gator,

You have not been right all year, your oversized UF Gator ego has been deflated and defunked all year after your post have proven to be overstatements. UF is a very very very weak offensive team that UGA struggled with because of the defense that UF played against them. Even Kevin Sumlin has stated that during the last 4 week that they were able to add about 30 more plays to their game plan since the LSU game. I know you want to figure out how to make your UF Gators look more attractive but it is not happening, After getting spanked for 59:50 seconds last saturday against a very very poor LLa team and with FSU waiting to embarrass UF and the SEC in two weeks we will all have to wait till signing day to listen to your over the top post about your Gators.

Kingdaddy puppy lover, I guess you fall into the same category as Tampa Gator except for the UGA puppy side of the aisle. The way you brag and speak anyone without knowledge would think that UGA had been a national contender for 10 plus year and won multiple BCS titles. 1980 is all you need to post. Try as you might and spin it, but without an overranked UF which is going to fall, a USC team without Lattimore will have to fight very hard to beat Clemson, what teams has UGA actually beat that would be considered a Big Boy 2012 program? That is right. The SEC is strong with UGA and without UGA, teams like LSU, Alabama, Florida during Urban and Spurrier, Tennessee under Fulmer, Auburn on the Blip Cam Newton run, have carried this conference and you do not have a (excuse the pun) a dog in the hunt. UGA has been on the outside looking in as EVERYONE listed above carried the banner to prop up the UGA name and program due to association in the Conference. The facts are UGA has NOT carried it’s weight and has been a tag-a long program and have underachieved like no other program in the country laiden with enough talent during that time to field a complete NFL team.

The truth hurts and the pain will grow even larger once the loss in the SECCG hits UGA fans right across the snout and you and many of your over the top dog fans who do not know how to say thank you to your SEC brothers will have to go wimpering off to the dog house to lick your wounds and make more excuses while speaking how really good your dogs were!

I hate having to root for Lane Kiffin and USC, but I have no choice. I’ll have to do some form of penance, but if they beat Notre Dame it’ll be worth it. Same goes for Texas against Kansas State, and/or Stanford, Oregon State, and possibly USC (again) against Oregon. Only 2 of the three undefeated teams need to fall for UGA to play for the BCS title provided the Dawgs can control their own destiny with Bama. It’s not out of the realm of possibility for these scenarios to play out, that’s for sure. Ask LSU in 2007, when they needed all kinds of help, and ultimately got it.

Comparing the Dog team that beat A&M in 2009 is so laughable. Did not that entire coaching staff get fired after last season. Please name a team outside of UF that UGA has beaten in the last 3 years that meant something as in a top 15 team? Four Year? Five Years?

Enjoy this overstated 1 loss season because whether you like it or not, avoiding the other big boys around the league ends in 2013 and the multiple loss seasons will continue.

Under the bleachers,
UF and Bama have the same record at 9-1. They have played 2 common opponents and UF is 2-0 in those games while Bama is 1-1. UF’s defense CAN play and stop a spread offense, while Bama cannot. Bama’s offense is decidely better but so is UF’s special teams. What makes you think that Bama is head and shoulders better than the Gators? They got exposed on Saturday by a freshman QB playing in a first year offense. Newsflash….Bama is flawed like everyone else.

Top 25 Offense
Top 25 Defense
Special Teams nothing spectacular plus glaring mistakes
Schedule is challenge to overcome in polls-way too many easy games
Been a Top Year for Mark Richt – his best season so-far
Despite only 64 scholarship recruits + 1 transfer-in to play Alabama
Did not prepare a back-up QB again for 8th season in a row, now
Did not lose any games to really lousy teams
Did beat a really top football team # 6 until loss # 5 after beat Florida
Loss not so much a loss as discouraging to drop 35 to nothing
Only to watch the next 2 teams beat them, & Florida destroy them
This season is not over, but when it is lose 15 senior starters + more
SEC 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 in the BCS. Texas A & M stole our bump-up
Texas A and M got bump-up in polls from # 15 all the way to # 8
Alls I want is beat wishbones & get after Alabama -our best game

“Thomas, I have no problems admitting that I am a tech fan. A win against a florida team who is on a rapid descent ? This is the reason why it is so easy for the fans of every other team out there to hate UGA. It’s the same thing every year. We all know schedules are set in advance and we can’t control them, but atleast acknowledge the talent level you beat!”

Well bob smith, if you have no problem admitting that you’re a Georgie tek fan, then make it part of your handle, By God Above. You run onto the Georgia Bulldogs’ blog, and offer-up all these opinions, based-upon you state facts – yet, have also failed to provide even once a reference for your out and out lies, and you know it. You purposely choose the bob smith, and run on to the Georgia Buldogs’ blog and make no mention whatsoever that in fact you’re a Georgia tek fan.

As I said to you in reply, which you also failed to talk about : YOU SAID bob smith that The SEC is a :

These are your words bob smith.

As soon as you said it Sunday morning that The SEC is a “so-called POWER CONFERENCE” I knew you were an ACC Georgie tek fan. Thank you for admitting it.

Now, about the so-called power conference statement bob smith, I offered up that

The SEC in BCS today :

# 4 Alabama
# 5 Georgia
# 6 Florida
# 7 LSU
# 8 Texas A & M
# 9 South Carolina

bob smith, well ?

How does one determine a “so-called power conference” by your posts or by the polls ?

By what YOU SAY, ashamed to put bob smith Georgie tek or

bob smith GT

By what YOU SAY bob smith, or the truth of the matter ?

Do you really think The SEC is NOT THE POWER CONFERENCE ?

Tell us all bob smith ?

Did you go to Georgie tek to provide such proof of your intelligence ?

(1) Did you attend Georgie tek ?
(2) Is SEC “The” Power Conference 2012 with 6 of top 9 BCS ?
(3) Is Florida a bad football team ?
(4) Or, has FL beat # 7 LSU, # 8 Texas A&M, & # 9 South Carolina ?

You see bob smith ?

A man of intelligence would look at your words bob smith and state this biased so-and-so should have the manhood to grow a pair and put his team’s allegiance in his handle to state that

_________________________________________
FLORIDA IS A HORRIBLE FOOTBALL TEAM 2012

_______________________________________

Basically, in its root form, what you did bob smith was to take my entire POINT about UGA 2012, read it, and

TWIST IT ALL AROUND saying what IS TRUE, isn’t.

First, that our Win over Florida is NOT A GREAT WIN, when it is according to the polls and when it is according to whom it is they have beat and whom it is they have lost to. In other words bob smith your opinion compared to the collective opinions of the college football world 2012, in which you are 100 percent directly in juxtaposition with.

And, second that The SEC is not in-fact according to everyone, again bob smith – not your opinion to the contrary, “The” Power Conference again 2012.

Ok, so we beat up on each other. So what ? That’s what MAKES The SEC “The” Power Conference.

You know, bob smith ?

You know too, bob smith, for a football team who did not beat the # 6 team in the nation with 9-1 record ranked themselves # 6 in the BCS including wins themselves of the # 7, # 8, , & # 9 teams 2012, and in a conference so lousy that all you can muster about The SEC is that it is a so-called conference, our coach has beat your butts 10 of the 11 times he has faced you and will again 50-9 with your not top 25 offense and # 68 defense.

No. It was inevitable that Alabama would lose to Texas A&M and Johnny Football with all their freshmen at key positions 2012, and with the fact that Alabama does not have a good a win 2012 as we do, along with the fact that no team in the history of college football has done better against Alabama than we have.

It was supposed to happen just this way, as I guaranteed repeatedly for a long-time, that Johnny Football would both pass over and run through Alabama.

___________________________________________
# 5 UGA (# 4 in Coaches’ Poll) will play # 4 Alabama while the best wins by Oregon, Notre Dame and Kansas State are over # 21 in that last BCS Poll. We would have wins over # 4 Florida and # 6 Alabama in that poll. If the DawgNation could make this point to the college football world, we would have a chance for a bump-up while they did not beat ANY team compared to EITHER # 4 Florida then or # 6 Alabama then at that time. I am not bothered by this scenario at all. We’ve got it going on.

If Georgia’s offense was so inept against Florida I-95, why did Aaron Murray game-manage Todd Gurley to the running TD to take the lead 7-0 and then try Todd Gurley again late in the 4th quarter for the Win, when Aaron Murray had to put this team on his considerable shoulders and will us to the win by the strength of his arm, only to put away Florida, while you say our Defense is not that great, note please that Florida SCORED NO TOUCHDOWN to match our TWO (2) Touchdowns ?

Yes, Cam and Auburn did win a title. Auburn DID go 14-0 which is something UGA has never done and probably never will.

We are going to show you a Tech
body of work and you will not like it leghumper.
Maybe about 60 points worth of body that you
will have no answer for. Ask the UNC coach for
advise. UGA has no defense and you know this
as well or better than anyone.
Look how the big teams ran through Dogs. You
know Bama, LSU, Texas A&M..Oh wait you did
stop them , you freaking never even played them.
Same old smelly Dogs…

Georgie tek’s Offense is NOT in the top 25. Why brag about that ? Georgia’s Offense is # 23.

Buzz2011, open mouth, switch feet. Our Offense is so much better than your Offense, that the score will be 50-9.

It is also funny how you GA guys make fun of folks from Alabama or those that went to Auburn….where I am from we see no difference between GA and Alabama. I grew up in the northern VA area and frankly never heard of UGA until I got to VA Tech and probably knew about you guys only because of your football team not because of academics.

Who has UGA played? Oh Fla which made 6 turnovers. Do you think that Bama will do that. Murry is not Johnny Football. The Bama defense will not have to worry about him running. Another blow out in the dome.

I’m not a fan of either GA or Auburn, but what exactly are the Georgia fans complaints about AU winning the national title in 2010? I seem to remember they won it on the field…don’t remember any controversy. My recollection is they were the best team in the country. So what does that have to do with the fact they are having a terrible year this year? I don’t remember the last time GA won a national title…did they ever? Considering that their schedule has worked out to be one of the weakest in the country if they don’t win one this year, when will they ever?

Remember what Tenn. did to that UGA defense. Auburn could not score on most high school teams. And Fla stop themselfs. If UGA going to do it it better be this year.

Auburn deserves ZERO sympathy. Everything about their football program is done in secrecy managed by a member of their board of regents. It’s pathetic. I was a fan of Tommy Tubberville (up until he slapped a student assistant coach this past weeked) because he brought some decency to the program. It’s all gone now. AU is PU : )

I do understand the rankings and believe UGA is a fine institution I was just making a point that GA and Alabama are both states in the Deep South and are both now known for their stellar educational systems so keep this blog to football not academics.

I almost had a tinge of sympathy for Auburn but then thought better of it. Down years are tough but it couldn’t be happening to a more deserving bunch than that crowd of all or nothing over on the plains. As a Dawg fan and Georgia Southern alumni I especially have no sympathy for Brian “van stays packed to move” Gorder. When they clean house you will get to move again.
