Georgia wins SEC East — and looks like threat to Alabama (UPDATED)

It was a night of celebrations for Todd Gurley, Aaron Murray and the Bulldogs. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

(UPDATED: 11 a.m. Sunday)

AUBURN, Ala. – This is the place where few expected Georgia would be after that ugly night in Columbia last month — not only winning games, but winning them impressively, humiliating an opponent on its home field. This is the place where many may have projected the Bulldogs to be before this season began, but certainly not since (because even Buffalo looked like a greater threat in the season opener than Auburn did Saturday night).

This is where Georgia is today: SEC East champions for the second straight season … and, yes, as improbable as it might once have seemed, a legitimate threat to beat Alabama in the Georgia Dome in three weeks.

Doubt it?

Why?

The Bulldogs thoroughly dominated Auburn 38-0. Georgia fans chanted, “SEC, SEC” in the second half. They were easy to hear because because by then most of the Auburrn fans had left.

Maybe body-slamming Auburn no longer is considered a monumental achievement for an Auburn opponent. The Tigers, two years removed from the BCS title, suddenly look two levels removed from Division 1. They’re having their worst season (2-8, 0-7) in 60 years.

But this isn’t a one night aberration. Georgia (9-1) has won four straight since the loss to South Carolina. It has won the last three by a combined score of 92-19.

A touted defense that looked out of sync for much of the season has allowed just one touchdown and four field goals in the last 12 quarters. Aaron Murray, who had three first-half touchdowns against Auburn, doesn’t look anything like the quarterback who had three first-half interceptions against Florida.

The Dogs run the ball. They stop the run. They’re not committing turnovers or dumb penalties.

While Georgia is ascending, Alabama is sputtering (relatively speaking). The Crimson Tide was fortunate to escape Baton Rouge last week with a win, and was upset Saturday by conference newbie Texas A&M — in Tuscaloosa.

“It’s been unbelievable,” said Murray, who celebrated his 22nd birthday. “Most teams might fold [after the loss to South Carolina] and think, ‘They’re going to win all of the rest of their games and our chances of making the SEC are slim.’ But we know anybody can win any week in SEC. South Carolina lost a couple, we beat Florida and now we’re heading back to Atlanta.”

Murray, who has been a different quarterback since Florida week. When he got to the team hotel, he found balloons and chocolate covered strawberries decorated like footballs, sent by his parents. He and teammates immediately scarfed them down.

His parents did not make the trip. His father, Denny, underwent surgery for thyroid cancer last month and recently underwent radiation.

“My dad had some radiation and he can’t be around people right now for three or four days, so he had to stay back,” Murray said. “Sad. First game he’s missed since I was like eight years old. He wanted to be here, I wanted him to be here, but it’s the best thing for him.”

There will be a bigger game upcoming for Murray’s parents to attend. Players and coaches generally limited their comments to the final two regular season games against Georgia Southern and Georgia Tech, not yet looking ahead to Alabama.

But safety Bacarri Rambo acknowledged, “I’m sure some people didn’t think we would [be in this position]. I’m sure a lot of people still doubt us. But we feel we can beat anybody.”

And even the coach Mark Richt said Georgia is no longer focused on winning just the conference title. A berth in the BCS bowl game is possible, although the Dogs would need to win out and get some help from the teams ahead of them in the rankings (losses by two of the following three: Kansas State, Oregon and Notre Dame).

“Atlanta is not the end of the road, we hope,” Richt said.

They did not respond well to an early hole in Columbia. But now for the first time, they are playing with a sense of momentum. They’re playing with an edge.

Assuming no hiccups against Georgia Southern and Georgia Tech, the Dogs nonetheless will be underdogs to Alabama in the Georgia Dome.

But this Tide team suddenly looks beatable. It was fortunate to beat LSU 21-17 win last week. On Saturday, Texas A&M made its first conference game trip into Tuscaloosa and won 29-24. Alabama allowed 418 yards in offense and forced three turnovers. (Auburn fans were grateful because when the Alabama score was flashed on the scoreboard it gave them something to cheer about it. That won’t cheer again until coach Gene Chizik’s firing.)

Two years ago at this time, Auburn was on the way to an undefeated season and Georgia was on the way to the Liberty Bowl (and lost).

Richt was at his absolute bottom in terms of how he was perceived by the fan base — at least until losing to Boise State and South Carolina last season.

When asked recently about handling the dramatic turn in fortunes, he said, “You just know it’s a part of the business. You’ve got to keep believing in what you do, keep grinding, keep evaluating what you do, because if you need to make a change, you make a change. Maybe you need to recruit differently or train differently in the offseason or try something different schematically. If you just totally abandon what you believe in and try to be something you’re not, you’re done.”

Georgia isn’t nearly done. A defense that underachieved so much of the season is now stuffing opponents.

Then there is Murray, he of the egged house following the loss to South Carolina and the three-interception first half against Florida. He completed his first 10 passes against Auburn. By halftime he had already thrown for 186 yards and three touchdowns.  He completed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Tavarres King, just after getting knocked to the ground by Auburn linebacker Cassanova McKinzy, which forced Murray to leave the game for a play. His threw a 56-yard strike to King, setting up Todd Gurley’s six-yard score.

This isn’t the same team we’ve watched for most of the season. It’s a team playing like a legitimate threat to Alabama and any other team in the BCS rankings.

And that’s something few could have seen coming.

SEC teams have traditionally refused to schedule games vs. high-ranked teams from other conferences. Its refreshing to see a mid-level Big 12 team beat a traditional SEC powerhouse.

FB @10:32 p.m.: The Gators participated in the SEC championship game every year from 1992 thru 1996, then again in 1999 and 2000. That’s seven times in nine years. A bit better than your Dogs’ six times in eleven years, dipwad.

My complaint about the SEC having 6 teams in the top 11 and not getting to play for the National title possibly , is because teams like Kansas State don’t even have to play a Conference Championship. They are a lot more legitimate than Notre Dame where they don’t play in a Conference and therefore will never have to play an extra game for a Championship of a Conference. Because of the Conference tie-in’s these three will probably avoid having to play ant SEC team. Maybe an SEC power team verses Notre Dame in the Sugar.
The point is when a team has to play 5 or 6 teams of the final BCS rankings and just because they only have one lose they do not get to play in the National Championship game is screams at the BCS to bring in an 8 team playoff next year so we can crown the real BCS Champion because the real Champion this year probably will not get to play in the Championship.
It is my opinion that Kansas State or Notre Dame would lose to Alabama, L.S.U., Texas A&M, South Carolina and Georgia and maybe Florida. Oregon would lose to Alabama, L.S.U. and maybe Georgia or South Carolina.

Georgie tek’s new defense isn’t any good, now is it ? 50 points they gave up today. Sad and still on NCAA Probation in Football for Major Infractions Database, back-to-back, repeat Offenders. I see they are trying call the face-lift on Alexander Memorial Coliseum a “new” basketball gym. No. No, it is not. It is a new facility built around Alexander Memorial Coliseum and will pale by comparison to the new gym we will build.

A new gym is a new gym.

I wish I were wrong about Texas A and M beating Alabama; unfortunately, I was not. Texas A and M will jump way-up in the polls to # 9, giving The Mighty SEC now 6 of the top 9 teams.

The Mighty SEC :

# 3 Alabama
# 5 Georgia, who expand their lead over Florida
# 6 Florida
# 7 LSU
# 8 South Carolina
# 9 Texas A and M

You want to explain to me again how a conference, the strongest the conference has EVER been with 6 of the top 9 teams, gets locked-out of the National Championship Title Game ?

No.

No, you cannot.

All you can do is to say that I said that Florida was not going to be that great a team 2012, and that I still say that despite their # 6 ranking. And, you say that while you yourself said NOTHING BUT HOW BAD FLORIDA WAS GOING TO BE 2012, YOURSELF. You say that I was wrong saying how bad Florida was going to be 2012, while you said exactly the same yourself if not worse; and want to pick on me about guaranteeing Texas A and M was going to beat Alabama behind Johnny Football who was offered scholarships by Stanford and Oregon. Johnny Manziel is The SEC Player of The Year. Clowney cannot get that Award, Jarvis Jones cannot get that Award, and AJ McCarron cannot get that Award.

Now, we face-off against 2 teams who neither one believe in the forward pass, when what I expected in my 12-2 season prediction was that we would beat Florida, lose to Alabama, and lose to South Carolina. Now, it was not so much we lost, but how we lost, that matters the most.

Yes, there is a strong anti-SEC sentiment.

It is NOT based-upon the BCS Rankings however, not with SEC having now 6 of the top 9 BCS ranked teams.

I still guarantee that The SEC will get our representative in the BCS National Championship 2-team Play-Off Title Game.

I firmly believe The SEC is the strongest conference in this nation, according to everyone in this great nation. I still any firmly convinced you cannot have 6 of the top 9 and not be in The Game, while the other conferences have in-fact 1 of the top teams and no other teams of relevance.

Notre Dame struggled again against yet another hapless opponent.

SEC beats up each other. Duh. It is what we do. It is what we’ve always done. It is why The SEC is the Best Conference.

The SEC has NEVER had 6 of the top 9 teams.

NEVER.

We are stronger 2012 than ever.

We are the strongest conference by a huge wide margin.

Proponents of the “all regular season games in college football” means everything, and it doesn’t matter if the best team you beat is ranked # 20, if you are undefeated, you play for the NC, can espouse this “theory” they hold dear as many times and from as high a mountaintop as they can locate.

There will ALWAYS be the sobering thought to them which they cannot entertain that excuse me, Notre Dame’s best win is # 21 Southern California, Oregon’s best win is # 21 Southern California, and Kansas State’s best win is # 24 Choklahoma.

You can TRY to tell everyone how great those teams are all you want.

The PAC-12 is a JOKE compared to The SEC.

The Big XII with 10 teams is a JOKE compared to The SEC.

What Notre Dame’s schedule looked in July, is a JOKE now compared to SEC.

Don’t tell me what Notre Dame’s schedule looked like in July, not now.

_______________
6 top 9 teams SEC
_______________

With all the national admiration The SEC enjoys, you think we’re going to sit back in our finest hour, ever, and let not even 1 of our brethren play for the NC ?

I will tell you this. You’re WRONG.

Yeah, it takes off a lot of luster for UGA to beat Alabama; but, for all the very reasons we could beat Alabama I have explained loudly for several weeks now – the facts are Alabama doesn’t have as good a win 2012 as UGA. Anyway, I said all along for the very same reason, Texas A and M would beat Alabama. Maybe the announcers couldn’t see it coming. I did. I said Johnny Football would throw the football over and run through Alabama’s Defense, himself.

How did I know ?

Because Alabama HAD BEAT NO TOP TEAMS.

Excuse me, who in the Hell did Alabama beat to be # 1 ?

Consistency by some posters on this blog, is something they play lip-service to of themselves while they criticize others for saying that Florida was not expected to be a great team 2012; while they did NOTHING BUT CRITICIZE FLORIDA THEMSELVES.

Like it or not, Florida did beat Louisiana Lafayette and Florida – our most bitter hated Rival by a Large Wide Margin whom you ran in here and proclaimed YOU WERE ROOTING FOR, while I refused to – and therefore Florida stands a very good chance still of ending up higher ranked in all the polls which will be published about 2012 than we do. Therefore, Florida is # 6 one-spot worse ranked than us, although we expanded our lead over them considerably on the game which went as I expected a 60 to nothing I quipped while it showed exactly what I thought this season would show with GurShall running the football up and down to the field, leading to 300 yards rushing by our running backs with Malcolm Mitchell and Chris Conley leading the team in receptions and with Jarvis Jones 2 more sacks and a dominating SHUT-OUT of an SEC opponent.

While you refuse to come clean on what your handle was prior to 2012 when you show up here and proclaim you know the most about college football, correcting everyone else’s posts about spelling errors on the Internet – oh horror. In fact, guaranteeing the win by Texas A&M over Alabama.

Johnny Manziel Johnny Football, I watched him all season. I studied him and his background. Not you. I figured this redshirt freshman is a DUAL-THREAT QUARTERBACK. Does he fit into the NFL ? No. But, this is college football. And, I figured it out that Johnny Football is The Man, has improved from game to game his redshirt freshman year, and would DOMINATE Alabama himself. Which is what he did. I wish he hadn’t. Just like I wish Alabama had not lost. That is not inconsistent on my part that I said he would and did because Alabama has beat no one.

Now, he has.

This is the 1st shut-out for Todd Grantham against an SEC team since Vandie 2010.

Not 60 to nothing, but pretty darn close. And, what is this Parker Welsh as back-up QB again tonight when the world knows we want his little brother to be wide-out for us a position of need 2013, I point out losing 2 senior starters at wide-out Marlon Brown, career now over; and Tavarres King.

Uriah LeMay is 6’ 2” of 4.54 speed, like his brother, who has soft hands and has been catching the balls from is older brother all his lifetime as now 1 of the top wide receivers in the country with 25 scholarship offers from the likes of Michigan, LSU, Georgia, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Nebraska, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech and South Carolina.

Mark Richt, do you not think they ALL will USE AUBURN GAME why Uriah Lemay should come to their school, where is not told one thing during recruiting and then NOT GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO IMPROVE ON THE FIELD ?

Parker Welsh is NEVER going to be our back-up QB. Not now, not ever. Christian LeMay has to learn as a REDSHIRT FRESHMAN. For God’s Sake Mark Richt and Mike Bobo, did you not see enough of Parker Welsh again tonight to cease and desist with the crap about feel-good stories for our WALK-ONS ? Put Christian LeMay in there against Georgia Southern early and let him throw some passes, and let him run when the other team does not know he is going to run. There is no upside to Parker Welsh.

Damn right I criticize the coaches and the players. And, for good bloody reasons.

While you criticize me for it, and cannot in your lifetime come up with a better guarantee than Texas A & M will beat Alabama on the strength of Johnny Football with scholarship offers from Oregon and Stanford who is deadly running and passing the football.

What word did someone misspell today, while you misspell words yourself you little Hitler who will never establish any street cred on this blog telling everyone they misspelled words, doing it yourself. Jeez Louise, what a little man. When you catch yourself going to everyone’s posts, and copying it and repeating their whole entire post, and then your 2-word reply is he misspelled “penalities” when he was trying to say how bad Florida looks with all their penalties and you unable to address his point, STFU, or someone will come in here and cram it down your freaking throat forever twit when all you have ever done as handle DawgNole which didn’t EXIST until recently is to copy someone’s entire post, re-post the whole entire post and tell them only with no discussion of their point whatsoever, that all you can tell them is how great a man you are with all this street cred you’ve built-up telling them they misspelled “penalities.”

Yes, The SEC is going to have 1 of our 6 of the top 9 teams in the nation in THE GAME.

Easier for ALABAMA to beat Texas A&M & LSU than UGA to beat Auburn and Ole Miss.

Alabama 21 LSU 17 great day by Zach Mettenberger told you
Alabama 24 Texas A&M 29, told you
Georgia 37 Ole Miss 10, told you
Georgia 38 Auburn 0, half right said 60 nothing

I said to the gentleman who answers questions of himself on the Internet, unlike you, that he needed to recalculate his ODDS of Alabama easier time beating LSU Texas A&M and UGA harder time beating Ole Miss Auburn that his PREMISE was incorrect and that his predictions therefore based-upon his stats were, well, just wrong to which he replied that he could recalculate them with slightly easier time for UGA and slightly more difficult for Alabama, but the results would be the same.

I said they would NOT.

If Bama could have been 12-0 and DAWGS 11-1 in the SEC title game and the DAWGS win they could have made it to the NC game. It will take a miracle for that to happen this year. UGA fans are the last ones who should be talking about schedules. K State this, Notre Dame, that Oregon this……fact of the matter is that to this point, UGA’s schdule is a combined 54-56! It contains a win against a Buffalo team that is 3-7 in the mid atlantic, a win against florida atlantic which is 3-7 in the sun belt, and three teams from your so called power conference SEC that do not even have a conference win! Now you travel down to D2 next week for Ga Southern and you’ll be boasted again for another lame victory. You have played ONE balanced team and that was S Carolina. We all know what happened there. Florida was exposed yet again for having 0 offense and needed a block punt to beat Louisiana Lafayette. Yea, bark on dawgs. Your schedule is NO better than that of the 3 remaining undefeateds. bob smith,

We beat # 6 Florida. Kansas State, Notre Dame nor Oregon can FINISH their season having beat a team ranked that day in the BCS at # 6.

Yes, Georgia has been criticized bob smith for not playing LSU or Alabama this season. Excuse me, our next important game is Alabama ranked # 3 in the nation.

Who is Oregon going to say they beat ? # 21 Southern California for the PAC-12 CHUMPionship game ?

Who is Notre Dame going to say they beat, a 4-5 Pitt they beat in triple OT to prove they’re a team of destiny ?

Who is Kansas State going to say they beat, when with 10 teams all that is left after all these ranked Big XII teams LEFT the Big XII to join other conferences such as # 9 Texas A & M and ranked Nebraska in the Big 10 ? # 24 Choklahoma ?

To play in the nc game, you have to be able to say on THAT DAY, the last day of the BCS Rankings, that ACCORDING TO THAT POLL THAT DAY, you beat # what bob smith ?

Yes, UGA can talk about schedules, if we end up beating # 3 Alabama since we’ve already beat # 6 Florida.

Get over it bob smith, and address the question whatever team you are a proponent of. What team are you a fan of ? And, what damn team have they beat ?

Our schedule INCLUDES bob smith, whether you can bring yourself to discuss it openly and honestly now with someone trying to work with you on your post : Florida.

Florida beat # 7 BCS Ranked LSU
Florida beat # 8 BCS Ranked South Carolina
Florida beat # 9 BCS Ranked Texas A & M

You want to talk about whom those teams BEAT bob smith ?

No.

I didn’t think so.

Yes, we beat up on each other.

You will NOT do to us what you did to Auburn in 2004.

EXCUSE ME bob smith,

Notre Dame’s best hope for their best win is over # 21 Southern California with 5-LOSSES.

Oregon’s claim to fame is the same Southern California.

And, Kansas State’s claim to fame is # 24 Choklahoma who ends the season with 5-LOSSES too including their annual Bowl Swoon.

Look, Auburn was jobbed in 2004.

Looking back, everyone now says Auburn IS the national champion 2004.

Quite obviously.

What was your criticism THAT DAY bob smith ?

That Auburn played Louisiana Monroe, Citadel, and Louisiana Tech.

Auburn won 5 games 2004 against teams who made the AP Poll Top 25 and two (2) who made the AP Poll Top 10.

Better than ANY team 2004 by a large wide margin.

Anti-SEC fans should at least grow a pair big enough to go to a SEC blog and say, as a fan of team X, I think The SEC isn’t any good.

You guys play cupcakes just like my team x.

However, bob smith, what you are wholly proving you are unable to do is to come in here and say I am a fan of team x as you can tell from my handle bob smith, and I think The Mighty SEC is

“so-called POWER CONFERENCE.”

These are your words bob smith.

Are you MAN enough to discuss them with 6 of the top 9, your post is SLANDER and LIBEL to The Mighty SEC with 6 of the top 9

yes bama will have chip on their shoulders, hopefully, with their up-coming games in-between we will not face the brunt of it, if we shut-up about it.

The fact still remains we have a better win over BCS Ranked today # 6 Florida with wins themselves over # 9 Texas A & M I told you recently would grow hairs for Florida, # 8 South Carolina whom they faced WITH my hero Marcus Lattimore. How is he please ? And, with Florida’s win over # 7 BCS Ranked LSU.

This is a BETTER WIN than Alabama 2012, which is why I predicted (1) Texas A & M beats them and (2) We would beat them, but I add now that we MUST NOT DO what I read 1 of our players saying this morning in the paper that we would. If we continue this, and 1 is way too many, we will NOT beat Alabama.

Otherwise, if we just shut-up and quit running our mouths, for the reasons I have been espousing for us and Texas A & M beating Alabama, we will because they have all their Freshmen at KEY STARTING POSITIONS.

“so-called POWER CONFERENCE.”

Put up your team name obviously in your handle, or else realize an idiot with IQ 88 can see through it that you have NO STREET CRED running in here supposedly talking about how we did this or that 2012.

We’re # 5 today and play # 3 Alabama and 1 of these 2 SEC teams in our finest hour 2012 with 6 of the top 9 that day in the BCS Rankings WILL PLAY.

Saban is right. They COULD still play.

Two of the three remaining undefeated teams have to lose in order for UGA to get to the BCS NC game. There is simply no way an undefeated team of a major conference is turned away in favor of a one-loss team. There is absolutely no way Notre Dame will be turned away in favor of a one-loss team. UGA may be the best team in the country now – - but that does not mean they will get a chance to play in the BCS NC game.

Buckeye,

You’re a jerk. For all these years, you have run in here and said all this stuff about everybody but Ohio State, when you have NEVER beat a single SEC team in a bowl game and are on NCAA PROBATION including post-season ban playing NO ONE as you always do.

Who has OHIO STATE beat 2012 ?

No one.

Exactly, jump on the band-wagon. dARON. Alabama has too many freshman starting at key positions 2012, while we have the best record all-time vs Alabama although almost all the games have always only been played in Tuscaloosa, and Alabama has NO WIN as good as our win over Florida.

It will be KSU and Oregon playing for the MNC and Alabama or Georgia playing ND in the Sugar. The really great thing about all this is Florida wont even sniff a BCS bowl game and Spurrier, and his chickens, get to watch Georgia in another SECCG. I love watching UGA haters cry on these boards.

Ohio State’s best win 2012 is in OVERTIME over 4-6 Purdue at the horseshoe.

You have NOT played anyone, which is why NO ONE TALKS about Ohio State.

Beat someone and come back and talk to us about whom it is we beat.

Clear enough, Jerk ?
