Falcons’ Dirk Koetter may be candidate at Kentucky

Is Dirk Koetter peeking at Kentucky job? (Curtis Compton/AJC)

There’s a problem for a football team when one of its assistant coaches is viewed as being good at his job: He becomes a candidate for a better one. But the question Dirk Koetter may have to ask himself is whether being Kentucky’s head football coach is superior to being the Falcons’ offensive coordinator.

Koetter, whose work with the Falcons’ offense and quarterback Matt Ryan has contributed to the team’s 8-0 start, has been listed as a coaching candidate at Kentucky, which fired Joker Phillips on Sunday. Yahoo’s Pat Forde listed Koetter, Louisiana Tech coach Sonny Dykes and “several college offensive coordinators” as job candidates, attributing the

information to unnamed sources.

Coaching rumors often are baseless. But Forde is a solid reporter, generally doesn’t throw stuff against the wall and also is pretty tapped in to all things Kentucky.

Falcons coach Mike Smith said Monday that the school had not requested permission to speak to Koetter.

But would Koetter even want the Wildcats’ job? Most assistants live for head coaching opportunities. But Kentucky football never has been viewed as a destination job — just the opposite — and Koetter is in a pretty good situation now, working with great offensive talent and in a stable organization. He also doesn’t have to recruit.

He had success as the head coach at Boise State, going 26-10 over three seasons (1998-2000), left for Arizona State but was fired after going 40-34 in six seasons (2001-06), including only 21-28 in Pacific 10 Conference play. Then came his five years with the Jacksonville Jaguars before the Falcons hired him in the offseason.

For what it’s worth, Forde also wrote what others have previously speculated — that Bobby Petrino will not be a candidate at Kentucky. I’m not sure if that’s because of Petrino’s embarrassing exits at his last two jobs — quit with Falcons, fired after having an extramarital affair with a subordinate at Arkansas — or because Petrino thinks he can do better.

Too bad. It would’ve been amusing seeing John Calipari and Petrino trying to co-exist in the same athletic department.

I don`t believe Koetter would want the UK job. At this point it would be a “carear
killer” for anyone who takes it unless someone is desparate for a hc job.

UK better look elsewhere. Falcons are only midway through the regular season, with postseason to come and hopefully a deep run for Atlanta.

Dirk is in his 1st here here. Only getting started. Lots of things to accomplish with this NFL team and the high level of talent in place.

If DK wants to be a head coach in college again, he should be more selective than this opening. That’s a major rebuild there at the basketball school.

Pertrino’s next job; IE: Wyoming, New Mexico or Texas El Paso. Can’t imagine a big Univ President taking a chance on him this soon and with all that baggage and disruption that comes with him! Just keep him out of the South, pls.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Surely he knows better. Even if he went there and won 9 games, nobody in Lexington would care.

Stay another year with the Falcons, with success, and he will get HC offers from the NFL for ‘14 –

Cowboys, Jets, and others will be looking by then.

Kentucky doesn’t hire resumes, they make them. Someone young will get a shot, but a good good year at Kentucky is 8-4 tops. The line up to play is just too much.

Didn’t DK interview for the Kansas HC job when it was open last season? Not quite as lowly as Kentucky, since they went to (and won) a BCS game.

Hope he stays because we’ve looked good this year; however, with the ridiculous amount of weapons we have on offense and the versatility of guys like Julio and Quizz, I think we’d survive his departure.

I hope he doesnt leave us. One of the best things thats happened to this org. I remember how people were all down on Koetter. I said we should give the guy a chance. Now we sit 8-0 and a LOT of that has to do with how Koetter has revamped the offense. Hope he stays!

Kentucky is a black hole for football coaches. Just ask Bear Bryant. UK’s best hope is to bring back Rich Brooks. That’s about as good as it gets for them.

I hope Koetter stays, at least through the end of the year even if he decides to take the Kentucky job. He’s done a remarkable job thus far in helping Ryan and the entire offense and losing that continuity at any point during the season could prove disastrous. Best case scenario is obviously that he’d turn down the UK job and stay for a long time.

Going their would be a Big BIG mistake for his coaching future. Auburn maybe Even UT but not UK. They have to far to go. I do think he’s getting to much of the credit for what’s happening for the Falcons offense. He did have alot to work with. Now Mike Nolan has made a bigger difference or should I say impact !! Mike & the rest had alraedy started heading in this direction by taking Jones !! Dirk was just another spoke in the wheel !! 8 games doesn’t mean a whole lot right now. Now if it keeps up for a couple years? He couldn’t ask for a better place to work !! We’ll see what his goals are? TEAM or ME

He’s not going anywhere. Why would he? When he has an offense like Atlanta has at his disposal. Why would he go to Kentucky where football obviously is second fiddle to basketball? He’d have to recruit, try to bring Kentucky to relevance in the SEC, etc. No way he leaves. It just wouldn’t be smart. He has a great team in Atlanta and a great position. He’s just getting started here.
