Here’s how Georgia can get to BCS game (step by step) (UPDATED)

Will Georgia players and fans have something to celebrate with a BCS title berth? (AP photo)

(Video added below)

It wasn’t long after Georgia’s win over Florida when I received a few emails and messages on Twitter asking whether the Bulldogs could make it to the BCS championship game. So while this certainly qualifies as putting the cart before the horse – or the crystal trophy before even the SEC East – here’s an outline of what has to happen for the Dogs to get to this year’s BCS title game in Miami on Jan. 7.

1. No. 6 Georgia needs to win its final four regular season games: Mississippi (home), at Auburn (which potentially clinches the East), Georgia Southern (home) and Georgia Tech (home). The Dogs will be favored in all four. They are 14-to-17½-point favorites over Mississippi. Georgia also can’t afford to look unimpressive in the wins because there is a chance that voters in the two polls used in the BCS equation drop them in the rankings.

2. No. 1 Alabama likely needs to beat No. 5 LSU. The reason for that is if Georgia and LSU both win out, LSU is staying ahead of Georgia but there’s no guarantee that Alabama would drop behind the Dogs if they lose this Saturday to the Tigers. So Georgia’s only assurance of passing one of the two (LSU) is an Alabama win.

3. Two of the following three schools need to lose a game: No. 2 Kansas State and/or No. 3 Notre Dame and/or No. 4 Oregon. Let’s break this down by school:

• Kansas State doesn’t get much love because it plays in what remains of the Big 12. But the Wildcats are coming off impressive wins over West Virginia (55-14) and Tech Tech (55-24). They have their two toughest remaining opponents at home – Oklahoma State this week and Texas in the final week – as well as TCU and Baylor on the road. Kansas State’s biggest break: There is no Big 12 championship game anymore — the conference has only 10 schools, two under the minimum, after the defections of Nebraska and Colorado. So it can just sit back and watch the others play, except for …

• Notre Dame also will not play in a conference championship game as a result of being independent. Bu the Irish still must play at USC in the final week. (So Georgia fans could be in the position of rooting for Lane Kiffin.) Notre Dame’s other three games: Pittsburgh (home), at Boston College and Wake Forest (home).

• Oregon has by far the most difficult remaining schedule, playing three ranked teams – at USC (No. 17 BCS) this week, home against Stanford (14) Nov. 17 and at rival Oregon State (11) in the final game. The Ducks also play at home against Cal.

4. If all of that happens, the Dogs can finish as one of BCS’s top two teams if they accomplish just one more thing: defeat Alabama in the SEC championship game. In other words, they would have to beat the nation’s best team for the conference title just for a chance to play for the opportunity to be the best team for the national title.

That would be the most difficult win of all.

So anybody want to put some odds on this?

Personally, I just want to win out the year and not worry about any BCS talk. Even if we win out (including beating Alabama in a SEC championship game) if the other teams remain undefeated, they deserve to get to the national title game more than we do. I just want to see UGA make it to the SEC title game and hopefully have the same defense that played Florida show up.

Now if we could just get Aaron Murray to stop making terrible decisions in big games…

It’s a tall order. Oregon, ND and KSU all have easy schedules for the remainder of the season and beating Alabama will be tough.

But we also don’t need to be focusing on this. We need to focus on winning games. Nothing else matters if we lose even one game. We can do this. Go dogs.

If UGA and Alabama wins out and gets to Atlanta, there is no doubt in my mind that the SEC Championship game will be a National Semifinal game. If UGA wins, there is no way the BCS cannot take a one loss SEC Champ who posted wins over the number 1 and 2 teams in the nation.

Very low odds, but I was telling several friends and my father yesterday that we had a shot to go into the SEC title game with a berth on the line.

Granted, I don’t think we can beat either LSU or Alabama, regardless of site/venue, so there’s that, too…

Just start off by beating Ole Miss. Last week every person on these blogs were not speaking very highly of them including this poster. I still think this team is not championship calibur. Florida had the worst game of their season, which it had to to give us a chance. No, I’m not taking anything away from Jarvis Jones. He is a main reason why UF could not get going.
Murray is not a QB anyone is confident in during the big games. Especially Bama!!
Just beat Ole Miss!!!

Odds? How about a million to one. They squeak past KY, they let the Vols put up 44 points, and Fla just played ugly. Bama will destroy them and want even be close.

Some of you are crazy already saying how UGA will beat Alabama in the SEC Championship game. That comes from a UGA grad. Have you watched Bama? They are like an NFL team. Need to beat a pretty good Ole Miss team first and then at Auburn, where anything can happen. Remember Auburn almost beat LSU at home this year. Tech, while pathetic, has nothing to play for so that could be tough as well, although I doubt it.

Yeah, he’s correct about the scenario. BUT, one might as well be factoring in the chances of a team getting wiped out in a plane crash…because at the end of the day, no matter how the stars line up, UGA would have to beat Bama in the SEC match-up. And Bama would take buses instead of planes to come over to Atlanta. So it’s a wonderful dream that the Dawgs might get there. Yet the odds are steeply against it.

Haters out there. Dawgs have won 17 of their last 20 games. Losing a night game on the road in the SEC will not disqualify us from national title. 5 games to go. One at a time. We have the talent. Murray played good enough in last year’s LSU game for us to win. He threw 4 TD’s in a 42 point offensive effort against USC last year. He can perform in big games.

the key comment from Schultz was to win impressive when we are favored the next 4 weeks. That is the key to stay up in the BCS ratings till the SEC game. If that happens, let the chips fall where they may in Atlanta. That’s all you can ask for – is a chance. A lot of work to do thill then.

Every year when we get to this point in the season there is always 4-6 undefeated teams and espn is always making a big deal about all these teams finishing undefeated but it never happens. at least 2 or 3 of those teams will lose no matter who is on their schedule. it is just to hard for that many teams to make it undefeated. one year auburn did it when they got left out that was 3 teams undefeated and i am talking about bcs conference teams. oregon will trip up they have not played a good team yet there one challenge was arizona state a team that mizzou beat who just won its first conference game. Oregon will have injuries and have to get up the next three or four weeks it will be tough. when you play better competition your team usually takes on more injuries and it just takes a toll on the body that is what makes schedules like the one s.c. and florida had just ridiculous we will experience that next yr.

Let’s just take it one game at a time & see how the remainder of the season plays out…

We might need Shawn Williams to call out AM & get the ship righted.. If we had above – average QB play in big games, we’d not be having this discussion & would be in the top 3..

Regardless – Focus one game at a time & Git er Done… GATA!!

alabama is so well coached. they are like watching a machine. you got to give saban and those young men a lot of credit for buying in to him but he might be one of the best coaches ever who knows how many championships he will end up winning. once that 4 game playoff takes place saban will almost always get into that bc then you can lose a game maybe two and make it and you got to like his chances in that. a great coach and motivator in a four game playoff scenario you got to like saban’s chances. all these other conferences think that once the four game playoff starts the sec wont win anymore champioships i think we will win some we never should have been in bc the sec will always have a team in the top 4 and i like their chances of winning it.

I remember back to November last year when kickers cost OK State, Boise St, and at least one other the shot to remain undefeated and be in a title game. So it is very conceivable teams ahead of UGA will get upset. The SEC championship? If Dawgs can pull that off, there better not be a rematch like last year.

Simply put, Georgia cannot beat Alabama because of Aaron Murray. Murray puts up great numbers against poor to mediocre teams but chokes in the big games. His poor play almost cost us against Florida.

College football news this morning telling all the top draft picks to consider the fate of Lattimore and the millions it cost him by playing a meaningless football game…JJones is mentioned in the article as someone who should heed this advice… has nothing left to prove by playing anymore this season…he should walk away and prepare for the combine. Tear your knee up and see how many of the dwag fans show up with $$ to make up what you lost by getting injured playing for a team headed to another generic bowl game…you can always go back to school, even a respectable one…you only get drafted once…alot of $$ difference between a top 5 pick and day two pick…makes sense to me…why should any proven top pick continue to play?
