Short takes: Jarvis Jones rules, Aaron Murray escapes

Aaron Murray struggled for most of the game but had a big 47-yard touchdown pass play to Malcolm Mitchell late in the game. (Bob Andres/AJC)

Aaron Murray struggled for most of the game but had a big 47-yard touchdown pass play to Malcolm Mitchell late in the game. (Bob Andres/AJC)

(I’ll be back with a column from the Georgia-Florida game shortly. Until then, here are my three short takes on the game.)

1. JARVIS JONES A DIFFERENCE-MAKER. If the Georgia outside linebacker (ankle, groin, knee) is still not at full strength, it would be scary to watch him when he is. In a game when defense (and turnovers) ruled the day, Jones stood out. After missing last week’s game against Kentucky, he returned and had four sacks, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and a dozen tackles. If NFL scouts were watching, they were salivating.

2. AARON MURRAY: NOT LOVING JACKSONVILLE: The Georgia quarterback had one of the worst games of his career two years ago, with four turnovers in the Florida game as a freshman. It appeared he would revisit that low Saturday, with interceptions in three consecutive first-half possessions. The most damaging turnover: a third-down pass from the Florida 9 that killed a scoring drive. But Murray amended for some miscues with his late-game 45-yard touchdown pass to Malcolm Mitchell that made the score 17-9.

3. DISCIPLINE ISSUES EVIDENT: The Bulldogs had 14 penalties for well over 100 yards, including some really foolish personal fouls, such as Mitchell for taunting a Florida defensive back after a catch and cornerback Devin Bowman slapping a Florida player on the helmet after a play was dead. In most games, that would cost them. Certainly, against Alabama, they wouldn’t get away with it.

We learned three things today – FLA way overrated, UGA still not good, and neither deserves to be in the SEC Champ game. That was a pathetically played game. 12 turnovers, what , 20 penalties for over 200 yards. Bama is going to DESTROY UGA.

The defense won this game …. No doubt about it, they showed up when challenged. Well, maybe except for Ogletree who missed more tackles than he made. But as a unit they came together and showed some stones !!!!

We should all give them Hell every week. That was great. Way to go Aaron Murray. Jarvis Jones Player of the Game. Don’t tell me Malcolm Mitchell is not our best wide receiver – All America. Did you see the block downfield to spring him to the end zone by Artie Lynch. That is a great win. Wonderful. There is one important discussion to today and that, of course, is my hero Marcus Lattimore. May God be with this young man. We lose you Marcus. Todd Gurley, on this day of Marcus Lattimore’s tragedy, you can move on now and play for him and us; play for all of us who Love this game of College Football. Better than the hobnail boot David Greene to Verron Haynes in the checkerboard end zone because we Lost 4 games 2001 beating # 4 vols. Better than our latest in 2009 Georgie tek on all runs all day beating then top 10 knocking them down to make their ranking # 13. Better than # 6 LSU for SEC Championship Georgia Dome because we Lost 3 games and made our ranking not as good as LSU and not as good as Alabama DJ Shockley’s 2005 season. Better than # 9 Auburn we beat in 2006 because we Lost 4 games 2006. 2012 we can hold our heads up high and Celebrate. We all should give our team Hell all week every week. Awesome. 1-Loss Season; face # 1 Alabama, and we can go in there and play Georgia Bulldogs’ Football, for on this night in JAX, we won back-to-back over # 2 Florida to knock them out of the BCS, knock them out of The SEC East and SEC Championship Game, and propel us from # 10 in the nation to obviously somewhere in the Top 5 or so. Just Awesome. A Win. Todd Grantham went over to Aaron Murray after the touchdown pass, on a drive when Aaron Murray with the ball and us a 1-point lead with 10 minutes to go, put us on his back, and willed us to the win. A Todd Gurley rush was stopped, and every other play an Aaron Murray pass, culminating in hitting Malcolm Mitchell with the 45-yard TD Pass thanks to the block by Artie Lynch. Maybe Florida can get to their 3 or 4 Loss season, yet; still holding out hope for that. Congratulations. We play well when we are mean and nasty. Bring on Alabama, for we have a better win than they. But, don’t take anything away from Florida on this night, or our Defense which just man-handled Florida – giving the ball back to the offense all night long, punched in once to begin the game by Todd Gurley and punched in by Aaron Murray to Malcolm Mitchell. Followed by Jarvis Jones forced fumble to Bacarri Rambo to put the game away; 3 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 2 fumble recoveries Jarvis Jones – Most Celebrated Linebacker in Georgia Bulldogs’ 120-year history.

I have to laugh.

UGA gets the biggest win in the last four years, and somebody had to bring up the “fire” word, if only to concede it should be the farthest thing from anybody’s mind at this moment, which most sane people are savoring.

Give me a break! Great win! Players playing with emotion sometimes make stupid mental mistakes in the heat of battle. Yes, were I a coach, I would have ripped into Malcolm Mitchell for the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. He made amends though, didn’t he? The mistakes can be fixed–the defense played with real passion for the first time this season. Savor the victory!

I’m so glad that we beat Florida; we won’t beat Alabama unless they just don’t show up for the game. Our fundamental problem as a team persists; inconsistent and poor coaching and performance from one game to the next. Until we fix that, we’ll continue this roller coaster ride.

PS- Just listening to Richt’s post-game comments…he sounds like the coach from some 3rd rate team who got lucky and won one against a ranked team. Unbefitting a program like Georgia’s that has so much money poured into it and such exceptional talent that comes to it year after year.

I think the important thing to say about Murray is that there are some games that you have your QB win and there are some games that you have your QB not lose.

This was a game that could have been easily lost without an experienced and talented QB who was facing a well disciplined and athletic defense.

He made mistakes but none fatal and he made the plays he needed to make in the 4th quarter when he had to.

He has thrown for 76 TD’s in 35 games now. Not too shabby.

We opened up the offense in the 4th quarter when the Gators were getting tired and scored a TD and put it away. All Bulldogs should stand tall.

Great to win, though ugly to watch. Nice to see AMurray throw darts in the fourth, after struggling whole game. Nice rebound by Mitchell. Incredible defensive effort all around. Believe FU is better than they looked today. Some of that was great D, but some was a third emotional game in a row. LSU-USCe-UGA is a tough month for anyone. Hard to maintain the edge. Just sayin’. Kudos to Grantham, and especially Williams, who should be DC of the week. Glad the team responded positively. Biggest question was where were the WRs and TEs all game. They’re not getting separation, and Murray usually had nowhere to throw. FU’s D is good, but their DBs are (usually) not great. They sure looked great tonight. Small complaints, to be sure, given the results. It’s disappointing, though, that it takes uber-emotion to get the team to play well. Extra emotion usually brings extra penalties, so you get what you got. Hope they can learn to play emotionally from snap to whistle and avoid the extracurricular. Jarvis for write-in! Go Dawgs!

Big props to Todd Gurley today. The man had a tough second half, but the fact of the matter is that he wasn’t getting dropped for losses every time. He was getting 1, 2, or 3 yards on a lot of carries. That makes such a huge difference in terms of momentum. The Gators’ D never felt like they were dominating the line of scrimmage. That confused the hell out of them, so our young O-line deserves a hell of a lot of credit today. Great job.

10-2 is a good year! Right?

Watch Alabama if Mississippi State turns the ball over early multiple times. They will crush them into dust. The game will not be in doubt in the 4th quarter. There will not be multiple personal fouls or jaw-jacking with the other team. They will dominate because they are tough mentally and physically.

And when they win they won’t go jumping in the stands.

Georgia wins an ugly game gifted to them by Florida and the players go running for the stands like they won the SEC Championship.

DawginLex: Welcome back to the forum. We’ve missed you here, but I fully expected you to show up and crow about what a great game the ‘Dogs played today.
I told Stinger2 yesterday that I’d be on here to say I was wrong about the outcome–and the apparent preparation, at least for the U.Ga. defense, which played well for the entire game today.
As for the turning in of our diplomas, I have two, so I can spare one of those if it makes you feel any bigger about being able to say, “I told you so.”

Two of Murray’s pics he tried to thread the needle in good coverage and the ball got popped into the air. The third, he just badly overthrew… I don’t think the wind could be blamed on any of his bad throws; I didn’t see it that way, at least… Still, it’s a “W.”

When asked about the impact S. Williams had on the team–

Richt didn’t respond to the question.

SW did the team and the coaching staff a HUGE favor.
He showed some leadership.

Richt wouldn’t acknowledge it.

SW had fire and cared enough to call out his teamates.

Richt made him apologize for it.

If this game had been for a national championship, you’d still see some fans/trolls complain about how the win being too ugly. At some point, in big games, the only thing that matters is whether you win or lose. When we’re playing Kentucky or Florida Atlantic or Georgia Southern or other teams like that, hell yeah, style points matter. When we’re playing the second-ranked team in the country, I do not give a damn about how good we look if we win.

Sometimes you gotta win sloppy. This game is played on emotion and we matched them and made a few more plays. We couldn’t underachieve on defense all year. We finally started smacking people around and if we got a few penalties along the way so be it.

Well, first off…UF was overrated.
Second, the gripe is not with a win looking bad.
It is with a team habitually underacheiving in big games.
It’s about a team who plays without discipline in big games.

The win was great. 10-11 wins are great.
But we can’t keep stinking it up on national TV when
We should at least compete in a big game.

The SC loss was the last straw for many alums.
Can’t take that kind of loss too many times.

Richt is responsible for it happening too often.
When the kids aren’t ready to play…he is responsible.

And by the way, style points always matter
win or lose
if you ever hope to play for the MNC.

for all of us wh can say ” WE TOLD YOU SO” This game was played at the line of scrimmage
It was old fashion football and proved that even without 600 yds of offense, this brand of football
is not only fun to play but to watch….A Murray one third his normal production and yet leads the first drive like a surgeon and the last like a GENERAL.. but the boys on the line on both sides of the ball
were the real story.. Somebody challenged their manhood and they put it on display today.. the old fashioned way..

Everybody remembers how important ERK was to the attitude of the JUNK YARD DAWGS..
Somewhere right now He ’s lighting up a CIGAR and telling L GRIZZARD “that was a game
worth watching”

We won this game because we had more points than the other team.
This win was very lucky.
UF played just a little worse than we did.
This was a big game where the team didn’t look fully prepared.
The players were undisciplined.
Had UF played the way they’d been playing
this would have been a blowout.

Big game–sure.

First of all – I love this win – two in a row over the hated Gators – Wow…..were they over rated? C’mon – LSU was not rolling when they played – and SC gave the game away just like we did against them – having said that – they were a good defense but only an average offense. Jarvis Jones is a once in a generation type of player – enjoy him while you can. The defense we saw tonight is what we should have been seeing all year long – hopefully, they will realize that this team needs that kind of effort every week. Unfortunately, Murray still has the big game monkey on his back – a poor performance. Even the TD pass to Mitchell was more about Mithcell’s great after catch run than anything Murray did. He just gets rattled or something. Still, he’s a good QB and when he’s hot he’s unreal. He just needs to calm down. Discipline? Penalties? Both teams were rabid – look at it this way – if we would not have matched the insane level of adrenaline that Florida came out with we would have been steam rolled. Penalties and pushing and pulling in this game, with so much at stake was almost unavoidable. Having said that, we cannot afford to play in such a manner that we cost ourselves over a 150 yards in penalties and expect to win many games. The only saving grace was that Florida was just as amped and crazy as we were and so it offset. Some people will try and pooh pooh this win and say that we won because Florida played so poorly – hey man, that’s part of the game. You know Spurrier must be so ticked that he whooped us and then blew another run at the SEC east title by losing two in a row – the sad part for SC fans today was the loss of Lattimore. A very tragic injury. Prayers for the young mans complete and speedy recovery. Bottom line: WE BEAT THOSE EGG SUCKING GATORS FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW! I’ll take it any way it comes, baby! GO DAWGS!

The Analyst here: First lets get to the HATERS, Shut the smuck up. You are shutdown to NOBODY STATUS, now let me get down to business, Georgia’s Defense showed up and played like grown men today. Jarvis Jones is by far the most gifted LB in this years draft, outside Tao from Notre Dame. His play tonight brought back memories of Wilbur Marshall and his devastation on Georgia. in the eighties. The Offense(Really Murray) was pathetic. He had time to throw, and consistently never checks down to his second and third options. Mark Richt has a fear of replacing QB’s who mess up and his coaching is still suspect, but Grantham did a GREAT JOB tonight. Bobo you still can’t, or don’t get it do you? 90% of your 3rd down plays you ran outta the shot gun and it killed the Gators ability to think. They stacked the box and came.without having to pay for it. Secondly Bobo when are you gonna shorten the passing game and use check downs, T.E’s and utilize Marshall more in the open field. This kid has speed, and open field ability and isn’tt being used properly. I thought the special teams was excellent except dumb penalty’s. All in all good game, not great, but we can’t celebrate to long, OLE MISS is coming next week, and they looking to knock a team off for a signature win. Go Dawgs LETS ROLL Against the Tide.

Great win by the Dawgs, but…

1. Discipline is STILL an issue. Malcolm Mitchell taunted opposing DBs in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd quarters, but he was never disciplined. At least when a special teams or defensive player gets a dumb penalty, Coach Grantham is in their face ripping them a new one, but when Mitchell got the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the 4th, nothing was done. I’m a staunch Richt supporter, but that’s probably the one area where I wish we had an offensive coach that would rip into a player at a moment’s notice. There’s no way the excessive celebration foolishness would last on a Nick Saban/Bob Stoops/Mack Brown team.

2. Our defense played lights out, but our offense is still questionable. We might win the East, but it’s going to be the 2011 SEC Championship all over again I’m afraid.

3. Aaron Murray sucks.

That’s an improvement over the usual Orlando bowl. Keep it real. The 35-7 Cock blowout hurt the Dogs chances for a National title. Ole Miss is a home game and a trap game for UGA next week.
