Short takes: Jarvis Jones rules, Aaron Murray escapes

Aaron Murray struggled for most of the game but had a big 47-yard touchdown pass play to Malcolm Mitchell late in the game. (Bob Andres/AJC)

(I’ll be back with a column from the Georgia-Florida game shortly. Until then, here are my three short takes on the game.)

1. JARVIS JONES A DIFFERENCE-MAKER. If the Georgia outside linebacker (ankle, groin, knee) is still not at full strength, it would be scary to watch him when he is. In a game when defense (and turnovers) ruled the day, Jones stood out. After missing last week’s game against Kentucky, he returned and had four sacks, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and a dozen tackles. If NFL scouts were watching, they were salivating.

2. AARON MURRAY: NOT LOVING JACKSONVILLE: The Georgia quarterback had one of the worst games of his career two years ago, with four turnovers in the Florida game as a freshman. It appeared he would revisit that low Saturday, with interceptions in three consecutive first-half possessions. The most damaging turnover: a third-down pass from the Florida 9 that killed a scoring drive. But Murray amended for some miscues with his late-game 45-yard touchdown pass to Malcolm Mitchell that made the score 17-9.

3. DISCIPLINE ISSUES EVIDENT: The Bulldogs had 14 penalties for well over 100 yards, including some really foolish personal fouls, such as Mitchell for taunting a Florida defensive back after a catch and cornerback Devin Bowman slapping a Florida player on the helmet after a play was dead. In most games, that would cost them. Certainly, against Alabama, they wouldn’t get away with it.

Alabama 14-0 in the first quarter. They are going to pound #11 Miss State like they are Vanderbilt. That is what true Georgia fans should want the program to become given the collective talent in this state.

Steve – you need to look in the mirror. Murray threw three int’s and how many in his series with Florida. Florida lost because they have no offense- they didn’t have one against South Carolina. I’m glad the dogs won, but UGA has a lot of problems to fix before they can compete with the top 5.

The Analyst here: First lets get to the HATERS, Shut the smuck up. You are shutdown to NOBODY STATUS, now let me get down to business, Georgia’s Defense showed up and played like grown men today. Jarvis Jones is by far the most gifted LB in this years draft, outside Tao from Notre Dame. His play tonight brought back memories of Wilbur Marshall and his devastation on Georgia. in the eighties. The Offense(Really Murray) was pathetic. He had time to throw, and consistently never checks down to his second and third options. Mark Richt has a fear of replacing QB’s who mess up and his coaching is still suspect, but Grantham did a GREAT JOB tonight. Bobo you still can’t, or don’t get it do you? 90% of your 3rd down plays you ran outta the shot gun and it killed the Gators ability to think. They stacked the box and came.without having to pay for it. Secondly Bobo when are you gonna shorten the passing game and use check downs, T.E’s and utilize Marshall more in the open field. This kid has speed, and open field ability and isn’tt being used properly. I thought the special teams was excellent except dumb penalty’s. All in all good game, not great, but we can’t celebrate to long, OLE MISS is coming next week, and they looking to knock a team off for a signature win. Go Dawgs LETS ROLL Against the Tide.

Let me put this as politely as I can. Most of us UGA fans understand the game, love our guys and our coaches. We are sick and tired of fans like you. If you do not like CMR then do not watch UGA and do not come on these blogs to run down out coaches and team or go find another team to root for.

You and your fellow dumb a$$ fans are hurting the program with recruiting and keep by keeping a negative attitude going and we true fans are sick of you BS. Either get on board or STFU.

Say good bye Gene Chizik………..49 – 14 half way through the third quarter and the stadium is half empty and the people are running out the exits. Wow – who would have thought Auburn would ever implode like that.

Congrats to the dogs.
Not to crow, but I called it.
Who gives a flip about style points.

Told y’all, the pressure was on Muschamp.
His team was sloppy & nervous all day.
Fla needs a QB. Driskell was worse than Murray.

Finish the season without another loss & you’re reward is playing on ESPN!!

I’m not bored.

Excited about the prospects of a Bama-UGA SEC CG.
Hard to believe it’d be the first ever meeting between the 2 sides in the 20 year history of the game.

Great win by the Dawgs, but…

1. Discipline is STILL an issue. Malcolm Mitchell taunted opposing DBs in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd quarters, but he was never disciplined. At least when a special teams or defensive player gets a dumb penalty, Coach Grantham is in their face ripping them a new one, but when Mitchell got the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the 4th, nothing was done. I’m a staunch Richt supporter, but that’s probably the one area where I wish we had an offensive coach that would rip into a player at a moment’s notice. There’s no way the excessive celebration foolishness would last on a Nick Saban/Bob Stoops/Mack Brown team.

2. Our defense played lights out, but our offense is still questionable. We might win the East, but it’s going to be the 2011 SEC Championship all over again I’m afraid.

3. Aaron Murray sucks.

If you think you can throw 3 ints vs Bama and still win you are delusional. We won’t beat Saban and Bama playing sloppy ball. The Tide won’t give the ball back to you like UF did. Just enjoy the win and keep it real. UGA is not Miami bound there are undefeated teams way ahead in the rankings. For all today’s win was worth UGA is now in contention for the Sugar Bowl. That’s an improvement over the usual Orlando bowl. Keep it real. The 35-7 Cock blowout hurt the Dogs chances for a National title. Ole Miss is a home game and a trap game for UGA next week. I will not crown the Dogs for a sloppy will vs. overrated UF ! Richt is now 4-8 against UF. Go Dogs !

Can’t crown the Dogs SEC Champs for a sloppy game and win over UF. A win is a win. The Dogs won’t win the SEC with Murray’s performances, but it maybe good enough to back into another SEC East Division title. Spurrier still had a harder SEC schedule than Richt. Too bad for the Cocks. And we gotta send a prayer up for SC’s RB Lattimore for successful surgery and recovery for his knee injury. GO DOGS !

Nice win but compare the discipline of Alabama against the foolishness of the Dawgs. I still believe Richt should be fired after the season. The program is an embarrassment.

Just FYI: The Florida player hit Devin Bowman first. He got caught on the retaliation.

I am ok with penalties when it is the result of playing high-motor football, rather than out of frustration. It is a better tradeoff than getting less than 50 penalty yards and looking like walking zombies in Columbia, SC

OK, folks…Ugly but good win. And just to set the record straight, UGA had 3, count them 3 turnovers. UF had 6.

Ole Miss memories

October 30th, 2012

Wedding in 1975, going into the church, UGA had a nice lead on Ole Miss. By the reception, we had lost.
First wedding anniversary in 1976, UGA ’s Ray Goff hit streaking Gene Washington for a quck TD pass. End of game, Ole Miss won and UGA scored that one TD.

Ole. Miss will come to Athens sky high. CMR and Bobo and CTG had better rev them up or it could end upmfeeling like Florida beat us 70-0.

UGA ,…… Better be ready to play .

Go Dogs!!
