Short takes: Jarvis Jones rules, Aaron Murray escapes

Aaron Murray struggled for most of the game but had a big 47-yard touchdown pass play to Malcolm Mitchell late in the game. (Bob Andres/AJC)

(I’ll be back with a column from the Georgia-Florida game shortly. Until then, here are my three short takes on the game.)

1. JARVIS JONES A DIFFERENCE-MAKER. If the Georgia outside linebacker (ankle, groin, knee) is still not at full strength, it would be scary to watch him when he is. In a game when defense (and turnovers) ruled the day, Jones stood out. After missing last week’s game against Kentucky, he returned and had four sacks, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and a dozen tackles. If NFL scouts were watching, they were salivating.

2. AARON MURRAY: NOT LOVING JACKSONVILLE: The Georgia quarterback had one of the worst games of his career two years ago, with four turnovers in the Florida game as a freshman. It appeared he would revisit that low Saturday, with interceptions in three consecutive first-half possessions. The most damaging turnover: a third-down pass from the Florida 9 that killed a scoring drive. But Murray amended for some miscues with his late-game 45-yard touchdown pass to Malcolm Mitchell that made the score 17-9.

3. DISCIPLINE ISSUES EVIDENT: The Bulldogs had 14 penalties for well over 100 yards, including some really foolish personal fouls, such as Mitchell for taunting a Florida defensive back after a catch and cornerback Devin Bowman slapping a Florida player on the helmet after a play was dead. In most games, that would cost them. Certainly, against Alabama, they wouldn’t get away with it.

Enjoyed the win. Fla has ZERO offense. Bama beats either of these teama with ease. Sorry…but true

Someone suggested Jarvis Jones for president. I submit SEAN Jones for president and Jarvis Jones for secretary of defense!

Wsa pretty windy in the first half when Murray threw those interceptions.

When the wind died down at halftime, Murray went to work.

Great to win, though ugly to watch. Nice to see AMurray throw darts in the fourth, after struggling whole game. Nice rebound by Mitchell. Incredible defensive effort all around. Believe FU is better than they looked today. Some of that was great D, but some was a third emotional game in a row. LSU-USCe-UGA is a tough month for anyone. Hard to maintain the edge. Just sayin’. Kudos to Grantham, and especially Williams, who should be DC of the week. Glad the team responded positively. Biggest question was where were the WRs and TEs all game. They’re not getting separation, and Murray usually had nowhere to throw. FU’s D is good, but their DBs are (usually) not great. They sure looked great tonight. Small complaints, to be sure, given the results. It’s disappointing, though, that it takes uber-emotion to get the team to play well. Extra emotion usually brings extra penalties, so you get what you got. Hope they can learn to play emotionally from snap to whistle and avoid the extracurricular. Jarvis for write-in! Go Dawgs!

Congrats dawgs a huge win for this program. However, this team better not get ahead of themselves.. Ole Miss is capable of pulling off the upset. Lot of folks assuming we are a shoe in for SEC title game, I hope the players don’t have that same attitude.

Big props to Todd Gurley today. The man had a tough second half, but the fact of the matter is that he wasn’t getting dropped for losses every time. He was getting 1, 2, or 3 yards on a lot of carries. That makes such a huge difference in terms of momentum. The Gators’ D never felt like they were dominating the line of scrimmage. That confused the hell out of them, so our young O-line deserves a hell of a lot of credit today. Great job.

10-2 is a good year! Right?

Watch Alabama if Mississippi State turns the ball over early multiple times. They will crush them into dust. The game will not be in doubt in the 4th quarter. There will not be multiple personal fouls or jaw-jacking with the other team. They will dominate because they are tough mentally and physically.

And when they win they won’t go jumping in the stands.

Georgia wins an ugly game gifted to them by Florida and the players go running for the stands like they won the SEC Championship.

DawginLex: Welcome back to the forum. We’ve missed you here, but I fully expected you to show up and crow about what a great game the ‘Dogs played today.
I told Stinger2 yesterday that I’d be on here to say I was wrong about the outcome–and the apparent preparation, at least for the U.Ga. defense, which played well for the entire game today.
As for the turning in of our diplomas, I have two, so I can spare one of those if it makes you feel any bigger about being able to say, “I told you so.”

Two of Murray’s pics he tried to thread the needle in good coverage and the ball got popped into the air. The third, he just badly overthrew… I don’t think the wind could be blamed on any of his bad throws; I didn’t see it that way, at least… Still, it’s a “W.”

When asked about the impact S. Williams had on the team–

Richt didn’t respond to the question.

SW did the team and the coaching staff a HUGE favor.
He showed some leadership.

Richt wouldn’t acknowledge it.

SW had fire and cared enough to call out his teamates.

Richt made him apologize for it.

This is why we suck in big games.

If this game had been for a national championship, you’d still see some fans/trolls complain about how the win being too ugly. At some point, in big games, the only thing that matters is whether you win or lose. When we’re playing Kentucky or Florida Atlantic or Georgia Southern or other teams like that, hell yeah, style points matter. When we’re playing the second-ranked team in the country, I do not give a damn about how good we look if we win.

Sometimes you gotta win sloppy. This game is played on emotion and we matched them and made a few more plays. We couldn’t underachieve on defense all year. We finally started smacking people around and if we got a few penalties along the way so be it.

Well, first off…UF was overrated.
Second, the gripe is not with a win looking bad.
It is with a team habitually underacheiving in big games.
It’s about a team who plays without discipline in big games.

The win was great. 10-11 wins are great.
But we can’t keep stinking it up on national TV when
We should at least compete in a big game.

The SC loss was the last straw for many alums.
Can’t take that kind of loss too many times.

Richt is responsible for it happening too often.
When the kids aren’t ready to play…he is responsible.

And by the way, style points always matter
win or lose
if you ever hope to play for the MNC.

for all of us wh can say ” WE TOLD YOU SO” This game was played at the line of scrimmage
It was old fashion football and proved that even without 600 yds of offense, this brand of football
is not only fun to play but to watch….A Murray one third his normal production and yet leads the first drive like a surgeon and the last like a GENERAL.. but the boys on the line on both sides of the ball
were the real story.. Somebody challenged their manhood and they put it on display today.. the old fashioned way..

Everybody remembers how important ERK was to the attitude of the JUNK YARD DAWGS..
Somewhere right now He ’s lighting up a CIGAR and telling L GRIZZARD “that was a game
worth watching”
Congratulations to the Guys, the Coaches, and all those who live and die for just these kind of victories SIC EM DAWGS

Kral:

We won this game because we had more points than the other team.
This win was very lucky.
UF played just a little worse than we did.
This was a big game where the team didn’t look fully prepared.
The players were undisciplined.
Had UF played the way they’d been playing
this would have been a blowout.

Big game–sure.
Big win–sure.
A game that exonerates the coaching staff–NO WAY.

Defense finally came to play, but same issues abound. Offense looks terrible- they don’t run the ball well. Murray can’t handle the big games. No discipline. They’ll lose to Ole Miss if they don’t fix the discipline and offensive line issues.

Yes, D won this game.
The O Line played better.

I agree we won in spite of Murray.
If the D hadn’t played lights out…we would have been humiliated again.
We were lucky to have more points the UF at the end.
We won in spite of the coaching staff’s ineptitude.

Jimmy, you are wasting your time, man. I saw the same game you did but you can’t tell the majority of people here anything different. Thank goodness for Jarvis Jones or else they might still be playing in OT.

I’m also tired of the lack of preparation and discipline on display most games. Today did nothing to convince me that problem has been fixed or that this team is coached to play to the level of their collective talent.

I am so glad we won and I do not want to “dump on the Dawgs” but – I am so sick of dumb penalites that show a lack of coaching control. The taunting and pushing etc, is so incredibly a sign of a poorly coached team. I have always tried to support CMR but today was embarrassing as far as player control. Having said that, Go Dawgs!!

First of all – I love this win – two in a row over the hated Gators – Wow…..were they over rated? C’mon – LSU was not rolling when they played – and SC gave the game away just like we did against them – having said that – they were a good defense but only an average offense. Jarvis Jones is a once in a generation type of player – enjoy him while you can. The defense we saw tonight is what we should have been seeing all year long – hopefully, they will realize that this team needs that kind of effort every week. Unfortunately, Murray still has the big game monkey on his back – a poor performance. Even the TD pass to Mitchell was more about Mithcell’s great after catch run than anything Murray did. He just gets rattled or something. Still, he’s a good QB and when he’s hot he’s unreal. He just needs to calm down. Discipline? Penalties? Both teams were rabid – look at it this way – if we would not have matched the insane level of adrenaline that Florida came out with we would have been steam rolled. Penalties and pushing and pulling in this game, with so much at stake was almost unavoidable. Having said that, we cannot afford to play in such a manner that we cost ourselves over a 150 yards in penalties and expect to win many games. The only saving grace was that Florida was just as amped and crazy as we were and so it offset. Some people will try and pooh pooh this win and say that we won because Florida played so poorly – hey man, that’s part of the game. You know Spurrier must be so ticked that he whooped us and then blew another run at the SEC east title by losing two in a row – the sad part for SC fans today was the loss of Lattimore. A very tragic injury. Prayers for the young mans complete and speedy recovery. Bottom line: WE BEAT THOSE EGG SUCKING GATORS FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW! I’ll take it any way it comes, baby! GO DAWGS!

Jimmy

I don’t think the team can play football with intensity
without being angry.

That’s what we saw tonight.
They had more penalties tonight than they’ve had in a couple of years.

When they play disciplined ball…they look flat against top 10 teams.
That is a coaching issue.
