Georgia will take an ugly win like this any time

Jarvis Jones had a monster game (three sacks, two forced fumbles) to lead Georgia. (Bob Andres/AJC)

Jarvis Jones had a monster game (three sacks, two forced fumbles) to lead Georgia. (Bob Andres/AJC)

Everybody is going to call it ugly. The quarterback was awful for most of the game. The opponent had six fumbles (four lost) and two interceptions. Two of the supposed best teams in the SEC swapped turnovers, penalties and dropped passes. If the late Sid Gillman was watching, he would’ve covered his eyes and screamed, “No! My eyes! My eyes!”

But does it matter?

Ugly is barely beating Kentucky after a bye week. Ugly is looking flawed against Buffalo and Florida Atlantic. Ugly is giving up 44 points to Tennessee. If beating the No. 2 team in the BCS — especially when it’s Florida — is considered ugly, it’s a canvas of ugly that the Bulldogs would wrap themselves in any day or night.

As Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray, he of the three first-half interceptions, said Saturday night, “I know I’m going to get stressed out when I look at the film. But it’s still a great win.”

Georgia, drop-kicked at South Carolina three weeks ago, seemingly comatose in the SEC and again floundering in a season of high hopes, rode ugly back to respectability Saturday. The 17-9 win over Florida put the Bulldogs in control in the SEC East. They need only beat Ole Miss and Auburn to secure a berth in the conference championship — and in the process stomped on all those can’t-win-the-big-one claims.

Malcolm Mitchell danced into the end zone with a big touchdown after Aaron Murray's pass beat the blitz. (Bob Andres/AJC)

The win had historical significance: It was the Dogs’ first time winning in consecutive years against Florida since 1988 and ’89. That’s long ago enough that the coach for that first game was Vince Dooley.

The game also had personal significance for Mark Richt. Battered for doing so poorly against top-10 teams (1-9 since 2008), the Georgia coach stayed on the field long after the game was over, going from one end of the stands to the other, celebrating with fans.

Winning this game last season, some believed, may have helped saved his job. Winning the game this season was even more significant because of the Gators’ stature.

Appropriately, it happened because of

Mark Richt was only 1-9 against top 10 teams since 2008 before the win. (AP photo)

Mark Richt was only 1-9 against top 10 teams since 2008 before Saturday.

defense, in general, and Jarvis Jones, in particular. Jones had three sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He knocked the ball loose from tight end Jordan Reed at the Dogs’ 18 with five minutes left, as Florida was moving in for a potential touchdown.

Jones’ amusing self-analysis: “I don’t know my stats, but I think I had a good game.”

The defense, whether motivated by external criticism or the internal slap from safety Shawn Williams, who called his team “soft,” had one of its better games of the season. Florida was held without a touchdown in a Georgia win for the first time since 1988.

Jones again: “I think what Shawn Williams did, he challenged us. Obviously we needed it. … Everybody was calling us names, calling us soft. ESPN, everybody on TV. Soft, soft, soft, soft, soft. As a man, you take it personal.”

Here’s a suggestion for Richt: Have one player call everybody a name every week. Couldn’t hurt.

Georgia led only 10-9 when Murray made amends for a mostly horrible night (12-of-24, three interceptions). On a third-and-5 from the Gators’ 45, he dropped back, beat blitzing safety Josh Evans and completing an 8-yard pass to Malcolm Mitchell. The receiver spun away from cornerback Loucheiz Purifoy and then cut across the field and ran to the end zone, giving the Dogs a 17-9 lead with seven minutes left.

The game’s only other touchdown — a 10-yard run by Todd Gurley — came early in the game following a Florida fumble. Of course. Florida had six fumbles (losing four) and six turnovers (Georgia three). The teams combined for six turnovers in the first half. They didn’t need marching bands — just the percussion section with the sounds of crashing cymbals with every bobble and misfire.

The Gators had only four turnovers in their first seven games. Yet quarterback Jeff Driskel fumbled on two of the first three plays of the game (Jones recovering the second). See, it doesn’t matter how ugly one team is if the other is worse.

Linebacker Jordan Jenkins said the team was inspired by a pregame speech by defensive end Cornelius Washington, who touched on all of the expected themes: no respect, big game, rival opponent.

“It was the craziest and wildest he’s ever been,” Jenkins said. “He was talking about how everybody was doubting us. He had us all pumped up and ready to go out there and knock some heads.”

Sometimes, that’s how games are won. The win is all anybody will remember.

I think the old man is smiling down on us tonight, the Dogs Defense comes up big in a victory over the Gators. Ga. Southern wins in triple overtime, and Tech sucked wind again today .

Sure Fla turned the ball over six times but I think that the Dogs defense had something to do with the florida miscues.

Yes, that amazing UGA defense that couldn’t stop anybody before this game turned into an NFL pro bowl team overnight, and forced Florida to turn the ball over on almost every play.

“Georgia wins an ugly game gifted to them by Florida and the players go running for the stands like they won the SEC Championship.”
_____________________________
Georgia forced all those interceptions and fumbles, all 6.

“Forced 6 turnovers but only produced 17 points….. Pathetic!”
_______________________________
Florida produced only 9 points.

“UF was overrated. The gripe is with a team habitually underacheiving in big games. It’s about a team who plays without discipline in big games. We can’t keep stinking it up on national TV when This win was very lucky. A game that exonerates the coaching staff–NO WAY.We should at least compete in a big game. The SC loss was the last straw for many alums. Style points always matter win or lose”
______________________________________
If you are going to criticize the team for under-achieving in big-games, then by God Above, you must man-up, walk onto this blog and state that we played with Great Heart on this Evening in JAX and beat Florida back-to-back 2011 and 2012 to ruin Will Muschamp’s seasons, both years, and this year they are # 2 and now their season is over. You can say that what some fans said to the team even you included if you want, or what a defensive secondary player said pre-game made the difference if you want – but By God Above, this football team was fully-engaged and inspiring. Stand up. Be a man. If you wanted us to win big games, then By God Above, qualifying to play # 1 Alabama and dream of Miami stands there staring you in the face. If you want us to accomplish some of these wins, then stand-up man-up and admit that this is our Best Win of the Mark Richt era. He is the coach and Aaron Murray the player who went out there and put the team on his back up 10-9 with 10 minutes to go. If you want our Georgia Bulldogs’ team to accomplish these things, then man-up and admit it straight-out : We Did It. Not you mealy-mouth B.S. here.

“Tough loss for my Gators. That last drive was exciting until the fumble…….ugh.”
_________________________________________________________
It should have been obvious from the get-go; can’t see how that is tough loss when you got beat; you got beat all night long; and, as for your last drive being exciting – yeah it was, until your Best Player got man-handled by our Most Celebrated Linebacker Ever in our Entire 120-year football history. He did not fumble. Jarvis Jones willed himself to your Best Player and he caught him from behind, and he wrapped his right arm around him just as he lunged himself toward the goal-line going airborne when he should have realized he had 2 minutes to go and put you within a Mike Gillislee run and subsequent 2-point try to send the game to over-time with all the momentum. Jarvis Jones took the ball from him at that moment. He did it to you all night long, and that is what sticks in your craw; not that your Best Player Fumbled. That was No Fumble; it was a STRIP and Tackle by our Jarvis Jones from right here in Atlanta.

“Alabama does not play football games like that.”
________________________________________
Alabama has not played a team this good all season long. What ? You don’t play emotional games like that ? Get off our blogs bragging how great Alabama is posting in here instead of watching your own team play a sorry Ole Miss team, who also has not beat anyone like we just beat, either. Ok, so we played with emotion. I am so sorry; that is exactly what we Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Program fans have called for, for years. We had what 14 penalties; so what; it is what won the game for us – playing with emotion, something we as fans and we as players on the team called ourselves out for all year.

“Aaron Murray sucks.”
_________________________
This is maybe the most disturbing of the posts. Excuse me. Don’t you want our Quarterback to succeed ? Do you think it is not obvious to the world that Florida could easily score a TD and beat us, us with the ball with 10 minutes to go on yet another give the ball back to the Offense. Key Moment in the Game ? What do you want ? I want us to play hard and try. I watched as Aaron Murray when on that field where the Gator Bowl is played 4th Quarter up by 1 point 10 minutes to go and will the team to Victory by Putting The Entire Team on His Shoulders. He tried a Todd Gurley rush; that was stuffed; and he threw a pass every other play to win the game 17-9. I don’t know what you watched because you did not say this. I did.

“Georgia is not by any means a great team.”
__________________________________
So, what is a great team ? A great team is a team such as Florida who beat Texas A and M, beat LSU and beat South Carolina. You cannot sit there and say that those 3 teams they beat does not make Florida a great team. Sure it does. It is the very essence of this sport, beating great teams. Guess what ? We have a better win than your Alabama team, son.

“Can’t crown the Dogs SEC Champs for a sloppy game and win over UF. The Dogs won’t win the SEC with Murray’s performances, but it maybe good enough to back into another SEC East Division title. Spurrier still had a harder SEC schedule than Richt. Too bad for the Cocks.”
___________________________________
I have 2 heart-felt responses to this post. Let me take care of this B.S. of yours first, then the real response. One : I am sorry you see the game as a sloppy one. What happened was a welling up of emotions for a Georgia Program just desperate to prove we are and you ain’t a Top 10 All-Time Football Program. We took the ball from Florida and handed it to our offense who faced a Top 5 Defense who have stifled Texas A and M, stifled LSU, and stifled South Carolina – uh, that’s you. They obliterated your sorry butts 44-11. 17-9 is not sloppy. 17-9 is a Brilliant Performance by our Guys who Won big-time on the Big-Boy Stage, the Whole World Watching. When your QB takes the ball in the 4th quarter and wills your team to a win over Florida, let me know ? That, then, is NOT backing-into The SEC Championship Game. That is taking the Bull by the Horns and beating Florida while you did not. We played you and lost and we played Florida and Won – something you failed to do. I personally did not root for Florida last week, but you – I hate Florida that much. Two : Let me say on a personal note, just how in tears I am personally about my great hero Marcus Lattimore whom I Love and cannot wait to see the day when he can walk again. Marcus, you are a fine young man and everything you stand for is everything that I Love about college football. I am heartbroken about Marcus Lattimore on a day I can’t really talk about anything else.

#2, 7, 8, and 9 all lost. Georgia should move to 6TH or 7TH. I hate the popularity that Notre Dame is getting because they get away with not playing a Conference Championship, which in my opinion should guarantee they will never get higher than 4TH or 5TH.

I knew we win against Judas Muschump. He don’t know how to coaching at all. Coach Richt owns him. Now that the bad fans can shut up and eat crow. Dawgs need to enjoy East champs and then get ready for BCS. We now won 5 east with Coach Richt and he not goning to be hot sitted by bad fans. We can focus on winning out and taking BCS champs. Remaining teams is stinky losers and then we take down that Saban and Bammers to claim BCS champs. But first got to sleep off party down here in Jax. And then wake up to Dawgs top 5 again.

We should be # 6. We have a better win than # 1, # 2, # 3, # 4, and same as # 5 LSU who has to play # 1 Alabama next and Ole Miss and Missy State, while we play Ole Miss, @ Auburn, Georgia Southern, then Georgie tek. Ole Miss has beat no one all season, long.

Oregon is not winning out playing @ Southern California next, @ California, Stanford, @ Oregon State.

Alabama has now @ LSU, followed by Texas A and M. Then, Western Carolina, Auburn, then us.

KSU. Oklahoma’s loss to Notre Dame hurts Kansas State. Kansas State has Okie State, @ TCU, Baylor, Texas.

Notre Dame has no win like our win over Florida. And, their only remaining game with no ACC Championship Game they get to play looks no good now to end their season against Southern California. That game is now ruint.

These are the Top 6 teams in the BCS. We do control our own destiny. And, that is because we beat Florida by taking the ball from them 6 times, an all-time record against Florida, ever.

I’m a realist. Florida was not the #2 team in the country, maybe we were on paper but not on grass. We have won more games this year than I thought we would. Our defense is very good and played very well on Saturday. Our offense is below average and played very poorly on Saturday. We have no playmakers, our line has problems protecting the QB, and it appears we only have one running back that can be productive because we only play one kid.
Saturday we had 6 TO’s, 10 penalties, no passing game, and no telling how many QB sacks and hurries, and two blown scoring opportunities in the red zone.
If you are the #2 team in the country you don’t play like that, and you certainly don’t play that way against a good team and expect to win.
Muschamp has done a great job but the bottom line is we played bad a got beat and the Dawgs played lights out on D and got the win. Congrats to Georgia.
Life goes on!

There are no other Jarvis Jones names on any other team. Best of luck on a great year. We’re counting on you for that against Florida State. I have waflled all over the board on Florida 2012 from saying you lose 4 or more games to saying you’re not a very good team, to now hoping you go 13-1. For the entire season before game week, I predicted a win over Florida by us and even assumed it. There is not a damn thing wrong with being 12-1. You have nothing to be ashamed of. No one can stop Jarvis Jones # 1 NFL Draft Pick Butkus Award Winner, Lombardi Trophy Winner, SEC Player of the Week, SEC Player of the Year, Georgia-Florida Hall of Fame, Lott IMPACT Trophy Award Winner, Chuck Bednarik Award Winner, College Football Hall of Fame member, and Bronko Nagurski Award to along with his already Consensus All-America Awards annually.

SEC FOOTBALL, what you’re asking is are we going to play with intensity against SEC West Opponent SEC CG and BCS game after that, because we have our win over now today # 7 Florida who has themselves wins over Texas A and M, LSU and South Carolina 2 of those over Top 10 teams and one not that far behind that now. Our win stacks up better than any of the 5 teams ahead of us, except for LSU who has had a better season than us so far – but, LSU is the only team who has a win as good as our win.

Most Valuable Player – Jarvis Jones
Most Valuable Leader – Shawn Williams

Maybe Williams could have been more politically correct, but football ain’t bean bag and he is an Econ major, not a communications major. However, he couldn’t have been more of a leader – a position we have been lacking since Pollack played at UGA. Even seemed to get Richt energized.

Now give the same effort the next four weeks and we see how the chips fall in the Dome. GATA

Great win for the UGA team and fans no matter how it occurs:

THE GOOD AND THE BAD:

THE GOOD: It is very apparent that Aaron Murray has been holding the UGA football program hostage. A Murray is terrible QB and no telling what our teams could achieve with a different QB

THE BAD: We have to watch Aaron Murray again in 2013 and the same gripes and problems will continue with this kid. It is not Bobo, Murray sux as a QB.
