Aaron Murray can quiet a lot of critics if he leads Georgia past Florida. (AP photo)
ATHENS – Have you heard? The Georgia quarterback can’t play in big games. He can’t beat great teams. He melts in big moments. He is 0-4 against top 10 teams, 2-8 against ranked teams. He lost to South Carolina. Twice. He’s no David Greene, no D.J. Shockley and he sure ain’t no Buck Belue.
This is how the story about Aaron Murray gets spun. Not that he has thrown 75 touchdown passes in 2½ years, or that he threw for over 400 yards the week after his father had cancer surgery, or that Georgia has won six games this season not in spite of its quarterback but because of him — because the six wins certainly can’t be attributed to special teams or the soft-as-nougat defense (paraphrasing Shawn Williams).
Here is the problem with “the book” on Murray. It’s short-sighted. It’s the cheap-and-easy pop that goes an inch deep instead of Butts-Mehre-wide. The 0-4 and 2-8 records technically are accurate. But that’s a program statement. Since 2008 – two seasons before Murray started a game — Georgia is 1-9 against top 10 teams and 6-14 against top 25s. Does Murray get blamed for that, too, or is that on coach Mark Richt and his staff?
We do this with quarterbacks. They’re the lightning rods. They’re the can’t-win-the-big-game guys until schleps like John Elway or Peyton Manning win Super Bowls, and then we move on to the next guy. We look at a guy like Murray leading four second-half touchdown drives in the loud, zoo-like surroundings at Missouri and think, “OK, that was impressive.” But then Missouri devolves into an 0-4 conference newbie and we think, “OK, that wasn’t a big deal.”
This week it’s Florida. Murray was asked the inevitable question of trying to win the big game. He responded appropriately: “I just ignore it. I’m not playing Florida myself.”
I imagine his psychology degree and post-graduate work has enabled him to remove the emotion from the process in matters like this.
On Florida again: “You can’t go in there stressed. I have to be positive in my thoughts and let her rip. Sometimes, maybe I try to be too perfect or too cautious, thinking about not throwing an interception. My goal this week is to trust my abilities, trust my preparation and just go out there and let it rip.”
Georgia has only one edge over Florida. It’s at quarterback and nowhere else.
Murray is better than Jeff Driskel. He has thrown for more yards (1,914 to 929) and more touchdowns (16 to 8). But Driskel doesn’t play on a team that has underachieved relative to its perceived talent level. He has benefited from the Gators having a great defense. The Gators physically beat two highly ranked teams, LSU and South Carolina, so nobody is questioning their quarterback’s leadership or resolve.
Murray is not the same kid who looked unnerved in Jacksonville two years ago. He was intercepted on the Dogs’ first play, committed two more turnovers in the second quarter that led to Florida touchdowns and threw third interception (fourth turnover) in overtime, enabling the Gators to win 34-31.
“He was just a young quarterback who made some freshman mistakes,” senior Marlon Brown said. “But he’s overcome that.”
Last season’s meeting was better but still not great. He completed only 15 of 39 and had an early interception, but he threw a pair of fourth-down touchdown passes and led the Bulldogs to a 24-20 win.
“People ask do you get a little nervous for Florida? I’m not nervous. Since that first year, once the game gets going I don’t worry about all the extra stuff any more.”
He has evolved as a leader, fortunately in a less combustible way than Shawn Williams (who might’ve been on target when he labeled his team’s defense “soft” but he effectively threw teammates under the bus when he mandated lineup changes).
Murray has taken a more cerebral approach in his leadership than Williams. His graduate work in industrial-organizational psychology led him to study the qualities of NFL quarterbacks like Tom Brady. For one project, he surveyed teammates and coaches on where they believed he fell short as a leader. Their feedback: Murray needed to be more vocal. So he has been this season, without cutting off anybody at the knees.
“In some instances I need to be more demanding and vocal,” he said. “I have to make sure guys are accountable.”
He was beat up physically and emotionally recently. Georgia had lost to South Carolina. His house was egged by lunatics. His father underwent surgery. He even got a speeding ticket driving back to Athens from Florida following the bye week. But he tried to stay upbeat publicly.
“Fake it ’til you make it, I guess,” he said. “Especially as the quarterback, I have to make sure I have a high energy level. Running around, screaming and yelling and having fun, making sure guys see that I’m ready to go.”
It’s opportunity week. Georgia can take control in the SEC East. Murray can put to rest criticism about big-game performances. Quarterbacks are defined by games like this, fair or unfair. Here’s Murray’s chance to rewrite “the book.”

Georgia’s only advantage is a QB? Really! The best DT, Jenkins….ILB, Ogletree….OLB, Jones……Advantage UGA at RB and WR as well. I don’t have wait until Saturday to say I told you so…..If the Dawgs protect the ball they’ll win soundly! They’ll be ready.

Not every good college quarterback becomes an NFL player of note…too many examples to begin to list. I have not been convinced on Murray for years…but HE is not the problem this year. He had a crap game against S Carolina. That may have had something to do with a 6′5″ defensive end knocking him around all night. Its a team sport…no one person or play is gonna win or lose the game. When Georgia plays good as a team they are great! I like that the D has been called out…they need to step it up and so does the O line. I just want to see these guys, as always, play to their potential, play smart, and PLAY WITH HEART!!!! GO DAWGS!!!!

0-10 vs teams who made the top 25
2 more losses to teams who did not make any top 25 poll
Are we to move on to the next quarterback who cannot win the big game if Aaron Murray beats Florida ?
Or, will Aaron Murray then be :
1-10 vs teams who made the top 25
2 more losses to teams who did not make any top 25 poll.

Murray is a better passer for sure, but do not forget Driskel has serious speed and is a big guy. The quarterback position is not the only one we have the advantage. We have MUCH better receivers. Florida does not have a single receiver who could play in the NFL. Their tight is very good though.

People can talk all they want about Murray choking in big games, and clearly he has not been as good. That’s obvious. But how many of those games did Murray have even decent pass protection? It’s different if Murray has guys in his face when throwing against a team rushing 7 guys. but when the team rushes 4 or 5 and our offensive line is too slow or bad to stop them, how do you expect him to succeed? Murray almost always plays great when given time to throw. No one can say I’m wrong unless he actually gets the time. Aaron is far from being a Peyton Manning or Drew Brees throwing the football. But just give the guy some time to throw. The o-line gets hammered in big games. Are you going to blame Gurley as well for “choking” against the Gamecocks? The o-line gave him no blocking either.

On defense, I’d say if Jones is healthy, he can be a difference maker in this game.
On offense, Gurshall can be the difference makers if offensive line plays better.

Jeff, this is kind of a lost column. I don’t hear anyone saying FLA will beat ga because the Driskel is better than Murray.
I do hear that FLA will beat ga because of better lines, better coaching and better defense. And that is accurate.

The jilted-girlfriend obsession that commenter “Thomas Brown” seems to have with Aaron Murray is a little scary. But his off-hand comment at @10:20 slagging CMR for supposedly letting things slide since CMR’s wife had cancer in 2006 is just plain sick.
It’s fine to be a cynical, never-played-a-D1-down, know-it-all anonymously griping from behind a pseudonym-that-expresses-who-I-really-am, confusing the ability to collect statistics off the internet with an actual understanding of the game. Because, after all, that’s what sports are for.
But, dude, where’s your humanity? Take a breath, get a life… and hope the real Thomas Brown never finds out what you’re doing with his name.

Wrong about A Murray =
Stack the box on the UGA offense. Stand tall in the passing lanes just over the offensive tackles outside shoulders, create push up the middle and Aaron Murray is bad, MURRAY IS TO SHORT TO SEE TO BEAT QUALITY TEAMS —
Quit blaming the offensive line when the QB is the problem against quality teams
**************************************
Bet Murray has less balls tipped then the 6′5″ Mett…you throw in lanes, you don’t throw over 6′5″ DE’s with their arms up in the air, making them what at least 8′ tall…

Hate to say it but UGA is not going to win this game unless they play error free and Gators gift wrap it for them. I would love to see UGA turn it around but have seen no signs of this happening. Florida is playing consistent and UGA is not. Jacksonville is not a neutral site. Gators by 14.

STEPHEN A.DOGG : Richt's offense is stereotyped !.
October 24th, 2012
12:08 am
Jeff, I think Richt’s offense with O-lineman is stereotyped beyond repair. No 5-star or four-star linemen with pro hopes will play in Richt’s pass first offense. The O-line in the trenches is the point where Richt’s teams are constantly beaten by more talent, better coached ranked opponents. Richt grabs the leftovers of available O-linemen to create patchwork, sub par UGA O-lines. Seems like they are more taught to get in the way than to block. Real O-linemen with pro ability go to places like Bama, LSU, USCw, or Oklahoma to play for coaches that make them better and increase their future pro stock, in much better offensive systems than what Richt has at UGA. It’s easy for opposing coaches to out-recruit mundane Richt in getting the most talented O-lineman because of his finesse offense and lack of coaching up players in big game. Williams was right about the defense being soft, but Richt’s O-lines are soft too, and get “whipped” in big games.

As much as I want Georgia to win Saturday and as big a fan as I am, are you crazy. We have no advantage over Florida. Their QB can run for over a hundred yards a game as well as pass. Florida is hands down the better team. However, if we play the way we are capable of playing, we can make it interesting.

Interesting that there is NO quote from Mark Richt in this huh? Yes it is. EVERYBODY knows Bradley has an apparent disdain for Richt and certainly has written scores of negative columns about Richt, almost like trying to put the nail in Richts coffin. I dont blame Richt. Bradley is a divider and needs to go on vacation every couple weeks because hes fair instead of brutal then. I dont blame Richt for not caring much for Bradley. It is apparent to most people with half a brain that Bradley is overly critical and has at times flooded the market with anti-Richt slanted columns.
The pen is mightier than the sword they say. Not in ALL situations and not in this one. Richt is still at UGA and probably has a longer contract than Bradley, makes much more money and has many more friends and admirers. And hes much better looking I will add(as if I needed to).
I love how Braley implied Richt and the coaches were the problem when Cox was QB and there was not any great backs or blocking or defense either. Nice one Bradley. You are not mighty enough. You cannot create enough rabid, young, ignorant fans chatter to get Richt gone. He is a man of integrity, strength, self-assuredness, and many more superlatives.
Mark Richt IS a ROCK and he WILL be appreciated for being a GREAT coach and for the ROCK that he is one day and one day soon.
It took almighty Saban 11 years to win a NC and most other coaches much longer to win their first NC…Richts 11th year. SHOULD have won one in 07 BUT didnt get the chance Bama got last year. Had a couple down years and still DONT have an OL. Woooo. Hes just terrible.
Took Bear Bryant 18 years to win it all. People think he was a pretty good coach dont they? Hmmmm. Good thing they didnt fire him after 12 years! or 9, 10 or 11! Richt is NOT going anywhere and NOR SHOULD he.
I wouldnt answer any questions by columnists that were constant critics and a hater basically. What benefit would that serve? To a divider? Divide and conqueror? You nor Schultz will conquer Richt.
You would have tried to got Bear Bryant, Dooley, Bowden, Brown, Paterno even fired too because their first 10 years were all much worse than Richts and most by FAR.
You would have tried to fire Paterno too even though his first 10 were among the top, if not the top in history of a first time coach…..FYI., Richt has been JUST as good. Dont get stuck in the moment or in what hasnt yet culminated….or you MIGHT FIRE BEAR BRYANT!
Prepare for rain REAL Dog fans….the drought will soon be over! The NC is coming. Big wins are coming. Prepare for rain! 1 year ago they were firing him any day…He went to the SEC championship game! Dont expect so much after being so down so recently! The Dog has turned! We ARE on the rise. Even if we dont win the SEC or NC now! The foundation is laid. The future is better in the next 10 than the last 10!
Its OUR TIME. ITS RICHTS TIME. This is the time when MOST ALL HEAD COACHES WIN THEIR FIRST NC! Dont BELEIVE THE HATERS…..
THEY ARE YOUNG AND SO DUMB! AND WE ARE ON THE PATH TO POSSIBLE SEVERAL CHAMPIONSHIPS OVER THE NEXT 10 YEARS!
IM RIGHT. THE HATERS ARE NOT.

The o-line gets hammered in big games. Are you going to blame Gurley as well for “choking” against the Gamecocks?”
______________________________________________
Todd Gurley in the South Carolina game was given a grand total of 15 touches in the football game, including all punt returns, all kick-off returns, all passes, and all rushes. In his career here at Georgia, Todd Gurley is averaging 7 yards per carry running the football.
Aaron Murray, a freakishly small SEC Quarterback, in his career here at Georgia has had 205 rushes in 34 games, which is over 6 carries per game. Aaron Murray has 248 yards of rushing, an average of 1 yards per carry.
You are the very same poster, given any opportunity to, who would tell this midget choking quarterback, that he should tuck the ball and take off.
You are the very same poster who told us all what a great dual-threat quarterback Aaron Murray is. You want to see a dual-threat Quarterback ? Jeff Driskel over 321 yards on just 66 carries this year at Florida; far superior than Aaron Murray and 5 yards a carry by direct comparison. 5 times better than Aaron Murray.
Who was the better quarterback head-to-head, you tell me ? Connor Shaw or Aaron Murray was the better quarterback in that game ? How about the LSU game last season, who was the better quarterback ? Aaron Murray ? Who was the better quarterback in the Michigan State bowl game ? Who was the better quarterback, head-to-head in the Boise State game ? Has Aaron Murray had the better game any of his 3 Losses to South Carolina than their QB ? Colorado game, who was the better quarterback head-to-head on the field that day ? UCF game ? Arkansas with Ryan Mallett ? Missy State with Chris Relf ? Cam Newton ?
Quit making excuses for the little guy. He has not been the better quarterback head-to-head on the field that day, even, in 12 games to-date. We LOST all 12 of those games. He was not the better quarterback in ANY of those 12 LOSSES.
Aaron Murray has been sacked 68 times in 34 games. He holds on to the damn football too long. He NEVER throws the ball away. He stands back there for 10 seconds trying to throw the football down the field. He does not get 1st Downs. He does not lead this offense. It is his running which is a DRAG on our running game. His. Not Todd Gurley’s.
Aaron Murray has 27 Fumbles, trying to run the football. And, still you want him to take off and go running. The SEC DL are ALL a lot faster than he. You see them, and he sees them. He takes off, and they run him down from behind. 300 lbs SEC DL run him down. He is at best 4.81 in the 40-yard “dash.” He has NO SPEED. He has no size. He is puny. 27 Fumbles in 34 games, to-date with more 3 days from now. Mark my Words.
Aaron Murray has 26 interceptions in 34 games.
Aaron Murray calls his own number on every play. He is a ball hog. He tries to do too much. He refuses to throw the ball away. He eats the football. If we need a 1st Down, he will call plays, or check-out of plays at the line of scrimmage having now been here since December 2008 practicing with this team, to his own number. It is what he does.
He cannot see over the OL and DL.
He cannot sprint to his left or right and see an open lane between the OL and DL.
His balls are tipped at the line of scrimmage, because like a long field goal, he backs up and tries to throw the ball over the guys a foot taller than he and cannot.
What the problem with this Top 10 All-Time Football Program are fans like you running in here to tell us how great Aaron Murray or some other guy, or Mark Richt is. Instead, you should join-up and say what DawgNole said last night. That what is wrong with Florida is ALL THE HYPE ABOUT HOW GREAT THEY ARE COMING INTO THIS GAME. It will be their downfall, he states. If it is WRONG to hype Florida players, because they will lose as a direct result, then it is just as wrong for you to come running in here telling Aaron Murray, oh, everything is all right. It’s not your little fault, poor little guy. It’s EVERYONE ELSE’S FAULT, BUT YOURS AARON MURRAY.
It’s ok. Go out there and do your best. Try to beat big bad Florida. It’s not little Aaron Murray’s fault that Georgia has lost 10 games in a row to SEC teams who put-up a winning SEC Record. It’s not little Aaron Murray’s fault that Georgia has lost to 16 of the last 18 games against teams who made the top 25. It’s not little Aaron Murray’s fault that Georgia has lost 14 of the last 17 games against teams who made the top 10.
_____________________________________________________________________
IT’S JUST THAT AARON MURRAY HAS NOT WON ANY OF THOSE GAMES. NONE.

Its the offensive structure. There aren’t enough roll out plays where the QB can have time to throw—————and of course UGA never runs the ball enough to make the opposing defense tired———–Richt will not be around for ever and one day UGA will get a great coach not an average coach. Not saying Richt is not a good person———-but things just never add up —year after year after year======

Mark Richt has not done anything in football since the day Kathryn Richt was diagnosed with Cancer. For good reason. He doesn’t care that senior Shawn Williams has to run to the press to say we play soft and the coaches do not play the right players. We all know that. How can a Top 10 Football Program All-Time in Wins have lost 10 games in a row to SEC teams who put-up a Winning SEC Record ? How can we have lost 16 of the last 18 games to teams making top 25 ? How can he have lost 14 of the last 17 games who made the top 10 ? Because he doesn’t care anymore. It’s just not relevant. How can he do nothing about running the damn football every big game, except for Georgie tek in 2009 who ended up # 13 and who would have had to VACATE the win had they beat Mark Richt ? How can a Top 10 All-Time Football Program in wins # 6 in the nation in attendance and # 1 in the nation in profits, in this state with 3 other states who send more of their high school players to the NFL, have only 66 scholarship recruits plus 1 transfer-in to play South Carolina and Florida, the only 2 games on a schedule Greg McGarity brought with him from Florida ranked the # 108 strength of schedule for all 12 games ? How can any of this be ? How can he have 29 players transfer-out or flunk-out or be kicked-out or be forced-out to get us in the mess ? How can everyday be nothing but bad press for my alma mater ? How can 8 SEC teams have done better in the Mark Richt era than Mark Richt at beating teams who made the top 10 all 12 years now ? How can the players run the show at UGA ? How could Willie Martinez last that long ? How could Mike Bobo still be here with his pass-happy offense ? How could Florida hire D.J. Durkin as Special Teams Coach and Mark Richt tell us all these walk-ons we see watching the ball dribble down to the goal line and fair-catching kick-offs with no one around them for 30-yards and all these walk-ons allowing all these kick-off returns and punt returns against us, will not be playing and instead he will play all starters ? How do you let this continue ? Oh, Joe Cox is our best quarterback. Oh, Joe Tereshinski III is our best quarterback. Oh, they BOTH are better than Matthew Stafford. Oh, this guy who got blown-up on every play against South Carolina walk-on Merritt Hall a linebacker be our Fullback when we had for 6 consecutive recruiting classes until this year watched as 200 fullbacks were recruited by every other college football team, and none by us ? 6 years in a row no Fullback and now we recruited 6′ 3″ 255 lbs Quayvon Hicks for the 1st time in 6 years, and Mark Richt plays some walk-on blown-up on every play and fair-catching kick-offs because they don’t want to kick to Todd Gurley ? How ? Because he doesn’t care. It’s not important to him anymore. It doesn’t matter in the scheme of life, anymore. How could he publically berate Todd Grantham and tell the Defensive Coordinator he hired and pays one million dollars a year that he cannot show any emotion on the sidelines ever again ? How can we be # 94 in the nation in penalties ? How can we be # 49 in the nation at making 1st Downs ? How can we have the # 50 Defense ? How can none of our secondary be able to cover a single receiver a single time ? How can the # 100 offense run the ball right up our guts, all game long from the opening kick-off to the last play of the game ?

Oh, it’s wrong to point out that Mark Richt doesn’t care anymore ? Really ? Look this is my football program I spend $ 10,000 a year on. Me. I’ve been to JAX more than all the rest of you combined. My seasons’ tickets and my Dad before me, I pay for. I go to the bowl games. I have been to more of our bowl games than all of you combined. You brag daily in here to me that you don’t even go to the games.
Stats ? Stats ? Stats ?
Presumably since you say you have NO ISSUES with any of my 7 points about this football program, my stats are spot-on correct to the tee. We have an out-of-control football program. It’s Mark Richt’s fault, not Aaron Murray’s that he has not prepared a back-up Quarterback for us since 2004. 2004 was nine (9) years’ ago. If you think this 2012 season does not count, then why have you been in here as your handle posting all year here, telling us that Florida and Will Muschamp the Jury is Still Out On while they have beat LSU and South Carolina, 2 of the last 3 teams Mark Richt has lost to.
National Championship Mark Richt, Columbus ?
DISNEYdawgs.com
LSU beat 3 teams who made the top 10 and Alabama beat 2 teams who made the top 10 and the National Championship was determined between them. Duh.
Instead of sitting there and bragging how we’re going to win the national championship, why don’t you tell the guys like Erk Russell did in my days to get out there, and GATA.
Instead of censoring posts you don’t like, and allow your posts which are all nothing but FLAME posts flaming a poster who came in here to tell you that you are what is wrong with this football program anymore settling for all this on and off the field BAD PRESS every day for 12 years, why don’t you sit there and dream up something POSITIVE TO SAY YOURSELF ?
Because you are NOT CAPABLE OF IT.
That’s why. Because there is NOTHING POSITIVE about our football program right now, including ESPECIALLY AARON MURRAY and Mark Richt, neither of whom can beat their way out of a wet-paper bag against good teams – nor you to a poster who tells it like it is.

Wow, surely the Gators are going to get surprised because no one outside of Georgia’s borders knows anything about Aaron Murray. No way anyone else heard that he was SEC offensive player of the week. Also Muschamp has a really short memory, because last year at the beginning of the season, he promised to beat GA. But yeah, he’s probably forgotten all about that. And since UGA ys still believe that if you win this game you are playing in the NCG, you really are the only ones with anything to gain with a W. It’s a lock. UGA y 45 UF 3.

Murray usually looks poised and confident right up to the point where something goes wrong. If he takes a sack or two, he appears to start hearing footsteps and gets panicky. All it takes is a lost fumble or an intercepted pass and he completely loses it.

It is the offensive line that can’t hold out the defenders not Murray. About every bad team Tech included have great offenses now days. NC State had Wilson a couple of years ago, beat Tech like a drum. No local press figured out they were watching the best quarterback in this part of the country, until he left NC State and went to another school to finish his career. Murray is not as good as Wilson but he is pretty good. I don’t see that line holding for him, he will be throwing off his heels a lot in this game. He will take the blame, because no one noticed the duress that OL puts him under.

Observer,
Even if he does not Fumble his 27th Fumble as our QB, and even if he does not throw his 28th Interception as our QB, and even if he does not get sacked for his 59th sack as our QB, he still cannot run the football and he will have 6 carries he steals from Todd Gurley in the game for his 1-yard a carry. It is what he does. And, he will hold on to the football. And, no one else will be brought in, no matter how rattled he gets. And, he still will have his passes tipped at the line. Why is it that his passes are tipped at the line, and no one else’s ? Why does he check-out of every playcall to his own number ? Why does he never throw the ball away ? Why, when Gurshall gain 8 yards on 1st Down, does he always throw 2 incompletions to go 3 and out and never make a 1st Down ?

Silly, me, why would I expect you to come in here and talk about our team ? No. All you want to do is to talk about me. Excuse me, I didn’t lose 10 consecutive games to top teams.

Simpson – Murray’s whole career has led up to this moment? Seriously? He craps the bed against ranked opponents, just like his coaching staff.

This game reminds me of the game I think was in 06 win the unranked Dawgs and Matt Stafford went into #4 Auburn and smacked them in the mouth. No way was Georgia supposed to win that game. No way is Georgia suppose to win this one. Richt needs a marquee win badly. Otherwise, fans start to get really nasty. He might be the first ever UGA coach fired for winning

Schultz is an idiot and has no knowledge of FB. Georgia is better at most skill positions than Florida or other teams. But the OL is weaker and the DL is underperforming– with injuries.
The writer either needs to study FB or write about something else.
