Pessimism reigns by Georgia fans about Florida game (video added)

Remember how high optimism was about Georgia football before this season? Well, that seems to have eroded.

The recent loss to South Carolina, several unimpressive victories – including the latest win at Kentucky — and a perceived talent-loaded defense that hasn’t nearly lived up to expectations has led to many Georgia fans expecting the worst when the Bulldogs face Florida in Jacksonville next Saturday.

Who will win the Georgia-Florida game?

How do I know this? Because when I relayed via Twitter that Florida was anywhere from a 3½ to 4½ point favorite at most sportsbooks, the responses could all be reduced down to these three words: “Is that all?”

In fact, as I type this, I have yet to find a reader who would take that bet (Georgia plus the points).

Georgia is 3-8 against Florida under Mark Richt, including last year’s win. But Florida is 7-0, ranked No. 2 in the BCS standings and destroyed South Carolina 44-11.

On Betonline.com, the Gators opened as 3½ point favorites, the line dropped to 3, then went up to 4½. Vegasinsider.com lists the consensus line at 3.5. The Las Vegas Wynn opened with Florida at 4½ and it went up to 5.

Here is the early feedback on the point spread. Feel feel to weigh in below with your thoughts and I’ve put up a simple poll question: Does Georgia win or lose?

Your responses on Twitter

“That ain’t enough Jeff. It should be at least 7.5.” — @pierceoutlaw

“I agree. I’d say gators by 10. I’m a Dawg fan. Hoping for the best but expecting the worst like most Cocktail Party endings.” — @NikkiFree

“How often are the guys in and around Vegas are wrong? Personally, I do think it is low.” — @vsu96sdd

“Surprised it’s not 14.” — @jltdawg

• “Should be gators by 14.5 the way the dawgs defense has been playing. #fromadawgfantoo” — @Zack_H_Martin

• “UGA fan here. I would’ve guessed Fla -6.5. Wouldn’t take the dawgs at +7.” — @Hookey12

• ” What’s the over/under? I think it needs to be 7.5, but I could see them winning 42-35. They will hang 35+ on our D.” — @Litigatingdawg

• “It’ll be bet up closer to -4.5 or 5 by Saturday.” — @ParrishWalton

• “Casinos are smart & in the business of making money. They made the line low so people will bet on #UGA, the sure loser.” — @UGABugKiller

UGA cannot beat the good teams

October 22nd, 2012
12:28 pm

Someone on here said earlier that UGA fans expect to be undefeated every year, and should be “thankful for what we have”,
We are thankful, but expect this team to play up to its potential. And it has not this year. The problem goes back to coaching, ultimately. The talent level is there; team should be able to beat the top-ranked teams, and they have not. That is why UGA fans are pessimistic about FLA game. CMR appeared tired and weary of questions after Kentucky game. He is really going to be tired of questions, if they lose to Gators…. But keep the faith…

“The AJC, Bradley and Schultz constant criticism and scrutiny keeps the best players from Georgia going elsewhere. Who would blame them. Florida has built a solid team their fans can be proud of. We have a collection of great players but due some weak areas we can’t measure up against the best teams. What happenned to our defense…that’s the big disappointment to me. Go Dawgs.”

Let me make sure I understand this georgedawg. Isn’t it great coming in here and posting to a thread of 1000 people posting about Georgia ? You can have your say. Whatever you say.

(1) georgedawg, you say that we can’t beat the best teams
(2) georgedawg, your excuse is we don’t have the talent

On your point # 1, you certainly are right on that :

We’ve lost 16 of the last 18 games against teams making the top 25
We’ve lost 14 of the last 17 games against teams making the top 10

(2) On your point # 2 :

NFL Drafted by each Team Mark Richt era :

No, if UGA wins, I will say they are finally playing to the talent level they have. But we take nothing for granted this year. Every game seems to be a complete mystery as to how they are going to play.

“Our lack of motivation on defense will doom us against Fla. Murray usually plays poorly in big games, and the Gators will give us a supreme butt whipping in the line of scrimmage (both sides). We need some intensity and passion from our coach, and to get an early lead (and not turn the ball over) in order to have any chance.”
___________________________________________
1. lack motivation on defense
2. Aaron Murray wets his legs against good teams
3. we don’t coach our players to be tough in the trenches
4. sleepy coach laughing it up in horrible game with KY isn’t what you want
5. jump out to a big lead
6. don’t turn the football over

Fix ALL that to have any chance at all.

If a bullfrog had wings, he wouldn’t have to bump his buns on the rocks and we’d still have horrible special teams, and don’t as a program any longer, beat the top teams at the same clip every other SEC team does in the entire Mark Richt era.

Are we pessimistic ? I think there is a loud contingency in the minority who want to shut us all up and say they speak for all of us when they say we’ll win. Just don’t read their posts, because they say the same as all of us but are the 1st to say, ban this poster, delete this post, only allow positive statements, don’t allow pessimistic posts – and, then you read their posts and they say the same, if not worse than you just said bruce benedict.

Always enjoy your posts bruce benedict.

I’m a die-hard Ga fan all my life and this team is a huge disappointment. Not in wins, one loss isn’t a deal breaker, but the manner in which we lose and win is abysmal. Even teams that are far less talent wise are able to gash us time and again up the middle with the run. THere were times in the Kentucky game where they showed replays of their runs up the middle with the camera angle from beind the runner and there were absolutley no Bulldogs on the frontline in sight, Nowhere! THey had all been pushed to the periphery and the middle was wide smack open. Can’t imagine that we can stay within 4 touchdowns of FLA.

The fact that we do not have an SEC caliber line, and that the good teams will whip us up front is NOT an indication that I am not a fan. Can ANYBODY out there tell me how we have let the o-line get in this shape? That is where the game is won and lost. We may beat Florida (doubtful) by some lucky breaks, etc., but with a point-guard center and a second tier o-line we will never keep up with the big boys. Muschamp has passed us……he knows where the game is won/lost. smash-mouth at the line. Coaching or not, we ain’t got the up-front hosses, folks!

How to bet college football: first, assume the line is essentially correct and then look for the emotional edge. Look for a team which is coming off a big win playing against a team which is coming off a sub-par effort. Bet on that team to rebound (we’re human beings; we’re up and we’re down). And that means only one thing:
Pick Georgia.

UGA was definitely “coming off a sub-par effort” (SC loss) when playing KY. Sure wasn’t much of a “rebound.”

don’t fool yourselves, FL will be up for this game. too much on the line for them. Conversely, GA will most likely not play w/confidence, be nervous and of course get gashed in the running game by fl.

I’ll bet even the GA players know they’re in for a beating. Unless they establish their dominance on both sides of the ball from the get go they will lose whatever confidence they gain and mustn win this game from the start. If they don’t demoralize the FL players from the get go and keep that pressure on them they don’t have a chance on beating FL, especially if FL gets an early lead and GA does not answer, it’ll be another SC like beat down for the dawgs. Bet on it!!!

Good gravy. There’s an understatement. The Gator kids are tough this year, no doubt, but I would have a lot more confidence if the Gators offense could generate more than 200 yards per game. Eventually, the Gators are going to play a team that does not make turnovers.
I hope that team is not Georgia.

IF UGA plays as they did the last 2 games…that spread should be 21+. However, the Dawgs have the (raw) talent and potential to beat UF. Every Las Vegas line I can find, shows us losing by 6 and a half or 6. Would any of us take 6 and a half points or 6 points ? $1,500.00 bet one of us made on Twitter in the article Jeff Schultz puts up. We’ve played one good game all season long : Vandie. Our special teams are bad at punting and Florida has great punting. Florida has great defense, and our Defense has never played a good game against a ranked opponent since Todd Grantham came here years ago.

I see TB has returned under his customary handle–after posting earlier under a couple of his many pseudo handles–probably in an effort to avoid being banned again.

Notice how he’s suddenly singing the gators’ praises now (”great punting,” “great defense”) after spending half the season insisting that they will have “four or five losses in 2012,” and that he’s “not impressed with Florida 2012.” Still clinging to that ignorant, prediction, TB? What a hypocrite.

Then there was the post where he proclaimed that “South Carolina is a better team than Florida . . . .” How’d that one work out for you, dumbazz?

There are many more examples of TB’s “wisdom,” but those of you who post here regularly already know that. The real tragedy for true Dawg fans is that he’s associated at all–however loosely–with UGA.

I think the Gators are a better team and the coaching is better at UF. UGA will need some turnovers to beat the Gators. With that said the unknown factor is just how much gas has the Gators used in these past few weeks playing both very good LSU and USCe teams. You could see Saturday that USCe was out of gas vs the Gators due to big games with UGA,LSU, and UF all in a row. No team could win those 3 in row and that includes Bama. You need not only injury luck but schedule luck some years and just perhaps the Vandy game allowed UF a little down period to recover before the USCe game.

Announcers at Kentucky game said Kentuck’s avg run yardage was a little over a hundred per game and that exceeded that in the first quarter against what is optimistically called the Georgia Defense. Mel Kiper has J Jones as No. 1, Tree as No. 12, and J Jenkins as No. 18 on his draft day big board. Add to that Rambo as an All-American. Vanderbilt game was an abberation. so we’ve given up 23, 20, 20, 44, 35, 24 n the other games. Buffalo and Fla Atlantic and the aforementioned anemic (before playing UGA) Kentucky as we all know are powerful teams to which we’ve given up 23, 20, and 24, respectively. One thing I’ve noticed is GA players tackling from the side using only their arms instead of having the weight of their bodies behind them. Are they afraid to hit? Don’t know, but every team (and I’ve watched every game for years) has no problem running straight up the middle on us. Quite annoying, I must say. I remember how proud I used to be of my Junkyard Dogs, who could be counted on to play a good game, win or lose, but I was always optimistic. Now, I have absolutely no joy or optimism in the upcoming FLA game because even if we should win, I know that at some point, we will revert to norm and be unprepared, unorganized, lethargic, and/or make so many turnovers and otherwise boneheaded plays as to give the other team a cakewalk. This years FL team is not made of great players but play hard and determined. Watch draft day and see how many GA players are taken and taken early. With Murray’s improvement and Gurshall, we should be able to play with anybody in the country. The SC game was a joke. Before the game, I thought some shuttle passes should work and giving blocking help with some tight-end formations might help. I saw neither. Sorry folks, but I’ve given up on Richt.
This Richt anyway. If someone knows what happened to the one who came here from FL State and coached GA for the first five years, please send him to Athens to replace the imposter for a football coach who is now in place. I hate writing bad about my Dawgs.

Mark Richt is a great man with a great heart. He is an honest first class man. He is the image that Georgia needs.

I’ve enjoyed both the highs and lows of WBOCP over the years but finally gave up after several years of frustration and knowing on more than one occasion that it was going to be ugly in Jax. Dawgs would have to start strong, avoid penalties, stay focused, perform well in all three phases of the game, have no turnovers and three take aways to make this close. Does anyone really see us doing any of these things??? Me either. I sold my tickets and plan to stay home and lick my wounds in private.

Here’s the record of our opponents to date read it and still tell me I’m crazy for being concerned about the state of our program. I’m sorrywe’ve built a resume the past two years on fool’s gold wins take a look:

Result – team – (their record)

W – Buffalo (1-6)
W-Missouri (3-4)
W- Florida Atl (1-6)
W- Vandy (3-4)
W- Tenn (3-4)
L- SC (6-2)
W – Kentucky (1-7)
? – Florida (7-0)
?- Ole Miss (4-3)
?- Auburn (1-6)
? Ga So (6-1) * Subdivision
? Ga Tech (3-4)

So take out UF and SC – two toughest games on the schedule, and Ga So – subdivision team, the combines record to date of the rest of the FOOL’S GOLD SCHEDULE IS: 20-44!!!
