Quick hits: Tech defense better, Vad Lee impressive

Redshirt freshman quarterback Vad Lee finishes off his 24-yard touchdown run. (Johnny Crawford/AJC)

I’ll be back with a column on Georgia Tech’s 37-17 victory over Boston College shortly. Until then, here are my three “Quick Hits” on the game:

1. POST-GROH PROGRESS REPORT: OK. Don’t get too excited. Boston College entered the game ranked 79th nationally in total offense and 84th in scoring. And it looked the part.  But the Jackets appeared far less confused for most of four quarters after allowing 42, 49 and 47 points in the previous three games (all losses), which led to Al Groh’s firing. Boston College was held to a lone field goal in its first eight possessions before scoring two second-half touchdowns. So, alas, Tech had some movement in the right direction.

2. VAD LEE MAKES HIS CASE: If redshirt freshman quarterback Vad Lee wasn’t ready for significant playing time before, he certainly seems to be now. Tech might even have itself a little quarterback controversy. On consecutive second-quarter possessions, Lee made four Boston College defenders miss on a third-and-11, 24-yard touchdown run, and then threw a 45-yard strike to wide receiver Anthony Autry for another TD. Starter Tevin Washington looked OK but not great, missing a couple of open receivers.

3. PAUL JOHNSON: NOT AN  IDIOT: Look, I don’t find the run-option offense the most exciting thing in the world, either. But for Johnson to get ripped for his offense every time the Jackets lose a game is just silly. When Tech losses, it’s because of its defense 90 percent of the time. The Jackets could do almost anything they wanted on offense early against Boston College (except successfully execute kick a field goal). They had over 400 yards in offense by halftime and their first seven possessions resulted in four touchdowns, a blocked field goal, a missed field goal and — finally! — a made field goal.

Good analysis of the state of Georgia Tech football. Now, can you please knock some sense into Bookman and Luckovich? I know … as Ron White says, “you can’t fix stupid”.

We made it interesting when they got within 14. We still can’t, and probably never will, be able to play 4 solid quarters. 2 or 2 1/2 about the best we can do.

Nice to get a win after a month of heartbreaking losses. Here’s what we need to improve for next week against BYU:

1. Special Teams – find a kicker who can kick field goals and send kickoffs inside the 10-yard line at least. 10 points left on the field because of kickers.
2. Mental attitude – I’ve been saying this for some time now, but a lot of our 4th quarter disappointments have been through poor execution and mindset towards the end, when we have the lead and the game in hand. BC wasn’t good enough to capitalize on our complacency, but VT, Miami, Clemson, and Utah (last season) were… so play hard and fast for ALL 4 QUARTERS.
3. Passing game: After a first 6 games when we were very efficient passing, today we had less than 40% completion rate. Washington missed some open receivers (especially Orwin for that gimme TD.) and Zenon failed to notice Waller was open on that trick play.
4. Get pressure on the QB. Not sure how we can do that, since we haven’t been able to do this with the 1-gap or 2-gap or any blitzes.

Some positives from this game:
1. Great day for the O-line, especially Uzzi. We had 390 yds rushing, most of it in the first half. Good day for the B-backs as a result.
2. MUCH BETTER 3rd down defense. Oh thank goodness.
3. Good tackling, and nice to see more energy in the defense. They’re playing harder and faster.
4. Vad Lee looked good running and passing… but he needs to improve his triple option reads and checks.

Agree with defense. But only way Vad can get better is at combat speed. You can’t simulate game speed. Start him. The only way to make this season a success is to beat UGA. And they are pretty good and have a good coach. We have to beat them by taking advantage of their mistakes and no making any. The 3 man front doesn’t have the men to pressure a good qb or fill the gaps.

Lot of good things came out of the game, things that can be built on the rest of the year. Kicking game is still lousy and the D line still can’t get consistent pressure on the QB. But, it is a win, Vad is starting to show his promise, O line had a good day and the team can enjoy this one tonight but with an eye on BYU for next week!

Tevin Washington doesn’t know how to close out ball games. Nine (9) points in the 2nd half of the game (I realize Vad played some snaps, and at the very end we put in the subs) won’t cut it against “high octane” offenses, as we’ve seen in the past.

The team can’t go to sleep, or on cruise control, the second half of the game and expect the defense to hold games for wins. It’s not reasonable, it’s not fair, and, obviously, it’s not working.

I would like to add that missing three (3) field goals, an extra point, and giving up a huge kick return at the end of the game, are inexcusable for special teams.

Add these two major flaws on top of the penalties, and fumbles that were almost lost and cost yards and lost downs (which could just have easily been turnovers). This was an ugly game against a bad team, and if they want to become Bowl eligible, they’re going to have to play a heck of a lot better since real competition is knocking on the door.

@jacket man..TW can’t b blamed for everything..he got them n position to score but missed fg..had a great opportunity to score and got a clip to make 1 and 25..not his fault..he took us a 8 min drive to close out game after vad’s 3 and out

Defense looked better today but still needs a pass rush. Set up in the 4-3 with one LB rushing every know and then. Maybe every know and then a 5-2-4 defense. Mix it up and rush the QB more. Way to much time

Until the Jacket D gets that killer mentality, they will continue to struggle. Every time they get a 2 or 3 TD lead, the D goes into funk mode. No pressure on QB, secondary has mental lapses and we must have the sorriest kickers in college. You have to play 4 full quarters until the final gun. If they come out and get a lead on BYU and let off, we are in for a rude awaking next week. Because those boys can throw that ball. The key to the rest of this season as it has been all year is the defense and special teams. If the d can step up with good solid tackling and the secondary can look to see where the ball comes from instead of watching the receivers we might finish 500 or maybe a little better. If no, a losing season.

I still don’t think Vad runs the offense as well as Washington does. He has passing advantages but I have yet to see him run the triple option correctly (Did we even attempt it?). And all of you Tevin naysayers, he had a really solid game. He made all of the right reads and had a bunch of key third down plays, including an amazing third and long completion to Bostic in double coverage.

Also, the defense still worries the heck out of me. We still cannot get ANY pressure on the quarterback. Our guys seem to just stand in front of the lineman and hope they’ll eventually move out of the way. We do that against Aaron Murray and we’re going to be absolutely picked apart.

Sorry, Billyho55, but if every single sentient being in America isn’t AWARE of breast cancer by now, he’s lived in a cave for the past 20 years. Enough already with the pink.
If the money they’ve spent on ‘pink’ after an initial AWARENESS blitz had gone to research, we’d be a longer way toward ’saving 2nd base’.
If you think I’m a crass a$$ too, well so be it.
And TW isn’t the problem, nor is PJ. You need athletes AND a coach who can identify w/ players and direct their talents. Groh wasn’t the type.
And WHEN oh, WHEN are we going to take a look at all those soccer players in HS around this state to come up with someone who can kick it thru the up-rights.

My fellow jacket fans and professional pundits still do not get it. A Head Coach is more than just a “brilliant” OC and giving the rest to position coaches. A HC sets the tone for the program, a HC must be “brilliant” in all three phases, a geat Motivator of young men, and most importantly a great recruiter. CPJ is none of these, in fact, he’s one of the worst to come though the flats. Look, if you guys love this offense so much, Put him the OC job…but puleeeeze, go hire a REAL head coach. Congrats Jackets fans….we beat BC. Yippee.

When you give up 40 something points to Middle Tenn. you don’t need to apologize for being excited the defense showed up for the first time this year at Boston College.

Johnson is not an idiot and we are very lucky to have him. People all over town are saying he needs to be fired. Man that Trump line for anything that moves is getting old. Richt next door get roses for bringing just racing Secretariat, never winning just looking good, while Johnson puts one of the best offensive shows in the country, wins the ACC despite getting it taken away on violations, the point is he can coach, and we want to fire him. Granted if he hires another Groh I may be in that number but I was fooled too, I thought Big Al was the answer. The real trouble is the offense is so good the defense relaxes. Then the offense feels the pressure of having to carry the whole team. Hopefully we got that fixed, but we aren’t and never have been a Kentucky or a Mississippi or a Virginia under Johnson.

Can we stop with the Vad Lee worship? Vad did just fine with the plays CPJ gave him but he doesn’t have command of the option yet! Tevin is operating at a high level of efficiency and is getting short-changed by this fickle GT fanbase. The guy is at the top of ACC QB stats and has an over 65% pass efficiency rating.
