Falcons 6-0 but Turner is frustrated with running game (UPDATED with video)

When a team is a 6-0, every negative critique should begin and end with, “… but they’re 6-0.” Because ultimately, the record determines the standings, the playoff field and whether some climate-controlled, pass-dominating offensive Dome team is going to be forced to head for the snowdrifts of Green Bay or Chicago in January in the postseason.

So we start again by reaffirming that the Falcons are 6-0. All hail.

But anybody witnessing the last three victories, sloppy exercises over mediocre opponents Carolina, Washington and Oakland, can attest to the team’s issues going into the bye week. Need confirmation? Ask their starting running back, who has had a close-up look at probably the Falcons’ biggest failing right now: their lack of a running game.

When Turner, a relative spectator in the mistake-plagued 23-20 win over the Raiders’ Sunday, was asked about the Falcons going into the bye week “the right way,” he didn’t respond with sunshine and lollipops.

“Yeah, a win is a win,” he said. “But we’re looking at something beyond just winning right now. We’re trying to be special and special teams don’t play like that.”

Beyond Matt Ryan’s three interceptions, beyond the defense allowing the NFL’s worst rushing team to run for 149 yards, beyond an offense that was matched in touchdown production by one late-game Asante Samuel pick-six but again was rescued by the foot of Matt Bryant, the Falcons’ problems start with their inability to jam the ball down the other team’s throats.

Offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter has all of these wonderful toys to play with. It’s clear Atlanta is now a pass-first team. That’s fine. The NFL has become a pass-first league. But at some point the Falcons will need to be able to run the ball, whether it’s late in the season, and/or on the road, and/or in the playoffs

Trailing 13-10 in the third quarter, they had a first-and-goal at the Raiders’ 2-yard-line following a turnover but had to settle for a field goal. The plays: incomplete pass, Turner for 1 yard, Snelling for a 1-yard loss (from the one-foot line).

Tied at 13-all in the fourth, they had a third-and-a-foot from their 45 but opted for a passing play. Ryan misconnected with Tony Gonzalez. They punted.

Turner seems frustrated. He was held to 11 carries for 33 yards Sunday. Ryan covered half that with a 15-yard scramble. The team’s rushing total: 45 yards.

The Falcons have managed to tip-toe around this issue all season. It hasn’t gotten in the way of them winning yet, but that seems inevitable.

Ask the running back.

“I’m not sure why it’s going like this,” Turner said. “It’s great to be 6-0 and everything. But we can’t just assume we’re always going to be able to get an interception or a last-minute field goal every time. At some point we’re going to have to run the ball. We’ve got to be able to knock it in [the endzone].”

Turner’s runs by quarters: two for 12 yards, three for 12, three for minus-one, three for 10.

Some of this lack of production is on him. He looks slow at times.

Some of it is on the offensive line. It generally has been far better at pass protection this season than opening holes or getting any push. (It wasn’t good at either Sunday.)

Has Turner lost confidence?

“No. I’m still here. I’ve never lost confidence.”

Have the Falcons lost confidence in Turner or their ability to run the ball at all?

“You would have to ask them that. That’s not something they would tell me. It’s their team, their scheme, their offense. I’m just here to try to help them win.”

Coach Mike Smith conceded the running game isn’t where he would like it to be. He referenced the first-and-goal drive, saying: “I know the next question is going to be when you’ve got the ball on the 1½-yard line, do you feel like you have to get it in there? Yes. The goal of our football team is real simple. It’s to score points and to score points any way that we can.”

They managed just enough again. They have won their last three games by two, seven and three points on drives with :05 (field goal), 2:46 (touchdown) and :01 (field goal) left. That makes them 6-0. But they’re playing a dangerous game.

Russ, I sort of get what Turner is saying….only a very small handful of players are allowed into management-think…on this team, maybe only Ryan. So Turner is being practical….he knows that in the NFL, he plays/they manage.

I agree with Turner. The coaching staff saw that the Raiders were starting their 3rd and fourth string corners and began to lick their chops, forgetting about Truner and the running game. This game plan almost resulted in the Falcons losing. Keep in mind too that Turner’s first couple of runs were productive. this coaching staff needs to realize that Matt Ryan doesnn’t have to win every game with his arm. Also, Garrett Reynolds is going to get someone killed. Get Peter Konz ready NOW!!!

Free Queezy! But really, though, I kind of expected more out of him so far. And Turner doesn’t sound happy. I just hope he’s happy enough to give it his all for the rest of the season ’cause I doubt he’ll be here after that.

I agree with Michael Turner; they don’t have a running game. They need a back with speed and power. Turner has NO BURST WHATSOEVER, and can’t even break tackles unless he has at least an 8-yard head of steam. He may be a bowling ball, but most of the time he plays like a bowling ball that your grandma rolled.

Anybody that knows anything about football was yelling at the TV screen today. Stick with running the football and set up the play action pass. Just line Polite up in front of Turner, Snelling, and Rodgers. Only Snelling should be lined up as a single back on pass plays. Jacquizz and Turner are not receiving threats. They remind me of Ron Garvin. Hands of Stone!!!

Scary game today. Gotta do a better job of run defense, and gotta get the running game going. We rushed it pretty well against the Redskins and the Raiders were sending far more pressure than the Skins did. We should have tried some more runs.

If we can’t get the run game going and more importantly, if we don’t stop the run, we’re going to be taken down. I don’t care what our record is. We’ve got to step it up in those two areas.

Those three picks by Matt were bad, but we know he’s better than that and wasn’t getting the protection he needed, particularly on the last one.

Nolan’s defensive scheme does not set up well for the run, and it showed today. We looked like a Van Gorder defense at times today and not like our usual selves. Mike Peterson in particular with that bad missed tackle showed our vulnerability. Does anyone know if Asante is ok? It was bad enough that Grimes went down, but if he’s down too, we’re in trouble.

Andy Reid has had our number at Philly for years. I don’t remember a time that we even beat them in recent memory at their place. I don’t think it’s happened under the Blank regime. Gotta use this bye to really get at Mike and force him to keep turning the ball over and do our best to shut down McCoy. He could eat us up in two weeks.

Come on Dirty Birds!!!! Good resiliency today, but we can play better than that! Falcons are easily our best hope in terms of breaking down that playoff barrier that has plagued our town for years.

Last time the Braves advanced in the postseason was 01.

Last time the Falcons did was in 04.

The Hawks are the only team to get past the first round since then, and that was in 2011.

I think the Falcons are good enough to run with the niners and Giants for an NFC title. We’ve shown it this year. Today was not a good example of that. But we can do it, I believe in this team!

Go Falcons!

It should read:
But at some point the Falcons need a better running back to run the ball, whether it’s late in the season, and/or on the road, and/or in the playoffs.

Bottom Line:
Even when Michael Turner was running the ball very well in the past four years, the Falcons rarely won the very big games and won none of the playoff games. He needs to be benched.

MCR has an easy job, continually criticize Ryan and wait for the Falcons to lose an elimination game. He does have a point – - Ryan has yet to win a playoff game. Burner Turner needs to drop the first part of his nickname. There isn’t a slower RB in the league… I’m so sick of watching this guy run into the back of the O line. If there isn’t a hole a mile wide, he will not hit it. My grandmother could run through the holes he’s seen this year in his big games. Our achilles heel is clearly at RB. Its obvious to anyone that has ever donned a jock strap in their life. Imagine how good this team would be with a breakaway threat at RB..

One of the best little vignettes NFL Films ever shot was rookie Harmon Wages coming back to the sidelines and getting the wrath of Norm Van Brocklin after putting himself in the game AND calling his own number. Of course the unedited version is choice but rarely surfaced since that was before cable tv. Harmon did do well with the ladies back in the day though. He was a player in more ways than one.

Jeff, you are too kind that Turner “looks slow at times”. He has clearly lost a step and needs a head of steam to get to a hole when one is created. Case in point was today’s 2nd down play on the Raiders’ 2 when they opened up a hole big enough to drive a truck through off-tackle and he couldn’t get to the goal line before the linebackers closed it up. With his inability to catch the ball and poor blocking he has become more of a liability than an asset. I like him for the past but the NFL is all about “what have you done for me lately”.

MCR has an easy job, continually criticize Ryan and wait for the Falcons to lose an elimination game. He does have a point – – Ryan has yet to win a playoff game. Even if Ryan were to win the Super Bowl, MCR would highlight his faults/failures. It’s best to simply ignore him. Comparing Ryan’s performance to other elite QB’s like the Mannings at the same stage of their careers won’t satisfy him. He is stll livid that Blank dumped Vick….

Some of the lack of running game is due to the lack of a o-line. None of our backs have gotten anything. Not quiz, not snelling, and not turner. Of the 3 turner is the best. In order to have a great run game you got to have some holes. However, another major issue is that turner is slow. He cannot get to the corner. He can only run straight and if it’s not there we only get a couple yards. Greta backs find holes when they’re not always there. So imo this should be turner’s last season.

as a result, we have to be pass first. It works for us now and it’s what the team has been building the last few years clearly. Quiz is too small for a full time back. I wish snelling was more productive but he doesn’t really seem to be. In any case teams like NE hardly ever run the ball and they still win/won in the past. But I agree, we need a run game to some degree, especially when we are barely leading near the end of the game and have a weak o-line for pass protection (need that play action).

The Falcons ARE 6-0. And yes “winning teams” find a way to “win.” But eventually, with the lack of running the ball, they’ll find a way to loose! Michael Turner is slower now and you can tell when he hits an opposing defender he doesn’t drive that defender backward like he used too. Start giving it to Lousaka Polite for the short yardage sits and see if that doesen’t work. If they don’t start running the ball teams can just tee-off on Matt Ryan!!!
BTW, whatever happened to all those screen passes we were supposed to see from Dirk Koetter?

Turner is right. And for his detractors, keep in mind that he averages 4.4 ypc, while our backups average 2.7 (Rodgers) and 2.4 (Snellings). Anyone who actually watches the Falcons week-to-week knows that Turner is our best RB. They also know that he helps us more if he gets 20+ carries per game (rather than 11) and MORE THAN ONE CHANCE at the goal line. McFadden carried 27 times for 70 yards today and the Raiders almost pulled off the upset. If Turner had carried 27 times he would have had 140 yards and we wouldn’t have needed a last second FG to win…

If we can get closer to a 50/50 run pass ratio both the run and the pass offense will be better in the coming games. If we used a fullback more Turner would get alot more yards! I know the 2 back set and the middle linebacker are lost positions in todays NFL but hell, Turner needs a fullback out front.

You’ll are missing the point on the Falcons’ game : That was an exciting NFL game. We were losing the whole entire time. With one-second on the clock they iced 1 time-out of their 3 in the bag to use and Matt Bryant – MISSED. Tony Gonzalez had made 2 miraculous catches in a row to give us the 55-yard winning kick with a second left. There was no over-time.

Oakland has a roster of Sebastian Janikowski who was warming-up with we intercepted to give us this chance. They have Darren McFadden, Carson Palmer out of Southern California, Richard Seymour in his 12th NFL season one of which in my-book he was Super Bowl MVP by a wide margin and several others almost that good. They have Brandon Myers, Denarious Moore, Derek Hagan, Marcel Reece and have every reason to be a great passing team, therefore. They have Shane Lechler, Phillip Adams, and Mike Goodson on Special Teams too. On Defense, they have Rolando McClain, Phillip Wheeler, and Tyvon Branch. Oakland is a lot better than Kentucky, Buffalo college, Missouri who has lost 4 of their last 6, Tennessee, Florida Atlantic and Vanderbilt.

Get with the program : The Falcons are an excellent football team.

UGA plays the # 103 strength of schedule 2012. The Falcons have 4 tough games 2012, while UGA had really one, but now Florida is fixing to lose the next 2 weeks and to end the season and in their bowl game.

Really the birds should be 3-3 at this point..I don’t see them doing much the last 10 games..Will they finally W a play off game?? The coin toss says not!

You give no credit to Oakland. That was a great play by Darren McFadden tackling at the 1-yard line. The offense made-up for not punching than in on the stout goal-line defense. Matt Bryant pulled the warm-up on a left hook, slightly – but, measured it up after Tony Gonzalez by himself made the last 2 catches on the last 2 plays of the game to set us up.

The truth is that the team has NOT played well in weeks. What we are seeing is a setting up of a playoff meltdown where we are drubbed out immediately if we dont get the run game going and tighten up on those interceptions. 6-0 means nothing if you know in your heart, your just not that good. I am very happy about a record 6-0 start but again….the falcons could easily be 3-3 right now too. I am not impressed yet as the competition will get stiffer moving forward.

Seriously, am I the only one who thinks the MAJOR (not the only) problem with the Falcons’ run defense is the ineffective play of middle linebacker Akeem Dent? I know he got the job by default (because of injuries and loss of Lofton to free agency) but given the opportunity, he hasn’t been able to deliver.

I’m sure the Falcons are well aware of this problem (Mike Smith actually said so last week) but apparently Dent (unfortunately) must be their best option and the Falcons just might be forced to continue to use him for the rest of the season.

So unless his play greatly improves, we can expect to see the same issues with the run defense.

jerry

They can’t stop the run, there is not a decent running back on the roster, nor a decent receiver out of the backfield, nor a decent punt returner, and there is still a lack of inovation on offense (Smith loves to keep things simple, therefore you see the exact same plays run over and over and over). 6-0 indicates that the NFL is down this year.

The ball was within the 1 yard line line after the Oakland penalty in the 3rd qtr and they still could not run it in. The lack of any running game will cost them at some point.

Two separate issues, Jaquizz Rogers just seems lost out there. He can’t finish runs and looks shaky in the passing game. Akeem Dent is a great special teams player, but is not a starting middle linebacker.

It’s the run blocking our defensive lineman aren’t very athletic and we don’t turn out pro bowl lineman. Also there’s no running back who can push Turner. Jaquizz Rodgers is not the answer and Jason Snelling hardly plays. We just don’t have a speed back who can break one every time he touches the ball.

This line eventually is gonna cause Matty Ice to be placed on Injured Reserve List, Turner can’t run the ball because this line Don’t open any holes for him to Hit. 2. RUN DEFENSE GRADE for last 6 Games is F. WE got exposed on the run Defense back in Pre-Season. Oakland knew our record on run defense and decided to GUT Atlanta with there SORRY RUN game. They were averaging 61 yards Running per game, they Doubled that against us. Mike Smith and the other coaches better address these issues or we could easily go 0-6 the next 6 games.

MR2 had an uncharacteristic day for turnovers (although if we’re talking MV7 it would be characteristic). I saw more grabbing and wavin by the D (instead of tackling) which gave the Silver & Black yards after the initial hit…Someone needs to tell Dumta that “kill shots” will get you on Sports Center win or lose and missed tackles make for latter. Raiders are very fast and adjustments were not made…fortunately their bad play (12 penalties) didn’t help their cause…BTW a road win in the NFL, now matter what the fashion is huge…Wash coulda been an L but they won….

Turner is not the problem. He would be devastating, if he had an OL that would open running lanes. I give the left side of the line a pass because they need to concentrate on pass protection. Ryan’s blind side is priority one.

The problem is the right side of the OL. We should be relying on that side to run the ball, yet we tend to run to the left, when the short yards are needed. That is very telling. Clabo is playing hurt. He is doing what he can.

Reynolds is the real problem. As the RG, he needs to be the best run blocker. Instead, he is simply a warm body. I want TD to work out RG’s during this bye week. The RG position is now the desperate need for this team. Without a better performance on short yardage, this team will crumble in the playoffs.

Sorry, but a lot has to be on Turner. He is older and definitely not the same player that first came to us from San Diego. But of course he’s got to have a hole to run through also so there is no doubt an issue there as well. But, good teams find a way to win and so far they have done that.

“Some of this lack of production is on him. He looks slow at times.” That’s because Turner is slow. He expects the OL to open holes five yards wide. He expects Polite to do what Ovie did…not going to happen.

Next time you interview Turner, ask him why he consistently runs into the back of his blocker when the hole has obviously closed. Why is he incapable of keeping his feet moving and bouncing the ball to the outside? Why would thighs the size of tree trunks is he not trucking guys over? He’s soft that’s why.

Top teams in this league play with a “refuse to be stopped” mindset. Defense should have a “refuse to let the opponent score” mindset. We still got some weaknesses on both sides of the ball, that’s evident. Until then I’ll enjoy the team that they’ve fielded this year and wait to see where we are at the end of the year.

The OL needs upgrading . that’s obvious. Maybe next year they can get a couple of free agents or draft an OL that can start. The only thing they can do now is get by with what they have or make a trade. Turner looks heavy even though he is lighter than last year. Bottom line – the holes aren’t there to go through. The DL , especially DE could use an upgrade also.. just one pass rusher at DE would be a big help.

Yes theFalcons are 6-0, but there are definitely some fixes that need to be done. We need a pass rush from more than just 34 year old John Abraham. The defense needs to sure up against the run, and the corners are still playing to soft. The lack of a running game is due to the fact Turner is tip toeing to the line and the brief holes they open for him. Rodgers isn’t that much better. Give Snelling the start and let him run with passion and conviction like he does. In the upcoming draft our focus needs to be TB, DE, CB, TE, LB in that order.

Yes there were plenty of poblems, but 90% goes to the O Line, both on run blocking and pass protection. Shades of last year’s [layoff loss to the NY Giants – We can’t get a yard on the ground when we need it. First and goal from the two results in a field goal. That is not championship caliber football and Turner is not a championship caliber back. He has lost more than a step and he has no peripheral vision, doesn’t even look for a hole, runs right into the back of his O-line. If we do not address the running game we will once again exit in the early rounds of the playoffs.

First things first, we are 6-0. The NFL is a very difficult league, every team has players and coaching, so I am very happy with the start.

Saying that, there is no doubt in my mind its the line. If the Falcons have one glaring weak spot on this team, its the O line. The pass protection has been good, thats is up to the Carolina and Oakland game. Just not creating holes in the run game. This is, in part, a result of an organizational failure since 2008 to use high draft picks for the O line. Saying that, this is just mid October. Hopefully the line will improve as the season progresses and by playoff time, the blocking improves.

Despite a poor offensive line and a poor running game, the undefeated Matt CLUTCH Ryan has masterminded three improbable, last-minute, come-from-behind wins in a row, through sheer determination, strength of character and good, old-fashioned leadership.

Meanwhile Mike Vick, who has lazily and stupidly squandered his God-given talents, despite being surrounded by incredibly talented teammates, continues to melt down, choke and fumble away fourth quarter leads, because he is a stupid, lazy loser.

Face it, Choke. Matt Ryan is getting better and better every year, because he studies and works hard. He will win a Super Bowl eventually. Already, if he had a better right tackle and a power running back, he would be unstoppable; but even with those liabilities, he remains undefeated.

Mike could have been an elite player. As a Falcon, he was the fastest player in the NFL, and had perhaps the strongest arm in the league. But instead of watching game film and reading the playbook, he wasted his time murdering pets and gambling with his posse of stupid thug friends. And for that, he went to the federal pen for two years. He is no longer the fastest runner or strongest passer. He is washed up. He will never be elite.

But not by Schultz……

Hmmmmmmmm

No way will the Falcons finish 18 – 0. Of course we knew this long ago. Still, there are many aspects of last season creeping in to this season.

Poor tackling. These guys are professionals. Why can’t they tackle like pros?

Red zone failures. 1st and goal on the 2 yard line and they settle for a FG?

The above result from the coaching staff. Decisions and leadership.

Still….The team is undefeated.

I think back to 1986 when the Falcons started 4 – 0…..Then fell apart. This team has had 3 chances to lose and somehow, they won. They have a week off to reflect and rework on the failures that so far have not hurt. Everything that has gone wrong can be fixed.

Turner has to take some of this on himself. McFadden was running much harder and faster than Turner. I would have loved to hear him say what he could have done better to improve the running game.

Despite 6-0, this is a team with serious issues. The biggest problem on offense isn’t the running backs, it’s the offensive line. Remember the six sacks? Now, this week, no holes for Turner. If the Falcons could dominate the O line, they’d be just fine. On defense, they have to close the deal on 3rd long. Right now, 3 long is exactly where the opposition wants us. Whether it is a draw, a screen pass, or a pass down the middle, each week the opposition seems to get it done. The defense needs a killer instinct to finish the job, not play soft.

“But we’re looking at something beyond just winning right now. We’re trying to be special and special teams don’t play like that.”.. Truth . A win is a win no matter how you got it . Falcons got 6 wins, BUT the defense once again has out performed the offense. Look at the Cardinals-Nats in baseball. Nats had the best record while Cardinal limped in and knocked them out.GO back to the Braves in 2010 and how they were 1st in May 31st only to end up as wildcards in October 3. It’s the momentum that matter and falcons must maintain it to win a playoff game.

Most of the Falcons points are on turnovers by the defense… How is this different from a team that relied on defense last year and got 2 points.. Matt Ryan had 3 picks yesterday. Over threw the ball several times.

I like Turner, however, he is not getting the job done. I dont know if he has gained wt. and that has slowed him down, or he just aint got it no more. He looks to me like he tippy toes around…not acceptable…need speed and power…he is lacking speed, needs to be used differently… I think Snelling would be better at this point.

oops – accidently sent nothing in comment section – we just have to draft a running back next year. In at least the 2nd round – and hope Quizz develops further. Turner has lost a step and it just does not bode well for any running back who has aged and lost that quick burst – the holes close awfully quickly in NFL – can’t dilly dally in the crease.

Are the Birds trying to leave fuel in Turner’s tank for the second half of the season and post season? that is all i can hope at this point, because they have not fed him the ball at very much at all the first 6 weeks, even with a sizable lead against KC…
This is the NFL so all teams are competetive, but it would be nice to see the Falcons put a team like the raiders away instead of playing down to their level. That become hard however when your qb has an off game, and throwing 3 pics would qualify as one of his worst…
The best drive of the game was the no huddle which begs the question, why don’t we use that more often?

All in all, we are 6-0 and it is nice asking these types of questions going into a bye week instead of how are we going to salvage a season and should we be playing for a draft pick… :)

The truth is the Falcons haven’t won a playoff game like the Dream, Braves & Hawks so until they do that, it is pretty accurate to pressure them to take it to the next level. They are the one team in Atlanta whose bar is lowered to ” can’t blame Matt Ryan” or “we’re 6-0 so we’re fine”.. Teams limp the season only to take out top teams. SO until they win something it’s just another team with a good season… In 1998 they celebrated the Superbowl before even playing in the superbowl 34-19. Since drafting Matt Ryan we have made the playoffs 3/4 times missing the playoffs in 2010. Held NFC South 1 time and lost to the eventual Champs 48-21. Lost 2 Wild Card playoff games in which one went to the superbowl ( Cardinals) and one actually being the superbowl champs (Giants). In the 3 playoff appearances, our offensive production has went down 30-24, 48-21 and last year’s 24-2. Joe Johnson took the Hawks to the playoffs 5 STRAIGHT years and still didn’t get the love Ryan has. Win one playoff game then the 6-0 record would matter

Turner looks slow because he is slow. Doesn’t accelerate when hitting the hole at all, both Dierdorf and Gumbel made the same observation and commented on it yesterday. The Offensive Line still sucks on run blocking, the same group that failed so miserably last year still can’t open a hole for slow poke Turner to run through and it was telling that they couldn’t get a yard yet again on the ground and had to call a pass play on third and goal. The Defensive Line meanwhile got carved up by a less than mediocre Raider team yesterday. Have not seen much of the Falcons from out here on the West Coast this year but truly mystified how this team could be 6-0. They still don’t have big, nasty studs on either O Line or D Line and thus can be manhandled by powerhouse O Lines and D Lines as they were yesterday.

Petrino wsa a egomaniacal jackass….I am telling you that GREAT TEAMS WIN CLOSE GAMES!!! GREAT TEAMS OVERCOME MISTAKES!!! GREAT TEAMS OCCASIONALLY HAVE BAD DAYS!!! GREAT TEAMS ARE 4-2, 5-1 or 6-0 at this point of the season….did anyone really expect us to be 6-0?
Yes we need a running game…..Turner needs to quit bitching and figure out why we CHOOSE to pass rather than run, this from a guy who couldnt get 6 inches last year at home vs the saints? We are good and we will get better as the season goes along.

It’s not the RBs if they can’t even get started. There were ZERO holes being opened by our O line in yesterday’s game. On the goal line plays Oakland was in the backfield before our linemen MOVED. Either the Raiders figured out our snap count in the first quarter or our Offensive line cannot run block. I also saw #61 try to submarine someone who simply hopped over him. You’re 300 pounds, Hawley, HIT SOMEBODY.

I am not sure where the blame lies. Some lies with the O-line and their lack of blocking. Some lies with Turner, who seems slow and ponderous at times, and a lot of the blame to the offensive coordinator for calling really boring and dull running plays.

However, however much one likes the run, putting points on the board is more important.

But we can’t just assume we’re always going to be able to get an interception or a last-minute field goal every time. At some point we’re going to have to run the ball. We’ve got to be able to knock it in [the endzone].” [...]

Yup, that’s exactly the way it is. Someday, like yesterday when we needed to exercise our ground game, the muscle was already showing signs of being atrophied from disuse.

Yup. 6-0 is hard to argue with and so is our passing game when it is firing on all cylinders… but a balanced attack is always better than a one-dimensional playbook.

When the attack through the air is backed up by the one on the ground, your opponents have no place to hide.

Yes 6-0 is great but unless we can get a yard or inches from the goal line and have to try to force a short pass into the end-zone coverage we are going to lose a lot of games by year-end. There are ONLY SO MANY MIRACLE FINISHES available each year. We have already used up this year’s allotment. Matt Ryan showed that he can play pretty bad sometimes. Yet we won three games that we could have just as easily LOST. Take the bye week and address these problems with the O-Line and the RBs or we will be a first round casualty again. Guaranteed..

They are not going to the Superbowl in 2013 because they are NOT Superbowl material. Their fans are fairweather fans. When their team win, they are supportive of them, when they loose all you see are a lot of empty red seats in their stadium when they are playing. With fans like that…so wonder the Falcons are a sorry team.

Interesting comment just above that uses the records of our opponents against us. What the commentator fails to understand is that those records denote a loss to the Falcons. For instance, the Redskins record… as well as SD, would be a lot prettier had they not lost to… dare I say it? The Falcons.

So, using the records of those we have beaten against us… isn’t worth a lot, even in a kangaroo court.

What I don’t understand is, WHY DO WE HAVE A MIDGET PLAYING RUNNING BACK?? What is Quez, 5′2″ 185 lbs? Let’s get a back with some meat on his bones to spare turner. Someone that can hit the line and actually push the big linemen back a little. Not hit the line and bounce off. “COME ON MAN”!!

“Trailing 13-10 in the third quarter, they had a first-and-goal at the Raiders’ 2-yard-line following a turnover but had to settle for a field goal. The plays: incomplete pass, Turner for 1 yard, Snelling for a 1-yard loss (from the one-foot line).”
***************************************************
Above ….the incomplete pass on 1st down wasn’t really an incomplete pass. It was #99 Lamarass Houston blowing past Tyson Clabo and Matt Ryan having to throw the football away or get sacked for a 10 yard loss. It went in the books as an incomplete pass for Ryan, a hurry for Houston. On the Turner run he probably had a better chance of getting in cutting outside to the left which the only person who could have taken him on was #33 Tyvon Branch, forcing Branch to bring him down head to head which I think Turner would have won that battle. As it was Branch had an angle and cut his legs out from under him while #56 Miles Burris (Sam Baker’s responsibility, basically gave up on him and didn’t continue the block) hit him high which rotated Turner putting his body parallel to the goal line but unfortunately not over it. On third and goal there was an encroachment penalty called on #99 Lamarass Houston but it was actually #58 Tollefson who encroached. We are lucky illegal procedure wasn’t called on Clabo as he actually did flinch causing Tollefson to make contact. And on 3rd down after the penalty Snelling never had a chance as the entire O line got their butts handed to them.

I agree with everyone that noticed Michael Turner’s use of “them”. Wow! Is he not a part of the team? I think we are all aware of how poorly he performed last year as well. However, if we are to make the Superbowl, the O-Line has to improve. I feel this is the ONE MAJOR WEAKNESS we have. GO FALCONS!!!

Maybe Turner should run like a 245 lb. power back instead of a 200 lb. scat back. He has no burst, did anyone notice McFadden from Oakland when he hit the line it moved……no matter who was in front of him. Come on…just run the ball hard, no way a guy Turner’s size should be stopped a yard short of the goa.

Wow, We are 6-0 and hes complaining that hes not getting the ball? Turner is what 250? Undisclosed weights tend to be higher than lower. We can all blame the line and thats fine because they are not playing that great when it comes to running the ball. At the same time, Turner needs to take some of the blame for always running into the back of his line. Someone should show Turner a video of Foster, Jones-Drew, Forte, McCoy, heck… even Legarette Blount. These guys have the ability to cut and even jump over players. Turner is called a bowling ball for a reason, all he can do is run forward until someone grabs his shoe string and a 5′9″ 190 pound corner back takes him down in the open field. That is unacceptable. If you want to run the ball more try doing something besides the 5-6 of 11 times you ran for 1 yard or less. Turner stats have always been overflatted due to the runs he makes when nobody is anywhere around him. (see Eagles game 2011) Turner which is one of his 60 yard runs. I wish someone would go back the past 2 seasons and see how many times he gets 2yards or less. Everytime I do, over 50% of the time they put the offense out of sync,

I agree 110%. I think defenses have figured out that if you hit Turner in the legs he is down. Go back and look at the 2nd down run in the 3rd quarter when he couldn’t get the ball in. He had the entire left side to cut back to but no imagination to do it. The safety cut his legs out from him and had he cut outside to the left the safety never would have won that battle head to head. Sam Baker took a play off on that one. And of course when we gave the ball to Snelling on 3rd down the entire O line got their butts handed to them.

Being on the one inch line and not scoring a touchdown should frustrate and concern everyone. A QB sneak with a back pushing from behind surely gets the job done more times than not. The Falcons for two years have not been able to hand the ball to a back and get a yard, half yard, or even an inch. If the coaches are concerned about wear and tear on Ryan, why not put a heavier more durable athlete in the QB spot in that situation. Where is a Tebow when you need one.

Turners has aright to be mad. He is getting blame for no blocking. You can take AD, Mo-Jo or McCoy and they couldn’t run behing this line. Getting hit in back field. How are they going to run with no one blocking. Their new O-line coach(Hill) is not helped. I say they were better last year with the coach that lefted. They could run ball for four years. They have not ran ball, good one game this year.

That’s not true granted some teams have a better offensive line but not all. Outside of Harvey Dahl this is the same offensive line since 2008 that made Turner who he is. Yes Svitek took over for an injured Baker but that’s the truth. Forte, McCoy, Johnson, Murray, Richardson, Greene are all having better years than Turner. Turner is 24th in yds/game this year. A lot of this is personal opinion but 24th in the league is not. It speaks for itself.

I’ve seen some flashes from Turner the past 2-3 games, but overall…he’s gotten soft. He’s not as explosive when finding holes, but then again…we dont have a pro-bowl full back anymore. He’s getting older, that’s just how it goes. If he’s frustrated, he should do something about it instead of b*tching and getting DUI’s. Where’s that Turner that had something to prove back in 08′?

At 3-3 in the NFC (B)east, I wouldn’t label Washington, “mediocre” — Just ask the Vikings how, “mediocre” the ‘Skins are. And with all due respect, last time I checked the standings, the Raiders are an NFL team, which had TWO weeks to prepare for the Falcons, and TWO weeks rest in doing so. As a TRUE “die-hard” Falcon fan’ since 1977, we haven’t seen many FULL seasons where we won six games total, I don’t care how we’re winning, and the way we’re winning, Falcons teams in the past would have rolled over the last three games. About 60% of all NFL games are decided by eight points or less, regardless of how good or bad the teams’ records are. Kudos to Mike Smith (and the rest of the coaching staff) for having this team disciplined in clock-management, and not “killing” itself in ridiculous penalties.

No one has lost confidence in Cheeseburger Turner. People must remember the loss of Ovie Mughelli mid-way last season seriously hurt our power run game. Also, it’s important for us to not wear out Turner before the playoffs. It has seemed (to me) turner in the past years seems slowed by playoff time and hasn’t had the same burst. So our most dangerous personel seems to be the single-back set with trip wide. Also, we have been able to run the ball just as effective as past years. With the opposing defenses always having to respect the run and quick screens to the receivers. We have the most flexible offenses the falcons have ever had. Let’s keep the folks healthy and keep rising up.

I can see most of you people have never either played football or the position. You can’t justget the ball and hit a whole quickly, you have to be patient and wait for the play to develop. The only downfall is that this has the slowest group of lineman in all of football so their is no running the ball for them. There is a reason why none of the backs can gain positive yards. Koetter don’t have any designed running plays besides block the man in front of you. This used to be a team with strong lineman but not lately. These lineman are only good for pass blocking. A D-line like Dallas and San Fran is going to murder Matt Ryan unless these group of lineman develop a passion for run blocking.

Looking at the DirecTV Shortcut I saw so many mistakes in the last 3 games I still can’t understand how we have 6 wins. We have a fullback that can’t hold a block, the DBs can’t tackle, confusion with the LBs, and finally bad decisions by Matt Ryan. Believe me, there are so many more that i could list but it would take an hour to point them out. Yes, we’re undefeated at this point but these guys are gonna have to tighten up during the next 10 games or we’re going to wind up on the outside looking in. There won’t be a playoff game to lose.
