Radakovich says Johnson is ‘right person for this job’

Paul Johnson's program has slid since a fast start but mostly because of defense. (Curtis Compton/AJC)

After 2-4 start, Tech coach Paul Johnson fired his second defensive coordinator. (AJC/Curtis Compton)

In his first two seasons at Georgia Tech, Paul Johnson went 20-7, including 12-4 in the ACC, and won a conference title (the whims of NCAA investigators notwithstanding).

In the 2½ years since, he is 16-16, including 10-10 in the ACC, and has lost nine of his past 13. He also just fired his second defensive coordinator, hoping to salvage a season that has some fans grumbling and wondering if those early results were some aberration.

Yet to be determined: Is this merely a step back before another eventual ACC title run (most optimistic) or ugly foreshadowing of a Bill Lewis collapse (most pessimistic).

Welcome to today’s sports world, which can be best summed up as: What a beautiful morning/Wait I felt A Raindrop/The Sky Is Falling! (Elapsed time: 12 minutes.)

For what it’s worth, the sky isn’t falling in Dan Radakovich’s office. The Georgia Tech athletic director affirmed Tuesday that he has not lost confidence in Johnson as the school’s football coach, nor has he given any thought to making a change in that office.

“I know there’s some erosion in support right now, but the Falcons are 5-0, and there was erosion in their fan base last year, too, when they didn’t win in the playoffs,” Radakovich said. “That’s the thing about sports now. People can express their opinion quickly.

Dan Radakovich said Johnson's resume proves he's worthy of being given the benefit of the doubt. (AJC photo)

Dan Radakovich said Johnson's resume makes him worthy of being given the benefit of the doubt. (AJC photo)

“I have confidence in Paul. He’s the right person for this job, and he will continue to move the program forward. We have to get through this bump in the road. We still have six games left for a chance to have a positive season.”

In at least one respect, being a football coach isn’t different from any other job: When somebody’s tenure begins with signs of very-good-to-greatness, the boss is more likely to give that employee the benefit of the doubt.

Johnson has earned that benefit.

What he accomplished in his first two seasons, including Tech playing in its first BCS bowl game and a first-season win at Georgia, went far beyond what anybody could have projected.

Critics suggest he has made consecutive defensive coordinators, Dave Wommack and Al Groh, scapegoats for his own failings. But apply some logic here: Wommack was fired after the 2009 ACC title season (hence: not a scapegoat). Groh was fired after a three-game losing streak that saw the Jackets score 36, 28 and 31 points but allow 42, 49 and 47. There were late-game defensive collapses both this year and late last season.

Is this really the time to pin Tech’s problems on the triple-option offense?

For as much as Johnson’s offense tends to be a lightning rod for criticism in these just-chuck-it days of football, the Jackets have scored fewer than 14 points in seven of 59 games under Johnson and fewer than 20 in 14 of 59. Overall, they have scored an average of 30.5 points.

Is Johnson ultimately responsible for whether his team wins or loses? Of course. But Radakovich doesn’t see any of the other signs an athletic director looks for when contemplating a coaching change, most notably a lack of effort or hopelessness. “It’s not like we’re getting blown out,” he said. “It’s not like we’re being physically overmatched every week.”

He said he understands the criticism. He expected it. He fields questions at booster functions and reads weekly critiques in his email’s inbox. He just doesn’t agree with them.

“Paul has demonstrated to me that he can coach and he can pull a team together,” Radakovich said. “And it’s important to note that it’s not just here. His entire career [including Georgia Southern and Navy] to me has been as big a positive as anything. He has shown that he’s able to sustain success in an organization over a long period of time.”

Radakovich and Johnson speak daily. The AD was a sounding board for him when Johnson was considering firing Groh.

Radakovich: “It was not an easy decision for Paul, and I look at my role as being someone who can give him a 360-degree view of things. But he’s the head football coach, and I want to give him the opportunity to have the staff that he sees fit.”

If the losses continue, it’s logical to assume that Johnson ultimately would pay a price. But Tech isn’t nearly at that point yet.

CPJ has been in the games, still a very good coach. The defense just couldn’t figure out the fast offenses out there. I wonder if the 3-4 working in this no huddle offense, if it is too complicated for a split second decision making. We will see.

Yawn, that is revisionist history at its finest! It was RADAKOVICH who brought on the violation. The NCAA said to Dan, “Don’t say anything to anyone”, and he went straight to Coach Johnson. Now you’re saying that’s Coach Johnson’s fault???

The problem for Paul Johnson and Dan Radakovich is that there was a major bump in the road in 2010, the first losing season at Georgia Tech in over a decade. Now two years later there’s a BIGGER bump in the road. The excuse in 2010 was that the last of Chan’s recruits were the problem. Now the excuse is that Al Groh was the problem. To those who write that CPJ has been in the games and still a good coach, I would wonder if playing close for two or three quarters is now what passes for full competence. Tech is lucky to have a headcoach like Paul Johnson.

You have to admit that his offense, whether you like it or not, is extremely productive and at times nearly impossible to shut down.

I also like CPJ’s “no nonsense” approach to coaching and running the program.

About Gailey’s recruits.
On the 2009 defense were future 1st round pick Derrick Morgan and 3rd round pick Morgan Burnett.
What about the other none players from Gailey’s recruiting?
They stunk.
We gave up lots of big plays in spite of having two high round future pros.
The other nine had to be 2 stars if that.
Derrick Morgan might have had even more sacks but the lack of talent elsewhere allowed for double teams.
We may not have as many future pros but we do have a higher level of defensive talent now.
With Groh gone, I think we will start to show it.
Groh demoralized the group by getting outcoached every 4th quarter.

Except for a hiccup in 2010, Johnson’s offense has improved each year both in total yards and points scored. His first year they averaged 26.2 ppg and this year through six games 37.8 ppg. This is a huge difference!

In contrast the defense has gotten progressively worse each year. In 2008 it gave up 18.8 ppg and 312.7 ypg. This year the numbers ar 30.2 ppg and 431.0 ypg. If we had the Wommack’s 2008 defense what would our record be? With the defense giving up so much and not creating stops, it puts more pressure on the offense to score on every possession. We are tied for second in the ACC in interceptions with 7. But this has not slowed down or phased any quarterback.

Johnson had no choice but to let Groh go. The definition of insanity is to keep doing what you are doing and expect different results. If Groh had stayed till the end of the season the hangover would be worse. Sometimes you have to cut your losses.

Part of the problem was the infraction occurred right before the Uga game and we did not want to lose either Morgan or Burnett for that game.

What penalty did the agent get?
None most likely.

Jacket Detective one glaring stat is the rate offensively that we now fail on third down and when we go on 4th as opposed to the days of Dwyer, Nebitt, Bey Bey, et al. Also the amount of offensive plays 20 yds or more has declined. What does that tell you?

Jacket Man

October 9th, 2012

Although no one dreamed this season would turn out as bad as it has so far, It was expected that next season would be the better year record wise because the schedule set up for that way and, in all honesty, the transition to a new starting QB would be in place.

When Paul Johnson first came to Atlanta, and implemented brand new offensive and defensive schemes, the team managed to go out and compete better than anyone could hope for. Now that the offense is pretty much in place, with the exception of breaking in a new QB next season, which we did when we first started running his TP/Spread Option Offense. Once again, however, the team will potentially go through a transition to a new defensive scheme.

On the positive side is that GA Tech recruits and signs intelligent plays who play as a team rather than as individuals, so making transitions, such as these, are often-times quicker, and easier, for our players than other teams. The only potential issue might be the “physical type” of player who might be needed to play in the new defense, like was necessary in the 3-4.

But if you get a quality defensive coordinator, he’ll be able to work with the players he has on the roster and then bring in players who will fit his future plans. If I were a betting man, which I’m not, Paul Johnson and DRad already have a short list and maybe have even spoken to a coach or two, and it won’t take too long to get someone on board so that the recruiting process can be stabilized. More than likely it will happen after the season ends, as a courtesy to other teams, but it won’t be much after the season ends.

GT is getting blown out. All the teams that beat GT stink. Va Tech has had a 3 game losing streak. Miami got flat out embarrassed by Kansas State & Notre Dame. MTSU lost to McNeeze State & LA Monroe (OMG) and they physically dominated the Jackets in every way. Even Clemson lost to FL State pretty soundly.

Johnson can’t even beat bad teams.

Mike S.

ADs are never quick to write off coaches, but your fooling yourself if you think Johnson will ever recruit the talent he inherited from Gailey. Yes the option can perform very well given that talent, but it unfortunately can never recruit it. Johnson scored 28 pts on a MTSU team he scored near 50 on in the two previous years. He managed 31 against a Clemson defense that has been absent most of the year. That’s not numbers you expect from this offense. Johnson still has yet to beat a solid team that had more than a week to prepare for him.

Why do people not allude to the defense as Johnson’s defense? Is it not his? He’s the coach so ultimately everything is traced back to him. As good as his offense might be the defense falls back to him just as much as the offense does.

His offense does enough to win games, but his defense doesn’t, so in the end we lose games. That’s not acceptable, doesn’t matter how many you score if at the end of the day the other team has more. And YES it is CPJ’s fault, because just as much as the offense is ‘his’ so is the defense.

Mike S.

October 9th, 2012

Fact is, the defense has been awful since day one Johnson took over. Womack was no better than Groh. Johnson’s offense just made up for it. Johnson’s offense was driving the field and scoring a lot of points with Nesbitt, Dwyer, and Thomas. The last two years, the offense hasnt been doing that. That puts more pressure on a defense that has never been up to the task under Johnson.

UGA cant beat anyone good in the SEC, but they can sure beat Johnson. This ACC is as bad as its ever been, and Johnson is lucky to come out with 7 win seasons. Can you look at one game left on the schedule and call it a win?

Gailey might not have had Nesbitt on the bench actually. He picked up Nesbitt for the Bill’s practice squad. As a defense back, not a QB. Although that obviously doesn’t mean much as we will never know.

“Continue to move the program forward”? Are you kidding me? The program is not moving forward, it is moving backward. Another DRAD quote…”it’s not like we’re getting blown out”. What do you call the MTSU debacle? What do you call the Clemson game? What do you call giving up 600 yards a game? Have you seen your players absolutely quit like they did against MTSU? Obviously the decline of the GT program is due to both Johnson and Radokovich.

I agree with what Radakovich said, and don’t think it is anywhere near time to consider making a change. That would be at the end of next year at the earliest. But I think it needs to be said that even if Radakovich did think it was time, he wouldn’t do it because he can’t afford to. Johnson makes over $2.5M and is signed through 2016. Tech just can’t afford that, especially since they are paying Hewitt $1.4M not to coach until March 2016.

If you really want to know what Radakovich thinks about Johnson, watch and see if he extends his contract after each year.

His lost to Duke, seriously Duke, 4 years in a row before finally beating them in his fifth try.

We all might as well sit back and relax because unless he losses the players there will be no coaching change before then. His buyout is just to steep at this point. If Brady had started the season, he might have been the one injured instead of Bledsoe.
The injury made the decision simple.
The QB decision is best left to the coaches.
Groh has wrecked this team, not Tevin.
Groh’s getting outcoached every 4th quarter has been a cancer on the team.
Don’t say Tevin is the cancer.

Its easy to score a lot of points on Duke and Wake Forset but Tech has NOT proven it can score enough points against Georgia, Virgina Tech, and any other school they play that has more than 1 week to plan for them. I’m sorry but this offense has had plenty of time to work / win but it has a ceiling and I believe they have reached it! Sure they look good the first couple of years but they had better talent recruited by prior coaching staff running a very different offense. Furthermore, the top schools are just faster and bigger than Tech so wining against good teams has goot much harder with less talent.

This does not end well I’m afraid. Unless of course Tech is okay with wining 7 or 8 games a year? If they are then I’ll take my time and money elsewhere.

Jacket Detective: here’s what you are failing to see: Brady WAS ready for the job. Belichick thought Bledsoe was better. Brady got into the game because of injury and PROVED he was ready by winning the friggin super bowl.

So was the coach right or wrong on Brady?

Just because Vad isn’t playing doesn’t mean he “isn’t ready”. All it means is, CPJ doesn’t think he is ready. And CPJ could be wrong.

Gotta give CPJ the benefit of the doubt here. Everyone may be saying 2 years from now that we should have fired him 2 years ago. But at least he is willing to make the change most fans were calling for, dismissing Groh. I am board with the argument that if we had a good defense, our W-L in the past 2+ years would be a lot better. People talking about coaches choosing to leave GT after they win some are fools. Bobby Ross left… For the NFL! Does that mean LSU is a bad program because Saban left for the NFL? IS Florida a bad program because Spurrier left for the NFL?

And O’Leary left to coach at Notre Dame. What a surprise, an Irish coach considers coaching at Notre Dame as the pinnacle of his career. If Notre Dame hadn’t wanted him, he’d probably have stayed at Tech for a long, long time.

Also, Tashard Choice wasn’t recruited by Gailey, he was recruited by Oklahoma, and transferred to Tech because his mother lives here.

Johnson’ offense, even with the current not so great QB, is still putting up plenty of points. And he’s smart enough to know he’s no defensive genius, which is why he’s trying to find one. So far it hasn’t worked out, but he’s not the first coach to have to fire a coordinator when things aren’t going well, and he won’t be the last.

When you have a GT defensive player quoted as saying after the Miami game, “We weren’t prepared”, you know you got problems on defense. That carried over into the MTSU game. You can’t get rid of all the players which means the only thing a HC can do is fire the DC. Are all the defensive coaches terrible? I have no idea. Maybe they were just trying to teach and implement Groh’s 3-4 as instructed by Groh. Johnson must have an idea that the remaining D staff can change and improve some of the defensive problems or he would have stuck with Groh. Either that or he’s really desperate. You cannot blame all the loss on the defense. Some blame has to be place on TW and the offenses execution in the fourth quarter. Many of the games in the fourth, TW would make poor reads and cause 3 and outs. CPJ’s play calling was poor at crucial times. In the fourth quarter, at 4 and 1 you punt, but in overtime on 4 and 1, you go for it. CPJ never helped his defense in the fourth.

I agree with the AD, the right person for the GT job is one that calls people “retarded”, says “they must have just gotten off from their job at WalMart” insinuating that people who work for WalMart don’t make much money and are much lower than him making his millions, punch the opposing team fans in the face and generally acts like a bafoon. “Is this really the time to pin Tech’s problems on the triple-option offense?” The head coach is the coach of the ENTiRE football team. This IS the problem with CPJ. He doesn’t like defense, never has. Has no interest In defense. Wants to pretend that defense doesn’t exist…wants to simply “give” it and it’s responsibilities to someone else….a Dc. Fire’em by the dozen if need be. Being interested in defense would take precious time away from his sublime supreme nirvana of being wholly consumed in his brilliance of his invention….uh…er…interpretation of the all knowing all powerful all consuming triple option.
PULEEASE. This guy is a narcissistic jerk that has failed and now wants to deflect blame. Pure and simple. Simpletons who an only evaluate this jerk in terms of how many points the offense puts up are missing The point. Football is more than offense, and being consumed with one damages the other irreparably, no matter how many DC’s you hire.

Well, it is, of course, imperative at Tech to win the right way (i.e., playing by the rules) and have a head coach who represents the Institute well. That being said, Clemson’s first TD on Saturday resulted from Tech going for it on 4th and 1 from their won 37 and failing to make it. Those are not smart decisions and that was by no means an isolated incident.

Answer, none. He’s a poor recruiter Bob plain and simple. At Navy all of his players wanted to be in the military so there was no need to really recruit. At Georgia Southern he got the Division 1 fallouts or the kids that were not quite good enough,no real need to recruit. He does not recruit well because he never had to.

NEXT year we will be better at quarterback (or running back, or defensive end). Blah, blah, blah. How many times do you want to swallow this? He’s 16 and 16 in his last 32. How many of those 16 wins are against meaningful teams? How many of those 16 team we beat even ended the season with winning records? Do not focus on the offense. Johnson is the HEAD coach, not just the Offensive Coordinator. And he just cannot recruit – or thinks he does not NEED to recruit, because he is such a good coach. There are really only two reasons DRAD won’t fire Johnson before next season: either he does not have the money, or he has become infected with Dave Brain disease – i.e. he’s satisfied with mediocrity.

Well…no, it shouldn’t. “Clustering,” as it’s called in this story from the AP’s Paul Newberry, is neither a secret phenomenon nor a new one. According to Newberry, there are five BCS schools where more than half of the sophomores, juniors, and seniors on the football team have the same major: Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, UCLA, Wake Forest, and Baylor. If you broaden the clustering criteria to “half the players clustered within two or three majors,” that number grows to 39.

The recruiting program has to be overhauled, GT has to bring in some guys who can close who are the opposite of CPJ personality. CPJ is great, yes great but he is also his own worse enemy, with his arrogance and stubborness. Get a true QB Coach who can teach foot work and release. I wonder if Groh would still have his job if:
1. Tevin doesnt throw that INT in OT at VT.
2. Tevin doesn’t audible to a sneak in OT on 4th down vs. Miami.
3. Tevin doesn’t gain a paltry 4 yards on 19 carries vs. MTSU.
4. Tevin doesn’t screw up on 4th down in the first drive vs. Clemson, basically giving Clemson a TD.
5. Tevin doesn’t fail on 3rd and 4th down in every key situation this season.
6. Tevin doesn’t lead us to a doughnut in the last 30 min. of the Miami game.
7. Tevin doesn’t lead us to a FG in the 4th quarter of the Clemson.
8. Tevin doesn’t lead us to a paltry 7 points vs. MTSU in the 2nd half.
9. Tevin doesn’t go 3-10 with 2 INTs vs. UGA last year.

Jeff, the defense doesn’t operate in a vacuum. A QB (and offense) has to be at least moderately successful to take pressure off the defense (works both ways). Was our offense successful against MTSU? Let’s look at the 2nd half:

1. Drive #1: failed 3rd down pass attempt by Tevin.
2. Drive #2: Fumble on 1st play.
3. Drive #3: Tevin rushes for -2 yards on 3rd and 10. Failed 4th down pass.
4. Drive #4: Tevin TD. Hallelujah.
5. Drive #5: Tevin INT on first play.
6. Drive #6: Tevin sacked for 7 yard loss on 1st down, then incomplete passes on 2nd, 3rd AND 4th down.
7. Drive #7: Vad Lee goes 61 yards in 1:17.

Tevin sure doesn’t help that defense at all.

Tevin put the defense in a lot of tough situations? Really? I’ll give you that he put the D in a tough spot against VT, but, other than that, what are you talking about?

If anything, I would say that the defense has been putting Tevin in tough spots all season. When your QB is forced to score a touchdown on every drive because the defense can’t tackle, that’s a tough spot.

CPJ’s post-game analysis ALWAYS expresses needed improvements for Offense (not just D or ST). As well, a cursory view of his game-time sideline demeanor/comments actually shows more restraint for D & ST play than for miscues on O. By no means does he throw others under the bus before himself; much less does he seek scapegoats. He’s too blunt and bottom-lined for that.

And his famous stubbornness has yielded to major changes, firing two DCs, hiring ST coach, installing more passing plays even w/o a strong passer, etc.

It’s more than obvious he’s giving 100% to build a competitive team, and to respond to his “customers”. It’s a different world than at Navy or Ga Southern. He’s got at least thru next season to mend some fences, and as DRad and Jeff infer he deserves it.

Unless Johnson would accept 500k each year until his contract is paid in full then you’re stuck with the guy as well as awful recruiting. As elite is a Tech education is then all those high paid folks can suck it up and buyout Paul Right? GT is done until PJ is gone. Denial isn’t a great plan. CPJ is a solid coach. He has not solved the situation he finds himself in where the top players in the state of Georgia do not want to attend his school because of the conference Tech is in. For the first time in college football history there is less rivalry between schools and more between conferences. This has to be the reason because if you can play at the college level the NFL will find you period. It does not matter what school or conference you attend or are in especially when the truly gifted don’t graduate anyway.

Good point on recruiting today on 680. Trying to recruit GA and FL against GA, FL, Aub, AL, SC, Clemson is stupid. Stretch out in the NE and Midwest like Bobby Ross did and you’ll get more good athletes. I like GA players as much as anybody, but we’re getting killed trying to recruit against the big boys here.

Go Tech….Johnson article from 6th year at Navy….Johnson took over a program that had posted a 1-20 record the previous two years before his arrival in 2002. After a 2-10 mark in his first year, the Navy football program has achieved what many thought was no longer possible at an Academy, as Johnson has brought the Midshipmen back into the national spotlight with a 35-15 (.700) record over the last four years and has led Navy to a school-record four-straight bowl games and a school-record four-consecutive Commander-In-Chief’s Trophies. The 35 wins are the second most in program history over a four-year time span.

I for one am not pinning the blame on the offense, but for who want to tout the offensive prowess this year, here’s a little perspective to why they’ve scored so many points.

The ranking (points per game) for the defenses that GT has faced this year;

VT (43rd)

UVA (102nd)

MTSU (68th)
Clemson (73rd)

Of course D-rad supports the man HE hired. He cannot admit a mistake much less take responsibility for the NCAA violations. Read the NCAA report and related ajc article. (D-rad leaked the info to Johnson so the players could be “coached” – that’s funny – as to what to tell the NCAA investigators.)

One can delegate authority no responsibility. Our athletes would be more motivated if they had an Athletic Department which did not violate NCAA rules an have a championship vacated.

Then D-rad is snotty about the NCAA (who he knows is that way) and is his regulator for years.

And to boot, the Board seems not to care at all.

Can we set up more crappy coaches with GT gold retirement plans?

Tech has been made a laughing stock of the nation in football due to admin, not athletes, and people want to belief D-rad and his administration is doing just a fine job the problem is no adequate athletes want to come play at Tech. Maybe is because of this Admin and its poor choices.

No on cares that matters. This is a bureaucracy after all, where accountability is not required as long as you have excuses.

Nationally shaming Tech is not representative of Tech.

Really, after graduating a multitude of athletes from the School of Management, we can’t find one to manage the Athletic department. Someone more interested in Tech rather than setting crappy coaches up for retirement?

GT has your Golden Parachute if your a crappy coach, just sign up on North Avenue and enjoy. Only prerequisite is make excuses and say it “must not have been our day”, let me “go punch someone” and then “go hang myself” per pj, again very motivating to the athletes who are depending on you to motivate them.

Read the NCAA report if you care about this program. Otherwise enjoy the sand your head is in.

Apparently our Board is ? , I don’t even know the word to describe the magnitude of mismanagement represented. No remorse or apology over scholarships lost from D-rad, ACC championship vacated, not by what any athlete did, but the bureaucracy headed by D-rad.

How many empty seats will it take?

I may be the only one still in Johnson’s corner, but the reality is that he showed Groh great respect by ‘butting out’ of the defense for this long and letting the man coach. He also faced a difficult truth and fired a close friend, which many head coaches won’t do in the face of overwhelming evidence like Richt with Martinez ang arguably Bobo. Johnson DOES seem willing to adapt. The pistol is now part of the offense and I think he is clear on knowing that recruiting must improve dramatically. Georgie tek is on NCAA PROBATION in FOOTBALL back-to-back repeat Offenders of the Major Infractions Database.

Yes, Paul Johnson beat Georgia in his 1st season and won a ACC Championship Title; but he CHEATED. He talked to players under Major Infractions Investigation, although he has been head coach college football for 31 years, and knew he could not discuss it with the players while the investigation was just starting. They told him there was an investigation and he still interviewed the players in question, when he knew he could not talk to them. It has been standard for all 31 years he has been head coach not to talk to players in an NCAA Major Infractions Investigation.

He had to therefore VACATE the ACC Championship Title. If he had not LOST to UGA the year he won the ACC Title, he would have had to VACATE THAT WIN OVER US TOO. Only problem ? He LOST.

When you are the person responsible for a bad or questionable decision (hiring Paul Johnson) then you certainly are not going to make public statements that indicate that you have failed or made a mistake.

Thus basically demonstrating that you are an idiot and not a good judge of head coaching talent.

You will in fact do what Rad is doing and say all the right things, all the nice things, all the good PR things, so as to deflect blame and responsibility.

In his heart of hearts (which we and the media are not privy to) he knows that he quite possibly has hitched his wagon to the wrong horse.

He is in fact just delaying the inevitable.

Johnson will continue to disappoint in the recruiting front, and Tech’s program will continue to sink to D-2 levels.

Once he has lost the confidence of fans, boosters and potential recruits, he is doomed.

That time is very fast approaching, and it may be in December, after Tech goes 6-6 or 5-7.

Bring back Tenuta . . . I’m serious . . . I think the talent level we have now on D is about the same as it was back then. We have good D backs . . . Nobody can last forever back there, though. Throw the kitchen sink to get a pass rush and some negative yardage plays. Even if we still give up a lot of points, at least it’s more fun to watch and it feels like you at least have a chance. Our defense is a sitting duck right now without a pass rush.

Hose$hit the right person for the job. What is DRAD supposed to say. This program is in shambles and it’s not getting better.

Gailey lost all 7 years to UGA, the worst being the first year, 51-7, with O’Leary’s players, got much worse with his recruits and we had a QB who couldn’t count to 4

Just wish PJ would tweak the offense by hiring Air Force O.C. and let him add some new formations
to the offense as well as a passing attack. PJ can still call all the plays!

you can’t work against on a running offense all week and expect the DB’s to stop a passing attack on Sat. If the other team was running this HS offense, we would not be firing the DC. CPJ is a DC killer. It is going to be ugly when everyone realize CPJ is the problem.

AS long as the coach gones for it on 4th and 1 and (Dont get it)the defense will always be 2 tired to be a force 2 stop any offense. and i mean ANY offense.FRom start 2 finish the whole D looks tired and way out of conditioning and i mean way———— out of shape. No reason 4 them 2 be so slow – - – - – -.Please someone tell that number 6 or 8 to stop putting his arm out everytime the opposing qt over throws the rec. that he is covering and thinking he was the reason was a good play .When he gets (Burns) which he does a lot he puts his head down and walks really slow back to the huddle and does not put his arm out when this happens 2 him.

There is no way you can have a decent defense when you have a option offense when there only option is to pratice against it (option). You will never be able 2 won on regular bais.the whole off season is what they pratice against is the option.Defense you will never have TECH sorry

AMG,

Your team is the team on NCAA PROBATION in FOOTBALL back-to-back Repeat Offenders of the Major Infractions Database, has LOST to our current coach 10 of the 11 games, is ranked # 52 in Scout.com Recruiting Rankings every year of Paul Johnson, cannot graduate your recruits with the worse graduation rate, and plays in a stadium half the size of our Stadium with empty seats after offering 4 cokes, 2 hot dogs, 2 bags of boiled peanuts, and a free parking pass.

Well… I hope so for your sake Dan. But I would suggest that you don’t tie that knot too strong if in fact the U.S.S. Johnson is sinking and it’s more than a “bump in the road” as you would have us believe. But we still have offensive problems Dan. Who’s going to fire the offensive coordinator? Oh, that’s right. It’s CPJ isn’t it? Maybe being in denial isn’t such a bad thing after all? One thing is for sure though, even if we continue to get our heads bashed in we can still go to Bobby Dodd and have some more “fun on the Flats”. I can’t think of a better way to spend a fall afternoon. GO JACKETS!!!

Drad has 10.2 million reasons that he CAN’T fire Johnson. We’re stuck with him unfortunately.

I remember when Johnson was hired the rationale was that GT “can’t win doing what everyone else does”. Still scratching my head over that one. What would lead one to believe that this offense and that coach was the answer. Looking at the results some other coaches that might have listened had GT called it really makes you wonder. Kevin Sumlin and Dana Holgerson (sic) at WVU come to mind. And the fact that CPJ has never had to really recruit before arriving at GT makes the hire all the more confusing. You do have to recruit in the ACC. This offense will never allow GT to recruit the talent it needs to compete with Clemson, FSU, VT, NCST, and now even Duke might become a threat. Furthermore, look back at PJ’s history and you’ll see he has NEVER had a defense. THis hire was a monumental screwup. If he lives through the life of this contract just how bare will the cupboard be?

ughh send him off. so sick of this faux offense. get a real offense hat the fans actually want to watch. Get an offense that recruits will actually want to play in. Get an offense that can actually score in the last 2 minutes of a game when down.

I find it funny that all of you critics are always so negative. It takes defense to win titles. We have an offense that has averaged 30+ pts. a game and has lead the nation in many stats. But without a defense that can hold teams to less than 30+ pts. per game especially when they are close in the last quarter tells me that we need to change. Remember the days of R. Ball? Our offense stunk, but the defense kept us in many games.
