After 2-4 start, Tech coach Paul Johnson fired his second defensive coordinator. (AJC/Curtis Compton)
In his first two seasons at Georgia Tech, Paul Johnson went 20-7, including 12-4 in the ACC, and won a conference title (the whims of NCAA investigators notwithstanding).
In the 2½ years since, he is 16-16, including 10-10 in the ACC, and has lost nine of his past 13. He also just fired his second defensive coordinator, hoping to salvage a season that has some fans grumbling and wondering if those early results were some aberration.
Yet to be determined: Is this merely a step back before another eventual ACC title run (most optimistic) or ugly foreshadowing of a Bill Lewis collapse (most pessimistic).
Welcome to today’s sports world, which can be best summed up as: What a beautiful morning/Wait I felt A Raindrop/The Sky Is Falling! (Elapsed time: 12 minutes.)
For what it’s worth, the sky isn’t falling in Dan Radakovich’s office. The Georgia Tech athletic director affirmed Tuesday that he has not lost confidence in Johnson as the school’s football coach, nor has he given any thought to making a change in that office.
“I know there’s some erosion in support right now, but the Falcons are 5-0, and there was erosion in their fan base last year, too, when they didn’t win in the playoffs,” Radakovich said. “That’s the thing about sports now. People can express their opinion quickly.

Dan Radakovich said Johnson's resume makes him worthy of being given the benefit of the doubt. (AJC photo)
“I have confidence in Paul. He’s the right person for this job, and he will continue to move the program forward. We have to get through this bump in the road. We still have six games left for a chance to have a positive season.”
In at least one respect, being a football coach isn’t different from any other job: When somebody’s tenure begins with signs of very-good-to-greatness, the boss is more likely to give that employee the benefit of the doubt.
Johnson has earned that benefit.
What he accomplished in his first two seasons, including Tech playing in its first BCS bowl game and a first-season win at Georgia, went far beyond what anybody could have projected.
Critics suggest he has made consecutive defensive coordinators, Dave Wommack and Al Groh, scapegoats for his own failings. But apply some logic here: Wommack was fired after the 2009 ACC title season (hence: not a scapegoat). Groh was fired after a three-game losing streak that saw the Jackets score 36, 28 and 31 points but allow 42, 49 and 47. There were late-game defensive collapses both this year and late last season.
Is this really the time to pin Tech’s problems on the triple-option offense?
For as much as Johnson’s offense tends to be a lightning rod for criticism in these just-chuck-it days of football, the Jackets have scored fewer than 14 points in seven of 59 games under Johnson and fewer than 20 in 14 of 59. Overall, they have scored an average of 30.5 points.
Is Johnson ultimately responsible for whether his team wins or loses? Of course. But Radakovich doesn’t see any of the other signs an athletic director looks for when contemplating a coaching change, most notably a lack of effort or hopelessness. “It’s not like we’re getting blown out,” he said. “It’s not like we’re being physically overmatched every week.”
He said he understands the criticism. He expected it. He fields questions at booster functions and reads weekly critiques in his email’s inbox. He just doesn’t agree with them.
“Paul has demonstrated to me that he can coach and he can pull a team together,” Radakovich said. “And it’s important to note that it’s not just here. His entire career [including Georgia Southern and Navy] to me has been as big a positive as anything. He has shown that he’s able to sustain success in an organization over a long period of time.”
Radakovich and Johnson speak daily. The AD was a sounding board for him when Johnson was considering firing Groh.
Radakovich: “It was not an easy decision for Paul, and I look at my role as being someone who can give him a 360-degree view of things. But he’s the head football coach, and I want to give him the opportunity to have the staff that he sees fit.”
If the losses continue, it’s logical to assume that Johnson ultimately would pay a price. But Tech isn’t nearly at that point yet.

Bring back Tenuta . . . I’m serious . . . I think the talent level we have now on D is about the same as it was back then. We have good D backs . . . Nobody can last forever back there, though. Throw the kitchen sink to get a pass rush and some negative yardage plays. Even if we still give up a lot of points, at least it’s more fun to watch and it feels like you at least have a chance. Our defense is a sitting duck right now without a pass rush.

Gailey lost all 7 years to UGA, the worst being the first year, 51-7, with O’Leary’s players, got much worse with his recruits and we had a QB who couldn’t count to 4

Just wish PJ would tweak the offense by hiring Air Force O.C. and let him add some new formations
to the offense as well as a passing attack. PJ can still call all the plays!

you can’t work against on a running offense all week and expect the DB’s to stop a passing attack on Sat. If the other team was running this HS offense, we would not be firing the DC. CPJ is a DC killer. It is going to be ugly when everyone realize CPJ is the problem.

AS long as the coach gones for it on 4th and 1 and (Dont get it)the defense will always be 2 tired to be a force 2 stop any offense. and i mean ANY offense.FRom start 2 finish the whole D looks tired and way out of conditioning and i mean way———— out of shape. No reason 4 them 2 be so slow – - – - – -.Please someone tell that number 6 or 8 to stop putting his arm out everytime the opposing qt over throws the rec. that he is covering and thinking he was the reason was a good play .When he gets (Burns) which he does a lot he puts his head down and walks really slow back to the huddle and does not put his arm out when this happens 2 him.

There is no way you can have a decent defense when you have a option offense when there only option is to pratice against it (option). You will never be able 2 won on regular bais.the whole off season is what they pratice against is the option.Defense you will never have TECH sorry

AMG,
Your team is the team on NCAA PROBATION in FOOTBALL back-to-back Repeat Offenders of the Major Infractions Database, has LOST to our current coach 10 of the 11 games, is ranked # 52 in Scout.com Recruiting Rankings every year of Paul Johnson, cannot graduate your recruits with the worse graduation rate, and plays in a stadium half the size of our Stadium with empty seats after offering 4 cokes, 2 hot dogs, 2 bags of boiled peanuts, and a free parking pass.

Well… I hope so for your sake Dan. But I would suggest that you don’t tie that knot too strong if in fact the U.S.S. Johnson is sinking and it’s more than a “bump in the road” as you would have us believe. But we still have offensive problems Dan. Who’s going to fire the offensive coordinator? Oh, that’s right. It’s CPJ isn’t it? Maybe being in denial isn’t such a bad thing after all? One thing is for sure though, even if we continue to get our heads bashed in we can still go to Bobby Dodd and have some more “fun on the Flats”. I can’t think of a better way to spend a fall afternoon. GO JACKETS!!!

Drad has 10.2 million reasons that he CAN’T fire Johnson. We’re stuck with him unfortunately.

I remember when Johnson was hired the rationale was that GT “can’t win doing what everyone else does”. Still scratching my head over that one. What would lead one to believe that this offense and that coach was the answer. Looking at the results some other coaches that might have listened had GT called it really makes you wonder. Kevin Sumlin and Dana Holgerson (sic) at WVU come to mind. And the fact that CPJ has never had to really recruit before arriving at GT makes the hire all the more confusing. You do have to recruit in the ACC. This offense will never allow GT to recruit the talent it needs to compete with Clemson, FSU, VT, NCST, and now even Duke might become a threat. Furthermore, look back at PJ’s history and you’ll see he has NEVER had a defense. THis hire was a monumental screwup. If he lives through the life of this contract just how bare will the cupboard be?

I find it funny that all of you critics are always so negative. It takes defense to win titles. We have an offense that has averaged 30+ pts. a game and has lead the nation in many stats. But without a defense that can hold teams to less than 30+ pts. per game especially when they are close in the last quarter tells me that we need to change. Remember the days of R. Ball? Our offense stunk, but the defense kept us in many games.
