Al Groh’s problems at Georgia Tech weren’t pure ‘fantasy’

Al Groh's teaching methods and schemes failed from day one at Tech. (Johnny Crawford/AJC)

Al Groh's teaching methods, schemes failed from outset. (Johnny Crawford)

Al Groh was a mistake. He was Paul Johnson’s mistake. It took about 2½ years for the Georgia Tech head coach to realize that.

Groh, who had success as a defensive coordinator in the NFL but was a disaster at Georgia Tech from the outset, was fired Monday by Johnson, who has seen the Jackets regress since Groh’s hiring in 2010.

It’s not surprising Johnson would fire an assistant. He fired Groh’s predecessor, Dave Wommack, even after winning an ACC championship in 2009. He fired a coach (Groh) whose defense had given up 42, 49 and 47 points in the last three games, collapsed late in overtime defeats to Virginia Tech and Miami and allowed 510 yards in offense to Middle Tennessee State.

The stunning part is that Johnson did this now. I had been asked several times by readers over the past two weeks whether I believed Groh would make it through the season. My answer always was yes, simply because it’s so rare for college assistants to get fired during the year. Clearly, it had become an unworkable situation.

Groh can’t complain that he wasn’t given a chance. Johnson gave him more than enough rope, even while reaffirming before the season that the defense had to get better.

Let me take you back to 2010. Georgia Tech lost 28-25 to a Kansas team that a week earlier had lost to North Dakota State 6-3.

After the game, I asked how Groh how an opponent (Kansas) that had managed only one field goal in 12 possessions against North Dakota State could score four touchdowns against Georgia Tech.

He bristled. The response: “That’s fantasy football. I just deal with what happened today. … That’s not the game coaches play. Coaches play the game that’s played today. The rest is talk radio, those guys who have all the answers.”

The problem being, it wasn’t fantasy. It was real. If it was fantasy, Groh would still have a job. But his teaching methods did not translate well to players and the change to a 3-4 defense also was questionable, given the Jackets’ difficulty in recruiting that kind of personnel (particularly a big enough and good enough defensive tackle).

Johnson is trying to save a season that has spun out of control since an impressive early season win over Virginia. I don’t know that this will do it. But removing Groh certainly removes a problem. For the increasing amount of abuse Johnson has taken lately, it’s not like the Jackets have been losing games because of his offense.

I hope that Al Groh was the problem. But I suspect there’s also a lack of talent, due to poor recruiting, that accounts for some of Tech’s defensive issues.

Which is worst at Tech – defensive coaching or talent level? They are both pretty bad, though Steve Spurrier thinks D1 talent in Georgia is as good as it is in Florida. The GA schools should be able to get good players and let Spurrier get what’s left over, but that’s not the case.

If Tech had any defense at all, they would be 4-1. That last series against VA Tech in regulation was one of the worst I’ve ever seen.

Since CPJ came to Tech, the offense has scored 14 or more points in 55 of the 59 games played. The defense has held the other team to less than 14 points in only 7 of those 59 games. Three of those games came in 2008 – Mississippi State, Duke, and Gardner-Webb. Two were in 2009 – NC and UVA.
One in 2010 -SC State and the last one Presbyterian this year. Dave Womack was DC in 2008. Al Groh 2009 – today.

Al Groh was only a small fraction of the problem at Georgia Tech. CPJ was not the right hire to begin with and should never have came to the flats. In todays’ society, high school kids want to get to the NFL and a high school triple option offense just doesn’t help in that aspect. That’s why the Alabamas, the Clemsons, the LSUs of the world invade our state and get great recruits and Tech is left with two star players. Chan Gailey was a garbage coach for Tech, but at least he began to bring good talent on the flats. CPJ won with them, but now his talent is showing, (or lack thereof). Wake Forest was a handful a few years ago with a similar offense, but realized that in order to recruit better players, they had to expand their offense to appeal higher rated recruits.

Bring back Ted Roof. He was excellent defensive coach. I think all Tech fans and myself being one all thought that was going to be a very good season. However, the D has not lived up to expectations. Now if PJ will start playing VL more to give him the exposure for next year, maybe things can be pieced back together. After watching the VT game, I said Tech would be lucky to win 6 games this year, maybe 7. It looks pretty good that they won’t win 6. Right now, I am not even sure they can beat Duke

David

You can’t have a good defense without good defensive linemen. Paul Johnson can’t recruit, that is the real issue. Now Johnson buy out is so large gt can’t fire him. The next person that should be fired is the AD.

Tech Legacy

October 8th, 2012
4:23 pm

I’m surprised that this happened now, but clearly, things were falling apart. I still think the biggest issue is recruiting. Tech doesn’t have enough good players. I don’t think it’s necessarily a scheme thing. It doesn’t matter what you run if the players don’t or can’t execute better than the opposition.

Jimbo Fisher

Special teams played huge too though. Our defense got 2 big turnovers, and then our offense/special teams couldn’t put up any points. A blocked field goal and falling down on your own 2yd line will never ever put a W in the win column.

Buzz Belle

Great move! The points the offense get is enough to win most games if the defense stops the other team. Simple as that. Would love to see Tenuta back but that won’t happen. The 2 minute drill at the end of a game takes about 6-8 minutes to get within a field goal range..no passing expertise. I guess now CPJ will take over the defense, already does the offense, soon to take over the special teams and kickers. Only one coach required at Tech since he is so smart and gifted. Johnson ain’t the problem. Tell me a program who has put up more points in the ACC than the Jackets. We’ve run in to a few teams that have stopped us, but that is football. If we had the defense we had back in the Reggie Ball days, when we couldn’t score, we would be conference champs every year. That is the plain simple facts. As for you UGA retards, you might want to look a little closer at how the 3-4 has worked out for you. Even FL Atl ran the ball down your throats. GT football will never again be what it was in its prime during the Dodd and SEC era.
There are several reasons such as the mistake of leaving the SEC, the changing times of football recruiting, the players themselves, the fact that the GT alumni and fan
base is no longer the same are only some of the factors.

All GT fans should realize that it is what it is now and either accept the fact that we will be at best a mid-tier ACC program or find another team to root for. The current problems with the defense along with CPJ`s personal preference for an option offense can be improved with the right adjustments. However, there is only so much that can be done and that will never get GT back to the level of a consistent high profile program.

Simply saying “recruiting” is bad in NOT the answer people. (it is bad no doubt) But….

The Johnson could walk into any 5 star kids house with a pound of blow and 3 whooers…and say “hey come to GT, where we run the simply cannot defend vaunted Trippple Option!!!” And they look at him and say “WTF is that? Do they run that in the NFL?

As mediocre a coach as Richt is, he gets loads of talent yr in an yr out. Why, because he runs a system that puts players in the NFL. And yes….piss poor akademick standards plays into it just a bit too.

The only way to play is the 4-3. If you arent getting 5 star athletes for the d-line you cant play the 3-4. only a few schools outside the SEC can play a true 3-4. As for the offense, its doing fine. If the defense wouldnt give up the consistent 3rd down and get the ball back, the offense would be averaging 35 ppg. That would win most game. Fix the D and tech will be okay. GO VAD

Al Groh was just part of the problem. Tech has a hard headed coach in Paul Johnson that thinks it’s his way or the highway as far as his offense goes and he does a poor job recruiting on both sides of the ball. For all the Chan haters, Johnson’s record after the same number of games is almost exactly the same as Chan and many of Johnson’s wins came in his first two years with Chan’s players.

Goodbye Big Al. Now for the rest of the season, we will probably lose 5 out of 6, but who is counting and who really cares about this season, this season is over, now for next year we must do better on recruiting, we need defense players, we need quarterbacks that can run and throw not run and fumble. Also need receivers that can catch the ball (call Chan, he recruited some darn good receivers). Now the biggest problem with recruiting, we have to compete against Georgia,Auburn,Alabama,Florida,Florida State,South Caroline, and Clemson. Did I leave anyone out? Funny Clemson has a top ten recruit out of Georgia already for next year out of Grayson, can’t remember his name. If you were a player would you go to Tech if you had all of these other schools recruiting you. I doubt it. So recruiting next year has got to be a priority.

It’s about time that Johnson was getting heat some heat at Tech. It should have started after he blew the 2009 game against Georgia. Tech’s biggest games are Georgia, Clemson, Virginia Tech, FSU, and the bowl. His record…

1-3 versus UGA and staring at a likely 1-4
4-2 versus Clemson
1-4 versus VT
2-0 versus FSU but they roll back on the schedule next year
0-4 versus bowl opponents

That’s 8-13 with half the wins coming against Clemson (including two in one year). If you add-in his record against Miami (a second-tier rival for the Jackets) it’s 9-17. If you only count UGA, Clemson, and VT it’s 6-9.

That’s bad, folks.

The defense is by far the main issue. They have simply looked lost for most of this season. Also not sure why people are so down on the talent of recruits – in looking at Rivals recruiting numbers over the past 6 years , I don’t see a big change.

The offense is doing OK – but should really hum once Vad or Justin gets under center. Then you will see the ball in the air more. I like Tevin but lets face it, he’s slow, has not been great on the option reads and simply cannot throw the ball with any consistency – and we are still putting up good offensive numbers. Might as well support CPJ anyway as we are certainly not going to buy his contract out anytime soon.

Stick your hand in the box, Paul. See how far you can take the pain.
And think of your middle linebacker – name of Drummond – and remember the pain. Never seen a MLB so statuesque – in the way a statue stand there, stands there, stands there.
Of course, it isn’t only Mr. Drummond, the D overall just can’t cut Division I (or whatever they are calling the ‘big leagues’ nowadays) football. Fast, tough and smart offenses are everywhere. Even at Middle Tennessee State. And on the O side at Tech, you have moderately slow, fragile and simple-mindedness; you know, dive play, dive play, option right, punt (or fumble).

Georgie tek beat Jim Donnan to have him fired, and now falls on its collective face 1-10 vs our current coach, and we are supposed to talk about Georgie tek has maybe an issue with their defense ?

There have been all these blogs about how the program has dropped-off, plateaued against his competition, not beat the top teams in The SEC nor even against other conferences. Jim Donnan was fired by Mike Adam$ because as Ben Dukes said, he did not beat his rival competition. As Ben Dukes points out Steve O. Spurrier has been at South Carolina starting 2005, and there is no argument anyone can put forth that we were better than USCe 2011 when they beat us last season and made # 9 in AP Poll, while we lost to them head-to-head and made # 19 beating no team who made the Top 25 – in fact losing all 4. South Carolina today, is equivalent to what the vols or Florida was when Jim Donnan was fired. We average # 8 Scout.com recruiting rankings and South Carolina # 20 starting the same year 2005. We have had huge attrition across the board of the 107 Mark Richt signed who could be playing 2012, and are not. Today, we have 66 scholarship players plus a transfer-in who are available. If we don’t play Chris Conley, Quayvon Hicks, Mark Beard, Jay Rome, Malcolm Mitchell at wide receiver, Sheldon Dawson, Josh Dawson, Josh Harvey-Clemons, Richard Samuel at linebacker, or a back-up Quarterback when our QB states he did not sleep for 2 days prior to the only game on our schedule all 12 games and goes out there with yet another Aaron Murray fumble, another Aaron Murray interception (and several more which should have been intercepted) while again he runs 5 times for minus yards including yet again 2 more sacks – why have there been 30 who have transferred-out of these 107 signed scholarships Mark Richt brought in here ?

Yes, we have more talent than Steve Spurrier. Would you say it is fair to say that Steve Spurrier at 4-4 against Mark Richt, averaging one-third the recruiting rankings has out X and O Mark Richt ?

I believe you can make the point that we have off-field issues which are being shoved under the rug, to avert further embarrassment, that have contributed here to us not beating the top teams.

Starting with Kentucky in 2007, when that was 6 seasons ago, we have not beat an SEC team who made a winning SEC record.

After Auburn # 9 in 2006, when that was 7 seasons ago, we have not beat a team making the Top 10.

34-19 the last 4 years, same as Georgie tek # 31 in the nation.

35-13 Jim Donnan his last 4 years, # 12 in the nation.

For years now, we have been hearing about Mark Richt in terms of his NUMBER OF WINS.

Mark Richt has played 5 more games and not only won 1 fewer but lost 6 more than Jim Donnan – their last 4 years compared.

Even including coming in here and cleaning up Ray Goff’s mess his 1st season – all 5 of Jim Donnan’s years here, comparing that to Mark Richt his last 5 years here :

19 Losses Jim Donnan all 5 years he was here
21 Losses Mark Richt all 5 of his last 5 years here

This is the discussion we get to all the time across this great internet. Jim Donnan was fired for not winning the big games at the time. Mark Richt earned a little give on that with Jim Donnan’s recruits, for Jim Donnan most assuredly did not leave this Top 10 All-Time College Football Program in Wins in a depleted state. He just did not win the games he was expected to win.

I don’t know if you can say we were expected to win the game Saturday night. USCe has a running back and a real dual-threat quarterback, an OL and a DL and Secondary and special teams featuring great players. We matched-up with them, but were out-coached by a guy who has out-coached Ray Goff, Mark Richt and Jim Donnan.

How Mark Richt gets these recruits to come here, when he mis-manages their talent like he has for 12 years of this, and has not in 12 years won as well as all these other SEC programs who have won all these other games in the Mark Richt era against teams who made the Top 10, is anyone’s guess. But, for me, I think they like his forgive approach.

Mark Richt doesn’t think this is any big deal.

He is making no changes to anything.

Again.

He’s satisfied.

Plateaued with his recruiting, game plans, preparation, soft discipline and harsh punishment, and coaching staff or lack thereof.

# 8 in The SEC all 12 years to-date beating teams making Top 10

We’re # 8 in just our own conference of beating teams who made the Top 10 all the entire Mark Richt era.

17 games

Won 3

There are all these posters who purport to state that a Top 10 All-Time College Football Program like ours cannot get and does not deserve any better.

Compare this now, to Jim Donnan, they say.

I find it hard to believe that a Top 10 Program cannot deserve the entitlement of better than # 8 in The SEC at beating top teams in the entire Mark Richt era.

Yes, we’ve plateaued. One day, you will all say I said it 1st – about 7 years ago I said it. You have listed excuses for 7 years, and now you all agree with me without one of you saying I said it to you for all 7 of these years of being unable to beat the top teams while our off-field issues continue with a coach satisfied, and very few fans.

Jim Donnan was fired because he could not beat his top rivals at the time, and specifically Georgie tek. That is why we’re supposed to not have this brought up by Jeff Schultz.

CAG should’a been fired end of LAST season. I think we can all agree on that.

Jeff,

You got your panties in a bunch when AG was mean to you, you poor thing.

Al Groh is gone but you still run funny and throw like a girl. I mean it in a nice way, though.

If Tenuta is hired back you may lose most of your Alum support. Next to Bill Lewis, was there a more hated, arrogant coach at GT? And he does not like to recruit. Not what you guys need right now.

The ship is still sinking at GA Tech. Throwing Al Groh overboard may have delayed the sinking, but will not stop it. Eventually CPJ has to go. He is the one in charge, and ultimately responsible for their poor showing. Can’t see things really improving that much in the short term at North Avenue, until Johnson goes.

George O’Leary is head coach at UCF, who beat Mark Richt, making $ 1.4 million dollars a year.

Get somebody that can teach a defensive back how to cover a receiver instead of letting them catch the ball then tackling them.

Seems to me that Johnson’s is very mistake prone and he’s now desperate to save his own job. Groh – mistake. How about going for it on 4th down on the very first possession in your own end – after another rotten attempt at drawing the opposition off sides and then thinking long about it in a time out. Still made the MISTAKE. Then how about the safety after a botched kickoff return – why wouldn’t you run a dive to get a couple yards before trying to beat the defense around the corner?? MISTAKE.

IF CPJ gets handed his exit visa, and IF you want a strong hard hitting defense, and IF you want someone who understands a balance in offense and IF you want a coach who players will want to come play for (recruiting)……Bill Cowher.
