LIVE: Falcons try to provide some relief for Atlanta fans

LANDOVER, Md. — Good morning. It’s the Sunday of what is shaping up as one of the worst sports weekends in Atlanta sports history. (I don’t want to declare it as the worst. Too much competition.)
On Friday, the Braves lost their wild card playoff game to St. Louis 6-3. On Saturday, Georgia got bodyslammed by South Carolina 35-7 and Georgia Tech lost to Clemson 47-31.
Today, it’s the Falcons’ turn to . . . well, what exactly?
They face the Washington Redskins. On paper, this is a game they should win. The Falcons are 4-0 for only the third time in franchise history (1986, 2004, 2012) and have one of the best offenses in the NFL. The Redskins are 2-2, their only wins this season have come over New Orleans (0-4) and Tampa Bay (1-3) and they have one of the worst defenses in the the NFL (29th in total defense, 31st in pass defense, 27th in scoring defense).
But if the backdrop of the Atlanta Sports Weekend From Hades isn’t enough reason to cause concern about today’s game, here are a few things that might:
• Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3) can make plays and has been remarkably efficient for a rookie, completing 69.4 percent of his passes with four touchdown passes and only one interception in 124 attempts. He is averaging 250.8 yards passing per game, but he has been sacked eight times. He also is rushing for 58.5 yards per game (and has four touchdown runs).
• The Falcons’ pass protection, a question coming into the season, was a problem against Carolina last week. Quarterback Matt Ryan was sacked seven times. It needs to be better today, especially given that it’s a road game and crowd noise could become a factor.
• It’s not easy to stay undefeated in the NFL, no matter who the opponent is. That was reaffirmed in the Carolina game. The Panthers, particularly quarterback Cam Newton, were emotionally down and beat up coming into the game. But the Falcons were fortunate to get out of the Georgia Dome with a 30-28 win — only because of a last-minute field goal drive, helped by a 59-yard pass from Ryan to Roddy White.
For what it’s worth, it has been cold and drizzling in the Washington D.C. area, so we’ll see how that affects the two teams today.
What to look for? Mostly whether the Falcons come out firing against the Washington secondary, which includes our good friend (slight sarcasm), DeAngelo Hall. Hey, maybe Hall and coach Mike Smith can rumble again.

I have a bright and cheery disposition because our 4-0 Atlanta Falcons are about to make it 5-0 against the Washington Redskins. Do you think lessor sports like baseball or lessor teams like UGA can somehow affect the mighty NFL falcons? Pishaw.. In life there are few constants but NFL supremacy over all other sports is one of them.
The only things standing between the Falcons and 5-0 is their own execution of the playbook. They are clearly the more talented and veteran team. We have the better coaching staff and we have the better QB. All we have to do is execute..and After last weeks lackluster first half, I think we will!

Looks like the Troll of the Blog has slunk out from under his bridge to bring more of his philosophy of failure, creed of ignorance, and gospel of envy to the masses. Seriously, JSS was a complete failure and now he comes on these blogs to troll everyone here who just want to have a good time and talk sports.
And he thinks he’s better than US? What kind of a miserable waste of a human being gets his jollies off of trying to make other people feel bad? They say misery loves company, and because JSS was a miserable failure, he’s doing everything he can to take everyone else down with him.
Look at this complete failure of life. What a sad, pathetic little man, walking through life, a shrinking circle of people who still put up with him, fired from job after job the last few years (oh, I’m sorry, “downsized”), always wondering out loud how someone as “brilliant” and as “wonderful” as him is completely unappreciated by all of the stupid “normals” around him, yet secretly, in the back of his mind, knowing how utterly lacking he is in every aspect of existence.
What a piece of work, to have to come on these blogs and make him self feel better by trying to cause misery in others. Or, at the very least, mild annoyance. How sad.

After 3 weeks, Michael Vick had more turnovers by himself than all but one team in the NFL had as entire teams. After 4 weeks, Matt Ryan is rated #1 in passing efficiency in the NFL and Vick is close to the bottom.

Just wondering which one of these Atlanta sports fans were more embarrassed by, the Braves “stinking it up” on national TV or the GA DAWGS looking like WAC contenders on national TV? I’m having trouble deciding myself. Those are fairly equal, but the “bad call” brought even more attention to the Braves bad play, and Messyburger and Herb Kirkstreet made a huge issue of the DAWGS being so inept in big games.

The Falcons have let that 4-0 start get to their heads. Can’t do that in this league. It’s a long season and every game is going to test you. It’s only a matter of time before Washington starts clicking in offense and RGIII rips us to shreds. We need Ryan to get it in gear and for Julio to break some tackles! Both defenses are playing well but like I said, if the Falcons keep putting their defense in bad positions and out on the field for too long then they’ll get tired and be in trouble. The best defense is a good offense. Turner needs to stop tip toeing and Julio needs to catch a few balls and Ryan needs to stop overthrowing his target.

Ravens, Giants and Steelers not exactly top 5 defenses. The Steelers have played 4 games, 2 of which they gave up more than 30, one of which came against the Raiders (who aren’t exactly an offensive machine, last I checked).
One constant for VIck is the turnovers, though, as he managed another two today.
Glad you’re liking Vick in Philly. Matt Ryan, who’s a front runner for MVP, is just fine in my book here.

I still remember William Andrews running over the Broncos Foley as he was heading down the sideline for a TD. Andrews, Cain, and Riggs….with Riggs as a backup….on that team. Jim Mitchell at TE. Kenn at OT. Van Note at center (still not sure why Van Note is not in the HOF). Jenkins and Jackson at WR. Humphries at DE….and a very good secondary. That team should have won a Super Bowl….but Dallas stole it from them….and Falcon fans back then. This team is good…but I am not sure it is better.

For all the “Baltimore fans” on the ajc blogs. Ravens won today. As usual, led by Joe Flacco’s 13/27, 187 yards, 55.6 passer rating. Just like in the playoffs. Flacco’s able to overcome the handicap of playing with Ray Rice and that terrible Raven defense.

The difference between most NFL teams today is slight……with the QB position being the main difference between good and lesser teams….and the Falcons obviously have one of the top QBs in the NFL game today. Ryan is a difference maker. Without him, the Falcons would be one of the ordinary teams in the middle of the pack.

Had to get your two cent in JSS? I see the big bad name stealers got you crying! You told Schultz on them! Lol. I said nothing to you…this was a convo between me and PuppyNole….but like always you stink your fat angus in someone elses business! Wonder why they steal your punkangus name? Mrs. I am not a fan….yet you still here….why again? The consensus is that you are not well liked around these blogs…..check it out read through them….not a mistake that they tease you and you go running to Schultz…..tough guy!
