Falcons are easy highlight in Atlanta’s dark sports weekend

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After another playoff cameo role by the Braves on Friday and the ugliness by whatever remains of Georgia and Georgia Tech on a college football Saturday, the Falcons didn’t need to accomplish much Sunday to achieve some degree of popularity.

Almost anything north of humiliation would’ve been an improvement.

They provided more than that. They won.

They weren’t great. The quarterback threw a pick-six in the second quarter. A fumbled snap ended their next possession. The offense made the NFL’s 29th ranked defense look almost impressive at times. The defense allowed Washington’s far lesser of two rookie quarterbacks, Kirk Cousins to throw a 77-yard touchdown pass (and he hadn’t taken a snap all season).

So they weren’t perfect. Or close. And yet: They’re still perfect.

They rallied with a 17-point fourth quarter to beat the Washington Redskins 24-17.

They are 5-0 for the first time in franchise history — this after being 4-0 for only the third time in franchise history. Suddenly, they are punching through ceilings.

Are they great? No. It’s a little early to phone Don Shula and ask if he’s worried about the Falcons posing a threat to the 1972 Miami Dolphins. (Hey, once you win five, how tough can 11 more be?) But in the last two games against Carolina and Washington, the Falcons managed to pull out victories in games where they seemed less than whole. That is something that really good (and potentially great) teams do.

“I’ve said since the beginning of the season that this is the best team I’ve been on as a Falcon,” said tight end Tony Gonzalez. “It might be the best team I’ve ever been on as a player. But it doesn’t mean anything? No. It feels good to be 5-0, but I’ve been 9-0 and lost in the first round of the playoffs [in Kansas City in 2003]. So we just have to go one week at a time. I know that doesn’t sound sexy but it is what it is. We’ve got a target on our back now.”

The Falcons: The hunted. Let that sink in. There’s only one other unbeaten team left — Houston (4-0), which plays Monday night.

When the NFL schedule has stretched into the second month and a team still hasn’t lost, nit-picking should be held to a minimum.

“They’re playing with a tenacity I haven’t seen in the last couple of years,” said former running back Warrick Dunn, now one of the team’s minority owners. “They’re playing with aggressiveness. When you win games where you really don’t play that great, it’s a positive sign. It shows that you can respond to adversity. That means something as you move down the road and the games get bigger.”

The Falcons sputtered offensively until late in the third quarter. The exception was Gonzalez, who had one of those just-stupid-great games: 13 catches, 123 yards, one touchdown, as a 36-year-old. The Redskins were intent on bracketing Roddy White and Julio Jones on the outside but they couldn’t do anything about Gonzalez in the belly of their defense.

In the Falcons’ first five possessions, they had three punts and two turnovers. They had only seven points after eight drives, but started to take over late in the third.

“What do you want talk to us for — we stunk,” White joked when media approached.

Not coincidentally, the momentum shifted  after Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III was knocked out of the game by Sean Weatherspoon. (It was a clean hit: Weatherspoon crashed into Griffin as the rookie ran out of the pocket and was sliding down. The back of Griffin’s head appear to come down on Jonathan Babineaux, causing a concussion.) Cousins took advantage of a breakdown in the secondary, throwing a 77-yard TD pass to Santana Moss. But Matt Bryant tied it at 17-17 with a 53-yard field goal and Michael Turner’s 13-yard touchdown with 2:46 left gave the Falcons the lead.

The best teams find a way to get it done.

“It’s the first time since I’ve been here that we’re just going out there and expecting to win,” White said.

That’s five out of five. And this weekend, the Falcons were the city’s shining light.

We need a running back. Jaquez is not the one. Why not let 44 have a few more carries. 33 is good when the other team is tired. Washingtons running back was much better than any of ours. 6th round pick. Why through to 33, he cannot catch.

Ray Goff ?

Why worry about Ray Goff ?

We’ve got Mark Richt who has not beat a team making the top 10 until you go back 7 years ago.

Congratulations to the Falcons.

I agree, we need to keep this blog about sports, primarily the Falcons, and not politics. With that said, here are some points and shout outs:

Victories, keep ‘em coming.
O-line looking better, but still needs work.
Tony Gonzalez is amazing.
Enough of the trolls jealously.

Receiving corp is best in NFC, maybe NFL.
Oakland, be ready and go 6-0.
Matt Ryan is elite.
New coaches looking good so far.
Excellent kicker and punter.
Yes, this team can win it all!

Joe Hawley at full back? Drops two passes? Good to see the Keotter and this offense is indeed more than competent enough to overcome such a horrible, horrible, ridiculous experiment gone wrong. This Hawley guy must have pictures of Arthur blank and a sheep. He’s been a bust at every Oline position he’s played….yet they keep trying to play him somewhere….even fullback! What a joke. Mark Richt said his team was not FLAT Saturday.

South Carolina scored 35 points to nothing before Steve Spurrier with 10:45 left in the game emptied the bench. Our Special Teams still made up of mostly walk-ons gave up another punt return for a TD of 70 yards. And, our Offense could not score the whole game until Steve Spurrier emptied the bench and even then it took until 1:55 left in the game to score.

The Falcons are not a perfect team but they don’t lose games like the one in Washington on Sunday afternoon. It wasn’t pretty, or clean, and it turned into a battle of wills and who wanted it more. Mike Smith has his team primed for just that type of battle. Lets just hope that the run D can improve and that Ryan can continue to play at a high level. Maybe we can get a shot to erase some demons in the GaDome come January. Thanks Falcons for giving us something to believe in after our other local boys got booted over the weekend! Rise – Up!

Great win Falcons, Matt Ryan made some very solid throws in the game, if we can beat the Raiders we will be 6-0 into the bye week. As for the Dawgs that was miserable, that team is a reflection of Mark Richt, a heck of a nice man but a meek and quiet football coach.

If we pay close attention to 2012 opposing defenses scheme vs the Falcons, teams haven’t changed that much from 2011. Ryan arms strength has changed…………………..

When sport journalists ask Matt Ryan about his zip on his throws, Ryan down play his new found arm strength……Ryan gives modest responses or moots the ideal about his offseason workout contributing to the noticeable difference in his passing game……..

Consider the throw to Roddy(59yd Bomb) vs. the Panthers, Ryan was ask if he would have made that throw last season…..Ryan answered yes,,,,saying he always have confidence in his ability to throw deep…….WRONG ANSWER!!!!!!!

There are many games from last season that will refute Ryan’s yes……..Poignantly, the playoff game vs the Giants, when the Falcons offense(0pts) fail to outscore Falcons Defense(2pts).

RYAN’S OFFSEASON WORKOUT HAS COUNTERED OPPOSING TEAMS DEFENSIVE SCHEMES AGAINST HIM……….TEAMS CAN NO LONGER AFFORD TO PLAY 8 MEN IN THE BOX AGAINST THE FALCONS……OR RYAN AND HIS RECEIVERS ARE VERY LIKELY TO BURN THE DEFENSES AGAINST THAT SCHEME….

RYAN’S ARM STRENGTH HAS MUCH IMPROVED…….THE 59yd BOMB TO RODDY TRAVELED WITH VELOCITY BETWEEN TWO DEFENDERS………THE THROW DIDN’T TRAVEL LIKE A PUNT OR BLIMP THAT RYAN’S DEEP THROWS DID LAST YEAR…..

ALL ALONG, I HAVE SAID THAT RYAN IS ONE OF THE MOST CEREBRAL QUARTERBACKS IN THE NFL,,BUT HIS ARM WAS MEDIOCRE OR JUST ABOVE AVERAGE AT BEST………

NOW, RYAN CONSISTENTLY PUT ZIP ON HIS PASSES….WHY? HIS OFFSEASON STRENGTHENING……….HOPEFULLY, RYAN CONTINUE TO STRENGHTHEN HIS BODY….

Falcons on three, DOMINATE!!!!!!

I enjoyed watching UGA getting stomped on Saturday. I love to read the idiot UGA fan every season enjoy their 2 and 3 loss seasons every year expecting next year’s team during the off season to win a national championship. The stupidity of expecting a second rate head coach, a third rate offensive coordinator and a reject Dallas Cowboy defensive coach to win a National Championship is beyond me. I read where one of the above entries (Dawgdad The Original), who is obviously a frustrated Tea Bagger, compare it to a so called Presidential Debate the other night. I laugh at you sir for being foolish enough to support a State institution that hired a drunk, adulterer and wanna be athlete as it’s AD. UGA will never win a National Championship without major changes in the administration.

Yes, the Falcons are 5 and 0. So what. I’ll save my expectations until January when the playoffs are here. That’s when the great teams get it done. I admire an owner that has changed the losing culture of this franchise. I admire an owner that now wants more than just winning seasons and nothing afterward. I admire an owner that won’t except an also ran. He makes changes. Think about it Dawgdad The Original. Your stupidity as a Tea Bagger is insulting to bring politics into this blog. There are other sections in this website where you can shoot your stupid and mindless political crap as you please. We’re sports fans here. Respect that. If you can’t then I’ll come back every day to this site and debate your UGA support into the ground.

Great comeback Falcons. Defense is getting better every week. Offense is finding ways to get the ball in the endzone when the opponent takes away your two star receivers and ground game. The Falcons are using all the roster. Teams win championships. Bring on the Raiders.

Excited the Falcons are 5-0. I hope they win them all. But look at the facts – they have only beaten 1 team with a winning record so far. And let’s not forget 2 years ago – the best record in the NFC. Sports Fans – it’s all about winning in the Playoffs – so far they have none in the Smith era.

East Atlanta Ron

October 8th, 2012

Before the city gets caught up in the hysteria of being 5-0, let’s step back and reflect on what should be the real goal of professional football teams… winning a Super Bowl…. Thus far the Falcons have only played one team that will smell the post season. By the way, that one team (the Chargers) just lost to a team that had not found a W this season (the Saints). As I’ve stated in the past, in the NFL, stopping the run and being able to run the ball still rules. If you look at the Falcons objectively, those weaknesses will come back to haunt this team. Based on the weaklings in the NFC South, the Atlanta Falcons should have at least a 13-3 record at the end of the regular season, but I don’t think the Falcons will be ready for the post season. I’ve seen blog entries even mentioning the possibility of the Falcons finishing 15-1. The Packers were 15-1 last year. Ask the Packer fans if last season was a successful season. I’m sure you already know the answer. I’ve lived in Atlanta since 1967 and I’ve followed the Braves, Falcons and Hawks for decades. At the end of the day, if your team isn’t the last team standing, the season ends on a sour note. I’m so over regular wins over inferior opponents being glamorized. By the way, the Oakland Raiders are another inferior opponent from the worst division in the NFL, so don’t bother shouting about being 6-0 next Monday. In closing, the initial East Atlanta Ron Top 5 for 2012-2013 is provided below…

1. 49ers
2. Texans
3. Patriots
4. Giants (sorry guys, the NY Football Giants have a better pedigree for now)
5. Falcons

THIS IS WHY CHOKE FAILS IN THE PLAYOFFS:

They get soft regular season schedules and comes playoff time

they think they can do the same things to the elite teams that

they got lucky with the weak teams. Here is an example:

Compare the top 3 teams that Philly has played vs Falcants:

Philly…..Ravens (12-4) Steelers (12-4) Giants (Superbowl Champs)

Falcants…Denver (8-8) Chargers (8-8) Chiefs (7-9)

Being 5-0 and stacking wins vs weak teams will not make them

battle ready. Now take teams like Philly, who are playing playoff

elite quality teams, so comes playoff time they will already have

been tested. Falcants on the other hand, CHOKE will once again

experience the Deer meets Headlights Syndrone………….

This past week was hard for “Georgia” fans to handle except, of course, for the Falcon’s.
The Braves…well when your super star starts with a really bad error so what did we expect after one more really bad error by a “pro” and another by a rookie who I guess didn’t know how to run to first base. That set the tone and the Cards walked right in where we feared to tread. I can’t comment on the Tech and Dog things except to say they are
alwful looking when they lose. As for the Falcon’s well the sign of a good (almost) great pro football team is that they win even when they are doing many bad things. I was almost astounded when they turned it around and folks, you half-to-know they are now in the books at 5-0 and the Saints ain’t! As for baseball now…. who cares!

I’m lashing out at your hero, who squandered his God-given talents because of laziness, sloth, stupidity, and disrespect for the law, not to mention downright cruelty to animals; and in the process, he also squandered my hometown city’s #1 draft pick, made a coach resign in disgrace and disgust, and set a franchise back 5 years.

I don’t understand how you can refuse to understand the Falcons did what they had to do, and how much better off they are for the FUTURE — not the past — because they replaced Vick with a QB with a strong work ethic and leadership quality.

Your hatred of a good man in Ryan is childish, unfounded and based solely in jealousy. Your comments are offensive, redundant, and non-constructive.

But at least you check you facts. And you’re persistent, I’ll give you that.
