For two coaches of top-ranked programs, Steve Spurrier and Mark Richt seem to reside at opposite ends in perspective and their respective dealings with the media. (Phil Skinner/AJC)
Over the past few seasons, Mark Richt has had no shortage of reasons to put his fist through a wall, terrorize secretaries and assistant coaches or erupt in a news conference, as if Athens’ own little Mt. Vesuvius.
He has suspended players for poor academics, poor driving habits and poor choice of herbal supplements (in or outside of brownies). Several prize recruits have been excommunicated for assorted acts of dumbness. His job security has come into question. He works in a conference where five other schools have won BCS titles. And, on a lesser note, his athletic director was fired for drunk driving.
But notice something about Mark Richt? He seldom seems stressed. He isn’t storming out of news conferences when he sees a columnist he doesn’t like (really?), or blathering on the radio about making progress in trying to get a guy fired (fantasy).
As Richt said Tuesday, “I don’t think I’m totally Teflon, but there’s not much anybody can say that can get me bent out of shape.”
Richt lives in one universe.
Steve Spurrier holds his breath in the other.
It’s an interesting contrast of coaches this week. Georgia plays South Carolina. Both are 5-0 and top 10 teams. But Richt clearly is enjoying the moment – and he can be seen this week in a series of humorous ESPN commercials – while Spurrier is acting like a whining, petulant second-grader, carrying on a battle with local sports columnist Ron Morris, whom he’s convinced is out to get him.
Richt chuckled Tuesday when asked about Spurrier, saying, “I heard about him leaving the news conference,” but he generally refrained from comment.
But Richt will tell you that he has changed. Few college coaches have had more reasons to be stressed, but he seldom shows it. (He and I had a minor flare up several years back that was blown out of proportion — geez, I really hate the media — but it was cleared up that same day.)
“I know that most criticism is pointed toward the coach, not necessarily the person,” he said. “If I’ve ever felt something became more of a personal attack, there have been times when I’ve talked to people privately. Or if a guy beats up on a player more than I think he should, I’ll get sensitive about that once in a while. But in the grand scheme of things, it’s still momentary light affliction, like Apostle Paul talks about. It doesn’t last.
“I know when my wife had cervical cancer, if that doesn’t put life in perspective, what does? There are just things bigger than whether I’m the head coach at Georgia, or whether anybody thinks I’m smart or not smart, or a good coach or a bad coach. I know I’ve got a job to do, and I want to know that the process I go through in that job is one I can live with when I go to sleep at night.”
Richt and Spurrier both have their moral compasses. Spurrier’s just spins a little more.
He lost supporters with his constant enabling of former quarterback Stephen Garcia, who was “suspended” five times, yet somehow never managed to miss a game (until the university finally dismissed him). Spurrier was indignant when asked about the perception that he was soft on issues pertaining to alcohol. He told The State: “There is something that they can always pick at you about. … If the president and A.D. say, ‘Man, you are too soft on that,’ then they will get another coach here,” he told The State.)
His recent radio vent lost other supporters.
Spurrier’s objective, of course, is to unify his fan base and cultivate the us-against-the-world mentality. It’s not uncommon. His power and ego ran unchecked at Florida because he was winning SEC titles and seldom was criticized.
But when somebody’s constant response to any criticism becomes, “I’ll just [retire and] and go to the beach,” it’s clear he has lost all perspective.
Richt has been through the wringer of a 6-7 season, a 7-9 record in the SEC over two years and last season’s 0-2 start.
“I’m enjoying coaching more now — but, I mean, we’re winning a lot more,” he said.
Of criticism, he said: “When somebody critiques me, I try to filter the information, regardless of whether I think the person is mean-spirited or sweet-spirited, because the guy might be right. I may not give him credit from a pride standpoint, but sometimes there’s validity to it.”
It seems like a healthier perspective than threatening to quit or get somebody fired.

Any person that skips out on paying a golf bet is, well,
you form your own opinion.
Spurrier, we are still waiting on you in the VCC locker room
to get back from your car to get some cash to pay off your
golf bets you lost to Rodgers and Grant.

I like Steve Spurrier. He’s entertaining and he’s a very successful coach. He expects a lot out of his players and he’ll do what needs to be done to win. But a lot of coaches are like that, but not as nearly as hilarious. It might not be so funny being one of his players, but then you don’t hear a lot of his former players complaining about their treatment. And not much adoration either. I think Richt and I have a similar opinion regarding Spurrier, nevermind him just consider his jokes as just that, jokes. Sticks and stones and all. Nothing to get bent out of shape over. I’m a UGA alum, but I admire the passion Darth Visor brings to the rivalry. He’s a great heel.

Gary, your character assassination of Spurrier is typical of the audience Jeff is playing to. Usually Richt kicked players off the team because the Athens police or law enforcement has had to take action first. Richt is like a politician, coaching football is not politics, it is a job, paid for by lots of money, with job expectations and goals reached. Gary you assume things about Spurrier that just are not true. Then Jeff feeds those assumptions with red meat. Then Spurrier is asked what does he think of Jeff or whomever and he calls them hacks. Then you start all over with character assassination.
One thing I have notice with players like Shaw and Latimore in Columbia. They both have great character as do many in Spurrier’s programs over the years. I think Spurrier recruits these guys over others because they see something in him the press refuses to focus on. Generation after generation of not so good character goes to the UGA football program. It is not Spurrier turning his head; he literally has fewer problems with his players than Richt does. But most teams in the SEC have fewer problems than Richt does. Penn State should have taught us a lesson on the responsibility of the press, apparently not.

It kills me how every journalist in the country is sticking up for Morris. Ron Morris is one of the most negative writers in America. It is one thing to use facts to back up why a team is not doing well, but to intentionally slander someones character with made up crap is another. He accused Spurrier of “poaching” Bruce Ellington from the basketball team and wrote an article about it. The basketball coach at the time and Ellington both said that never happened. He also wrote several things about how he does not care about the health of his players and was intentionally playing a hurt Connor Shaw. Spurrier only played him, because the medical staff said it was ok. He has never in the history of being at South Carolina, played a hurt player for his benefit. Morris has spewed this garbage since he has been at the Sate newspaper. Enough is enough! He has even accused Ray Tanner of abusing pitchers arms and not caring about them. I am glad someone finally decided to stand up to this idiot. Maybe you guys can hire Morris up here to write for UGA, we will gladly let you have him.

“I am ALL for CMR righting the ship like so many preached on his behalf last year. This is his opportunity to do that but, unfortunately it has not, as yet come to fruition. At this juncture there is very little to indicate that it will. Some where my friend we fans have to think “Punt” knowwhattameen?”
But, being you asked. Thus far last year and as well as this year it has come to fruition. He has made marde improvement. Are you blind Thomas? Currently he is undefeated, ranked 5th in the country and does control his own destiny to the national championship game. What more did you expect to happen by this point in the game? If universities really were concerend with how coaches were percevied Florida would not have hired Doug Dickey, Charlie Pell, Galen Hall, and Steve Spurrier. The same is true with Georgia on Ray Golf and Jim Donnan. Universities want a winner no matter the odds, and at Florida the Bull Gator Boosters wanted a winner no matter what public perception was. The Gators back in the 70s – 90s were oh so desprate. The same with Georgia and South Carolina. Now as for Stevie Wonder, and his manic ways, it is no wonder why the guy is hell bent on winning at all costs. He is a over achiever to a fault. Not grounded evidenced by The Garcia Ordeal.
As for South Carolina, they want a winner really bad, and Steve has them where he wants them. So Steve is in heaven with the rest of the COCKS.
When the university wins, and get to a place where they quit striving, as well have a soild tradition, then a guy like Steve Spurrier will have no place. So SC bought them a prostitute, and no a too pretty one at that.
Put a bag over his head, and a rag in his month, and just keep riding the that………….well you know how to finish this sentence.

Odell Thurman and Caleb King ?
Mark Richt has given all kinds of second chances to Odell Thurman and to Caleb King ?
Carlton Thomas was suspended 3 times last season, and had he not quit in the off-season was STILL on the team before he transferred-out.
Isaiah Crowell 3 times suspended or arrested and then finally he is kicked-off the team for University of Georgia violation.
And, his side-kick ?
Cootie Harrow ? No one gave Cootie the # 136 Safety in America a scholarship. Isaiah asked Alabama to do that : No deal Lucille they told him. Mark Richt did. And, Cootie had already FLUNKED-OUT when the Five (5) Mark Richt recruits were ALL in Isaiah Crowell’s car at 4 am on Sunday morning. Their defense ? The bar made them smell like drugs. All 5 under-age. All that covered up.
Ken Boo Malcome quit the team and announced his transfer-out. Flunked NCAA Drug Test. Suspended. Mark Richt ? Made him STARTING TAILBACK AHEAD OF TODD GURLEY whom everyone said OWNED THE POSITION all FALL. And, ahead of Keith Marshall, just like Mark Richt put Aron White ahead of Orson Charles because Aron made all of 3 catches his freshman year while Orson had 23 catches his freshman year. And, like Mark Richt put Joe Tereshinski III and Joe Cox BOTH ahead of 1st Pick Over-All NFL Draft Matthew Stafford. We lost 4 games that season, I remind you. And, like Mark Richt redshirted the # 3 RB in the nation (Todd Gurley is the # 3 RB in the nation for direct comparison.) Knowshon Moreno, so we got to see him 2 years and gone.
The list is endless.
Montez Robinson beat up his girlfriend. Left on the team (Can you say that happened in 2012 also ? How’s that worked out in our Secondary 2012 ?) Montez Robinson then beat up her car. He was suspended 1 game total. Then, Montez Robinson beats up his girlfriend or her car a 3rd Time – and only then did the University of Georgia kick Montez Robinson out of UGA for beating up a coed in GOOD STANDING as a student at The University of Georgia.
There are 100 more instances in these 12 years where Mark Richt has
MIS-MANAGED his talent here without any semblance of DISCIPLINE. To Mark Richt DISCIPLINE is instead tough punishment. The 2 are NOT at all the same principle. We lack DISCIPLINE, and we PLAY FAVORITES.

What a bunch of naive clowns! This reminds me of going into a high school, heading down to detention hall, and then blaming the administration for the discipline. Richt gets criticized for trying work on the young men’s character too much by some, and then GT and Bozo Brown and company come on here detailing the problems in detention hall and blaming them on Richt! GT, Spurrier has been accused of having his players paid at Florida (google Tank Black + Spurrier). SOS just refuses to discipline his kids. He doesn’t want to know about it. Perhaps he is right (I’m not criticizing him), but even when his players are arrested for underage drinking, he refuses to discipline them! All he would say is that everybody does it, and he simply wouldn’t discipline a kid who was arrested for drinking and driving! Excuse me, but we have had several players suspended for that infraction. Again, I’m not criticizing; I’m only trying to show you how dumb your arguments appear in the light of some common sense and reasoning.

Concerned as Ronald Regan once said,” there you go again”. You are right back on the false assumptions like nothing has been said about facts before you spoke. “They want a winner really bad”, you just indicted the entire SEC, and its fans. You could work a little on Arkansas or maybe on Tenn. fans who are about to run Dooley off, before you run down Spurrier, but then those programs make your program look good, you need them. It is Spurrier that holds a higher bar, took a team not accustomed to winning and put it in your path of easy opponents. If it wasn’t for Spurrier, U of Georgia would have no competition in the division, and he has come to a school barely on a football map to do it. He has done it which about as much clarity and character as any team in the country. UGA has taken one of the proudest brands in all of college football and gone backwards, not only on the field but in the character that represents the team. Richt is a lot like Bowden; he talked the talk but loaded the campus up with thugs. Don’t indict Spurrier until you check your own laundry out. Or do, it doesn’t matter; the truth rises above all of this even when it is compromised by the press. The loser is the guy who transmits and believes the false facts, can’t win not knowing what the truth is, listen to Spurrier he has a good grip on it.

Anybody that can win 9-10 games a year at USCe is a dam good coach. Yes, they might have to cut a few corners along the way but if you don’t believe the other teams in the SEC aren’t doing the same then you’re fooling yourself. I don’t have the time a day for the media in this country. Steve’s results on the filed are documented for everyone to see and there is no hiding the scoreboard 12/13 times a year. Spurrier has never forgotton going into Jacksonville as the UF QB when UF was rated number one and Spurrier had a lock on the Heisman trophy. The Georgia Bulldogs took him to the woodshed and made it hurt.
Spurrier has some type of personality thing. He can never get over s setback. He always holds a grudge. He has to be the most miserable successful coach in America.
He is really kind of sad. That is why people in sports bars laugh and cheer when he gets that look on his face when he knows there is not enough time on the clock for his team to come back and that they are going to lose.

If Richt has figured out a way to be competitive with 60+% of the scholarships other schools have, then he is obviously a pretty good coach. I remember seeing an interview a couple of years ago when he said he really wants the Gamecocks to start hanging 50 on their opponents. I guess he really likes to rub losers’ faces in their sorrow? The only reason I could see for going for two was that the next TD would give them 50! I just don’t know what to think? Any Gamecock fans have an explanation for why he did that?

I really do not think Mark Richt knocked the lid off UGA Top 10 All-Time Football Program in WINS by beating # 4 vols in 2001 when he lost 4 games in 2001.
I really do not think Mark Richt had a good season 2010 playing 4 teams who made any top 25 poll and losing all 4 games.
I really do not think that Mark Richt has earned any bragging rights for 2012 beating only Vandie well this season, his team doing well that one game only when Vandie all season long has only 1 win and it only over Presbyterian Blue Hose.

Yep…them Dawgs are 5-0…ranked 5th…beat everyone in their path…scoring at will. My stinger would be itching as well if my team received a beatdown from a cupcake like Middle Tenn. Yep fellas it is great being a Bulldawg!!!

CHDawg I do think Richt wants to lose players. Too convenient he loses Crowell and gets two stud running backs the same time. Most SEC and good football teams do it, but they don’t ride this character theme, they just do it and win. Georgia has the most talent of any team in the country on defense, I believe that. Does anyone question it was under coached last week? You got in a shoot out with a mediocre offensive team. The idea of bringing thugs on campus is winning football games, not rehab.

They asked him why he went for 2 ?
He said, because they wouldn’t let him go for 3.

Mark Richt should take a lesson from Spurrier on how to win Titles. One is greater than none. Playing for two is greater than playing for zero. That’s all that anyone will remember. He also will be known for changing the SEC and making it better.

kingdaddy,
Ok, so I am a liar. You did not say this ?

”JB
If UGA loses to S.C. this year but wins the rest of the scheduled games, then makes it to the SEC-CG and is not competitive, then I see a major shake-up in our staff by McGarrity. UGA has to beat someone ranked this year in my belief. I don’t think CMR & CMB get a free pass this year just for beating unranked teams. This team has the talent to win, but do they have the coaching? Its too late to do anything this year, but ride it out…”

“I agree Kingdaddy. Beating up on weak foe and losing to good teams ( not even great teams) is a pattern for the Dawgs the Last three years, And it’s not a lack of talent. You can read a lot of thing into Richt’s new contract, and I’m reading McGarity is not sold. Here’s more rope, and we;ll see.”

Thomas bringing the facts …over and over. I have to hand it to dude for you sure can get these doggies upset. The UGA fans always have an out in that if they get beat Richt is getting beat the RIGHT WAY! I love that one for sure.
Little info…Nick Saban has challenged the staff, roster, janitor, cafeteria help, and anybody near the football program to get their act together going forward. He is not happy at all about the current progress of the football team. This is no joke. My source tells me he peeled the paint off the meeting room walls this week. These next two weeks will determine whether Bama is the real deal or a Cap One Bowl team. Expect the unexpected.

GT, I don’t know how much you know about football, but Crowell is a great talent. Nobody in their right mind would lose him unless his discipline issues forced it. It doesn’t cost Richt anything to keep the extra players. He can only lose. Many of the schollys are dormant, as TB pointed out. GT, did you google SOS’s comments about refusing to discipline Tanner for drinking?

I would take Spurrier over Richt he has done more with less. Like he noted South Carolina was the only team in the east last year to defeat all eastern teams. Richt is a good person and coach but still not convinced he can get them to the next level and maintain it. Lot of super talented teams did not live up to expectations. Often wondered what would have happened if Georgia had kept Van Gorder. Seemed to drop off after he left. Saban is who he is and another topic for another day.
