LIVE BLOG: Georgia tries to avoid ‘trap’ against Tennessee

ATHENS – So is this affirmation week or trap week?
Georgia plays Tennessee today. Honestly, I was a little surprised when the Glantz-Culver line (adopted by the AJC and Weekend Predictions, Inc. as the official point spread ) opened with the Bulldogs as a 15-point favorite and it immediately dropped to 13½ (though it has inched back up to 14).
The Dogs are ranked No. 5, and look like legitimate

title contenders. Other than some first-half hiccups in the SEC opener at Missouri, they have looked strong defensively and leveled Vanderbilt 48-3 last week. Tennessee isn’t as bad as some people think – Derek Dooley inherited a mess and really isn’t doing a bad job – but for the Volunteers’ defense to give up 555 yards at home in a 37-20 loss to Florida speaks to where the program is.
The “trap” concerns come from the fact Georgia plays at No. 6 South Carolina next week, in a game that conceivably could decide the SEC East. And, fact is, Georgia has laid some eggs against Tennessee in the past: a 45-19 loss at Knoxville in 2009, 35-14 loss at Knoxville in 2007, 51-33 loss in Athens in 2006, 19-14 loss in Athens in 2004.
But I think it’s more about this: People are waiting for something to go wrong. Georgia is 4-0, including 2-0 in the conference. It hasn’t started this strong since 2008, when it was 4-0 going into the infamous “blackout” game against Alabama, only to be body-slammed 41-30 at home.
In fact, the Dogs have not won their first three conference games in a season since 2005, when they started 5-0 (7-0 overall). Quarterback D.J. Shockley was injured and they lost the next game to Florida 14-10, as well as Auburn the following week. But they still won the SEC title that season.
The biggest news going into today’s game is the expected return of both safety Bacarri Rambo and linebacker Alec Ogletree. Coach Mark Richt has played coy on the subject all week but it has been widely reported that both players had been suspended for four games.

Tn is explosive, but the big unknown is how well our D plays with 9 and 18 back, and how well our line blocks. Ogeltree is a great player and maybe a lot of people have forgotten how well he plays. Turnovers could be the difference. I hope the Dawgs can keep the momentum rolling. GO Dawgs!

I wasn’t really nervous before, but now I am. We need to play mistake-free football, no penalties and no turnovers. And if we’re up big at the end somehow, get those starters off the field. We need to protect against injuries for next week.

How good is this team? Who knows, they have played some very poor football teams, and looked pretty weak at times defensively. Missouri appears to be much worse than most had thought when they first played UGA.
It is way too soon to call this team a title contender, the only reason UGA is undefeated is because of the schedule.
They should roll over a much less talented Tennessee today.

Texas A&M 30, Arkansas 10 half way through the 3rd quarter….with Wilson playing QB for the Hogs. I told you A&M was good….and that Florida has played a very good team. The Vols are better than most of you think….as well. Just not deep enough to beat Georgia. If Georgia turns the ball over several time, the Vols could give the Dawgs a tough time. If not, Georgia wins by 15 to 20.

if we run the ball with our tailbacks 40 times and operate from under center for at least half the game as opposed to the shotgun, we should win convincingly (of course we need take care of the ball and not turn it over as well). If we think throw first and are about 50-50 run pass play selection it will be a very close game

Next week is going to be a very stiff test for the Dawgs. Our defense better bring the hat because Marcus Lattimore has killed us the past two seasons. Gotta put a hat on him. Our O-line has to step it up big time next week because Devin Taylor is 6′8, Clowney is like 6′6 and both are fast, quick, and can get to Murray in no time. John Theus vs. Devin Taylor is going to be the matchup of the game. Hope Theus is ready.

The only thing about UGA that looks questionable is Marshall Morgan’s PAT kicking. The kid doesn’t really have trouble hitting field goals but he just can’t comfortably make an extra point.
Impressive run by Gurley, though. UGA’s offense is looking extremely formidable.

A few points here, 1 Branden Smith is the worse cornerback in college football, 2 This defensive line for as much acclaim that they get gets pushed around a lot, 3 the conservative play calling on first down of that last drive and 3 down on the drive before that shows that Georgia is just a goodteam not a championship caliber team. This defense is not impressive at all! Whats is so hard about kicking extra points? Also, was that hit that vicious that Aaron Murray had to fumble that ball? M Mitchell does not need to field punts. Aaron Murray 2 turnovers 2 touchdowns!

The play calling went conservative because the no-catch punt put them on the 1. That ain’t Bobo. The D totally slacked on the 50 yard drive. That ain’t Bobo. The O line missed an assignment and Murray was hit by an unencumbered defender. That ain’t Murray. Gurley just totally muffed up the kickoff so now Bobo will be blamed again. You guys need a lesson in blame assignment because there is plenty to go around right now.

This is not Richt or Bobo’s fault…or the defenses. It begins and ends with Murray. He giftwrapped 14 points for Tennessee and set the precedent. I don’t believe Lemay or Mason is necessarily the answer, but Murray is an embarassment on turnovers in key situations.

Best QB……or the QB with the best skill set right now. The best QB is Wilson at Arkansas. But he does not have a supporting cast. Driskel may have the best skill set….but he is developing the mental part still. Murray is one of the best. Bray has the best arm…but not the best brain. The QB at Bama is the best leader and executes his offense the best.

All the guys you mentioned could do the same at Bama playing behind that OL. Every D has to play to stop the run, so the passing game is easy. All but 1 or 2 of the QB’s in the SEC could run AL’s offense just as well as the current Bama QB.

Folks…..Georgia lost its focus in the second quarter….but they obviously have a better and deeper team….and that should be the difference in the second half. But the Vols are spreading the field on offense….and challenging the questionable Georgia secondary…..and winning that game right now. They are also challenging Theus at RT…and winning that game as well. I would put Jones at DE and blitz him more to put more pressure on Bray….and when you put pressure on Bray….he folds and throws INTs and makes mistakes, etc. I think you will see some of that in the second half.

I see alot of you talking about the offense. What about special teams? Our special teams has wet the bed twice with really dumb plays, and there was a third time that could have been horrible if Malcolm Mitchell had fumbled after being hit. Furthermore, UGA has missed yet another extra point.
I’m a Mark Richt fan and don’t want him going anywhere, but I didn’t see anything like this when I went to Tuscaloosa a few weeks ago to watch Bama play. Bama and UGA are not separated by talent at all, but they are certainly separated by mental fortitude and preparation.

TO’s and terrible spec teams play kiilling nus. This game was in hand until Mitchell let the punt roll to the 1 and marshall couldn’t get the 1st down on the run. Then the fumbles and the dawgs not pressuring Bray and now its all even at 30. What a let down and again so typical of GA over the years to let a game get away when leading. My greatest fear this season – a Pick-6. Even though it was tipped, now Richt has lost his faith in Murray. As soon as we get another lead, it will be like last season – 3-and-out.

I can’t believe people are griping about coaching in this game so far. Richt and bobo didn’t drop the ball twice or step out of bounds at the 2on a kickoff or completely whiff on a block.Get the hell over it. Not many teams can turn the ball over 3 times on their side of the field and still score 30 at the half. Now we start again and only half to win oh

Tech fan here, straight off of watching what was left of our season implode in a 3 touchdown (!!!) loss to Middle Tennessee State (!!!!) To the Georgia bloggers,…you are going to win today. Your team took their collective foot off the gas when it was looking like a blowout, but I can tell just from watching on TV that UGA is by far the better team. Enjoy the 2nd half.

You cannot have a championship team with a quarterback that gives up so many big plays to the other team. Also, has Murray ever had a tipped pass that was not caught by the other team? But hey, the media thinks he’s a great quarterback. When he leaves UGA, he’ll be like Eric Zeier – great stats but no championships. Murray is like a fighter with a glass jaw except that he can’t take a hit without fumbling the ball. If he can’t take an average football hit without fumbling the ball he should take up a non contact sport. Unfortunately we are stuck with him for another year because an NFL team won’t draft him.
Looks like the defense is over rated. Tennessee is running up the middle at will.
And oh – I guess we still don’t need a special teams coach?

I’m still amazed at these comments. Tampa Gator is not the problem..he is not SSI Gator, just talking ball. Richt is not the problem. Bobo is not the problem. The problem is Murray giving away 14 points and gift wrapping momentum. It isn’t overly complicated. It is big game Murray at his finest. Thankfully, it is the first half and not the 2nd…but I don’t have a better alternative than Murray in the middle of the game unfortunately. Neither Mason or Lemay is going to save us without prep.

While I have criticized Georgia D let me even things out and say I am completely unimpressed with Bray. Strong arm is where it begins and ends with him.
Georgia has Tenn beat on team speed so bad that it is almost funny to watch plays to outside develop.

At scme point you folks will understand talent is big no doubt but coaching and discipline are bigger. Your players can’t wait to celebrate instead of taking one play at a time. Must be something in the water at the High Schools in Georgia. Gurley is a fine looking player but he he needs a knot jerked in his behind by the HC. The other RB is a bit better than average. Then again you folks go ahead and make them world champs as ususal. UT is a short talent and no depth at all. Run the ball then run it again and again until UT is done then again Richt doesn’t have any discipline himeself.

We’ll stay in the top 5. LSU barely beat Auburn last week, Alabama barely beat Tennessee 12-10 in 2009 when they won the national title…teams have these kinda games. This could be the springboard to the rest of our year. Good team make corrections, we will.

GO DAWGS!! The offense overall looked impressive. The mental mistakes and unfortunate turnovers hurt us. Where was the defense when it counted? If it wasn’t for a couple of dropped passes by Tennessee this game could have been lost. I’d give the offense an A- and the defense a C+. We’d better tighten up and improve on defense – both run (TN ran for 197 yards!) and pass (way too much cushion). And where was the pass rush??? I think it showed up on one or two final plays but was nonexistent otherwise the entire game.

Tampa Gator you should no better than to say that this game can give you any idea what’s going to happen when we play the Gators. I mean Missouri hung with UGA but manhandled by USC. USC struggles with Vandy, but UGA crushes them. This game looked an awful lot like the UGA/USC game last year except with the Dawgs winning. Plus, this is normally the type of game the Dawgs have lost in the past even in years they won the SEC.

Forgetting for the moment, the final score which more closely resembles
a high school basketball game, these are the type of games that Vince would
usually win, while Richt has a history of letting get away. The fact that UGA
was able to come back and hold on is very encouraging. Good game Dawgs !!

The Bulldogs seems more like pretenders than contenders for the east. This defense was just exposed by Tenneessee, so what will S.carolina and Florida do in the weeks to come. They were reading their own press clippings too much. I imagine that this performance should drop them from #5.

I did not say anything about this game having anything to do with the Florida-Georgia game. I just said that Florida’s offensive and defensive lines dominated the Vols….in their house….and it also shut down a prolific Texas A&M offense. I think Florida has maybe the best D in the SEC this year….and the offense is also coming on strong. But we will find out for sure next weekend in the SWAMP vs. LSU.

We dodged a bullet, but it may catch up to us next week. If the D plays like this against SC, it won’t turn out well. I don’t understand how a UGA D that was ranked so high last year, can look so inept with almost everyone back. Maybe this is the bad game they have to get out of their system.
To Tennessee fans, I know moral victories don’t mean much, but you gave the #5 team in the country all it could handle and more. Dooley had them playing at a high level and they never quit. Be proud of that — I think you have the right coach and are very close to turning the corner. You didn’t quite get over the hump today, but it was a huge step forward. I honestly thought UGA would win by 21 and hold Bray and company to under 20. Congrats and chins up.

The real Georgia showed up today. Good offense with a suspect defense. Every team will watch this game and know how to beat the Dawgs. Spurrier has to be relieved. Sad, I really wanted a game where Georgia could make a statement that they were ready for the big time but they’re not. Tennessee played hard but not well. This game should have been put away in the first half and it wasn’t. Glad we won’t have to hear anymore Heismann hype out of Athens. This game took care of that. Only thing that makes this win remotely acceptable was the refs were almost as bad as the ones at my 7 year olds game today. How many missed holding calls. No joy.

The offense is a blessing and a curse. They scored so quickly several times, then had deep turnovers, then the two 3 and outs in the 4th qtr. So the defense was gassed…
