Short takes: Resiliency, Ryan and turnovers carry Falcons

Thomas DeCoud had two interceptions and a fumble recovery. (AP photo)

Thomas DeCoud, here tackling Ryan Mathews, had two interceptions and one fumble recovery.

(I’ll be posting the column soon on today’s Falcons’ win over San Diego, which will focus on quarterback Matt Ryan. Until then, here are my three “short takes” on the game.)

• 1. This was an impressive win on many levels, but no moreso than in the resiliency they showed. They were playing on the road in a short week after a physically punishing win over the Denver Broncos on Monday night, yet they flew to the West Coast and dominated San Diego from the opening drive. It’s only three games into the season but this might have been the strongest sign yet of how good the Falcons can be.

• 2. The Falcons will need to be able to run the ball effectively at some point. But it hasn’t been an issue yet, primarily because of quarterback Matt Ryan. Michael Turner was not a factor when the team built a 20-0 halftime lead — he had only eight carries for 15 yards for a 1.9-yard average through two quarters — but by then Ryan already had thrown for 208 yards and three touchdowns. In Turner’s defense, the offensive line didn’t create many holes. The Falcons can only hope that when Turner’s fourth-quarter touchdown run in mop-up time will signal some sort of break-thru for both he and the line.

• 3. The Falcons are winning in part because they are not beating themselves. The defense forced four San Diego turnovers (including two interceptions and a fumble recovery by safety Thomas DeCoud) and now has 11 takeaways in three games. The team’s only turnover this season was a fourth-quarter interception thrown by Ryan, which leaves the team with a net of plus-10 in turnover differential. DeCoud’s three interceptions already this season are only one short of his career high (four last year).

150 miles outside Atlanta yet Fox figures I would prefer watching the Broncos and Texans – message to Fox – get over your Peyton obsession – everyone is not really in love with him the way you guys are.

Not much resiliency needed as this game went on. The Falcons manhandled the Bolts. This is one of the more impressive wins Smitty has had since he took over. Loved it.

Great Road Victory for the Falcons!

However, we need to get rid of Michael Turner… He is fat and slow hitting the holes.

His best plays were in “Junk Time”.

Jazquiz Rogers is awesome!

Turner being fierce in the 4th is just when we need him. This team might lead every game this year and letting him salt away “smitty ball style” is the only logical place to use him, once the opposing D is gassed.

How about that Falcon DEFENSE?!?!

We look very well balanced in our attack this year. Good Offense, Good defense, Good Special teams, etc.

I hope the Falcons will keep a low profile during the regular season and come out in the playoffs with a vengeance!

Go Falcons!

Get ready for a week of national hype. SI cover jinx level hype. Stay grounded. You will not go 16-0. This is a good squad. The Saints are three back. The Panthers are a dumpster fire. The Bucs are meh. The playoffs – barring a season changing injury – seem a lock. Stay in the moment.

We are so lucky to have Matt Ryan as our QB. The guy is solid as a rock.
He definitely has the “Field General” mentality down; the guy is like a coach on the field.
Every year he gets better and better!
(I love Michael Vick and wish him well except against the Falcons)

Tyson, you have a noodle for a brain. Great win and the best pick up of the off season so far has been the two assistant coaches. Both sides of the ball look very strong. Great to be a Falcon and Dawg fan and sucks to be a saints fan right now. Couldn’t happen to a better bunch of terds.

This pretty much is the same Defense as last year . . . . even less with injuries . . .correct? Maybe you folks on this Blog much more familiar with BVG than I am – had it right in your detractions. There seems to be much more aggressiveness – particularly in the secondary. I’m almost expecting a Pick these days – unlike last year just hoping they found a way to get off the field.

I think coaching matters and coaching changes–on both sides of ball–are benefitting the Falcons big time. Seems like the talent & the coaching strategy are meshing really, really nicely. This could be the year.

Bandwagon fans? Atlanta fans have suffered longer than those in any city in America. Those of us who have stuck by the Falcons and Braves through thick and thin are anything but bandwagon fans, compared to fans of the Cowboys, Steelers, Yankees and Red Sox — especially those who don’t even live in those cities. Atlanta fans have more right to be happy about a winning team than they do. Bandwagon? Go sell it somewhere else.

Still a lot of areas that can be better (stopping the run, running the ball), and no the Falcons won’t go 16-0. But 3 wins is a great start toward 10, which should win the division easily this year. That team that plays in New Orleans is a disaster.
