Mike Nolan's scheme and the way he's coaching it is paying dividends. (Curtis Compton/AJC)
SAN DIEGO — When the Falcons ended last season with another early playoff meltdown, it didn’t matter if anybody else in the organization preached patience and threw daffodils about the franchise’s future, because owner Arthur Blank’s vote would trump them all. Self-made billionaires tend to be results-driven, particularly ones who type emails in a red font. If significant changes weren’t made in personnel, they certainly would be made in scheme and philosophy.
Which is why before you could say, “season-ticket sales,” Mike Mularkey and Brian VanGorder were gone.
It’s true that both coordinators left for other jobs. But both may have beaten the Falcons to the punch. Mularkey filled Jacksonville’s head coaching vacancy, but his exit probably was cemented when the Falcons’ offense shot blanks in the playoff loss to New York. VanGorder’s future was no better than tenuous when he left for Auburn because some defensive players had started to tune him out.
That’s certainly not an issue now. The Falcons won Monday’s game over Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos in large part because of Mike Nolan, their new defensive coordinator. His schemes, heavy on nickel and well-disguised coverages and blitzes, fooled one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. Most important, the team’s defensive backs have taken to the quieter Nolan after having their ears singed for too many weeks by VanGorder, the screaming sort.

William Moore had an interception and a sack against Peyton Manning. (Jason Getz/AJC)
To quote safety Thomas DeCoud, who accounted for one of Manning’s interceptions, said: “It just got to the point where we had to pick and choose what to listen to and what not to. You learned to take some things with a grain of salt. Brian was a passionate coach. He wanted his guys to be out there playing tough, strong and perfect football. You can’t fault a man for that. But it was just one of those things where you had to learn how to take your coach for who he was.”
William Moore, who had an interception and a sack of Manning last week, echoed those sentiments, adding: “I was one of the guys he yelled at the most. He also pulled me to the side and would explain things, but he didn’t show that side of him on the field. That’s not a knock on VanGorder. It just the way he coaches. Coach Nolan doesn’t do that. Everybody’s a man. This is just a job. You’ve got a responsibility, and you have a job to do. If you’re not doing it, there’s no reason to yell at you. They’ll just replace you.”
The defense’s performance against Denver (four turnovers, seven points allowed in the first three-plus quarters) would have been impressive even in normal circumstances. But it came against Manning, and after losing cornerback Brent Grimes for the season the week before, and Asante Samuel and Christopher Owens for stretches of the Broncos game. Reserves Robert McClain, inactive in Week 1, and Dominique Franks, both were pressed into full-time duty. McClain had an interception.
DeCoud described Nolan’s scheme as “an offensive approach to defense. Changing the math and making sure the offense is adjusting to us. We’re dictating the pace and tempo, rather than vice versa.”
What’s clear is the confidence they are playing with and how they’ve taken to Nolan. He has them believing in his system, regardless of the circumstances. They also enjoy not being yelled at. VanGorder was revered at Georgia. He didn’t achieve the same level of success as an NFL coordinator, but there hasn’t been an abundance of talent on the Falcons’ defense either, and there also was some question about how much freedom he was given from coach Mike Smith.
Nolan, for what it’s worth, said he used to be more of a screamer.
“I think everybody has to coach in their own style,” he said. “There was a time when I screamed more. I think as we all get older it’s no different than raising your kids and you get frustrated by everything. Then after a while you get … I think when you know how to parent is when you become a grandparent. So, I think coaching is a little bit the same way. As you get older, you say less and let them play more.”
Whatever his methods, they are paying early dividends.

Ha ha, these guys are rich! Knew it… Wait till December Jeff Schultz, this has short term written all over it (the smoke and mirrors aspects) like it has everywhere he’s gone… When the video finally gets enough of a knowledge base for the rest of the league to see how far the personnel on hand can go, it is going to be like his previous stops… And then the babble will be what happened?

I’m betting that Nolan is not a one trick pony and will adapt the scheme as needed. There is plenty of footage on Nolan’s previous teams and on the talent of the current Falcon players. It didn’t help the Broncos Monday night. The biggest problem last year was predictability. The Chiefs had success on our D in the first half, but at half time Nolan made adjustments then the Falcons took control of the game.
No team has it all in place from year to year, just ask the Saints….. We will ride the train as long as we can. The biggest thing in these first two games is that the back ups are stepping up and filling the gaps.

You cry yourself to sleep in December and January…
Spend less time trying to be snarky and look at his history (y’all are suppose to be so big on that)…
He’s been a career .500 second half coordinator (62-62-1). That is not even counting those disaster years in SF. Read it and weep, he may pull a single or two season anomaly like he did in NYG before the league finally figured out his personnel and their limits…
So till then I’ll leave it till his traditional equilibrium period kicks in… Have fun till then, enjoy!

Jeff, has Nolan ever coached a defense with an OFFENSE as talented as ours on the other side of the ball? Miami, Denver, San Francisco all had solid defenses but underwhelming offenses.
Do you think having a competent QB and greater offensive talent affect his approach to coaching? Maybe allowing him to be MORE aggressive and gamble more?
Also, admit it, you were about to call Peyton the greatest QB in NFL History weren’t you? =)

I still don’t think it’s a very talented defense, but Nolan seems to have a good idea of how to minimize our weaknesses, which is a hallmark of any good coach. If we had a consistent pass rusher (Abraham is still good but not an every-down guy anymore), I think Nolan could really do some work with this crew.

Notice how well players are developing under Nolan. Witherspoon is on his way way to the pro bowl, and Decoud is playing like he did two years ago. But the guy that is really standing out is William Moore. For a player noted early in his career as a hard hitting run support safety, he is becoming a ball hawk and outstanding all around player. Under Nolan, I could see him becoming one of the top safeties in all of the NFL. Great coaches bring out the very best in their players, and Nolan is certainly getting the best from this team.

@ Jaded you are correct that the talent on defense is not strong. With the cap, it is tough to get and keep top notch players on boths sides of the ball. Nolan’s job is to make the most of what he has. McClain’s interception looked promising to me. Three picks in the first three drives against Manning, is not bad.

As long as Nolan is providing the necessary change on defense (creativity), which was obvious to anyone who watched the Falcons play the same tired Cover 2 zones the last few years, then I’m going to back him. VanGorder wouldn’t have fooled Manning. We would have been leaving guys open in short and medium routes all game long. That’s just stupid. You have eleven players on defense. Use them to confuse and attack the offense.

JSS – one problem with your second half theory, that was not the Falcons and that was not Matty Ice, Roddy White, Julio Jones, Gonzo, etc. these Falcons are a much better team than Nolan had in the past. You can’t judge a team on defense alone. I like the research but it just doesn’t apply here.

According to the 2012 Football Outsiders Almanac, the 2009 Broncos had the second-largest improvement in defensive efficiency from the previous season.
2011 Miami Dolphins were 1-7 in 1st 8 games, 5-3 in last 8 games. What drop off?
Nolan improved 2010 Dolphins from 25th to 14th in points allowed.

Once the season starts, the fun of football is to just watch it. Not pick it apart. Pre-season analysis is ok. Watching the games for its entertainment value is what I wait all year for. It doesn’t matter what the Falcons do, haters like JSS are gonna hate.
If we do win in December and January, he’ll say that we won’t do it again next year, and that this year was a fluke. Blah blah blah.
I’m enjoying my Falcons, and win or lose, I’m a fan. It was pretty satisfying to rain on the Peyton Manning parade. Maybe we lose to San Diego, maybe we take care of business. I’ll still support my guys either way.
The real point is that we have become a solid football franchise that’s headed in the right direction and should be relevant as long as Matt Ryan stays upright. The Saints, meanwhile, are a complete train wreck and Drew Brees is starting to look pretty creaky.
Have a nice weekend, Falcons fans.

I’m with you and Paddy. I certainly don’t mind the analyses others post, but I’m just a fan — and a fan who’s endured years of Falcon failure since 1966. As I commented on another blog in regard to “SmittyBall,” there’s MIKE SmittyBall and RANKIN SmittyBall, and I’m still pretty happy with the MIKE version.
We may not beat the Chargers on Sunday, but Arthur Blank has finally built a Falcons team that simply cannot be taken for granted. Simply becoming a consistent contender is a big deal in the NFL. Playoff wins and championships will come. I’m not above nitpicking and grousing when we play poorly or lose, but I’m really enjoying the Birds these days.

Winning out in SD will be tough, but a 3-0 start would be great. The following three are winnable (CAR, WAS, OAK.) Then you get BYE (at least not a loss.) The BYE can help or hurt, you never know, but the three following BYE is the hardest three-set on the schedule (PHI, DAL, NO.)
8-1, or 7-2 with six to go would be sweet.

Again, a “wrong assumption” made by a person unwilling to back it up with research… From October 16, 2011-November 4, 2011, I did not post one comment on any AJC blog… Between February 1, 2010- March 1, 2010, no post while I was in Auckland, NZ…. You guys see hosts and it all boils down to this, I had the balls to say that your precious football team was not built to win playoff games on three different occasions… Moreover, I took the ungodly positions of questioning your sainted QB’s post season capacity since he the day before he took his first playoff, his second playoff snap (hello Mr. Williams), and again his latest great display in post-season performance that produced “cero, zero, nada, nin” points by the mighty offense. It gets under your craw, and because your chosen football team has not been able to take that glaring fact off the table…
“If I was on in Mexico I sure as heck could find 1000 things to do instead of post blogs on a website of a team I dont like…”
Pssst… You’re jumping the gun, I leave for the DF (that is Mexico City for you gringos) on October 12th… Then it will be: “while you are in Mexico!” And a little more “reading comprehension” might help your issues, it’s “wife-to-be.”
Leave WWE type conspiracies to the showrunners at that Titan Sports… It is not that complicated, Dimitroff did not draft well, you lack quality depth, the team is depending on teams not having time to get either get “adjustments” of their own or scheming weaknesses away, and your hoping that time with as many issues as possible does not adjust or correct their internal ship… And anyone who does not hold your warped views “hates” or is a “hater.” Sorry, not believing in something does not make it “hating.” Pssst, I don’t think the Patriots can win the Super Bowl too, guess that means I “hate” them too? Human beings are social creatures and need social interaction, feedback, and validation of their worth. The emotionally mature person doesn’t need to go hunting for these; they gain it naturally from their daily life, especially from their work and from stable relationships. Daniel Goleman calls emotional maturity emotional intelligence, or EQ; he believes, and I agree, that EQ is a much better indicator of a person’s character and value than intelligence quotient, or IQ.
The emotionally immature person, however, has low levels of self-esteem and self-confidence and consequently feels insecure; to counter these feelings of insecurity they will spend a large proportion of their lives creating situations in which they become the centre of attention. It may be that the need for attention is inversely proportional to emotional maturity, therefore anyone indulging in attention-seeking behaviours is telling you how emotionally immature they are.
Anyone on here fit the profile?

As far as this supposed “Nolan hating,” he’s a fine (not great DC)… Problem is, he has a past and time does not that fact… “Hours Googling?” Man, you must be stuck in the 19th century, still using ‘Facts on File?’ I’ve had that one stored away since the day they hired him… It’s been a known matter, he’s not seen a playoffs since 2003, and his teams haven’t won (at leat one game) since 2002. Mike Nolan has failed in second halves of seasons with greater defensive talent. You folks swear that the goal is a Super Bowl championship, but you keep trying to make a 1979 Ford Pinto (that defense) into a dependable car. You’ll get 5000 miles out of it and then the problems will resurface… He’s an upgrade over VanGorder. Still, serious point, Mike Smith was standing there the entire time and did nothing to get his DC on a different page or work to get his management style to change and you kept him… They have a term for that in MBA schools. “Google” it, Enjoy…

Jss, No you actually didin’t. You cheery picked. I just looked at his defensive stats from 2008 – 20011. The only second half that was bad was 2009 in Denver.
2008 18.8 pts pergame
2009 bad
2010 15.6
2011 16.3
1998 you say? ARe you sure you want to look at the second half collapse? Ok then. Last 9 games his defense gave up a whopping 9.1 pts per game. Ugg terrible. Though you did say Washington so maybe you meant his 99 season with them? 16.2 per game that second half.
So if we take a real look at the defensive stats and not just win loss records your whole rant seems to….well fall apart honestly.

I said he threw up stinkers in 98… They got in some turnover fest that year, that 0-7 start did not help… The three loses were consistent (Arizona twice, and Dallas)… Despite turning over Arizona team, they still got evenly mauled by those two teams in passing and rush yards… And by the way, that 32.3 points per game in those 3 losses… But oops, that is “cherry-picking!”

Narcissism is a term with a wide range of meanings, depending on whether it is used to describe a central concept of psychoanalytic theory, a mental illness, a social or cultural problem, or simply a personality trait. Except in the sense of primary narcissism or healthy self-love, “narcissism” usually is used to describe some kind of problem in a person or group’s relationships with self and others. In everyday speech, “narcissism” often means egoism, vanity, conceit, or simple selfishness. Applied to a social group, it is sometimes used to denote elitism or an indifference to the plight of others. In psychology, the term is used to describe both normal self-love and unhealthy self-absorption due to a disturbance in the sense of self.

you can’t say he was .500 coordinator the second half. You can say the teams he coached finished with a .500 record the second half. He was only in charge of the defense and can’t control the other 2 portions of the football game : offense and ST. It is disingenuous at best and lame stat picking to try and prove an invalid point at worst.

The Strength of Schedule of all of our opponents this 2012 regular season was # 54 in the nation before Saturday; however, Georgie tek took another loss to an unranked opponent as neither Miami of Florida nor Virginia Tech are ranked but both beat Georgie tek.
Missouri, our “signature win” on the season, marched on to their obvious 6-Loss or worse season in a 10-31 loss to South Carolina. Recall they lost to us 20-41.
South Carolina, after next week, faces Georgia, LSU and Florida before ending their season against Clemson. Check back with me what South Carolina is ranked after playing those games.
Florida, as well, starts next week against LSU, South Carolina, Georgia, and finishes against Florida State.
Florida nor South Carolina’s ranking today is what it will be after their games coming-up. Check back with me after these games they play.
Right ?
Georgia Southern who lost to lowly Citadel last week, barely squeaked by Elon yesterday 26-23.
Auburn lost again. Unranked Auburn. 1-3 Auburn. But, that was supposed to be our “signature win” last season.
Ole Miss has “wins” over Central Arkansas, UTEP and Tulane colleges. That’s it. They are unranked anyway.
Kentucky has only a win over Kent State.
What a hodge-podge of a “schedule” we play. Still, it was a hot afternoon at Sanford as the boo-birds did not show and we put up quite a performance against a sorry Vandie team who came in the # 68 NCAA Total Offense with a loud-mouth losing record coach, who is 7-10 in his career. It was a beautiful night in Athens as Aaron Murray, again, looked great against inferior opposition, and as our running backs proved once again, that Buck Belue handing the football off is our best offense. Late the game, Mark Richt brought in Parker Welsh at QB.
We emptied the bench and tried to make statements about our walk-ons.
At the very end, Christian LeMay got to run once for 5 yards.
Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley showed they are exactly what everyone expected. More than a bunch of people tried to tell us that Todd Gurley was a bruising man, and he is every bit of that. Keith Marshall added 2 touchdowns on way to his career total of more than 30 touchdowns at Georgia in his 3-year career. He and Todd Gurley will both go in the NFL Draft.
Walk-ons were indifferent yet again last night. I have no idea what Merritt Hall was doing with no Vandie player within 15-yards of him, catching the kick-off and putting his knee to the ground without so much as handing the ball to Todd Gurley standing right there for the hand-off. I mean if you are afraid you might fumble the football, grow a pair.
Opponents on our schedule has a very poor showing last night, while we looked the part of # 5 against yet again, another hapless opponent. How good does the win against Mizzou look now ?
We welcome unranked vols next week. You keep feeling like we are building toward something, and still then you look at your tickets and see who we have next.
vols. A hapless vols’ team. An unranked hapless vols’ team. An unranked hapless vols’ team who have wins over opponents who all season have put up a grand total of 1-win combined by all their “opponents” they have wins over. An unranked hapless vols’ team with dubious wins themselves, who can neither run the football even nor stop the run.
We have such an easy schedule, and South Carolina is going to drop like a ton of bricks in the rankings playing us, Clemson, LSU, and Clemson. Florida, too, drops a lot worse like a ton a bricks in the rankings starting next week against LSU, South Carolina, us and Florida State.
On this night, we got home earlier on a beautiful evening, and complete win as I have resigned myself to such “wins” with no signature game until we play Alabama. The talk will be big, and the X and O we will see will be what it has been all 12 years when we finally do play our 1-game season.
______________
Mark Richt era –
What have SEC done against teams who made AP Poll Top 10 ?
____________________________________________________
11 Wins LSU # 1
11 Wins Auburn # 2
10 Wins Florida # 3
6 Wins Alabama # 4
6 Wins vols # 5
4 Wins Arkansas # 6
3 Wins Texas A & M # 7
3 Wins UGA # 8
We are a BCS-buster with one game at the end of the season against Alabama. That leaves us with a bowl game, as our only hope of doing anything about this, as none of the “opponents” on our schedule will make the AP Poll Top 10 besides our impending date with Alabama.

Just looking at the teams Nolan coached for…I’m guessing they were not offensive juggernauts. I would speculate that Nolan’s defense picked up a lot of the slack on those teams. Anyone have the stats on this? I don’t feel like looking it up right now. Anyway, Nolan’s scheming against one of the masters of MNF was nothing short of brilliant.
Aside from Nolan and the defense, this team will live and die with Ryan…so as long as the defense gets a few stops and remains opportunistic, not too concerned.
As for the game today, not feeling good about it…but will take 2-1 after two road games and a tough MNF game.

7 teams associated with Nolan during his 15 years as a coordinator have finished in the upper 15 teams in the offensive categories.
When he had a highly efficient and productive offense like the 1999 Redskins 2nd in points scored & in yards, his defense was lowly ranked 24th in points and 30th in yards allowed.

Well, Nolan is an old pro, and he has a ring, that goes a long way in keeping the players attention. When you compare that to a lifetime college coordinator, it is an upgrade. Especially when you see how Ice has been committed to his craft and worked this offseason to improve the physical part of his game to match is superior mental abilities, you have a formula for success, the #1 rated QB in the NFL and an agressive, attacking D….
7 teams associated with Nolan during his 15 years as a coordinator have finished in the upper 15 teams in the offensive categories.

What Nolan is doing is basically playing the old Buddy Ryan Chicago D. As teams move from the West Coast to more downfield passing Defenses, the 46 will be more effective in that we either will not give the QB time to throw, or we will have time to drop into coverage after showing pressure. It is the short hitting passes that exposes this type of D. So it is a good scheme for todays NFL and shows Nolans old Savvy.
But we don’t have a MLB, and we lost our best CB for the season, so are not going to ride our D to a superbowl like the 2000 Ravens, but if Ryan continues to perform at level he has, an average D is good enough.

There were “gods” and the concepts of god children way before “Christians” ever tried the concept… Don’t let your frustrations with other folk having self-determination get you in a huff on a beautiful Sunday… Are you scared of your melting pot?

Not for freedom… Hate freedom? Hate Thomas Paine and Ben Franklin too? Or only when it is convenient and not a bit ugly?

No, I asked you if you hate freedom… Paine was a “founding father, you bet… Hmmm, great philosopher of the Revolution, such a liberal he went to France when he returned and died and only 6 folks came to his funeral because he had the nerve to question “Christianity…” You paint “liberals” with some silly brush and palette of conjectures… Don’t be a “pot calling the kettle black.” Go enjoy your “game” before you blow a gasket
