Short takes: 3 thoughts on Falcons’ win over Chiefs

Caption.

Caption.

(I’ll be back with the game column shortly, which will focus on the Falcons’ offense. Until then, here are three quick thoughts’ on the Falcons after their opening game against Kansas City. This is a new feature in the AJC.)

1. Julio Jones is Falcons’ No. 1 weapon: Every receiver can be stopped by some defense or cornerback at some point. But opponents are going to struggle to contain Jones this season, particularly in an offense that has so many options and with a coordinator (Dirk Koetter) who is far less predictable in play-calling than Mike Mularkey. Jones had three receptions and a touchdown before the seats at Arrowhead Stadium got warm. He had six catches for 108 yards and two touchdowns by halftime.

2. Jacquizz Rodgers is no longer MIA: The running back, seldom used in his rookie season, had a 77-yard kickoff return and had eight “touches” on offense (34 combined rushing and receiving yards). Rodgers doesn’t yet show the ability to be an every-down back, but he’ll clearly be in the rotation with Michael Turner and he gives defenses something else to think about.

3. Defense remains an early concern: The Falcons had significant defensive problems in the first half and seldom pressured Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel, who picked apart a soft zone defense. It looked disturbingly similar to last season. Things got better in the second half, but that might have been more the product of the Chiefs self destructing. Cassel threw two interceptions (William Moore and Stephen Nicholas). However, John Abraham registered a sack and forced a fumble that the Falcons converted into a touchdown drive. Bottom line: The defense will need to create a better pass rush.

Good Afternoon AJC,

This spot is where I have always gone for the keen insights of your coulmnists HiramSaint, SeenThisB4, and the eloquent JSS. However I have not found their comments on taday’s games thus far; can you tell me, are these no longer employed by your organization?

Thanks,

Wow the Saints look bad. Things could unravel quickly for them. I think missing their coach and Brees contract situation keeping him from working out in the offseason might come back to hurt them.

It was a GREAT weekend for the three big boys in Georgia football. Three big roflstomps……like I said earlier, its time for our three football teams (Jackets, Dawgies, and Falcons) to start giving out arse whoopins instead of receiving them.Great weekend!

“The Falcons had significant defensive problems in the first half and seldom pressured Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel…”

There was not a single holding call in the entire game. This worked for both offensive lines but I like it better when refs make them at least semi-comply with the rules of the game.

Combination of the ‘aint’s being a little in turmoil and the skins being much improved. RGIII is raw, but very talented and the skins have some real talent on D.

One thing is for certain: We won’t see any Vick lovers online today talking about how great No. 7 is. The Eagles are going to win this game (Michael Vick somehow wasn’t the worst QB on the field today, thanks in large part to Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brandon Weeden), but about zero percent of that is due in part to the dog killer.

Matt Ryan, here in year 5, is starting to look a lot like a guy drafted No. 3 overall. He’s making crisp decisions, the ball is leaving his hand with a lot more zip now, and this team, if the defense can hold up, might be very, very scary.

Thanks Jeff.

Having seen every offense ATL has ever fielded, today was the most efficient I have seen. The bottom line: give Ryan some breathing room and it is game over.

As far as the defense goes, it is nice to see a DC that actually can make adjustments.

As I like to say every season, the first 4 games can be an indicator of how bad you really are but don’t necessarily mean how good you are. But this game was not trickery. It was “Here we come. Stop us.”. It was REFRESHING!

Gotta pressure the great one next week or it us 1 and 1.

By the way, to the phil bashers from the game blog, it was very hard for me to say what i said above. As a Falcon since 66, we are always waiting for the piano to fall out of the sky. We gave valid reasons for that. Today was nice. 12-4 or 11-5 will be great. Just show me when it’s ball check time.

Good Effort Falcons! This ain’t the same pansy cake Ryan I’ve seen in previous seasons who was scared to get hit and wiggle off of hits. Even though this is just the first game against at most an average opponent, I do like his confidence now! His play action could still use improvement, but for now, we’ll focus on the impressive win. Congrats also on Matty’s first rushing TD in his lifetime– AWESOME. We gotta improve before the Saint’s get clicking on all cylinder’s..they were definitely still showing sparks even though they look “unraveled”.

The point is that the Aints are 0-1, what you got to say about that Choke? I know you got something to say! And they are 0-1 because they looked like swamp poop! Could not stop a pop warner team from scoring! Who cares if they got the bum bounty hunters back! How that work out? Wait here is the real question….i remember you and seen bragging about your new linebacker you got from the Falcons…whats his name not hard to remember we saw his last name all game today as he was getting burned! Lofton right? Hehehehehahahahaha. That was the worst D in the world. Nice opening game for the intern coach. He looked good. Good in a JV game! What can you say? Was it because you played a subpar team with a rookie QB who was able to drop 40? O yea the golden boy Sleeze did not look to good either…..looked really shaky in the pocket. Geaux Saints! Straight to the bottom of the NFC South….somewhere you used to being!

Guys-lets get a dose of reality here. It’s one game so stop calling people out, etc. This is why people in other towns think your horrible sports fans. You win one game and you think you’re going to the superbowl and you lose one game and everyone thinks it’s the end of the world. Our defense was horrible in the first half despite all the focus in the draft and a new coordinator. HORRIBLE. I’m going to give them a couple of games to right the ship but nobody is going to the superbowl or win a playoff game with a defense this bad. So let’s have a little humility and stop calling people out when we could be in the same boat next week…
