LIVE: Georgia looks to make quick work of Buffalo, move on

Thirty minutes to kickoffs. Fans may want to get here quick before blowout starts.

Thirty minutes to kickoff. Fans may want to get here quick before the blowout starts.

ATHENS — For the first time since November, I can begin a blog with, “Good morning from Sanford Stadium.” The Georgia Bulldogs plan to have the Buffalo Bulls for a light lunch.

Let’s get to the important stuff:

• 1.) It’s humid. I mean, really stupidly humid. My iPhone right now says 81 degrees (projected high in Athens: 93). But it feels more like a sauna on July 1 than the almost-fall cooling temperatures of Sept. 1. Logic suggests this will affect Buffalo more than Georgia, not that we would have attached any trace of suspense to today’s outcome even if it was 72 degrees with a soft ocean breeze. (The point spread is 37½. I say the Dogs cover. See the rest of my picks here).

• 2.) This is the first game for Russ, The Temporary Mascot, as Uga IX. I’m hoping this ascension to full time means the poor dog finally gets insurance benefits. I had to crack up at athletic director Greg McGarity’s statement the other day: “Russ has endeared himself to the Georgia people over the last three years. His dedication to duty when called upon has been exemplary and it’s fitting that he takes his place in the official line of Georgia mascots.”

People. The dog is in a crate. What’s he going to do? Make a break for it and hop a bus to Starkville?

(You may now commence with your cyber attacks on me for making Uga jokes.)

• 3.) This is a good chance for Georgia to test its depth on defense and try some players in different situations. Five defensive starters are expected to miss the game: Cornerback-wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell (sprained ankle), cornerback Sanders Commings (suspended two games for domestic battery), linebacker Chase Vasser (suspended two games for DUI), linebacker Alec Ogletree (violation of team rules) and safety Bacarri Rambo (violation of team rules). Georgia has never confirmed reports that the Olgetree and Rambo both failed drug tests or that they have been suspended (and for how long).

• 4.) I’m most interested to watch the Dogs’ offense, particularly the play of the offensive line (which I believe ultimately will determine what kind of season they have) and the effectiveness of freshman tailbacks Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall. As much as the excommunicated Isaiah Crowell was undone by off-the-field issues, most recently felony gun charges, he easily was the best running back the Dogs had.

That’s it for now. I’ll post any updates on the lineup and suspensions as warranted. Now, I may head down for a pre-game chat with Russ.

Welcome back to college football.

The cyber venting lines are open.

I wanna see the backup QB. CMR talks about loyalty all the time. Is that just for a few people? what about the kids who work their butts off and sacrifice 4 the team. Matson derserves playing time. Looking for C Washington 2 have monster year. Go you Junkyard DAWGS

I wanna see us forget Isaiah Crowell! He’s history and is now in Montgomery, Ala. where I hope he’ll get his life together! Sure, he ran for 850 yards and will probably do more than that at Alabama State. Whatcha say we let him drift off into the sunset and go on and not waste print on him. It’s a shame so much time and second chances he was given. He does not deserve any more from UGA! GO DAWGS!! P.S. Gurley and Marshall just might make us totally forget him! By the way who was Washaun Ealy??

Congrats to Glenn 4 working hard and getting drafted. Hope he does great. Also, I am so glad that IC transferred and regret that he didn’t work out at UGA. His attitude was a distraction 2 me while watchig the game, and I imagine to the other players who needed to have their focus on the game.

Jeff, I am all set and I hope you can stop by. I don’t mean to flaunt it but I will be showing my brown a$$ if I get on camera today. I have forgiven Coach Richt but I will keep my eye on him just the same. Big Bad Bruce (RIP) never had an a$$ painting but he didn’t trust Coach Richt either. One thing I have learned since I’ve had a full Uga pass down here on the sidelines and that is Coach Richt better keep his eye on Coach Grantham because I think he wants the top job. I think he likes me though because he lets me eat any doughnuts he doesn’t get to.

To Summarize:

Gurley – Good
Aaron Murray — bad. Very bad.
Offensive line — thank God it is Buffalo.
Defense — atrocious. This isn’t the best defense in AAAAAA Georgia high school ball. See Grayson.
Receivers, not bad.
Gurley — good
Marshall — nice strong run.
Place kicker — who else could make us miss Blair Walsh?
Gurley — good
Bobo — same as he ever was. Gurley scores two touchdowns and has not seen the field since. Just as I told my brother after the kickoff return.

This team is NOT ready to play at the start of the season for the sixth consecutive year. The defense is getting pushed around by Buffalo. B. u. f. f. a. l. o.

How good would GT & Tevin Washington look vs. Buffalo? Kinda like 2011 vs. W.Carolina, MTSU, and Kansas.

UGA is supposed to win by 40-50 (or more) even playing 2nd & 3rd teamers, they’re just that much better.
Relax on Gurley, UGA fans, I remind you … it’s Buffalo.

The probable reason Buffalo didn’t go for it on 4th and goal is that they are playing competitively, moving the ball and believe they have a chance to win. And why shouldn’t they at this point?

Terrible performance by the Dawds so far, But the defense has so many starters out I have to give them a break, but no excuses for the offense,, 3 scoring drives that I saw ended with a total of 3 points.. At least 2 touch downs over thrown by Murray along with a few shabby other throws.
The only bright spot is Gurley! He is going to be tough I think.

Dr J

Run Gurley, and run him some more. He’s our best offensive player already. Aaron Murray still just doesn’t have that “It” factor at QB, and our O-line is getting pushed around by Buffalo. Missouri is going to tear us apart if we play like this next week. CLEARLY, we overlooked Buffalo as if they were a scrub team from an FCS school.

Hooray, same old team, predictable offense, poor execution and tackling on defense. All three running backs look like they could be weapons and could wear a team out, but you know Bobo will not use them effectively. Instead, we will get sprint draws, wide receiver screens, and dump-outs to our stone-handed fullback.

9-3. Losses to Mizzou, USC, and someone they shouldn’t like Vandy or UT. But UGA will probably back into the SECCG again and the status quo continues.

I pretty sure South Carolina, Florida, Missouri, Tennessee and Vanderbilt are better than we are. Kentucky? Don’t know – haven’t seen them play yet. Auburn? Pretty sure they are better than we are. Georgia Southern. Well, they actually rushed for over 300 yards last year against a pretty good defense – Alabama. Georgia Tech? Well, they are usually pretty bad, but I think they are better than Buffalo. Bring on Ole’ Miss – that might be a good game.

You guys Buffalo doesn’t get to play a school like UGA often so of course those guys are going to get up to play. Larger schools often have first game problems with smaller schools. UGA is for the most part playing two true freshmen running backs and a true freshman on the OL. Point spreads such as you see in this game are so large because the bookies want equal betting on both teams. It has nothing to do with how large the final margin of victory will be.

I see some improvements compared to last year – backs are more solid as a group for sure, passing game shows signs of real competence at times, but this was true last year, too, kicking game may be improved a tad (but hard to tell since this is Buffalo), overall level of hustle and intensity certainly look better, 2nd half so far is a lot better than first half, coaches haven’t taken the foot off the gas pedal (damn good thing) – but this does not look like a top twenty team right now.

Defense looks good sometimes, but isn’t consistent either, unless Buffalo is a lot better than I think.

We have a chance to learn something, and really improve before we hit the big time. We also have a chance to lose a lot of SEC games if we don’t. I think it mostly a coaching issue.

A true championship team has to be better coached than this for the first game. I’m so glad we’re aren’t paying a solid SEC team today.

I like the hard play by our boys, but it’s also our boys who are absent, or gone, because of bad behavior.

It sure looks like a sure win, but, considering the talent differential, why isn’t this the scrimmage predicted. Why we almost make Buffalo look good.

HURLEY SCORES EARLY (AND OFTEN) IN UGA OPENER !!!!

DAWG OFFENSE OUTSHINES DAWG DEFENSE IN SURPRISE OPENER !!!

Too good not to beat the AJC editors to the punch Dawg Nation.

The O certainly was a pleasent surprise today. Against albeit a cupcake team they did quite well and about the way a very good team needing some tuning would begin a season against a cupcake team.

Even Bobo was impressive in playcalling. Murray had problems in his long pass that may have yielded two or three more TDs but that’s forgiveable in a first game of the season.

The D was expected to dominate throughout the game but they did not. They DID make adjustments and dominate later however and I think this is the mark of a very good team too.

Will it last? Is it for real? We will see. Mizzou is a tougher test and despite The Gamecocks disappointing performance (except for Lattimore) it will be the third step of the test for our Dawgs in the early season.

Bottomline, I liked what I saw for a first game (remember how we struggled with Ga. Southern a few yeas ago?) and hope the adjustments on both sides of the ball will be made to run the table. Here now is the real test of good coaching……………we have proven good talent and a team that can execute but needs some adjustments to be truly something special.

It is squarely on the shoulders of Richt, Bobo and Grantham.

I learned a long time ago that it is wasted effort complaining about how the Dawgs looked against a weak opponent. At the end of the day they won 45-23 while testing the waters on offense. They were trying something different every possession just to see where they were. Imagine if the gameplan actually revolved around leaning on the RBs led by Gurley and then Murray making plays through the air when required?

UGA’s offense appears to have balance that we haven’t seen since Stafford-Moreno. The good news about that is Murray doesn’t have to be the man anymore and so we shouldn’t see as many bad turnovers out of the QB position.

I don’t think Bama fans were crying when they beat FCS Georgia Southern 45-21 at home last November after the team was well oiled. They only won the BCS Championship 2 months later. The irony is that GSU’s 21 points was the most Bama gave up to ANY opponent last season.

No faith in the UGA coaching staff to do anything different this season. Dollars to donuts Bobo will not adjust his playcalling to Gurley and Marshall, who should get 15-20 touches apiece from here out, then Malcome should also get carries when he gets back. I wanted more running and grinding the clock. I’m happy with the win, not pleased with the missing starters on Defense or lack of pressure in the middle or off the edges. Glad about turnovers (none) and we can move the ball. Murray was wound-tight but didn’t turn it over, still he needs to hand it off more. We have trolls pretending to be Dawgs everyday. Today was no different. RUSS GOT A BONE & A WIN TODAY! WAY TO GATA RUSS!

It was a perfect tuneup opponent gor UGA.

Buffalo was strong enough and had the talent to present a challenge and did so with 5 defensive starters out.

Yet Georgia was able to substitute and play a lot of people. Do you realize how many freshmen we had out on the field today, and walkons too.

Everyone got experience and the timing down. It was good.

Some slobs will moan about not beating the spread but the spread doesn’t matter. People have no business betting on college sports anyway.

We got done what we needed to get done and should be in fine shape for next week if number 71’s ankle is ok.

45 points and a win over a much inferior opponent, first game of the year isn’t much to belly ache over. 45 points and a loss is a different story.

I am convinced that we now have a real running game we haven’t had in the last 3 years. It will make volumes of difference for the offense and Murray although the OL needs more work. One can only hope Grantham finds that defense by next week because we were gashed

There is a time to quit whining and support the team and just see what they can do. There were a lot of bright spots and big plays. The O line played better in the second half–they are young. We need to improve a whole lot there if we want to play with the big boys. They were flat and looking ahead I think. We know the D can play and they looked flat in the second qtr. I think our quick lead put them to sleep. That is something we have had a problem with in the past. Go Dawgs. A solid W will never be whined over by me.

Number 71 had no business being in the game midway through the 4Q with a 21-point lead. One of the VERY FEW logical arguments for playing junior high school teams is that we can get the starters out early–so they don’t get hurt and so we can get some reps for the subs. We obviously fell a little short in that area today.

For the record, I’ve been bashing Bobo since he was running the offense in the 90s. I don’t know if I’ve ever had anything good to say about him in a public forum. But I do have to admit that while I didn’t think he deserved the OC position when he got it, I do see him progressing and at least appearing more comfortable with what he’s doing today.

That said, I don’t think he’s the best option and I don’t think he’s always right. I will say what I saw today was the best work I’ve seen from him yet. I liked how he split the load for the RBs and I liked seeing him take shots down field. It’s not his fault that Murray took forever to hit a receiver on a deep ball (and when he did it wasn’t in stride as the WR had to turn and the defender missed the tackle).

Let’s keep things in perspective people. A lot of coaches in history have received undue credit because they had studs playing for them. I have yet to see Bobo really out coach anyone offensively for an entire game. Sure, a great play here and there, but never anytime I can recall where…wait…Bobo outcoached Tech in the famous “I Run This State” game. That was brilliant just lining up and running the ball down their throats that year.

Dang, there I go again bashing Bobo. Bad me! I honestly will say that Bobo has earned my curiosity to see how he calls the Mizzou game. He’s got a clean slate with me this season but it can go back to calling for his head if UGA doesn’t run the table this year. There is no defense on the regular season schedule that should shut down UGA’s offense. If UGA loses a game it had better be due to the opponent striking gold and simply outscoring UGA in a high scoring affair. I won’t be happy with the defense but I’d sleep better at night versus seeing one of our famous untimely underperforming offensive games.

After a decade with Coach Richt, we have seen the product that he brings to the table. His teams are not total embarrassments, but they are not in national contention either. He means well, he is a good guy, but this is as far as he can take our program. If you are waiting for CMR to change, you are going to be disappointed. What you saw today is a typical Coach Richt team. Embrace the mediocrity or challenge our university to be better.

I do wonder why people speak of Richt as if he’s performing like Donnan. UGA has won the SEC East a pretty decent number of times under Richt considering the dominance that Florida and Tennessee had preceeding him. Let’s not forget the arrival of Spurrier at South Carolina has made them a respectable (but not elite, don’t get it twisted Cock fans) program. Richt has enjoyed 10+ win seasons throughout his tenure. Sure, there have been disappointments but all but 1 team is disappointed every season.

LSU fans were rumbling about the Les Miles hot seat before mid-September 2011 and they quickly shut their traps.

How many BCS Championships have Les Miles, Nick Saban, Gene Chizik, Urban Meyer won in the past decade with just NFL-caliber players? 0

How many SEC or BCS championships has Spurrier won at SC? 0

UGA’s coaching is fine, we just need the right bell cow(s) on offense. Richt has won the SEC 2 times, played for the championship 2 other times, and perhaps his best team didn’t qualify in 2007 because they started the season slow (I’ll admit that was a coaching issue). As a matter of fact, the beginning of 2007 and the entire 2008 season are the major cases for “bad coaching” and that wasn’t even X’s and O’s. Richt should have leaned on Moreno early in 2007 (looks like he’s learned that lesson the way Gurley and Marshall are allowed to run out of the gate) and the team just needed more leadership and focus in 2008.

In 2002 and 2007, UGA was 1 regular season win away from a legit shot at playing for the BCS Championship. And yes, I know UGA still would have had to beat LSU in 2007 but I’ll take the opportunity over the what-if. Every coach has had bad loses, but every great coach has had their lucky breaks and special seasons too. LSU won the BCS with 2 losses, Florida has never had a perfect season, and Bama won one of their’s without even winning the conference championship. I’d call that luck in the grand scheme of things. Four of the SEC’s BCS Championship teams required outside help to do it. UGA didn’t get help in 2002 and Auburn didn’t get help in 2004. Both of those teams would have had a great shot of winning the BCS Championship Game in those seasons.

UGA has had great talent over the years but on offense we haven’t had our Tebow, Newton, Richardson, Ingram, or Russell. Moreno was the closest thing to those guys talent-wise but he didn’t have the heart or will to win a championship (take me out coach) like those guys. That’s not a knock on Moreno, he just wasn’t wired that way. Stafford was just passing through on his way to the NFL. Murray appears to be the same as he checked his draft status last season. If he has great numbers this year I wouldn’t be shocked to see him bolt only to get drafted at the end of the 1st or likely in the 2nd round.

Hopefully Gurley and Marshall turn out to be our Ingram/Richardson combo. Super talented guys who are really driven to win a championship. It’s a must-have for those kinds of players, not a nice to have while I put up great stats before making millions in the NFL. Those guys are so dedicated to winning and achieving greatness that they were willing to come to the same school and compete for playing time not only with upperclassmen but each other too. That tells me they are more interested in winning than personal gain. I hope at least one of these guys turns out to be that magical player that a team can lean on for an entire season.

*Fingers crossed*

Look its like this, the Georgia Bulldawgs are not the best team in the nation nor the SEC, but they have a cance to win every game on their schedule. Every game will be tough because of our shortcomings! I do agree that Gurley needs at least 20 touches at the tail back position. He seems like the kind of runner that gets stronger as the game goes. I like the quick passes to T King and I love Bennetts ability to block and catch big passes. As far as the kickers I give them a b+ the field goals look shaky but the kick offs and punts were on the money. The jury is still out on the defense until we get all of our parts back. The offensive line was just OK. I hope Theus will be able to go next week. I think the dawgs will be ok, but they will have to play special football to win in SC and Mizzou. They will have to play well in Jacksonville and they will have to respect Tenn and Vandy when they come to Athens. Every game will be a battle so just enjoy the ride.
