It turns out life was a lot simpler when Jim Donnan was just a football coach. (Getty Images)
As Georgia football coaches go, Jim Donnan is the only one who collapsed under the weight of the SEC.
Not that SEC — the real one.
The Securities and Exchange Commission has charged Donnan with conducting an $80 million Ponzi scheme with an Ohio partner through a West Virginia company, GLC Limited.
This is even worse than losing to Kentucky in your first season.
Donnan mostly made his mark as a football coach at Marshall, where he won Division 1-AA championships. At Georgia, he was a step up from Ray Goff but not nearly as good as his replacement, Mark Richt. He had an impressive enough career to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009. What happened after that, I don’t know.
Once a coach or an athlete has achieved a certain level in sports and made a fair amount of money, it should not be that difficult to capitalize on your name — legally.
Donnan never coached again after getting fired following the 2000 season. He went into broadcasting. He got a job at ESPN. He did local sportstalk radio. Everything seemed fine. But often that competitive edge, the need for a thrill, that drives coaches and athletes doesn’t leave them post-career. That can become their undoing. It’s the simplest explanation I can think of for what Donnan has been accused of.
If the allegations are true, Donnan did the worst possible thing: He used his name to commit fraud against those who considered him a friend. He duped coaches and former players.
Among the SEC’s claims: “Donnan recruited the majority of investors by approaching contacts he made as a sports commentator and as a coach. For instance, he capitalized on his influence over one former player by telling him, ‘Your Daddy is going to take care of you. … If you weren’t my son, I wouldn’t be doing this for you.’ The player later invested $800,000.”
Imagine if Donnan didn’t consider him a son.
This story first broke last year. GLC Limited filed for bankruptcy in March of 2011. Donnan filed for bankruptcy a few months later. Financial disclosures indicated he owed $8.25 million to GLC Limited, according to a story in the Journal-Constitution. The court filing included 65 pages of creditors from several states.
In July of 2011, our Tim Tucker quoted Donnan’s attorney, Edward Tolley, as saying: “If this was a phony scheme, a lot of people were fooled, including, I submit to you, Jim Donnan.”
That defense apparently did not sway the SEC.
According to a news release on the charges, Donnan and his partner, Gregory Crabtree, ran a wholesale liquidation business that earned “substantial profits by buying leftover merchandise from major retailers and reselling those discontinued, damaged, or returned products to discount retailers. They promised investors exorbitant rates of return ranging from 50 to 380 percent. However, only about $12 million of the $80 million raised from nearly 100 investors was actually used to purchase leftover merchandise, and the remaining funds were used to pay fake returns to earlier investors or stolen for other uses.”
So much for the simple and stress-free life of a football coach. Maybe Donnan should’ve just followed Goff into the chicken business.

Jeff, I think you meant to write “That defense did NOT sway the SEC.” For as many corporate criminals as the near toothless SEC doesn’t prosecute, for them to think they have enough evidence against Donnan to prosecute him suggests to me that he was right in the middle of the conception of the Ponzi scheme despite his attorney’s claims he was a victim. If so, lock him up and throw away the key.

What the chance he knows nothing about the scheme? I mean he is the prime recruiter of the whole scheme.
The way he talked to his former player alone makes anybody cringe. It’s an investment, any investment carries risks.
Didn’t he get more than $10mill when the whole thing collapsed?

Financial fraud punishment is a joke. Donnan should have all assets accumulated by him during the time he started his little fraud, of his and his wife’s confiscated. If other family members got big bonuses or payout , that money should be taken , also. Then if everybody gets reimbursed he should go to prison for at least 5 years. If all stolen money is not returned Donnan should spend the next 20 years in prison. The main thing is that he and his family should be completely ruined financially unless every penny is returned. He certainly didn’t care about his victims.

For clarity’s sake, Jim Donnan has not been indicted on criminal charges. Only the DOJ can do that, not the SEC. The SEC sued him for civil violations. Getting sued by the SEC means that you may have to pay fines and restitution, as well as possibly losing the privilege of dealing in securities. But no prison or criminal record.
If the violations are of a criminal nature then he could get indicted by the DOJ and face jail time.

What a disgusting, pathetic punk. I’ve been a court reporter for 26 years and have worked close to a hundred trials involving criminal matters. There’s a good news/bad news scenario here. Crimes of fraud are the way to go if you want to stay out of prison. You can’t pay anybody back if you’re rotting in jail, right? They usually plea deal for 20 or so years of probation with a monthly pay off scale. However, hopefully the victims will want this fat slob housed up with the largest member of the Black Gorilla prison gang for the rest of his despicable life. It’s definitely true that they don’t bring criminal cases, especially high profile, without a pretty smokey smoking gun. Rot in hell, Jim Donnan. You sorry son of a bitch. F’ing thief.

it takes two to know. I personally think Donnan as much as I didn’t like his attitude at Georgia He was okay with what he had to work with. I do think that he did have quincy either throw that game or someone was paid off when he threw those five interceptions against USC. With that said….do I think he defrauded his own players in a ponzi scheme. NO. Inexplicable NO!!! He is the result of an economy gone bad and bankrupt. You know what you can say that the owner of a Subway is running a ponzi scheme at prices that gouge customers and never really get their money’s worth. You can say Social Security is a ponzi scheme and that’s a fact. You can say the oil and gas industry is a ponzi scheme. I personally think all the schemes should be named FONZI with two thumbs up!!!!! Its a messed up system and something needs to replace it.

I have questions for all the jerks coming here and spewing vemon at UGA.
1) What does UGA have to be embrassed about?
2) There are crooks at ALL unversities. The guy didn’t even attend the college. He was just an employee. Do you really think everyone that has attended the college are bad people?
3) Are you lives really that rotten. That you have to come to another schools blog and talk crap? If so, you need to look in the mirror and take care of yourself.

In a Ponzi scheme if the defendant is found guilty the court will confiscate all money involved and that means anybody who was paid and made a profit will have to reimburse what they collected. Then the total money collected will be divided equally among the victims. So I hope Beamer hasn’t spent the money yet because depending on when he got his investment back and profits and when it was determined the business turned into a Ponzi scheme he could lose some of what he got back.

Donnan might get a prison sentence. But in order for him to receive a long prison sentence (10 years or more), the government may have to prove that Donnan has a significant amount of money on hand, be it in a bank account or invested. Bankruptcy proceedings should determine if Donnan has this money on hand (or is living such an extravagant lifestyle to suggest he had money somewhere). If Donnan is truly broke and destitute, MIGHT get some time. Now if he has money on top of money and/or some extravagant lifestyle, then Donnan will die in prison!

QB: Quincy Carter(Crack, multiple drug offenses, assault, see google before I run out of characters)
RB:Isiah Crowell (Guns, Drugs)
RB:Caleb King (Felony Assault)
WR: Hines Ward (DUI) (Voted Dirtiest player in NFL by peers)
WR:Tavarres King- DUI
OL: George Foster – Committed a $ex Crime on a Florida Player costing us UF Game & SEC title
OL- Clint Boling- DUI
OL- Cant remember dudes name: He stole someones car tag sticker and placed on his vehicle
OL-Trinton Sturdivant – Battery
OL-Justin Anderson – Battery
TE -Clarence Kay (Assault, Drugs)
Defense:
DT: Brandon Wood(Dui)
DT; Kiante Tripp ( Burglary)
DE: Montez Robinson(Multiple Assault Arrests)
LB: Odell Thurman(Drugs, Assault, Longest banned player in NFL history)/CMR Posterboy
LB- Rennie Curran – Assault

LB- Marcus Dowtin- Assault, Drugs
DB- Sanders Cummings: Assault
DB-Tim Wansley – DUI, Assault
DB- Nick Robinson- Theft
DB- Branden Smith- Drugs
Long Snapper; Jeff Henson (Public urination, indecent exposure)
Summation of EX Thuga players is they like to hit the bottles, the powdered lines, their ladies, and much smaller non athletes harder than they ever did on the gridiron. You know a team is stacked when I had to leave off Zach Mettenberger, Orson Charles, Washaun Ealey, Knowshawn Moreno,Brownie Boy Rambo, and hundreds of others. Darius Dewberry even vandalized a hospital
Permanent Team Captains ; Quincy Carter (Offense) & Odell Thurman ( Defense)
Bottom Line is while Coach Mark Richt is praised for his religious beliefs and bible work, he is constantly handing out Bibles ( That are carved out to include slots for drugs, flasks, and get out of jail free cards(like to the DL who spent 30 days in jail and was arrested 4 times for same offense yet never missed a snap. His favorite chapters come from his Miami and FSU days.
While Saban’s players do not get arrested, make all american and win National Championships.

I think any non Thuga fan, can see what the THUGA culture has been about since Dooley Retired. Donnan was an instrumental part in continuing and exploiting it. UGA has a serious lack of instiutional control and a big part of that is Mark Richt. He just isnt able to bully the administrators at UGA the way Paterno has. Dawglasville. I am sure Branden Smith was punished appropriately for his arrest, and it had nothing to do with half of Thugas team being suspended against a Passing team in Missouri. Yes he really helped mold Odell Thurman into the man he is today. You are right he is a good coach, but he has great talent every single year and yet he underachieves. I am sure his Christian Charity has nothing to do with helping his one/loss record. I notice you didnt disagree with his Bobby Bowden teachings of “They are all Good Boys”
Mark Richt might have a higher overall winning percentage, but he has only Coached at UGA.
If he had coached at a Mid- Major he would have a much lower percentage. I personally like Coach Richt, and hope he stays there forever and that way I know UGA will never win another title that doesnt come with Fulmer Cup attached to it.

August 16th, 2012
5:22 pm
Continuing “debate” on AJC’s Get Schooled blog about charter schools—is between teachers’ union shills … and teachers’ union shills!
With AJC “moderator” Maureen Downey making a cynical mockery of presenting the issue.
The teachers’ unions, represented locally by the Georgia Association of Educators, are steadfastly against education reform and parental choice. State Schools Superintendent John Barge’s decision to break with other Republicans and oppose the charter school constitutional amendment on November’s ballot plays into their hands.
And predictably, Ms. Downey is doing all she can to see that the anti-parental choice viewpoint is heard—while BLOCKING from comment those of us who advocate for greater choice and freedom to innovate.
Which is why I’m posting here instead.

It’s all relative, Bobby. He’s got a Harvard grad Quarter-backing for him!! The Bills made enough noise this past Season to sign Super Mario & Mark Anderson. They were in the Playoff hunt until Fred Jackson got hurt.
Like I said, Chan was too “Southern” for Tech.
Y’all prefer the Johnson type — the ones brisking with personality!!

That’s funny, he does’nt look Nigerian. Who would think a Georgia coach of being a dirty scammer. I guess he learned “a fool and his money are soon departed”.

What goes on in Athens? I mean how close to Penn State do these guys come before the local news starts asking questions. You got a AD riding around town drunk, with red patties in his lap and a girl riding with him missing them. You have a football coach once removed that is just indicted. These are not your average adult supervisors of college kids. Is it any wonder the school has a freakiest number of players breaking the law.

DawgNole,
Yep. Guilty as charged. I’ve attributed others’ comments to you. Sorry about that.
As far as the ‘dumbazz’ comment? Well, I’ll forgive you for that. I had it coming, and your vocabulary,
as well as your character, are obviously challenged.

“A step up from Ray Goff?” You gotta be kidding! Ray Goff has more integrity in his pinkie than this piece of garbage; Note to sports writers: Life is about more than beating the Florida Gators….

You’re probably right about Goff. As far as life being about more than beating the gators . . . not in total agreement with that; there are very few things better.

Union stooge Get Educated blog distorts issues

Continuing “debate” on AJC’s Get Schooled blog about charter schools—is between teachers’ union shills … and teachers’ union shills!
With AJC “moderator” Maureen Downey making a cynical mockery of presenting the issue . . . .
And predictably, Ms. Downey is doing all she can to see that the anti-parental choice viewpoint is heard—while BLOCKING from comment those of us who advocate for greater choice and freedom to innovate.
Which is why I’m posting here instead.

TheSabanFactor – Branden Smith? I don’t know the facts. You don’t know the facts. I know that the blog game never lets facts get in the way of a zinger. Richt is the longest running coach in the most over zealous sports league in the country. He is a good coach. Bowden? I’m not a huge fan. I don’t think Richt runs the same ship. Richt is only guilty of taking chances on some players. He has dealt with them when they screw up. I don’t think that there are many coaches who would have handled punishments any different than he has. The point I made about Saban is that Richt has a winning record head to head vs Saban. It’s too late to look up the numbers.
Froggy – I’m a white 47 year Atlanta native. I’m an insider. Racist who do not know me feel real comfortable using terms like, “thug,” when describing athletes. The vast majority (I didn’t say all) of the crimes committed by UGA players over the past 10 years have been drinking, smoking pot, stupid thefts, driving violations. Things you probably saw from some of your very own friends. Yet, I sincerely doubt that you, or Well, or anyone else would refer to your friends as Thugs. You’re playing a childish game. Let it go man. If Auburn is your team, or if Tech is your team, whoever the hell your team is, good luck with the season and let the players be the ones playing the games.
DawgNole – thanks.

TheSabanFactor – Nope. Richt is 2-3 vs LSU and Bama Saban. My point is still the same. These are not the numbers of a dolt. Especially if Saban is the greatest college coach to ever grace the field. I’m happy with my guy. Most UGA fans are.

I hope you realize Jeff that social security is run the exact same way.
In fact it’s worst becuase all the money that’s collected over the years, all the surplus was spent on other gov’t programs. In other words, it’s broke! But the gov’t has the power to print money and make people think it’s sustainable, which of course it isn’t.

There can never be guarrantees on returns and these investors didn’t earn their money by using a lot of brain power in their lifes. Most made ridiculous money for playing or coaching football. But that’s the day and age we live in…where the pseudo-celebrities and sport professions laugh all the way to the bank.
The Lindsey Lohan’s of the world aren’t rich due to their brains.
So should we expect them to be smart in their investments. The only thing they can hope for is to trust someone else to handle business for them. Think a Warren Buffet would have been dumb enough to invest in something with so called guarranteed returns? And not have sense enough to realize it would be impossible to pay off many multiple investors such returns?
Buy a CD and be safe.

Football coaches, players and pseudo-celebrities that make millions upon millions aren’t making bucks as rocket scientists.
They aren’t too smart when it comes to business. No guarenteed returns. Warren Buffet would have laughed and realized multiple investors couldn’t be paid what they were promised.
Why don’t these people realize they’ve hit the lottery already in life with the salaries they get paid? Bank the principal and live off simple interest of their ridiculous millions.

Bank the principal and live off of simple interest if you make ridiculous millions for being an athlete, coach, or pseudo-celebrity……Didn’t make the millions with your brains, so don’t lose it by thinking this was a smart investment.
