Countdown: Mizzou paranoia, Mora rant and Auburn (again)

School time means counting time!

School time means counting time!

The Count never liked back-to-school sales as a young winged mammal. Back-to-school sales meant going back to school. Also getting out of bed. Also going to Sears instead of the cool dudes store and, “No mom, I don’t think that shirt hanging by the deluxe set of 68 screwdrivers and drill bits is cute. Can we go now?” But now back-to-school stuff is great, because we get things like spies in sports bras at Missouri football practice, and Jim Mora trying to feign innocence at UCLA, and more potential problems at Auburn. Here we go again. We count down . . .

10. Is that just a clever disguise?

Gary Pinkel: "Ahh, but the strawberries. That's where I had them. They laughed at me but I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt and with geometric logic..."

Capt. Gary Pinkel Queeg: "Ahh, but the strawberries. That's where I had them. They laughed at me but I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt and with geometric logic... Hello?"

Lilly is hoping for some company.

Lilly is hoping for some company.

The paranoia of football coaches never ceases to amaze the Count. The Falcons, like every NFL team, doesn’t want media to report on certain things in practices and often shoos local TV news crews off the field during  parts of practice (even though there are fans with flip cams on the hillside pushing “record”). I used to watch the 49ers practice back in the day when the king of paranoia, Bill Walsh, presided. We would whisper to each other on the sideline, “Sssshhh. Montana is throwing to No. 80.” Walsh never thought that was funny. Anyway, I bring this up because Missouri coach Gary Pinkel seems to be getting a little paranoid before his first SEC game against Georgia. The Tigers were holding practice the other day and noticed two lovely coeds running the stadium steps. He had an assistant coach chase them out. The photo was snapped by Eric Blumberg of KOMU-TV. We don’t know if Pinkel thought the young women were spies or figured might just be distracting his players. In either case: Really? If things are that fragile, Mizzou is going to have problems this season. (On a related note, the Count wishes to extend an open invitation to the pictured Missouri coeds. They are welcome to jog around my kitchen while I’m working. Also, Lilly The Wonder Dog would enjoy the company.)

9. Feeling a little dizzy? . . .

I’m really hoping the “SEC moment” on Sept. 8 isn’t too much for the folks from Missouri. (I suspect not. Just needed something to lead into this video.) Via SI’s Hot Clicks.

8. Jim Mora keeps tripping over his tongue …

Jim Mora has a habit of saying the wrong thing. (Getty Images)

Jim Mora has habit of saying wrong thing. (Getty Images)

I don’t know how good of a coach Jim Mora really is — I suspect average — because his mouth and possibly a secret room in some dark corner of his cranium keeps getting in the way. Mora could be a charming guy when you got him alone for 7½ minutes when he was with the Falcons. But he said and did a lot of really dumb things. Like going on a Seattle radio show to say he wanted the Washington job (while his team was scrambling to try to make the playoffs). Like when he chose to defend the team’s mandate of having the offensive linemen not talk to the media — ever. When somebody referenced past Atlanta greats like Mike Kenn and Jeff Van Note, who spoke to the media and were team leaders, Mora responded something along the lines of, “Did they ever win a Super Bowl?” There was more, but you get the point. But Mora’s worst shoot-from-the-lip moment may have came the other day. He attempted to praise his current employer, UCLA, by saying on a radio show, “We don’t have murders a block from our campus.” Oy. Two grad students at crosstown rival USC had been shot and killed just off campus back in April. Mora later denied knowing that. Of course. He also denied that he was specifically referencing USC. Of course. He also denied being psychotic. Duh. Mora says stupid things, then plays innocent, then tries to backtrack when forced by a superior (read: Arthur Blank or UCLA chancellor). The tone in this video reminds me a lot of the apology press conference he was forced to have in Blank’s office following the Washington radio mishap.

7. Still waiting . . .

Shirts come in all sizes for fans, mockers, coaches and xxx

Shirts will fit coaches or Student Athlete Development Coordinators.

The Count has been waiting anxiously for the next addition to his back-to-school wardrobe. It’s pictured to the left. Made the purchase last week from Skreened.com and it still hasn’t arrived. So they must either be back-ordered or the whole thing is a scam by Bobby Petrino to raise funds until he can find a Division III school to hire him. When it arrives, we promise a followup photo.

6. Does she need an agent?

As a public service announcement, this Jewish bat would like to assure all of you that Jews do NOT own all of the banks and Hollywood, and if they do then clearly I’m not getting my share of the wealth. But as long as we’re on the subject of stereotypes (with apologies to Sandy Koufax and Hank Greenberg) . . . (via someecards)

aly-raisman-jewish-olympics-gold-sports-ecards-someecards

5. Once more, with feeling …

I think it’s become a tradition now for jilted fans to burn their replica jerseys and sports memorabilia when a star athlete changes teams. We saw it in Cleveland with LeBron James. We’re now seeing it in Orlando with Dwight Howard. It was different in Atlanta. People burned Joe Johnson jerseys when he actually was here. (Kidding! We kid! Sort of.) Anyway, here’s one video of a poster burning. I’m avoiding posting some other video burnings because of profanity from the narrator (but feel free to check YouTube) . . . .

4. Just when the hangover was healing . . .

Blast from the past: Cecil Newton. (Getty Images)

Blast from the past: Cecil Newton. (Getty Images)

Nobody has brought up any conspiracy theory involving Auburn, Cam Newton or Cecil “Huggy Bear” Newton for a while. But the Count senses there may be problems again down Auburn way. Coveted recruit Jovon Robinson, a running back from Memphis, is being held out of practice while the NCAA looks into allegations that his transcripts were falsified. His former guidance counselor in Memphis has resigned after admitting she falsified a transcript to get him into Auburn. And then she climbed into her new Trans Am and drove off, although I might have made that up. This is where we should insert that Auburn is not being accused of any wrongdoing, much like the school never was accused of any wrong doing after Cam Newton transferred there. Also in the news: The recruitment of former Alabama commitment Reuben Foster is being looked into after he suddenly changed his school of choice to Auburn. For the record: I’m not into recruiting. At all. Just the conspiracies. Also for the record: The standard bid for a top SEC recruit is $180,000.

3. This week’s Dumbest Man on Earth: Terrance Knighton (or Chad Johnson)

Chad Johnson after his release from prison, maybe on his way to Terrance Knighton's house. (AP photo)

Chad Johnson after his release from prison, maybe on his way to Terrance Knighton's house. (AP photo)

So after Chad Johnson/Ocho Cinco/Oucho Grease Fire was appropriately drop-kicked by the Miami Dolphins for allegedly head-butting his wife, Evelyn Lozada — although Dolphins coach Joe Philbin claimed: ““It was not reactive nor was it based on one single incident.” (read: He stunk) — there were some interesting reactions. The dumbest, not surprisingly, came on Twitter, which allows people the opportunity to vent without the annoying delays of a filter between the brain (go with it) and the finger tips (nimble and athletic). We give you: Jacksonville defensive tackle Terrance Knighton. He had these consecutive Tweets at @YouGotRoasted96 the other night after hearing the news of Johnson’s arrest:

“8/12. 9:42 p.m.: Did evelyn know that when she called the police that she was putting her mans job in jeopardy?”

“8/12: 9:45 p.m.: I’m not saying that it was OK for the headbutt, but did she really feel like her life was threatened enough to call the police?

So let me get this straight: 1) A woman should allow herself to be assaulted and not tell anybody if there’s a chance that her husband might lose his job; 2) A woman should allow herself to be assaulted and not tell police if she doesn’t think she is going to die. Because then it’s really not a big deal. Did I get that right, Terrance? I would say Terrance Knighton needs to be locked up simply for being a geranium. But he already plays for Jacksonville, so I guess there’s only so much punishment one man can take.

2. Ryan Lochte: “I pee gold.”

I don’t know about you,  but I think Olympic gold medal swimmer Ryan Lochte has a real future as a high school health teacher. (Pretty funny stuff from Funnyordie.com, which I somehow missed before now.)

Of course, this reminds me of the greatest pool cleaner known to mankind, Carl Spackler

1. And finally: The Chia Panther?

Would you fear this defensive lineman? Doh!

Would you fear this defensive lineman? Doh!

Carolina defensive end Thomas Keiser admits that he consumes chia seeds — yes, the same seeds used to grow those tacky “Chia Pets.” He told a writer for the team’s website: “People ask me all the time if it’s the same stuff that’s in Chia Pets. It is. I’ll have probably two or three tablespoons [in water] every day. … It helps hydrate you, because it absorbs 10 times its weight in water. And instead of the water just going in your system and flushing right out, it’s going to sit in you longer.” I’m not going to debate the alleged nutritional benefits of the seeds. I just wouldn’t want to risk waking up one morning and looking like Chia Homer or Chia Scooby.

Chad Johnson? Geez. What an idiot- bully too.

Regarding all the stuff with AU I hate to say it but it looks like a big to do about nothing. Trovon Robinson could lose his eligibility because a guidance counselor wanted to get him eligible for college- not necessarily Auburn. I don’t see how AU has anything to do with that.

It was a little suspicious that Bama’s top recruit Reuben Foster suddenly flipped to Auburn. But he transferred to Auburn high school, got acclimated to the town and made friends with a couple classmates that signed with AU including the son of one of the coaches. I don’t see anything there regarding NCAA violations.

Regarding Auburn’s issues I don’t see anything there. The high school guidance counselor was just trying to help him get eligible for any college- not necessarily AU. As for Foster his flip to AU was at first suspicious but then again this guy transferred to Auburn high school, decided he liked the town and environment, and got to be friends with 2 classmates who are committed to AU and one of them is a coach’s son. Its no surprise he changed his committment to AU.

DP, no my nickname was given to me in the locker room

to my wedge play.
Go to Google, punch in Sports Illustrated History, Ken Stabler,
jail. Happened in ‘79, reporter on his way back from Super
Bowl in Miami, decided he would stop in Foley and dig up
a story on Stabler. Went around town, asking the folks if
Stabler was an alcoholic, and a lot of other questions. Local
sheriff got wind of it, and pulled him over coming out his motel,
and the deputy reached under the fender and pulled out a magnetic

You know one of our last OCC road games – vs a team so lousy, they fired they HC before the season as over, the victory over UGA notwithstanding.

Now that might now mean anything this season, and I hope it doesn’t. But Richt’s Dawgs haven’t played well on the road, nor on neutral fields in a few years. If you have a short memory, go back through our past schedules on sicemdawgs.com.

Hey Wilson Picket, please cite each instance of corruption for Auburn? I think you have them confused with Alabama.

Since 1992, Auburn has won more SEC games than any team in the West Division. Three perfect seasons, more than anybody in the SEC. It has won two SEC championships, won or shared seven division championships and won two National Championships. It has done that without being found guilty of a major violation since 1993. The hard truth is it gets little credit for that accomplishment beyond our alumni and fans.

What has thUGA done int that time?

Another hack job just like your fellow hack Carvell.

Let’s see. The recruitment of Foster is not being looked into by the NCAA. That is a bunch of made up baloney you conjured up. The only thing Foster’s mother said is they were meeting with an organization when Carvell somehow got a ‘tip’ and contacted her about it. Nice job leading the question with NCAA when in fact it is the AHAA they are meeting with. Poor lady got confused with the acronyms, as she was taken by surprise by Carvell’s questioning since her quoted comment/response to the Carvell’s inquiry was, ‘How did you guys know’.

And the meeting with the AHAA has NOTHING to do with recruitment, it has to do with Foster transferring from a GA high school to a AL high school. It’s actually standard practice these days to validate reasons for transferring.

But that story just doesn’t garner the website hits and get the dawg nation whipped up into a frenzy now does it?

Now let’s move on to Jaquay Williams. Besides the overt attempt by Carvell to get him to switch his commitment in February, JW’s recruitment isn’t being investigated by anybody. JW is waiting to get clearance from the NCAA clearinghouse, just like every other athlete headed to play college ball. The clearinghouse didn’t accept a class he took 2 summers ago, so he is taking an online class to satisfy that SINGLE requirement. His test scores and other academics are in great shape and ALREADY passed/accepted by the clearinghouse.

But that factual story doesn’t garner website hits and whip the blog readers into a frenzy now does it?

Got news for you about Jovon Robinson. The AU coaching staff and compliance department has known about the potential transcript issue for months now. They are actually on top of their game and thoroughly investigate rumors instead of running out and publishing them as if they are the gospel. See they like to get to the bottom of things before they open their mouths and embarrass themselves like the AJC does on a regular basis.

A rogue Tennessee booster ’somehow’ had information that his transcript had been altered. Now how would that be? Wonder if that information would have surfaced had he signed with the vols. Hmm……

And the guidance counselor didn’t admit to falsifying his transcript so HE COULD GET INTO AUBURN. What the counselor admitted to was changing the transcript. Turns out that changing of the transcript was when he was a freshman or sophomore in high school and the latest rumor(since you guys regard them all as fact), is that his high school football coach had 1 grade changed to keep him eligible for football WITHOUT HIS KNOWLEDGE back in his freshman or sophomore year.

But that hardly is as sensational as implying the counselor changed grades so that Jovon could get into Auburn and then implying said counselor drove off in a new trans-am someone associated with Auburn supposedly bought him.

You should consider a career in fiction writing, as you have a gift.

How can it be Mark Richt’s fault that he signed 107 recruits to play here 2012 season, and has only 67 remaining ?

Just as how can it be Mark Richt’s fault that we’ve Lost 25 games the current 6-year period, an average of OVER 4 Losses a season the current 6-year period ?

Instead of discussing whose fault the current mess is, bad press every day another player gone missing from our roster, why don’t we talk about the results all this has given rise to ?

Is it Mark Richt’s fault that we’ve Lost 9 games in a row to SEC teams who put up a winning SEC record starting with the Kentucky game in 2007 ?

Is it Mark Richt’s fault that we’ve Lost 7 games in a row to teams who made the Top 10 after Auburn in 2006 ?

Is it Mark Richt’s fault that we’ve Lost 9 games in a row to every team who made any top 25 poll ?

I think we should concentrate instead of trying to determine whose fault all this mess is, instead on GATA and actually beating the top teams.

Is it Mark Richt’s fault who he is signing to scholarships as recruits 2013 ? Or, that 10 of just those signed by Mark Richt to scholarships 2013 will also be – just gone ?

Do we not say that Mark Richt has put more scholarship recruits to UGA into the NFL than any coach in America ?

Matt “Choke” Ryan — “Speaking of Jim Mora Jr……
Still the last coach to win a playoff game for th Falcants ” << Don’t you have a job or something
__________________________________________________

Yes I served the country for 20 plus years in the military (retired).

Now speaking of jobs – I was about to ask you the same question buddy.

Don't get upset because you are bias

**************************
If what you say about your military service is true, then you are a disgrace to the military with your constant race-baiting, your incessant berating of Ryan/the Falcons, and your obsessive defense of Vick. The military is better off without you; the blogs would improve as well if you retired from them.

“Jeff Schultz, pretty funny”,

I’m a die hard Bulldog fan, but I live in “Realville.” And before you make too much fun of Mizzou, consider they beat the snot out of mighty Colorado (26-0), the week after the Buffaloes beat UGA a couple of years back.

In the meantime, have some respect for our first SEC opponent.

Hey, you weren’t one of the UGA fans on here last August, telling all of us that, “Boise St can’t handle SEC speed and size!!!” now were you?

Sorry for the double post. My previous post still hasn’t shown up, and there’s some sort of delay in the comment submittals this morning.

No reason, however, to make out that Mizzou, picked to finish # 42 in the nation this season, who is # 66 in the nation in won/lost record over the current 30-year period all the way back to 1982 to present a 160-185-7 Losing Won/Lost Record for 30 years, is some great team whom we picked to join The SEC because they are the nation’s top 5 team.

Their QB is a running quarterback and he is NO CONTACT in practice after shoulder surgery on his throwing shoulder over the Summer.

They were an 8-5 team in big xii with him.

Missouri put forth the

# 61 NCAA Total Defense in 2011

Mizzou LOST its entire team from 2011.

MIZZOU 2011-2012 NCAA Rankings :
# 61 Total Defense NCAA
# 50 Net Punting
# 55 Punt Returns
# 53 Kick-Off Returns
# 94 Pass Defense
# 54 Sacks of Opposing Quarterbacks
# 71 on 3rd Down Conversions with your Offense
# 75 on 3rd Down Conversions allowed by your Defense

You get 50,000 fans at your stadium most games in the middle of nowhere, 1500 miles round-trip for me. Your stadium will be filled with Bulldogs. You have no idea what you are in for in The SEC. You don’t have a football team.

8-5 and you are world-beaters ?

I hardly think so. UGA is starting the season out ranked # 6 in the nation. Your running game will NOT be better than our running game. And, that’s all you’ve got : a running game.

It is a poor match-up Mizzou running offense against UGA’s Stout Rush Defense.

MIZZOU KEY LOSSES for 2012 :
___________________________
OFFENSE: Jerrell Jackson-WR, Wes Kemp-WR, Michael Egnew-TE, Jayson Palmgren-OG, Austin Wuebbels-OG, Dan Hoch-OT, Grant Ressel-K
DEFENSE: Jacquies Smith-DE, Terrell Resonno-DT, Dominique Hamilton-NG, Luke Lambert-SLB, Trey Hobson-CB, Kenji Jackson-SS

Mizzou is picked to come in # 42 next season. Welcome to The SEC. Missouri has lost its entire football team this off-season, except for its running quarterback and its running backs.

If we are supposed to lose to this cruddy team 2012, who else do we lose too ? We will wipe the floor with Mizzou.

“. . . shoulder surgery on his throwing shoulder . . . .”

You sure that wasn’t ankle surgery on his throwing shoulder, TB?

Hope you’re right about the Mizzou game, but like Joey said, we’ve played worse teams on the road and lost–and we’ll be missing some key players. I prefer to take a “cautiously optimistic” approach on the blogs, rather than to berate our opponent and brag about how much better we are than them (on paper) before we meet on the field.

Joey’s right of course, that we’ve lost lots of games recently.

25 Losses current 6-year period.

Surely, we better than the # 42 team in the nation Mizzou.

Surely, we can beat a team who is # 71 on 3rd downs converted by offense

Surely, we can beat a team who is # 75 on 3rd downs defense given up 1st downs

I am sorry. If this is all we can get worked up to beat, maybe we should schedule some real opponents – especially for me seasons’ tickets 2012 which are all real sucky games.

You have to be in the finalists for Dumba$$ of the year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MC was told by Foster’s Mama that they were headed to The BARN to meet with the NCAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your former HC told the Free World that The BARN paid/pays their players!!!!

Word on the street is some who were NOT paid are going to spill their guts to the NCAA!!!!!!!!

What is the latest number of BARNERS in prison(Not just arrested but officially sentenced) and how many will be joining them in the near future?????????????

Does ANY other SEC team have former/current players doing time for felonies?????????

How many locals were arrested for HINDERING the investigation in the recent murders near the BARN campus??????????????

I am not LMAO!!!!!! This a truly serious/sad situation for the BARN Nation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can’t figure-out how Jeff read Terrance Knighton’s tweets and came to the coinclusion that he did. Terrance Knighton tweeted that he did not condone the act. And the call to the police was clearly made when she was not under voilence or danger. Terrance Knighton’s tweet was a simple question of whether Evelyn Lozada had evaluated potential outcomes. Jeff’s reaction is that Terrance Knighton needs to be locked up Terrance Knighton needs to be locked and that Terrance Knighton has the intelligence of a geranium. Wow!

There is still that we do not know about the situation. Did Chad Johnson start the arguement? Did Chad Johnson do the accusing? Did Chad Johnson pick a fight with Evelyn Lozada? Was Chad Johnson actually defending himself? We don’t know the answers to these things. But from watching Basketball Wives, we see that Evelyn Lozada is arguementative, she picks fights, she makes accusations and relishes arguements… and she does hit people – regularly.

Terrence never tweeted the things that Jeff concluded. Terrence never tweeted that women should allow themselves to be assaulted, or that being assulted is really not a big deal. Jeff askes, “Did I get that right,” No, Jeff, you got it wrong.

First of all, you are definitely into recruiting. No shame in that, just accept it and admit it. Second, this was a very entertaining blog. Everything was funny except for the Jewish joke, as nobody who isn’t Jewish thinks those are funny. In the future, you should curb writing the more serious Op-Ed stuff and stick to the uber sarcasm and shaming of those currently making sports headlines. Great read Jeff
