Ryan should benefit from arrival of Koetter (and Samuel)

FLOWERY BRANCH – The Falcons’ acquisition of Asante Samuel this offseason might prove to be more than just an upgrade of the team’s secondary. He also opened Matt Ryan’s eyes a little bit with some analysis.

“Yeah, he crushed me,” Ryan said, laughing. “But he has a way of crushing everybody. We played against him four times, and I think he had like three picks against me.”

The Falcons opened training camp Thursday. Ryan had just finished talking about his revised offseason workouts (increased weight-lifting), his new approach to practices and meetings (maintaining consistent focus, discipline and intensity through the year) and the hiring of a new offensive coordinator (Dirk Koetter), all of which he hopes will result in something significantly north of another playoff shutout.

It’s no secret that Ryan hasn’t been good in his three playoff games. It hit him shortly after (and possibly during) the 24-2 loss to the New York Giants that something had to change.

Taking ownership wasn’t a problem Thursday. “When you look at the past season, and leading up to this point of your career, I certainly haven’t been where I need to be,” he said. “I haven’t been as good as I can be.”

He sought and received critiques from opposing players. Quarterbacks “tend to not be too rough on each other,” he said. But Samuel, acquired from Philadelphia, didn’t hold back after arriving and provided some revelations.

Like what?

“Well, I’m not going to tell you,” Ryan said, smiling.

But he is not shy about addressing the obvious: He knows the offense has to get better, and particularly more efficient in the red zone, for this team to have any postseason.

“When you look at the difference between a first-round exit and a Super Bowl championship, the game shakes on five, six, seven plays,” he said. “We have to be better. I have to be better.”

They also have to be less predictable. If we can’t yet know how effective Koetter will be, we at least know things had hit a wall with Mike Mularkey. Play-calling seemed rubber-stamped from the week before. It’s less about the common refrain, that Ryan needs to throw deep more, than it is the offense needs to be more varied.

I have found there to be one absolute in football: When guys in the press box are calling out the play before the snap, there’s a problem.

It’s hard for an offense to get shut out in a game. When a team gets 10 to 12 possessions, it’s bound to stumble into at least a couple of field goals.

Mularkey didn’t understand the criticism. He lived at the intersection of arrogant and insufferable. He seemed closed to any suggestions that his offense had become predictable and that halftime adjustments by opponents possibly led to a drop-off in production. He dismissed these as mere theories from “outside sources.”

“The general public and yourself would not know that unless you studied film, knew what the game plan was and knew what was happening in the first half and not the second half,” Mularkey said last season.

Oh, woe be our feeble minds.

Mularkey is now disseminating his brilliance in Jacksonville.

Ryan did not take any shots at Mularkey, of course. He even said, “I liked playing for Mike.”

But take note of Ryan’s remarks on Koetter: “He’s been really good in meetings, really upbeat, really positive. Everybody is impressed with how smart he is and how receptive he is to our input. … Dirk’s got a different way of teaching, and a lot of our guys respond to it well. He pushes people differently. Mike was very demanding, very organized. Dirk is as well, but he has a different type of personality. He’s very positive. It’s a different vibe.”

Ryan actually had an impressive year statistically — career highs in yards (4,177), touchdowns (29) and efficiency (92.2) — especially considering he was out there with a just-average running game and too-often less-than-average protection from his line. But he knows he needs to better.

He said the offense most needs to improve on “finishing drives.” Some of that is execution by his teammates. Some of it is play-calling. Some of it is on the quarterback.

“There’s one thing that tells you that you need to do something different, and that’s the end result,” he said.

Winning and losing don’t tell it all; how you play does, and the Falcons haven’t played well in the playoffs and oftentimes have been regular-season underachievers.

The bookend corners should pay huge dividends, for multiple reasons, and yes, you do have to go downfield. You do need to stretch a defense, and get this “Oprah” nonsense out of the playcalling.

We are very lucky to have Matt Ryan………any haters out there that say different are biased and/or ignorant.

I am very concerned about the LT position; however, we all expect a solid LT will be signed after cap casualties hit other teams (IF a solid LT is cut of course).

We have a VERY solid team and we should have a great year.

Any teams out there willing to trade a starting LT for Turner (yeah right LOL)…….on a more serious note, I would trade Turner today for a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick (the problem is I do not think any team would even give us a 7th round draft pick for him)! He is too slow and he makes our offense predictable…………..teams simply load the box and do not worry about running plays or screen passes outside of the offensive tackles (he is not capable of breaking a long run to make the team pay for loading the box). I also do not think I have ever seen him pick up a blitzing defender at a critical juncture which allowed Matt Ryan the needed time to make a play………..how many running backs do this at least once almost every game? I do not blame Turner (he is a great guy and he is giving all he has to the team); however, I do blame the Falcons brass for keeping him around when it is obvious he is well past his prime……..it is past time to move on!

{We would have drafted Adrian Peterson instead of DE Jamal Anderson if the Vikings had not drafted him one pick ahead of us…………..how good would the Falcons have been the past few years if we had been lucky enough to draft Adrian Peterson??? I only make this comment to drive the point home that Turner is detrimental to the team at this juncture.}

Luv ya Jeff Schultz, but your In-The-Spin-Zone

It’s not that Ryan needs to throw deep more. That’s not what we “haters” have been screaming.

It’s that he doesn’t throw a good deep ball. In fact, he’s rather terrible. And because of that, playoff defenses sit on routes 15-yard deep or less and destroy him. AKA the Giants.

Look at the Texans game last year, Ryan missed 2 wide open deep receivers… Wade had his D sit on the short routes, and our offense couldn’t move / score points.

Lets go the other way, look at the Colts game. Ryan did hit Julio on a bomb… yet watch the play like a coach. Julio was WIDE OPEN. Ryan missed him by a mile and Julio had to make a circus catch.

Can we win a Super Bowl with Ryan? yeah, like Brad Johnson & Trent Dilfer won Super Bowls. AKA all our money should be spent on making an awesome D. Let Ryan be a manager.

Dirk Koetter’s entire NFL experience, prior to joining the Falcons, has been as Jacksonville’s offensive coordinator the last five years.

His first year there (2007), the Jags finished 7th in the league in total offense. Since then, they have finished no higher than 15th. And it is debatable how much impact Koetter really had on that 2007 team, since they finished 10th in total offense the previous year, when he was not on the staff. They peaked in 2007 and have since declined.

Granted, they did not have elite personnel other than Maurice Jones-Drew and (early in Koetter’s career there) Fred Taylor, and David Garrard did have his career best season in 2007. But with that said, Koetter’s resume doesn’t exactly jump off the page to indicate that he is a real difference maker. And my contention has consistently been that the Falcons don’t have elite personnel either. Maybe Koetter is more imaginative than Mularkey, but he doesn’t strike me as a guy who can lift less-than-elite personnel to elite status. We’ll see. If these coaching changes don’t squeeze more out of this personnel group, Dimitroff needs to be on the hot seat.

If Ryan had the protection some of the elite QB’s have he might be able to complete deep passes.
Look at Tom Brady. He hae 5,6 seconds in the pocket and rarely gets hit. Ryan gets killed even on the passes he completes. How often do the Mannings get hit? The offensive line makes the QB’S in a lot of cases.

While Samuel is busy giving advice to teammates, hopefully his physical skills at age 31 are still good enough for his gambling tendencies to pay off. He got torched by Larry Fitzgerald last year. Sorry Bob…
But Eli Manning was pressured 582 times, sacked 73 times over the last 3 years according to a study by Profootball Focus; but he was only sacked 12.5% of the time… You know what that tells you? he get the ball out quick, and more importantly with a purpose!

Ryan on the other hand was only pressured 488, he was sacked 67 times for a 13.7% rate. That 1.2% percent higher than Manning who had nearly 100 more pressured drop backs. Something wrong beyond the offense line… He’s not reading the coverages correctly or his receivers can’t shake people. You need a accurate cannon in this league to remedy that case…

Vick got a pass from a lot of fans for years, now they act like standards are so high? LOL Oh please. Save passion for things that matter, these people have been blogging long before you gather your rate they said all those things that you just pointed out there beyond that point now. While otherslike myself have moved on from that fan phase and we just enjoy the NFL for what it is. It is a game that is played for money by people who give their allegiance from money.

I’ll enjoy the sport for what it is; but I understand at its root is the business ( that started as a not-for-profit), but like Maj. league baseball before it, people have made it a secular quasi-religion… and It is simple as that… Funny, the same people who denigrate the city of Atlanta by forming little cluster cities separate from the environs of Atlanta are generally the ones who scream the loudest about home teams… That is an amazing dichotomy…

Let me explain how a #1 pick’s career should look:

Eli Manning: 8 seasons, 2 super bowls, 2 SB MVPs, doesn’t care about regular season MVPs and dynasty talk, concensus Top 5 QB.

Now THAT is someone to brag about. So what doesn’t have to brag about again? He’s been in the league longer and had plenty of talent. But I don’t see any rings or hardware. Just all talk, and too busy writing tell all books. LOL

It works both ways. People call themselves die hard Falcons fans but then turn against the team when a player leaves after screwing it up for himself and pissing on the team and the city, their hometown. and they still defend him. Now THAT is amazing.

JSS it’s football man. Your big words mean little to nothing when it comes down to x’s and o’s. If you enjoy the game that much and appreciate it for what it is dont come on a Falcons blog and bash them. Find you a team and use your big words to describe how excited you are about that team. The best thing about being a fan of an NFL instead of a single team is that you realize that every kind of quarterback has won a Super Bowl… Past their prime ones (Unitas), unimaginable ones (Dilfer), superstars (Namath), and even drunkards (Stabler)… However the great equalizer is that far more have lost across that same spectrum of talent.

That is why I watch football Rob, that journey to one Thisfinal game… And I don’t hate all aspects of the Falcons; but their weaknesses are glaring! It does you absolutely no good to sugarcoat those things under the guise of being a fan.

It doesn’t matter. When the Falcons gave up the farm for Jones, they destroyed their chances at having an offensive line. No matter how fast and deep Julio gets, Matt Ryan will not have time to get the ball to him. Bad, bad move will haunt us this year and probably next. No Playoff wins this year – if they even get there. Show horses have to be groomed; the Falcons have no groomers.

One Falcons Fan’s Prayer for 2102

May this be the year the QB of my favorite football team becomes
Fleeter of foot
Deeper of voice
Stronger of arm
Stouter of body and spirit
And truer of aim with his passes.

May his timidity recede like Tiger Woods’ hairline.

Fill his competitive void with guts and guile and pluck.

May he forsake the five yard out pass
And stand tall in the pocket
As his gifted receivers endeavor to receive.

Teach him that a QB sneak requires that he move in the direction of his enemy.

May he embrace the concept that football is a contact sport – even for him.

And may he (and the team he leads) enjoy the spoils of post-season victory at last.

I ask these things in the name of Arthur Blank and the spirit of Rankin Smith.

Go Falcons.

“Look at Tom Brady. He hae 5,6 seconds in the pocket and rarely gets hit. Ryan gets killed even on the passes he completes. ”

And this is why I don’t think Mularkey was the main problem. As do many others. It was the terribly weak O-line last year that caused most of the problems. Against playoff teams, the coaching can only do so much the mask the weakness.

The line needed an overhaul in the offseason.

Coach

July 27th, 2012

It’s not about Ryan benefitting from them, it’s about the whole team benefitting from them. If Samuel is lighting fires and showing veteran leadership then that is great for everyone, even if he were to never see the field. If Roddy White has said that Koetter has let the team take ownership in the offense and that everyone has “bought in” to it, then we are definitely in a position we haven’t been in since Dan Reeves left. Specific talent of individuals aside, these 2 things are much better than we have had since then.

“It really is a shame that another qb was signed for 42 million less and has 5 playoff wins to zero.”

A bigger shame Philly spent 100M on Vick and have zero playoff wins to show for it LMAO. Damn even TJ Yates can get into the playoffs last year but Vick COULDN”T???????? Damn shame!

QBS drafted since 2008 with playoff wins:

Joe Flacco (5)

Mark Sanchez (4)

Tim Tebow (1)

Matt “CHOKE” Ryan (Zilch, Nadda, Are you kidding?)

As a poster mentioning even Yates made the playoffs, that’s just proof that CHOKE was not the reason for the Falcants making the playoffs. Thanks for proving my point yet again….HA HA.

Making the playoffs is just half the battle. It takes a true leader to win them……..ha ha :)

I can’t wait to see ole Artie clean house and another Vick protype is drafted….ha ha :)

The replace Vick project has failed…..The Great Hope was just a myth :)

Matt Ryan has four winning seasons in a row.

Mike Vick has never done that and never will.

“JSS…….You must have lost a big bet to be so bitter toward one team and players.”

Nope, you guys are hilarious… I gave up my Falcons allegiance the day they hired Petrino… Note to you revisonist, that was months before the Vick case hit the fan… But go ahead keep making up history, it is what you do!

Oh, go back and see the number of times I’ve gotten to whistle and laugh when the Falcons imploded while my detractors had to eat crow… My plate has only been on the table twice… Whereas, their plates have been like Thanksgiving dinner, seemingly never ending! Why do you think they’ve been praying so hard for it to change? They are so tired of eating crow!

“you’re going to get ulcers!”
Nope, my resting pulse rate 58, and my last full scope was clean as a whistle… Anymore lies that wish to share with the world?

This team just isn’t structured to compete… But you guys keep trying to elevate them… Other teams weaknesses (like the Giants and Saints so painfully proved) outweigh anything that you consider a strength… That is reality…

If that’s the case, just keep venting…..if it really keeps you from “exploding”.

“I’ll?, I’m worried, or I worry?” Make up your mind… But seriously, no you guys just personalize way too much… Ryan and any combination of players is not going to y’all over the hump… Enjoy the fantasy as the commercial use to say… Big ole league with a whole lot players to enjoy, but I’m not tying myself to one set of them any more… But I sure know the frauds in this league…

Sorry if my lapse of grammar upset you…..that’s another thing…….well, never mind. Your quote of Daly does not resonate with me……sounds like an excuse, but that’s me.

You do know Chuck Daly right? Hall of Fame… Two time NBA championship coach… Olympic championship coach… Here’s the difference, he was a “realist!”

Don’t feed me Tilapia and sell it to me as Wild salmon! Ground Chuck is not Ground Round… But you guys come on here (daily) and try to sell the football equivalent of red goo meat filler to folks who know better and get up against the salary cap in doing so… They’ve bait and switch y’all!

JSS,

I’d like to genuinely thank you. I appreciate any poster (like Hiramsaint) whose views can drive someone like me (reads the blogs; never posts) to actually post something. However, that’s where my appreciation stops. For someone who is so fond of their copy appearing on these blogs and ripping others for spelling errors, maybe you should start running spellcheck and checking your grammar. Your point is typically more valid when you don’t make the same mistakes you rag on others for. Having said that, there’s one thing that actually bugs me. You say you ceased your allegiance to falcon nation after the Petrino fiasco and you love the game of football. Great! Why spend so much time on a local newspaper blog ripping on one team? You don’t seem to bash any team but the falcons. You don’t seem to root for any other teams either. It seems like you’d want to spend your time on a website that actually focuses on the league– maybe profootballtalk or espn?

Who you claim to be and what you claim to stand for doesnt seem to match up with your actual posts.

No, that was 2008 Detroit Lions… But guess who has the brighter future (aside from the young CB who can’t stay out of the drunk tank)?

The NFL is bigger than your team! Unfortunately for many of us, you are satisfied with the mediocre product being put out in front of the rest of us… You guys get to pretend that you’re elite until the playoffs roll around…

Poor Redcoat…
You know what they say about projecting a misplaced assumption? It leads to being wrong a lot (on your part)… But hey, your bandwagon is tied to Mike Smith and Matt Ryan… You’re like late 1970s versions of Cleveland Browns fans… Just exchange your love for those 0-3 playoff losers with Sam Rutigliano and Brian Sipe!!! Different boat, same creek, and you’ll have no paddle!
