Mark Richt says Georgia may pursue Penn State players

Penn State avoided the “death penalty Monday,” but NCAA sanctions were so severe — including a four-year bowl ban — that players are being allowed to transfer to another school without having to sit out a year.

Will Georgia pounce? Possibly so.

Coach Mark Richt said at a fans’ “UGA Day”  Monday night, “Some colleges are going to be interested in some of their players, and we’re one of those schools. It’s pretty well-documented that we’re under our 85[-scholarship] limit. We’ll try to get in touch with some of these young men and see if they’re interested.”

Approached by a few media members following the event, Richt said he and his assistants already have gone over over Penn State’s two-deep roster. But he was vague — probably intentionally — on what (or how many) players Georgia would pursue.

“We do have some space available and if somebody fits a need and they’re excited about coming we would look into that possibility,” he said at the Cobb Galleria Centre. “There may not be anybody. But we’re at least going to explore. … I don’t want people to think we’re trying to load up a bunch of them. It could be zero, it could be one or two.”

Richt believes coaches are limited to one recruiting phone call per week per player, but admits, “We don’t have a whole lot of previous relationships with kids on that team.”

Personally, I don’t know what structure, if any, the NCAA has set up for this. But this seemingly could get pretty chaotic if all the nation’s coaches start descending on Penn State players.

“I’m sure there were some young man who were recruited by Georgia, as well as every other school,” athletic director Greg McGarity said. “I’m sure it will be active both ways as far as these young men who may or may not want to stay. But it hasn’t even been 24 hours. So it may be jumping the gun for individuals to be assuming things are going to happen. Penn State is still going to play, obviously. There’s some restrictions but it’s not like they’re canceling the football season.”

Some other comments from Monday night:

McGarity on the NCAA’s sanctions against Penn State: “I think it’ll take 48 to 72 hours to digest everything. I’m interested to read the documents to see all the information that’s there, other than just the high points. Like the president of Oregon State said, this is like a gut check for everybody to make sure their house is in order. In all situations like this, whether it’s this or Southern Cal, it’s lessons learned.”

McGarity on the NCAA penalizing Penn State for non-competitive issues: “There’s several areas of NCAA rule book that talks about ethics, talks about reporting violations, and whether that’s a violation of NCAA rules or just basic principles of life…”

McGarity also said he and his senior staff went over every page of the Freeh Report when it came out ‘just to make sure we weren’t missing anything.”

Dogs basketball coach Mark Fox on the NCAA’s decision: “We’re talking about crimes against children. Let’s just hope – and there’s no comparison here, because the offenses are different – but will the NCAA be as stiff with people who cheat to get a competitive advantage? For them to get involved in this, it’s groundbreaking.”

Fox on Mark Emmert being compared to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell: “I’ll say this: Roger Goodell is the one commissioner who’s not afraid to penalize his stars. He’s not afraid to say, ‘This is how it’s gonna be.’ I have a lot of respect for how he operates on the whole. It’s what leaders are supposed to do.”

Thomas, are you ashamed of your original name? Why the cute little shots at Coach Richt? Why so disrespectful of CMR? You’ve never found an article that you didn’t take “cheap-shots” at Mark Richt. Wish you were HC @ UGA so your family could see how useless you have become with your only purpose in life being to attack this fine man non-stop. Thomas, give your obsession a rest. Maybe the voices in your head will go away…

Tommy,
You’re posting about current news? Your post are the same as they were when I read your very first post months ago. Same old Richt’s got to go. UGA will never win. The sky is falling, and yes I have been consistant in asking you to chill out. Like I said, changing your name doesn’t make anyone care what you say anyway…

Next year’s SEC Media Days will require that the coaches show up in tuxedos and tophats. They will be taken to the media center in a horse-drawn carriage and the press will present a glass slipper to the coach of the team favored to win the conference championship. Anything conceivable will be done to bring attention to this woefully insecure group.

If Penn state kids were to transfer they would go to another big 10 school. That should be obvious. They would love to play for U Meyer.

Regarding NEW football coaches at UGA, their most recent add on was a former Pn State coach that is now assigned to either recruiting or PT with Joe T. He left that program late last season, or in Jan of this current year.

This guy will help UGA hone in on some of these kids.

“Tampa, you are a bigger cool-aid drinker than most of the UGA fans on this blog. You have 2 of the top 10 Q.B’s from last years recruiting class, big deal. UGA had the #1 running back from last year’s class, and how did he work out. You are so wrapped up in these rankings as are all UGA fans. These rankings mean nothing, Murray was a top 3 Q.B. and Mason wasn’t in top 10, nor was Mett. And unfortunately, both have stronger arms and are better Q.B’s than Murray if given the chance. You will see this year in Mett. at LSU.”

You’ve hit on a solid inarguable point 1953dawg. Hardly the only example of Favoritism that has led us to the point where Mark Richt feels it is his appointed duty to finally be the poster boy for every Penn State blog that he is studying Penn State’s sorry recruiting’s 2-Deep because the world knows “it’s pretty well-documented that we’re under our 85-scholarship limit.”

Aaron Murray said he’s working hard to “improve on my footwork,” which he believes will improve his accuracy. “I haven’t been as accurate as I need to be.”

“DAWGS were on TILT; 31 – 0 at the half. Some say the DAWGS have never fully recovered. One thing that is not up for debate is that the DAWGS didn’t finish that season inside the AP Top 10 or since.”
__________________________________________________________________
As there are site after site where data is compared including sites such as Coaches by the Numbers, National Champs dot Net, College Football Stats dot com and anyone else easily looking up where the team who started out the season a top-ranked team in 2007 only to end the season 6-6 not even in a bowl game and not even a winning record, here we have your Major Point in your lead-up GawdSport stating that we have not finished “that season inside the AP Top 10 or since.”

Obviously the question is : Why then LIMIT your discussion to just where the team was ranked when we played them, rather than that which the opponent, or us for that matter too, actually earned for that season ? A team for a season either is or is not considered Top 10 that season, Top 5 that season, indeed Top 25 for that season, or not.

GawdSport, even so, here is even your Summary :
________________________________________

“Overall the trend is feast on nonconference and weaker SEC opponents, but sub .500 against upper echelon teams, and in the last 2 years we’re getting behind the 8-ball early in the season, fighting in the middle to catch up and closing weakly.”

__________________________
I guess that about summarizes it.
__________________________

GawdSport then goes on :

“A similar trend is continued against Top 25 and Top 10 teams. This time looking at losses against Top 25 at home and the QB throws 2+ INT’s the DAWGS are 0’ fer (0-5). The DAWGS have faced (20) Top 25 opponents in 4 years; in half of those game (10 for Barners reading) the DAWGS QB has thrown 2+ picks and the overall record is 1-9 when that occurs – the QB is making bad decisions.”
_________________________________________________________________________
GawdSport, sir : Top 25 at the time of game and Top 10 at time of game. And, sir, seems to me like I can recall vividly the myriad of fumbles by both Matthew Stafford (which still continue to haunt his NFL career as well) and fumbles by little Aaron Murray which just stand-out in my mind why we can’t win the Big Games. Perhaps you struggle with what is a big game and what isn’t. I do not suffer from that malady, sir. A Big Game is a game not against a 4-win Alabama team that season. Nor, is it a win over Alabama a season in which you criticize Alabama for also losing to Louisiana Monroe. A Big Win is a Win over a Conference Foe who makes a winning record that season, which you do not address and which we’ve not accomplished in 9 consecutive games starting with Kentucky was back in 2007 – and, then goes on to make the AP Poll Top 10.

__________________________________
USING YOUR OWN CRITERIA, RIGHT ?
__________________________________

Just to be consistent, right ?

A Big Win could be then any team who actually earns AP Poll Top 10 that season. By your own definition, then, we’ve not accomplished this either after the win over Auburn # 9 way back in 2006.

The closest we’ve come, GawdSport, you have this to say about as a Caption under a photo in your treatise, sir :

____________________________________
“Thank Gawd for GT being overrated.” (2009)
____________________________________

Other than that, we have nothing. And, even with that win based upon not a Pass-Happy Offense, we did not make any top 25 poll.

And, as for your next foray into pictures of data sir, with this back-drop, you start out with Matthew Stafford in your 4-year study – like these trends have only occurred over the last 4 years only with our 3 wins in 16 games against your famous

_________________________________________
finish ” “that season inside the AP Top 10 or since.”
_________________________________________

And, you put at the top of this part of your study

Matthew Stafford & Joe Cox 18-8
Aaron Murray 16-11

Why not just leave it at that ?

For that is the same record as Georgie tek, whom you brag we beat in 2009.

34-19 same as Georgie tek current 4-year period in your study, sir.

Oh, we play in The vastly superior SEC ? Really ? By your own admission, whom is we’ve beat in The vastly superior SEC who even made a winning record that season starting with the Kentucky game way back in 2007, GawdSport, sir ?

_____________________________________________________________________________
“there are a couple of bagels in AM’s resume. 0’fer on the Road against Top 25 teams, as well as a bagel against Top 10 teams. Additionally AM has more than twice as many road losses as did his predecessors (9 to 4). Also, there has been the criticism that AM pads stats in non-ranked OOC games; it appears valid (130.1 in 8 games).”
_____________________________________________________________________________
Aaron Murray has a LOT more bagels than just that. Billed as a dual-threat QB, which at 5′ 11″ and 197 lbs of 4.7 speed – slower than SEC Defensive Linemen as we’ve all witnessed, Aaron Murray has 7 carries a game all 27 games averaging 1 yards per carry with 23 fumbles by him and 56 sacks sir. How could any analysis of little Aaron Murray not even begin to bring this up, GawdSport, sir ?

GawdSport, let me know when you get back to it – this discussion of Aaron Murray and how 3 senior Offensive Linemen are somehow to BLAME when all 3 are now in the NFL ?

Still say NCAA has no role in criminal matters such as the travesties that occurred at PSU. If PSU had not consented to the NCAA’s actions in this matter I think they could have won legally on lack of jurisdiction over such matters. The only voices of reason in this regard have been Jay Bilas (a lawyer btw) and Brent Musberger (Sp?). There may be others but these are the only two I’ve heard speak up about how the NCAA has no business handing out sanctions based upon child molestation criminal cases. Those kind of sick crimes are the business of the criminal justice system (as far as punishing the individual violator) and the civil court system (as far as monetary damages).

Like I said all along

July 29th, 2012
8:24 am

It doesn’t make sense that Mark Richt would announce that he is, or isn’t, going after Penn State players. The NCAA doesn’t have any jurisdiction over the entire football coaching staff covering up and protecting, still allowing the pedophile to have complete access to the entire football complex, including the showers, which goes all the way up to the board of trustees, so that they could have the competitive advantage of announcing that only which they wish to allow to be made public so their football program could be perceived in only the most positive light ? Dawg Tired, that makes zero sense, sir. None. Less than none. Sure they do. If the NCAA does not have jurisdiction over this, what would you have them have jurisdiction over ? Nothing I presume. This gets at the very core of collegiate athletics – especially the football coaching staff, Dawg Tired.

_________________
Against whom are we to judge this S&C 2012 ? 12th year now, and we have 3 wins against teams who made the top 10 out of 16 games. 2011-2012 is simply the most recent version of that, and 2012, I don’t even see one – well, there’s 1 opponent who made any top 25 poll and 11 opponents who average only 4.8 wins each. With the entire S&C staff reporting to Joe Tereshinski II, every one quit. The top teams do not have 68 scholarship recruits, and if we’re looking for results in the 4th quarter against the top teams, it will be only the last 2 games, game 13 and game 14 in those 2 games’ fourth quarters then, to even begin to look for results against the quality elite – which we just ain’t.

The Differential in the 4th Quarter ?

How about half-time adjustments and S&C for the 3rd Quarter ?

In the only 4 games against teams who made any top 25 poll 2011-2012, we scored a grand total of 14 points in the 3rd Quarters of all 4 games combined, while our top 25 opponents put up 63 – a Differential of – 49 (minus 49.)

Yes, after the 3rd Quarter in these 4 games, we put up 43 points, while they put up 57 – a Differential of – 14 (minus 14.)

When your coaching staff is out-coached including half-time adjustments and the overall S&C of your team for the 2nd half against the only 4 opponents you played who made any top 25 poll by 63 points, 16 points a game, just after half-time, when you did have players…

how is 2012 going to work out with 68 scholarship recruits, assuming we ever do play a team who makes the top 25 ?

I shudder to think how we will do against teams who make the Top 10 in 2012, and even more so to consider that the NCAA has no jurisdiction over a pedophile football coach allowed full reins by the football coaching staff.
