Richt, Georgia have been hurt by too many recruiting risks

HOOVER, Ala. – Mark Richt ignored the red flags and was among the nation’s coaches who lined up around the block for Isaiah Crowell.

He already has seen seven members from his vaunted 2011 recruiting class either kicked out, flunked out or never academically qualified to begin with (“Dream Team”? Anybody?).

Arrests and suspensions likely will lead to four defensive starters missing games next season.

There is a problem again at Georgia — and it matters little that it’s a different one from the past.

Richt, to his credit, no longer responds to players’ criminal or just plain stupid actions by merely making them run stadium steps or suspending their dessert privileges. He has come a long way from enabling Odell Thurman. He suspends players. He kicks them out. He tries to make them understand that getting four or five stars stamped on your forehead by a recruiting site and the ego trip of a signing-day news conference shouldn’t be accompanied by a sense of entitlement (even if it too often does).

The problem now is that too many of the players Georgia is recruiting should be red-lined. The line of risk needs to be pulled back.

Obviously, Richt and his staff are getting a lot right. The Bulldogs are favored to win the SEC East. They’re projected to open the season as a top-10 team.

But imagine if they actually had everybody there.

“We’re not recruiting bad kids,” Richt said in a private media session with local writers Thursday at SEC Media Days. “We’re recruiting a lot of great kids. Other schools are recruiting the same guys.”

Have the negative headlines of this offseason given him reason to pay closer attention to a recruit’s personal blemishes?

“We do find out as much as we possibly can,” he said. “There are rules on how many times we can call a kid and see him in person. We try to maximize those things.”

Sorry. But losing seven of 26 kids from one recruiting class in one year screams that there’s a need for a better filter.

Richt was accurate when he said, “To say that issues aren’t happening around the country isn’t really realistic.”

But losing at least five starters (Crowell plus four on defense suspended) is significant.

Crowell, after multiple suspensions and missteps his freshman season, was bounced following his arrest on felony gun charges. Cornerback Sanders Commings is gone for two games following an arrest for domestic violence. Safety Baccari Rambo (possibly four games), cornerback Branden Smith and linebacker Alec Ogletree all reportedly tested positive for marijuana. Three other freshmen (Nick Marshall, Chris Sanders, Sanford Seay) were kicked out for their reported involvement in a campus theft.

Some of Georgia’s problems can be attributed to having a tougher drug-and-alcohol policy than other schools. But that doesn’t explain everything. The recruiting mistakes will hurt.

The we’ll-be-better-off-without-him rallying cries regarding Crowell makes for a nice locker-room speech. But it’s just not factual. He was Georgia’s best running back — by a long shot — and the Dogs’ potential issues on the offensive line don’t suggest just anybody can be productive.

This will be a team that must rely on its defense and its resolve. The Dogs’ ability to rebound from a 0-2 start with 10 consecutive wins last season said something about the character of the players who aren’t getting arrested (even if that was followed by two more losses to LSU and Michigan State). It’s a team with a solid quarterback (Aaron Murray), strong leadership and several players who bypassed the NFL draft last season to come back for another season. But the suspensions and player losses will hurt.

“There’s been more attrition the last couple of years than there has been since we’ve been at Georgia,” Richt said. “But sometimes that happens. We’ll still have plenty of guys to field a team.”

Then again, if just having enough players was the criteria, there would be celebrations in Toledo and Ole Miss. The question now is whether the Dogs’ chances for a special season have been undone before they’ve even played a game.

Exactly what is it that attracts dumba$$es like you to a UGA blog???

Some of you seem to think that it’s OK to look the other way and sweep problems under the rug. If Ala, Aub, LSU and S Car are all doing it,…..don’t worry about it. Their day of punishment will come. Take a little pride in YOUR school and YOUR coach and support the fact that maybe they’re trying to do the right thing.

Anyone know why Aaron Murray was NEVER suspended for UNDERAGE POSSESSION OF ALCOHOL at that game, where Murray was photgraphed with a Busch beer can in his hand? it’s easy to find, still all over the internet.

Guess Murray is one of Richt’s favorites, must be nice to get FAVORABLE TREATMENT, I guess Richt feels Murray is ENTITLED to more FAVORABLE treatment than the rest of the team.

Do i want those players not to play against the team I cheer for? Yes. Would I feel good about the win? Yes. Would I think the team I cheer for beat the best UGa had? NO. Do i want the rules the SAME for every player and team competing for the BCS NC? hell YES I do, but that is not happening. Should it? YES. Oasis, and we wonder why there is no Discipline on or off the field; and whine then about the tough punishment when the others on the team are kicked-off the team for far less when they are not 1 of the Favorites of Mark Richt.

It sends confused messages to the players. Oh, Mark Richt let Aaron Murray get away with doing that, without a single missed snap. Then, the back-up does something wrong, and he is instantly removed from the team.

That is

NOT DISCIPLINE.

Wow! wow! wow!

UGA’s problem isn’t discipline or risky recruiting, it’s the lack of synchronization between the two. If UGA is going to have a more rigorous discipline program than its rivals, it needs to limit the recruits it targets to those than will likely survive under that policy. Otherwise, you end up losing a lot of prospects (see Thomas Brown’s list) and wasting a lot of energy and resources. UGA needs to focus on recruits that are better suited to its discipline program. If it really wants to go after the same recruits as its rivals, it needs to have the same enforcement program as its rivals.
Academics is not a problem. UGA has enough Turfgrass Management programs to satisfy even the most academically challenged athlete.

Your education is lacking. You use the word discipline to mean punishment. Try replacing the word discipline in your post with the word you meant : punishment.

Discipline is what we need, and have had zero of since 2001 on or off the field with a soft coach who wants to be friends with all his 107 signed recruits, of which he has only 68 remaining to play a 14-game schedule 2012, a very soft schedule and about the type of schedule Georgie tek plays every year forever. Then, the Starters are given chance after chance by Mark Richt with Lax Discipline and Soft Punishment , and the back-ups are summarily dispatched from the program with Harsh Punishment.

Punishment. Now, we have Punishment with a Capital P.

Couple that with the near-fact that the Athens-CC PD, and the campus PD, seem to have zero tolerance; especially compared to the PDs in other SEC towns, as has been attested to by many who’ve lived on those towns and seen it first hand. Same could be true in Norman, OK or College Station…or…

Well Tom got his wish. That is until the game started!!!! It was a blow out for Bryant and company and Tom spent no time entertaining the reporters after the game!!!!!

I cannot seem to find the Thomas Brown Dictionary – - however uniquely acclaimed and renowned it may be to its author. However, I did find Merriam-Webster and Collins online. They describe discipline and punishment as interrelated and in some cases interchangeable.

dis·ci·pline
   [dis-uh-plin] Show IPA noun, verb, dis·ci·plined, dis·ci·plin·ing.

noun
1.
training to act in accordance with rules; drill: military discipline.

2.
activity, exercise, or a regimen that develops or improves a skill; training: A daily stint at the typewriter is excellent discipline for a writer.

3.
punishment inflicted by way of correction and training.

McGarrity’s extension details didn’t exactly show a lot of love or confidence in the direction of the football program and he is not going to let mediocrity stand with the resources that UGA has at it’s disposal. “Crowell was a backup? Ealey and King? Commings, Rambo, Smith, Ogletree…all backups?”
__________________________________________________________________________
How many chances did Mark Richt give Isaiah Crowell ?

How many ?

Caleb King ?

Go ahead, you can say it.

About 10 chances both of them.

Rambo, gone for a-third of the year now. I guess that’s ok with you for a senior leader ? All America ?

Branden Smith ? He used Vance Cuff’s DL to buy 6 guys alcohol, under-age. He’s the starter and the back-up he duped into drive the 6-ton truck around Athens for the sole-purpose of getting drunk in the truck, Dontavius Jackson, gets suspended for all those games, what was it ? 6 games. Nothing for Branden Smith, the starter. Now, we have him arrested and apparently pleading guilty because he paid the fine of hundreds of dollars in Alabama. Do you see any suspension announced for him yet ?

Alec Ogletree ? You mean the guy who plead guilty to stealing ? They who has failed since two (2) drug tests ? You see him with any suspension announced ? Well, do you ?

_________________________
What kind of Disicpline is that ?
_________________________

Sanders Commings, this guy pleads guilty to hitting a girl. And, he is suspended for two (2) games.

Washaun Ealey, another you bring up. These are all guys you brought up. Why do you bring these guys up JonesboroDawg, sir ? Is it because you think it particularly makes Mark Richt look great to discuss these guys you list ? How many chances did Mark Richt give this Starter at Tailback for him, before he pulled his missing-man formation ? How many ? You can say it. 4.

And, the beat goes on. Montez Robinson, beats up his girl. 1-game suspension. Beats up her car. no suspension. Returns and beats her up, a student at UGA in good-standing. Repeatedly, picks her up and slams her into the floor at McWhorter Hall. Then, he throws him off the team, and transfers him to NC State. But, not before he and Mike Bobo go the bloody jail and pray with Montez Robinson.

Odell Thurman. How many chances did he give Odell Thurman ?

Nick Marshall, Chris Sanders, Sanford Seay it is widely reported that the Chief of Police states that he was NEVER CALLED, yet they stole over $ 500 cash and other valuables. Why not call the Police ? What’s that all about ?

Cootie Quintavious Harrow, running-mate of Isaiah Crowell, widely rumored from Columbus during recruiting, had no offers for football, and Mark Richt gives the # 136 Safety a Full Scholarship to My alma mater. He flunks out. Then, he roams around at 3 am with Isaiah Crowell, out they state to a bar with 5 others. 5 football players. 5 scholarship recruits of Mark Richt. You see any suspensions announced for any of them ? Heck no. Isaiah Crowell kicked off the team, and that’s it.

I am fed up with your kind running in here, thinking you are supporting this football program, telling everyone what a great fan of our program you are, turning your back on all this going on – and the 9 losses in a row to every quality football team, going back years and years and years.

@ RHall 55:

How many times does it take for some factual info to penetrate that Neanderthol skull yours???

Get on Google and look up how many players hve been arrested, booted from their college team, etc..

When you find any D-1 school that has a coach that can do all the things you ask out of a CMR replacement and has not had a problem child in at least 10 years tenure I will purchase Billboard space for my apology to you!!!!!!!!!!! If you can’t find anybody like that out there you will just STFU for 12 months!!!!

Deal???????????????????????????

It’s time.

CMR needs to retool his recruiting strategy.

Maybe try what boise does, 3 star guys with character.

Hate to admit it, but it works, and they beat us up and down the field.

The 3 star recruits with character plan

ALSO solve the TEAM CHEMISTRY issue too.

Can we blame Bobo?

The 4 and 5 star Pimma Donnas, kill the team chemistry every year.

We get off to a slow start, with all these suspensions and distractions.

The 3 star guys with character are thankful to be there, and working hard to win a starting position.

And, since they don’t get into trouble as much, helps team chemistry, keeps focus on games, and builds team chemistry better than it’s been.

Works for Peterson.

We need to fire Richt and get Chris Peterson in here. The guy knows how to recruits guys with character, and develop them, and compete every year, at a top 10 level.
