Mark Richt has seen several players arrested and suspended this offseason, including former tailback Isaiah Crowell. (AP photo)
HOOVER, Ala. – Mark Richt ignored the red flags and was among the nation’s coaches who lined up around the block for Isaiah Crowell.
He already has seen seven members from his vaunted 2011 recruiting class either kicked out, flunked out or never academically qualified to begin with (“Dream Team”? Anybody?).
Arrests and suspensions likely will lead to four defensive starters missing games next season.
There is a problem again at Georgia — and it matters little that it’s a different one from the past.
Richt, to his credit, no longer responds to players’ criminal or just plain stupid actions by merely making them run stadium steps or suspending their dessert privileges. He has come a long way from enabling Odell Thurman. He suspends players. He kicks them out. He tries to make them understand that getting four or five stars stamped on your forehead by a recruiting site and the ego trip of a signing-day news conference shouldn’t be accompanied by a sense of entitlement (even if it too often does).
The problem now is that too many of the players Georgia is recruiting should be red-lined. The line of risk needs to be pulled back.
Obviously, Richt and his staff are getting a lot right. The Bulldogs are favored to win the SEC East. They’re projected to open the season as a top-10 team.
But imagine if they actually had everybody there.
“We’re not recruiting bad kids,” Richt said in a private media session with local writers Thursday at SEC Media Days. “We’re recruiting a lot of great kids. Other schools are recruiting the same guys.”
Have the negative headlines of this offseason given him reason to pay closer attention to a recruit’s personal blemishes?
“We do find out as much as we possibly can,” he said. “There are rules on how many times we can call a kid and see him in person. We try to maximize those things.”
Sorry. But losing seven of 26 kids from one recruiting class in one year screams that there’s a need for a better filter.
Richt was accurate when he said, “To say that issues aren’t happening around the country isn’t really realistic.”
But losing at least five starters (Crowell plus four on defense suspended) is significant.
Crowell, after multiple suspensions and missteps his freshman season, was bounced following his arrest on felony gun charges. Cornerback Sanders Commings is gone for two games following an arrest for domestic violence. Safety Baccari Rambo (possibly four games), cornerback Branden Smith and linebacker Alec Ogletree all reportedly tested positive for marijuana. Three other freshmen (Nick Marshall, Chris Sanders, Sanford Seay) were kicked out for their reported involvement in a campus theft.
Some of Georgia’s problems can be attributed to having a tougher drug-and-alcohol policy than other schools. But that doesn’t explain everything. The recruiting mistakes will hurt.
The we’ll-be-better-off-without-him rallying cries regarding Crowell makes for a nice locker-room speech. But it’s just not factual. He was Georgia’s best running back — by a long shot — and the Dogs’ potential issues on the offensive line don’t suggest just anybody can be productive.
This will be a team that must rely on its defense and its resolve. The Dogs’ ability to rebound from a 0-2 start with 10 consecutive wins last season said something about the character of the players who aren’t getting arrested (even if that was followed by two more losses to LSU and Michigan State). It’s a team with a solid quarterback (Aaron Murray), strong leadership and several players who bypassed the NFL draft last season to come back for another season. But the suspensions and player losses will hurt.
“There’s been more attrition the last couple of years than there has been since we’ve been at Georgia,” Richt said. “But sometimes that happens. We’ll still have plenty of guys to field a team.”
Then again, if just having enough players was the criteria, there would be celebrations in Toledo and Ole Miss. The question now is whether the Dogs’ chances for a special season have been undone before they’ve even played a game.

“If Coach Richt…kicks anymore kids off the team, we may not have enough to play 4 quarters of SEC caliber football”
________________________________________________________________________
Now, you are making my point. The answer to which of course is not kicking fewer off as punishment, but actually having some discipline on and off the field.
When Matthew Stafford at Talladega and Aaron Murray at FSU game can be photographed HOLDING A BEER under-age, and play every second of the next game; when little Aaron Murray can Tweet to Boise State pre-game that he is headed to the Dome to get some butt, and play every second of the game, are perfect examples of an utter lack of discipline.
If you can run on this blog and brag that Odell Thurman or Montez Robinson were not afforded as well multiple mulligans for all their bad press too, then you’re a DISNEYdawgs.com troll – and, that is all you will be.
Meanwhile the rest of us, and soon you too, have long-since figured out our utter lack of discipline (not to be confused with tough punishment), we have not beat any team making the top 10 in 7 seasons now this 2012 season and we haven’t beat any SEC team who put up a winning SEC Record starting with the Kentucky game in 2007 six seasons ago now this 2012 season.
Missouri is a sorry football team, ranked # 42 pre-season who ended up 2011 one of the top 48 teams like Auburn and Georgie tek, lost most of their team, has no special teams, no passing game, and no defense.
If we put up 11-3 with this schedule of 1 opponent who made any top 25 and all the other opponents averaging 4.8 wins, there is no way this team will be considered great.
And, if you think 3.41 average recruits will beat the top 10 teams better than 3-13 with the average 3.65 average recruits they are replacing, you need to put down the jack and go to bed. That ain’t cool.

I see, too, you duck not only possession of an open container, bragged about on the Internet; but also the unsavory pic wearing glasses on every possible front, and you duck the Tweet pre-game that he’s headed to the Dome to kick some butt; and then, of course, there is the little stunt he pulled putting his name in the hat for the NFL draft to see what they would tell him, to be told by Mel Kiper that son, when the game is on the line, and you get the football back, who do you think of against the great teams the world watching you on the stage.
Then, there is this :
_____________________________________________________________________________
by ecdawg 18 May 2011 “The odds on an Aaron Murray bet to win the 2011 Heisman Trophy are +4000. As I understand it, if I’m wrong – correct me, those odds mean that $100 bet on Murray will pay $4000 (and multiples thereof) if he wins. Got a spare $100? Aaron could make some money for you.”
_____________________________________________________________________________
Instead, he continued his winless streak, heebie-jeebies of 0-9 vs any team making any top 25 poll, while in 27 starts needing to go 13-1 both 2012 and 2013 to just tie David Greene’s Win Record, while he actually put up these numbers : 23 fumbles in 27 starts, 22 interceptions in 27 starts, 7 carries a game all 27 starts for 1 yards per carry average, and finished the season # 72 nationally in completion percentage WITH Malcolm Mitchell.
Mark Richt SEC Media days, if he was still with Georgia he certainly would be competing to be starter, if not being the starter. Leaving in our “little peanut,” not Zach Mettenberger Mark Richt, so that he could throw 5 touchdown passes against Louisiana Lafayette while continuing his streak of 11 games to-date finding the OTHER quarterback head-to-head that day, far better.

POSITIVES :
(none of which are made up lies to prop-up a coaching staff Mark Richt hired)
1. Keith Marshall – SEC Freshman of the Year & Team Captain
2. Jarvis Jones – most celebrated linebacker in our 120-year storied history
3. Senior Defense – all of whom are gone for Alabama 2013
4. Schedule 1 team made any top 25 and 11 opponents avg 4.8 wins
5. We haven’t beat up any girls in at least a month
6. We didn’t call police on 3 stealing over $ 500 cash & other valuables
7. Or, we would have the run-away Fulmer Cup lead again
8. We haven’t lost to any Top 10 team 2012 yet
9. We may not even play one, until SEC Championship Game
10. Mark Richt finally got his extension I called for November
11. November day we got Keith Marshall commitment

Jeff Schultz said himself that arrests go on everywhere in the very article your hero replied to at 8:53 am this morning, so his statement then that : “The arrest record at UGA is not particularly out of line with the arrest record of players at other, large university football programs.” just is a lot of Excuses for what the real story Jeff Schultz writes about today – a point which even kingdaddy says before his drunken stupor he brags about doing daily in here sent him to bed early, is a going to be a serious problem if we lose any more signed scholarship recruits when we only have 68 of them left and one transfer-in already 16 short of 85-man limit. This poster has never had a significant post on this blog, ever; and, this one at 8:53 am this morning certainly doesn’t change that, does it ?
The UGA problem as detailed by Jeff Schultz to which he and you write, is that we have so many gone from the team, just when in our best chance 2012 with the soft schedule according to all at SEC Media Days ending yesterday.
If we had Discipline – personal accountability – instead of strict punishment, we would all be pulling in the same direction. Instead, all Mark Richt has said to-date about all the bad press Aaron Murray has brought this program is that well he doesn’t value the football 23 fumbles 22 interceptions, that he holds the ball too long 56 sacks (and I add 1 yards a carry 7 carries a game) in 27 starts beating none of the top teams Aaron Murray himself describes as well no I guess there isn’t a marquee win. While the entire team notices the favoritism of leaving him in vs Louisiana Lafayette until he throws 5 touchdown passes; and now this gem from Mark Richt just last night if Zach Mettenberger were still on The Georgia Team, he certainly would be competing for the starter at QB, if not actually being the Starter at QB for UGA today.
Then, there is you telling us how great Mark Richt is because he has a winning record over Florida you say, a winning record over LSU you say and winning record over Nick Saban you say – while you point out your own bloody self that Mark Richt may not be The Best Coach in The SEC getting his wins over a 4-win Alabama and another Alabama squad who the very same year lost to Louisiana Monroe.
Beating up on the sisters of the poor, is not what made me into the diehard Bulldogs’ Football fan I am. You ? Yeah, sure. As long as Christian Mark Richt and his “coaching staff” can be propped-up for going into our best chance 2012 with this favorable schedule 16 players under the 85-man limit – like that will hold up for 14 games. No, it will not as was told to you DISNEYdawgs.com that it will.
I still want us to beat a team who makes the Top 10.
I am holding out for that, and for you to quit telling lies and answer a question since you make me do so, and that is what do you see as areas we can improve upon ?
Or, even better yet, what is so bloody great about our current status other than starting # 6 in the nation with the softest schedule of any SEC team for the 2nd year in a row now, and having Mark Richt finally signed to his extension after signing Keith Marshall and getting Jarvis Jones and the entire senior defense back 2012 ?
That’s all lovely.
Where is the win over a team who makes the Top 10 ?
Who is the next to make it 67 signed scholarship recruits all we have plus the 1 transfer-in ?
Thomas Brown
July 21st, 2012

10. and
11. not # 3
And, yes Mark Richt deserved an extension as I have stated daily starting November. I think he can fix this on and off field stuff. Certainly, that is Greg McGarity’s job to make sure he does. Just as they both were hired by still here president Mike Adam$, and it is on his watch all this is happening.
I am dawg-tired of this bad press. Dawg-Tired of it.
I am also Dawg-Tired of these spins like we don’t have problems on the field with Discipline and don’t have problems off the field with Discipline. We have a tough standard to punishment, mind you; but that in no way is Discipline.
If a football team has Discipline, they see that they have a favorable schedule – I mean look at 1980. And, they don’t – Mark Richt’s signed scholarship recruits he himself brought in here, find themselves 16 men short of the 85-man limit.
But, that’s where we are, isn’t it ?
It is I who came up with that. Anyone after, took it HERE from me.
I did the research.
I know it off the top of my head.
And, it is I who point out that we’ve not beat any SEC team starting Kentucky 6 seasons ago now in 2007 who put up a winning SEC record. And, I who point out that we’ve not beat any team making the Top 10 since 7 seasons ago when we beat # 9 Auburn in 2006 losing the same year to 2-win Vandie beating only 0-12 Duke and 1-11 Temple.
Yet, daily, all I get are the same old tired Excuses :
1. Everyone else has arrest issues
A: No other team has 68 signed scholarship recruits of 85-man limit
2. Mark Richt is the best coach in The SEC
A: No, # 6
3. Mark Richt was winning record against LSU, Florida, Nick Saban
A: No
4. You’re a better fan than I because you settle for all this
A: Not in a pig’s eye – you’re the problem; I’m the solution
You keep making the same let’s be honest about it stupid statements to which I am steadfast.

It all comes down to mama and daddy, if they would have raised these kids to know right from wrong obay the rules we wouldn’t have these issues. Blameing Richt or UGA for how some kids act and don’t follow the rules is stupid. The kids know the rules and still choose to do it any way. They get what they deserve. You cann’t expect a a coach or a school to be keep taps on every kid to make sure they do whats right. The kid should know at any age what the rules are and not break them. We are all too freakn soft now days letting kids have what they want to make them happy and not punishing them when they need it. If these kids had been raised right and taught to follow the rules and do as they are told. They wouldn’t have this problem at UGA or any school period.

It goes back too kids, if your kid gets in trouble in high school do you blame the teacher? No the kid? Or your self for not teaching right from wrong. Its not the teachers fault, they have them for a small part of the kids life, same as the coach’s. CMR has a life other than the football players, at some point the players have to take care of their self’s. You cann’t blame any one but the player for his or her actions. I mean smoking dope and carrying guns with seral numbers scratched off. Most everyone in this world knows that its wrong and against the law. But they do it any way. Is it the coach’s fault? Can the coach or school keep an eye on these kids 24/7 NOPE!! Can you keep an eye on your kids 24/7? NOPE!! When these kids are in high school all the coaches know is their football stat’s not their personality or if they are trouble makers or smoke dope or run with the wrong crowd.

Mark Richt’s decisions Mis-Management of his roster he recruited here and his decisions on his “coaching staff” are 2 of many areas he needs to learn head coach skills. Vince Dooley could have taught him that. Offensive strategy is another. Pass-happy offense in The SEC is yet another. Face it. He’s young. If you let him move on, and the new contract certainly caters to that – he will go somewhere else and there he clearly will not make these same mistakes on-going with his staff and roster Mis-Management. Rather have him stay here and learn here. You ? You don’t care about UGA football. You barely go to any game ever, if any. All you care about is Mark Richt is Christian.

Richt apologists wish to limit the list when these are the results on the field in the Mark Richt era, head-to-head. Get over it. I am sorry to inform Mark Richt is # 6 coach in win percentage of just SEC coaches head-to-head in the Mark Richt era, isn’t he ?

Brainiac….”In Vietnam we were told that grnades detonate” check your spelling LOL.
OK The detonator ignites the explosive material. I guess it is semantics but I see your point.

I don’t think it has as much to do with the kids you sign as much as the discipline and expectations that are set for them up front. Many are still immature adults with too much energy and that is why they are out at 3 in the morning. It’s just what kids do.
Coaches can’t be friends and get the job done. Being friends implies that I can do stuff and will be forgiven.
Sure there is cover up at other schools, but that does not make it right. do you want them to be good team players and respect their team mates and coaches, or just cover it up. Tough love is what is needed is UGA is ever going to get this under control.
I think bringing back a tougher athletic dorm might work, but it would have to be one that players didn’t want to go to with constant monitoring on class attendance, curfews, study halls, no girls allowed in, etc. If they are going to act like 16 year old’s, then treat them like 16 year old’s with a strict daddy, the meanest coach as their in house resident.
Something is amiss at UGA, and until that is figured out, it will be the same old story continuing ad infintum.

Good Lord. You media types make me want to puke. You cannot have it both ways. You complain if 5-star recruits go elsewhere, even though you probably already know,,,,,as does the UGA coaching staff…. that they would be a poor risk due to character issues or academics. But on the other hand, you also complain when there were no character issues in high school, the recruit gets on campus, and then he screws up and gets booted.
Recruiting is a crapshoot at best. For every David Pollack or Charlie Ward that does things the right way, there’s a Greg Reid or a Crowell that can’t behave.
