HOOVER, Ala. — Made it to SEC media days, the biggest-dumbest annual event of the college football season, if we assume July is college football season, and it must be because here’s another chance to make Nick Saban jokes.
Today’s schedule includes news conferences with newbies Texas A&M and Missouri, who probably feel like those astronauts in “Planet of the Apes” when they crash-landed on a planet and didn’t realize they had just passed through a time warp and they’re really still on Earth (sort of). Also on stage today is South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier (who’s generally well-equipped with talking points and this time won’t have to defend how Stephen Garcia is just misunderstood) and Vanderbilt’s James Franklin.
Also, SEC commissioner Mike Slive will have his State of the Empire address.
I’ve done a full Digi-Blog on SEC media days in the past. Here’s a link from the 2009 SEC Media Daze. But here are a few shots from this morning.
This is the main media work room, where writers update their Facebook status and book remaining vacation plans during the Ole Miss news conference.

Over 1,000 media credentials were issued. Most will leave after reading the no loitering mandate.
•
This is Sports Blab Row. Many of the hosts are off the air right now, splitting the atom.
•
Every media person was given a gift box. Unfortunately, it contained only media guides. When the last tree is gone from this planet, just remember: It’s all because of SEC media days.
•
Here’s your Week 1 match-up between Missouri and Georgia. Go ahead, say it Dog fans: “Mine’s bigger than yours.”
•
I see the buffet hasn’t changed. Ah, Golden Flake — the tools for any Pulitzer, baby.
•
This bird has been circling for hours, looking for Bobby Petrino’s head. Where’d he go?
•

Really? This is the best you could come up with, and you are getting paid for it? I am here as well, at your so called media daze, and am seeing a completely different event than you. While you were bitching about your Golden Flakes I was chowing down on the BBQ lunch. At least they didn’t give media guides out to every single person this year. Maybe it is time for someone else to cover this event. Yes, the stork statue is stupid, I laugh at it everytime I walk in from the Galleria, but you are talking about the conference with the last 50 national championships under their belt and a commisioner that is able to habe a huge say in the new playoff system and all you can do it make fun of the whole event? You are obviously bored with it and should give up the free room at the Winfrey to someone else. Or are you staying at the Embassy Suites? But then it is easier to make fun than to actually report. And I thouht the only thing crappy about getting old was not being able to sleep throught the night without having to get up and pee. Now I realize it is turning into an old cynical journalist like you.
