VIDEO: Talking about Hawks, Danny Ferry, Joe and Josh

I chatted with Cinesport’s Noah Coslov on the Hawks’ hiring of Danny Ferry as their new general manager and the contract situations of Joe Johnson and Josh Smith.

Just one question: Does this video make me look bald?

Yep, it almost DOES make you look bald hahaha. Almost! Maybe casts you in the ‘grandpa’ light a bit?

As for Josh Smith…agree, he need to be dealt. I’m very intrigued to see what Ferry does in regards to Joe Johnson, if he can work that situation at all.

Jeff you were better than the host. Didn’t know Josh Smith was a “box office draw”, but I haven’t watched the Hawks in 20 years. I like the Ferry hire and hope for a brighter future for the Hawks.

Nice interview…those are the immediate concerns for Danny Ferry. It sounds like ASG will pull an Arthur Blank and allow their basketball people to work but we’ll see. I agree that J Smoove needs to be traded and Horford put at the 4 if Smoove wants out. We may have to eat JJ’s contract for the next few years and maybe eat a good portion if he’s traded….I was wondering what do you think about putting JJ at the 3 and bringing in a solid 2 guard that can/will penetrate the lane? With Smoove’s contract coming off the books and potentially amnestying Marvin, I would think there could be some maneuvering available but whether or not any free agents want to come here remains to be seen.

Not trading Smith last year was a blessing as Josh emerged as the Hawks MVP. He will never have as much trade value as right now. Move him and move him now to the highest bidder, whatever that bid is.

Jeff, you are good on video. You should be on “Around the Horn”. Like the video stuff. Great job.

Yes, you do look bald–but its a “good” bald.

Moving Joe Johnson’s cntract now would be difficult, if not impossible. Trading Josh Smith now is the right move.

I’d be curious to get your thooughts on this trade.

Josh Smith to Phoenix for Steve Nash (in a sign-and-trade since Nash is a free agent)

Smith goes to a place where he immediately becomes the star of the team and improves his chances of making the All-Star team.

Nash comes to a team where he immediately becomes the on-court leader the team has needed for years.

Thoughts?

Should be able to get a starter and draft pick for Josh Smith. Trade him to the Western Conference though.

One of you guys (reporters) need to nuttt up and ask Joe Johnson does he think he earns his $20 million like LeBron,Kobe,D.Wade,Durant,D.Howard,Garnett,etc. does ? We already know the true answer.

You need to work with DOL on his video skills… great points on dealing with Josh and Joe, but I’m not sure that’s priority number 1. I have a feeling Ferry will help us out more in marketing the team properly and filling the stadium with realistically informed fans. I know it’s been argued in prior articles that it starts with putting a product worth watching on the court, but I think it may start with gaining the trust of the fans that they will see returns in their support. In the past I think we’ve been more disappointed in a lack of direction than we have by the 20 point blow outs. I understand that it will probably take a lot of both though.

Ferry hiring looks good.

Also, building on Bunraku up there – after you ask him about if he earns it, ask if he would be willing to restructure for the good of the team. I think then we will see the real Joe Johnson.

I agree that Josh should have been traded, but honestly you can’t trade him for anything less than a lottery pick and a rotational player. That means you have to get a big if (lottery) and something more sure a rotational player. Thus, I would not be hell bent on trading Josh.

Here is what I think some people are missing. Joe Johnson is not a bad contract to everyone. You must find those teams that he is not such to and look to move him before moving Josh or Al.

You find me a team that doesn’t think Joe’s contract is a bad one & I’ll sell them a bridge I’ve been trying to unload. He was in the top 10 highest paid players in the league this season & gave us 17 ppg, down a point from the 18 ppg he gave us in last year’s playoffs…and his salary incrementally increases over the next 3 years. How is that not a bad contract? His contract will be the ball-&-chain around the neck of this franchise for the next several years. If we hope to move any closer to being a legit contender, that contract makes it pretty much imperative that we trade Josh. If Joe actually played like he’s paid…well, that would have change everything. In fact, we would have made the conference finals. We wouldn’t be the joke of a franchise that we are. Ugh. Anyway, we need the money to get a piece to make up for the scoring we’re paying for & not getting from Joe. We can’t get a player like that by trading the overpaid Marvin Williams. Yeah, he’s the other awful contract that no one wants. The fallout from overpaying Johnson & Williams is that we’re forced to trade a player like Josh. And that sucks.

2012 Hawks closer

The Hawks did a great job…
They were .40 sec away from a 1st rd playoff win…
A missed FT from OT in Game 6…vs EC Finalist…
With injured players, Pachulia, Smith, Horford, McGrady…
It shows the resiliency of the team and coach…

Good players, good coach…
LD patched together a playoff season…
Without the same players each week or game….
This is not a blow-up situation…Hawks are close…

Joe Johnson heavily criticized b/c of his salary…
Joe has a highly valued skill-set…Scorer/Shooter..
20ppg+ scorers warrant top $$$…but he didnt avg. 20ppg???

No, but Smoove’s ascension and JJ’s unselfish style…
Account for JJ’s diminished scoring, but improved team play…
Hawks shortcomings more attributable to role players…
Without JJ, ATL like Cleveland without LBJ…

Al Horford missed the entire regular season in 2012…
Hawks made playoffs, won 2 games w/o him…
Yet, Game 6, he reminded us why we bank on him…

Down the stretch when Hawks/hope were fading…
Al, went on an 8 pt. tear to win the game…
Putting on full display his championship pedigree…
Where lesser men fade, Al rose…

Smoove – the prodigal, native son will be missed…
He’ll stand next to Dr. J as one of the great “what ifs”…
He’ll become an All-star elsewhere…we’ll miss him…
We’ll rout for him from afar, like Deion, Justice, Vick…

Marvin – the enigma, curse of #2 pick…
I can still smell what Marvin is cooking…
6′9, 230, F that can, shoot, defend w/ good IQ…
Can play 3 positions and defend uber players…
LBJ, Kobe, Gay, Melo, Deng, Durant…etc…

Gives you a fighting chance every night…
That has value…and occassionally Game 6…
Too early to give up now…I’ll ride w Marvin…

Where would we be w/o ZaZa Pachulia????
Next to Smoove, no one embodies the Hawks more…
Averaging close to a double-double his Hawk career…
No one has sacrified, fought, bled, grown more than ZaZa…
Everyone talks JJ, Smoove, Marvin…MVP may be ZaZa…

I would do a trade for Joe Johnson and Josh Smith together. Teams would jump at the opportunity to get 2 All stars for one. It eliminates financial responsibility and allows management to seek a player that would help bring back Atlanta.

at Ted Striker…
ha ha, don’t tell him that!

@ Jeff Schultz…
You’re baldheaded player! Now embrace it like James Harden, go ahead and grow your beard out and do a faux hawk like the lead singer of a Flock of Seagulls! That’ll shake up the pressroom!

Good interview. And as for being bald, or looking bald, just remember what Elaine did w/ George’s rug on Seinfeld.
