Mark Richt will need to have a high degree of success to increase his paycheck at Georgia. (AP photo)
Mark Richt won 10 straight games last season, brought Georgia to the SEC championship for the first time in six years and generally allayed fears that the football program was starting to circle the drain.
But he is not going to get a raise, and that pretty much indicates where the bar has been set in Athens.
Richt’s contract extension is still not finalized. It unofficially has been stuck on “almost finished” longer than any document in American history.
The most intriguing part of the new deal won’t be contract length but the amount of Richt’s buyout, which is the best indicator of somebody’s job security. (It’s much easier to fire a coach with a $2 million buyout than a $10 million buyout.) But athletic director Greg McGarity confirmed Thursday that Richt won’t be receiving a raise in the new deal.
Speaking to the UGA’s athletic board at annual meetings in Greensboro, McGarity said Richt’s contract will include increased bonuses for SEC and BCS championships and simliar accomplishments. But the coach’s salary will remain at about $2.8 million.
“We want to reward excellence,” McGarity said, and if you have been paying attention, those words won’t surprise you.
McGarity recently fired gymnastics coach Jay Clark after only three years. Last football season, when many fans were going gaga over the Bulldogs’ 10-game winning streak, McGarity pointed out that the team was benefiting in part from a soft schedule. He was correct. But it nonetheless was surprising and refreshing to hear an administrator be so candid.
A recent story on McGarity by Chip Towers examined how he studied under Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley, who dismissed at least 15 coaches while McGarity was in Gainesville.
Foley was quoted in the piece, saying: “All I know is when Greg and I worked together, one thing that he and I talked about — and I’ve got to think it’s part of his management philosophy — is you don’t necessarily judge a program on where it is today. I think you judge it on where it’s going to be or if it’s as good as it can be. Sometimes you evaluate programs and they may be OK. But there are certain places in the country — and Florida’s one and I think Georgia is one — where being OK isn’t satisfactory to people in leadership roles.”
Georgia has a chance to be pretty good this season and again will benefit from a schedule that will avoid Alabama, LSU and Arkansas. But high expectations means a higher bar for success. The fact Richt won’t be given a raise indicates McGarity believes he still has something to prove.

This is good news.
I’m CMR fan, and believe the program is headed in the right direction. The contract needed to be extended for the good of the program/recruiting. But to have given him a raise based on the performance since the last contract update would have killed McGarity’s credibility on his “reward excellence” philosophy.
I hope CMR’s incentives are substantial, and that he gets to claim everyone of them.

McGarity is dead on. Those who were giddy about the 10 win season were brought to their knees by the whooping LSU put on them (2nd half) in the Championship Game. I like CMR and hope he does well, we need more people like him leading young people, but a raise was not warranted.

If the Dawgs attain the heights of rarified air of the SEC championship, then Richt’s bonuses should reflect those achievements. If the Dawgs play for the National Championship, then his bonuses should reflect that, also.
An extra $2.5 million should fund a bunch mission trips……

I think I’m buying into McGarity’s management philosophy. Being self-employed, the harder I work, the more I’m going to pay myself. Plus, sometimes I set the bar kind of low, because I don’t want all my hard work to be all that hard. And I like the idea of incentives. Mine is, “No work – No pay!” Hence, I work. Hey, if this lawyering thing doesn’t continue to pan out, I could probably be a D1 coach. Or maybe a double naught spy. Beats work.

The offense will be lights out this year, along with even more improvement on D. Couple that with the hunger that the players SHOULD feel, and the SEC should be within reach. FACT: RICHT DID WELL WITH DONNANS PLAYERS DOWNHILL SINCE VAN GORDER LEFT

FACT: TENNESSEE-ALABAMA–LSU—AUBURN–& FLORIDA HAVE BCS TITLES-NOT UGA!
FACT: JOHN CHAVIS AND UGA’S OWN KIRBY SMART “REJECTED” UGA OFFERS AS DC.
FACT: NICK SABAN & ALABAMA ARE KILLING UGA IN RECRUITING IN THEIR OWN STATE.

Im not fully against the APR incentive idea, but what does Richt really do in this regard? I am guessing the academics of the players are monitored by some group of people who tell Richt when someone is slipping. Richt then tells them to straighten up, or makes them run some laps, or whatever. Is that really worth a bonus? If Richt is actually sitting down and helping them with their Housing homework then I could see it, but a head football coach isn’t exactly an academic leader.

Since the HC controls who he offers scholarships, he has a great deal of influence over APR. Giving extra money for a good record on the field and none for a good academic record makes a statement about a university’s priorities.

They will take the minimum classes. Not always take classes in the summer either. If the players are really good they will play as freshman and leave after their Junior year. 5150,
Here are some of the examples, across multiple sports, mind you.
Think the NCAA needs to rethink a few things?
• Football: The compliance office approved the use of mini basketballs during a football winter conditioning workout;
A former assistant football coach had an inadvertent contact or “bump” with a prospective student-athlete;
The program understood the aunt of a prospective student-athlete was his legal guardian and provided food and lodging expenses to her for the official visit;
An assistant coach inadvertently posted on the Facebook wall of a 2013 prospective student-athlete, believing at the time he was using the email inbox function of Facebook.
• Institutional: Two baseball prospective student-athletes arrived on campus for official visits before being placed on the request list;
Athletics financial aid agreements were issued to three prospective student-athletes without being signed by the financial aid director.
• Baseball: A prospective student-athlete in grade 12 registered and showed up for an Ohio State camp for participants in grades 9-11 even though he was told he was not eligible to compete at the camp. A T-shirt was given to the individual to defuse the situation when he got upset that he couldn’t compete;

FACT: harold STOP YELLING.
FACT: UGA fans who love to complain will live to reget it if CMR is pushed out the door. No Georgia coach has performed as well as this guy. You are not likely to find a better coach willing to come to Georgia and compete in the SEC. We could very easily end up like Tennessee & Mississippi State & Arkanasas (possibly Florida) regretting our coaching change. 1 school wins and NC each year, the rest shoot for the best they can do. Georgia is and will be a best they can do school until we get the luck of schedule, the right players at the right time, and a avoid key injuries. There is only one Saban and he is not coming to Georgia. Everyone else is just lucky to hold the crystal trophy. Some other team had to loose, some one and done player showed up, some major team got upset, the voters left another good team out and picked one, etc. There are things Georgia can control other things they can’t. One day it all may click but probably not. Be happy with SEC’s and Sugar Bowls or fire the coach and go back to the days when you were just happy to upset a team rahther than being the team people are trying to beat. Guy wins ten games in the SEC is a good coach. He had LSU, SC, and Michigan St. on the ropes and the players (interceptions, dropped balls, missed field goals, and missed coverage) gave those away. Too many points left on the field. The comback against Florida was impressive considering the history. The performance against Auburn was perfect. Tech, Kentucky, and Vandy sure don’t like Richt. Bosie cleaned our clock. It was a young team that needed time. CMR did a great job last year. I only hope he is around to keep the momentum going. Or we could hire D. Dooley.

Make CMR earn the high salary by winning the SEC and big bucks w/the BCS Title. He may give more thought to possible coaching changes if ST still reek and the O continues to shoot itself in the foot in big games. If these other coaches can win NC’s he ought to be able to as well.

Desert Fox, What coaches? You mean Saban(3), Myer(2)? Les got his because the system voted him in over Georgia (we were better). Auburn got one because they had two of the best players in Football and then collapsed as soon as they left, not because of coaching. Gene did not make the comeback and beat Georgia, it was the quarterback who managed I don’t even know how many third and longs with his own feet on broken plays to get back in that game. Coaching had nothing to do with it. That was talent. You see him in the NFL and realize they had Superman on offense and the Hulk on defense. Saban and Myer are wto of the best coaches to set foot on a field. Every school wants them. If coaching were really the only answer to the NC issue I assume South Carolina should have one because they have a really good coach as well. Nobody there is screaming for Spurriers head. Some Dawgs just have unreasonable expectations. You want and NC, fine, Hire Saban, Spurrier, or Myer…. Could you imagine any of them pretending to be dawg fans for 5 million a year. No one else is better than the guy leading our team right now. It sure isn’t going to be a current coach in the Big 12, ACC, Big 10 or the PAC. None of them will do any better. Most would be overwhelmed by this conference. I promise, when Richt does leave we will look very similar to Tennessee right, much like the Dawgs of the late 80s and through the 90s. Loosing a hell of a lot more games and praying. It might not seem like much but beating Tech evey year sure feels good. I can remember when that didn’t happen. Richt will get us back over SC. Florida will always be Florida. Life has been pretty good under CMR. You really should not take it for granted. Talk to an Ole Miss or Mississippi State or Tennessee fan and ask them how much fun it is to watch college football.

Smart move by McGarity….2012 will be big in win numbers, but will not impress anyone due to schedule. To make 2012 a success, Mark needs to win 11 games in regular season. He’ll be allowed one mulligan. He loses to Mizzoui and SC and Florida with this team, and it will not bode well for him with this team coming back. It’ll put the light on coaching vs talent, and 2012 is important because 2013 is setting up to be a train wreck with the entire defense leaving and a tougher schedule. There is a ton of young talent coming into to Athens……….But when hasn’t that been the case.

Coach Richt seemed satisfied with the contract when it was first announced. He obviously believes that a pay increase should be tied to the championships as well. This indicates how level headed he is. Petrino would have jumped ship…again… if he was held to that standard.
How quickly we forget that Les Miles was on the hot seat heading into last season. The word was “if he doesn’t get it done with this group he’s gone”. It was good enough apparently to be SEC champs and make it to the BCS championship. But you have to think a similar outcome might not be enough to save him in Baton Rouge. Coach Richt will probably have to make it back to the SEC championship game and/or win it to keep his job. That being said, winning the SEC is almost a sure ticket to the BCS championship. So I am sure that CMR thinks he can achieve this with these players. We’ll see but the performance incentives have to be a positive as well.

Instead of a buyout clause, Richt’s contract should have a payback clause so that he will returned all unearned income he received to the University of Georgia. The “unearned” amount would be based on his win/loss record, number of jailed players, number of players quitting the team, percentage graduating, etc.
Otherwise, Preacha Man will continue his laissez faire is everywhere approach to SEC football indefinitely. He probably isn’t capable of coaching at SEC championship level except maybe one year every ten or so…

One HC who regularly gets a bonus for the academic performance of his team is some guy named Nick Saban. Richt is also eligible for one but I don’t know whether he hits the number or not.

Mark Richt is going to be paid ( not earned ) over 9M under the current contract through 2013. McGarity thinks he is going to show power with the BS he is playing regarding Mark Richt. HINT to McGarity, your putting your job on the line, handling this situation totally wrong and unprofessionally. Some funny crap, a new coach would cost UGA 20M over 5 year contract and although I am not a Mark Richt fan, remaining professional and being realistic is important, McGarity you are way off base on this one. Todd Grantham still has not signed either, gone after 2012.
McGarity, to date has been very disappointing and pretty much a failure.

I’m hoping for 12-0 and at least being competitive in the SECCG, but I feel like it will be 9-3. CMR is a good man and I respect him, but in coaching he is stubborn and doesn’t learn from his mistakes. The Dawgs won’t commit to being physical on O, because CMR STILL doesn’t believe it helps you win.

only played 4 ranked teams last year and lost all of them. this, I have to imagine, is what mcgarity has imbedded in his mind….rightfully so. and before that a loss to central FL in the bowl game. If he were evaluated on the Rivals rankings in February he’d be making more than saban and meyer combined.

A title using name of Richt and yet McGarity makes the article about himself:
McGarity should be fired immediately and a Business Professional be hired:
At no time did McGarity mention what the mission statement is, what is required of Mark Richt and his job requirements and what the future holds if he does not achieve these goals and objectives.
Idle threats and gray matter talk does nothing but cloudy the issue more, at no point has McGarity stated what the Mission Statement and Goals for Richt are: Oh wait a minute, he fired a girl volleyball coach and a girls softball coach to put pressure on Richt, everyone is laughing their ass off at such child play.
McGarity, either you go on record with what is totally expect in stone of the UGA football program and Mark Richt, on and off the field, or you will find yourself with a pink slip at the end 2013.

Totally agree with what McGarity is doing. Last years record was smoke and mirrors. Didn’t beat a single team in the Top 25. I think we’ll be pretty good this year but it’s clear that management is taking a wait and see approach, much like a lot of the fanbase.

Great article Jeff.
10-2 looks like a great year but when you avoid the 3 behemoths of the west and your 2 traditional foes in the east UF and UT are at there lowest ebbs in decades its really not very impressive.
Add in a loss to a middling Big 10 team like Michigan State that got blasted by Bama 49-7 in the same bowl a year earlier and the season actually looks pretty unimpressive.

UGA hasn’t had a quality win since 2009, going 0-9 since against teams that finish the season ranked in the top 25. Throw in 2 consecutive bowl embarassments for good measure. I have to wonder if McGarity simply thinks “good enough” is truly good enough?

The bowl game against Mich St was a bad loss for the Georgia program. A win would have given the Dawgs 11 wins and momentum for 2012. Unfortunately the 10 win streak doesn’t look so great sandwiched in between 2 losses to the best 4 teams on the schedule.
I think McGarity did what he had to do. Really with the schedule Georgia has, I don’t think any Dawg fan is being unreasonable to expect to go 12-0. However, the OL is an issue which may be the difference in beating USCe. Florida, Auburn, Missouri and UT aren’t sure wins either at this point.

Get a good o-line that is SEC caliber, and all else will take care of itself. Defense will be good, and we have skill players….but our whoppin’s (all of them) last year came due to our o-line gettin’ their butts handed to them by Boise State, Michigan State, and LSU. We got stacked up front….period. Murray was running for his life and even though our backs could have played better, our run blocking (x-cept when we played bad teams) was awful. Often times they caused our defense to be on the field too long. We’ll get better, but we can harp on any and everything and until that line is up to snuff we are BEHIND Alabama and LSU…period. Incentives, no incentives, etc. Get a 1st rate o-line, and watch all the coaches (magically) earn their bonuses!!

Dog fans should all be proud of our coach – one of the few concerned with the overall education of his student athletes.
What utter tripe. 90% of Richt’s recruits are illiterate “special admits” who will spend 3-4 years stumbling through remedial studies and still won’t be able to read.
Ther’s a reason UGA is known far and wide as The Cesspool of the South.

GT’s CPJ will be the poster boy for all of the football magazine covers in this part of the USA. His face will be there with the caption HOT SEAT in Atlanta.
The problem though, is that beyond Dekalb/Fulton County and metro Atlanta, no one has ever heard of the guy, because his record has NO ACCOMPLISMENTS.
ESPN will soon do their preview of the 2012 football season upcoming and they will probaly do 10 minutes on Why Coach Pual Johnson IS on the coaching HOT SEAT and how that likely IS HURTING Tech’s recruiting.
The next GT football coach will inherit wishbone kids and likely, he will employ the spread attack or a pro attack and it will take him 2 or 3 years to purge GT of the triple option kids (chop blockers) and get his type of kids …………….then he too WILL BE on the Coaching Hot Seat carousel. Sad.

Things are out of whack, when this thinking becomes the norm.

Jeff — good article. Richt doesn’t deserve a pay raise into the upper echelon of coaches as that area is maintained by coaches who win NCs. BTW, do you know what the buy-out is on Richt’s new contract? In fact, if you know the current buy-out it’d be interesting to know.

It is true about Ga, it’s ok to be ok. McGarity has no love for CMR, but he has no other choice.
He can get away with firing the gym coach, but CMR is untoucheable and what is sad, is CMR knows it
