Jonathan Vilma tries to tackle me on Twitter (missed)
Just because Jonathan Vilma can fly doesn't mean can get away with everything.
It’s not pretty when a person becomes so desperate and is caught up in denial that he turns delusional. That appears to be the case with New Orleans linebacker Jonathan Vilma.
Earlier today, I sent out a link to ex-Saint Anthony Hargrove’s declaration to the NFL that he was told to lie by assistant coach Gregg Williams and Joe Vitt in 2010 about the existence of the team’s “bounty” program.
That three page declaration, obtained by Yahoo, is listed below. It clearly illustrates the dishonesty and coverup in the Saints’ organization about the program, and as we’ve learned lies and coverups can lead to greater penalties that the crimes themselves might have resulted in.
Anyway, the one thing I didn’t expect to happen was that Vilma and I would get into a back-and-forth on Twitter. Vilma has been suspended for the entire 2012 season. He and NFLPA consider this NFL investigation a bunch of hooey. I’ve weighed on that here.
Meanwhile, back to the Twitter debate . . .

My role here is not to try to make sense of Vilma’s response, but merely to mock.
Hargrove, who now plays for Green Bay, was suspended for eight games. He admits to lying to the NFL back in 2010 when asked about the program the first time and recently came clean.
Here are two excerpts from Hargrove’s declaration that I find particularly interesting:
• Coach Vitt also told me that I should deny the existence of any bounty or bounty program, and he told me to remember that he was the person who “brought [me] into the League and brought [me] to the Saints.”
• The meeting lasted approximately 30 minutes, and during that time both Coach Williams and Coach Vitt told me that I should deny the existence of any bounty or bounty program to the NFL. Williams and Vitt repeatedly stated that they “care about me and … if we all stay on the same page about this, it will blow over.” They told me that when the NFL asked me about any bounty or bounty program, I should “just play dumb.”
The meeting was held on or before Feb. 24, 2010. Hargrove’s declaration was signed and dated April 13, 2012.
I’ll let you know if there are any updates on this Twitter debate.
But I can’t promise anything. Unlike Vilma, I actually have a job next season.

Jeff you are a real idiot. You try to prove your point, by not proving your point. You posted an affidavit of Hargroves to prove your stupid point. But the affidavit does not prove your point. Hargroves only admits denying the existence of a bounty program. Nowhere in his statements does Hargrove acknowledge the existence of a bounty program. Moreover, he was told to “play dumb” not to “lie” as you moronically pointed out. Playing dumb about allegations which are not proven is not the same thing as lying. Not only did you not prove a lie, but you put words into someone else’s mouth, even though you posted an affidavit of what that mouth said. Jeff, are you an idiot? And should be making sense of what you are saying? Or mocking you?

Something is missing in this document. Oh yes this “The Saints had a bounty program which I participated in and was told to lie about.” The document only says what he was told to say when questioned, he never states for a fact a bounty program existed. As long as the commish can stay out of court, he is ok. If he has to provide this type of documentation in court, it gets ripped to shreds. You can assume bounty program, but this is not actual 100% proof, just like you could assume the glove belonged to O.J. but not 100% proof.

I’m not sure what there is left to debate for Mr. Vilma. He’s been suspended for a year. In what lifetime does he and the NFLPA expect that it might be reduced? Have they met Roger Goodell? The man has conviction.
It is very instructive in Vilma’s tweets that he makes a comment that Hargrove “denied the existence of a bounty program”. He doesn’t say “I’ve done nothing wrong.” That tells me what I need to know. Innocent people lead off with professing their innocence, then they’ll profess their innocence and finally they profess their innocence. They never try to make a nuanced argument about a technicality.

There is no reason to trash an entire city because their professional football franchise got caught cheating and then lying about their cheating. I have to say whether it is fair or not, most football fans outside of the Saint’s fan base don’t think their Super Bowl win counts. I visit lots of football message boards and the overwhelming majority of posters think New Orleans did not win the super bowl. At least people in your state think you won it though so that is something.

Thank goodness for the Falcons. Apparentley we have nothing else going for us other than a Super Bowl title we couldn’t defend. We get bounced from the playoffs every year even against teams with a losing record. Even with all those points we can score, we just can’t score enough. I guess as long as we can score more than 2 pts and beat the Falcons and occasionly win a playoff game….. then we are the best! Even though we get bounced from the playoffs every year too.

I may be alone, but this Saint’s fan does not think we deserve to be called Super Bowl Champions. I am ashamed that so many of my fellow citizens of New Orleans claim something that we cheated to get. I work hard at my job and don’t take charity and I wish I could say the same for more of my neighbors.
As much as it pains me to say it, way too many people here do use the Katrina disaster as a means to get sympathy and charity. Believe me people like seen thisb4 and all the who dats are not true representatives of my city. I truly believe they are probably just band wagon fans anyway.

It’s funny you brought up living in basements. My aunt actually hosted some katrina victims in her basement after the tragedy despite her sons complaints. The trash that took advantage of her pity ran up her phone bill into the thousands of dollars, they trashed her basement and stole all the electronics they could get their hands on before she finally had to call the cops and have them removed. What you failed to mention Jeff is that Williams also said that the NFL had been after him for years and he had done this at multiple other stops along the way of his 20+ yrs in the NFL, but the Saints were the only team he coached for to be punished. Kinda difficult to say the Saints AREN’T being singled out at this point when the NFL has Williams stating the obvious (he didn’t invent a bounty program in New Orleans, merely did what he has always done).

Before everyone starts accusing everyone else, I just want to clarify one fact. While bountygate may be true and very deplorable, I do not understand why everyone counts the Saint’s win in the superbowl as tainted. A $10,000 bounty might make me want to hit someone harder, but you have to remember that the purported players are making 50x greater than that in their salary. And what are their salaries based off of one may ask? Making more sacks, getting to the QB faster, being able to hit harder… paying for performance. Just because it may be outside the scope of legal tender from salaries doesn’t make the Saints any less of a winner. I guarantee you the Vikings/Colts were trying their best to take Brees out of the game too regardless of having more monetary incentive. Once again just trying to show some perspective.

I’m about as anti NO as you can get. But the simple fact of the matter is that nowhere in that sworn statement is there an admission that a bounty program actually existed. Think of it like this, if your boss sets you down tomorrow and tells you that the CEO is coming to question you about the existence of Santa Claus and you are to “stick with the program” and deny all knowledge of Santa’s existence, does that mean Santa is real? Just don’t get all the Falcons obsession with the Saints. If they used a quarter of their energy worrying about their own team instead of the Saints, they might have a chance to improve. I’m starting to think that the Saints might get a better rating share in metro Atlanta than the Falcons do. If Melt doesn’t win a playoff game this year, his days in Atlanta probably will be numbered as will Smith’s. This time next year the Saints will have Payton back, probably get that 2nd round pick back, and will be at full strength while the Falcons may be looking for a new coach and possibly GM too. After all, Dimwit’s only significant move was acquiring an aging Eagle defensive back and the Eagles have a history of knowing when to get rid of a veteran in the secondary. How about Bobby Taylor, Lito Sheppard, Brian Dawkins, and Eric Allen just to name a few. Wow, that Falcon roster really improved this offseason……LOL!

Greg, this is why Roger Goodell did not dignify James Harrison with a response to his stupid quotes in “Men’s Journal.” Vilma got caught and lied and is basically going to attack anyone who accuses him of lying. The way to deal with this is to not dignify Vilma with a response. I agree with one of the original posters that you should not get into a verbal touche match with Vilma. He is wrong, you are not. P.S. I used to live in Louisiana and I am a Falcons fan. I saw Saints fans wear bags on their heads because their team was terrible. Their team is a winner now and won a Super Bowl based on what the league has uncovered was an environment of cheating. The NFLPA supporting a team of goons trying to maim and end the careers of other dues-paying members of the NFLPA is why the NFLPA should be disbanded, unless all players sign an agreement that rids them of agents and individual bargaining rights. If they want collective bargaining, so be it, but buyer beware. They are so corrupt that they will support any player having down any crime, just because it looks good. The owners should put some money in a pot and do a bounty on the peopple running the NFLPA and really get into a twitter war.
Boycott the NFL until the players are locally hired, and make scaled union wages, with benefits negotiated. Then Congress can get involved and put in price controls, so Joe Fan can go watch a game live and in person for $2.
Vilma should be banned from ever playing in the NFL again, as should all the rest who took part in putting up money, who said nothing about it, and who won the pots for sending a player out of the game, or on IR. It is worse than the Black Sox scandal. The Saints should be penalized the number of players involved, regardless of how many players suspended now play on other teams. Suspend them too, but tell the Saints not only is Vilma suspended, you cannot replace him on the roster. For those who signs with other teams who are suspended, the Saints will not be able to play that number of players that number of weeks. Make the Saints play with 48 (from 54), or whatever the number is on an active roster. Make the Saints forfiet every game Williams was coaching for them, and if that means taking away a Super Bowl championship, so be it. Let the league hold the tropy as unclaimed, just like USC had to forfeit for having ex-Saint Reggie Bush.

You also haven’t read the Hargrove document with any sort of critical eye and clearly are simply using it to support what you already believe. Hargrove does not say the Saints told him to lie, only that they told him specifically not to say there was a bounty system. Importantly, despite the NFL claiming otherwise, no where in the statement does Hargrove mention that there actually was a bounty program, nor does he say “The Saints asked me to lie.” In fact for all we know the Saints told him to say exactly what he would have said anyway. He certainly doesn’t make any mention that he would have had anything else to say if not for the meeting.
Its amazing to me what the internet has done to “reporting.” You work for a venerable newspaper but your writing sounds like a whiny teenager. “Haha, I got him!” “At least I have a job!”
This is what passes for journalism today, and people eat it up. Its a pretty sad commentary.

What if there was no bounty program, and instead of Hargrove saying he didn’t know, he was told to say there was none? My point is, his declaration WOULD have been explosive if, anywhere, he said there WAS a bounty program that he was told to deny. I understand how you are seeing it, but legally there is no admission of guilt, and even a false denial of something doesn’t indicate of the existence of it. The falsehood could also be his KNOWLEDGE that there was no bounty.
Just like YOU don’t know if there was one or not. But if you make claims that there wasn’t, you’d be lying. But the fact that you’re lying doesn’t mean there WAS a bounty, it simply means you were lying about KNOWING there was no bounty.

This is so overblown… Tony gives a statement about hiding a bounty program yet give no details about money exchanged, players involved, whether is was a performance program or was it a program to initially try to hurt a player such as Brett Favre which is the way the media has played it out to be. So because of this Decleration that proves absolutely nothing the Saints are fined, lose draft picks a head coach and players. Where it the real evidence ? Your article is reaching yet proves one thing… there is no clear cut evidence.

Please explain how a bounty program (if it did indeed exist is cheating). All they did was offer an extra incentive to hit the opposing players harder. Does that increase the risk of injury, yes it does, but how in the hell is it cheating. The Saints held no unfair advantage over their opponents they just had a little extra motivation to play harder and hit harder. Not saying the bounty program was right but it definetly was not cheating.

Brent, not that anything will convince you, but watch some of the lowlights of the Saints defensive players delivering cheap shots to Warner and Favre in the bounty playoff games. It was a joke. A defender got a personal foul penalty early in the game for crushing Favre into the turf after a HANDOFF to a running back.
Anybody who thinks what the Saints were doing is part of how football is supposed to be played is an unmitigated moron. How about if an opposing coach said “Hit Brees low and blow out his knee, I don’t care if it’s 5 seconds after the play and he’s looking the other way.” Would you morons be OK with that?

DP, I am far from being a moron and if you think those hits are vicious watch some of the all time greats. It was a playoff game and even Warner and Favre said they weren’t mad and didn’t feel any different of the way the game was played. Two older NFL quarterbacks took some shots in a playoff game, really? Is that something new. They may have hit them hard or late even but penalties were called where the NFL’s referees deemed necessary, but still how is it cheating? The Saint’s had no unfair advantage in either one of those games. So don’t talk to me about that is not how the game is supposed to be played. The game is all about the biggest and fastest men in our society making big plays and big hits. If there was a bounty program I am not saying it was right but even if it was done it is still not CHEATING.

I am an educated adult male who doesn’t believe in Stereotyping, but in my entire life, I have met 2 Saints fans who didn’t come across as blatantly ignorant, smack-talking, sandy vaginas. That’s 2 total, and I’m in the GA dome for every home game, and I’ve been to a Falcons-Saints game in the SuperDome.
They are every bit as rude in our stadium as they are in theirs. No class whatsoever, and being proud of an ignorant and childish mantra of “Who Dat” pretty much sums up exactly what I am talking about.
I have one point: No woman has ever claimed to be raped in the GA Dome, but there are dozens of women who were raped in the SuperDome during Katrina.
Way to show your true New Orleans, what a fine city you are. The Saints culture lacks the same intelligence as the decision to build a city below sea level.
