Jonathan Vilma tries to tackle me on Twitter (missed)

Just because Jonathan Vilma can fly doesn't mean can get away with everything.

Just because Jonathan Vilma can fly doesn't mean can get away with everything.

It’s not pretty when a person becomes so desperate and is caught up in denial that he turns delusional. That appears to be the case with New Orleans linebacker Jonathan Vilma.

Earlier today, I sent out a link to ex-Saint Anthony Hargrove’s declaration to the NFL that he was told to lie by assistant coach Gregg Williams and Joe Vitt in 2010 about the existence of the team’s “bounty” program.

That three page declaration, obtained by Yahoo, is listed below. It clearly illustrates the dishonesty and coverup in the Saints’ organization about the program, and as we’ve learned lies and coverups can lead to greater penalties that the crimes themselves might have resulted in.

Anyway, the one thing I didn’t expect to happen was that Vilma and I would get into a back-and-forth on Twitter. Vilma has been suspended for the entire 2012 season. He and NFLPA consider this NFL investigation a bunch of hooey. I’ve weighed on that here.

Meanwhile, back to the Twitter debate . . .

Poking Tweet from @JeffSchultzAJC: Hey NFLPA and @JonVilma51, check this out (via Yahoo): http://yhoo.it/ISiYn0

Response from @JonVilma51: he denied the existence of a bounty program…wats ur point. Nowhere does it say there was a bounty program. Ur reaching.

Me again (imagine flabbergasted look): It says he was told to lie by coaches. Why would he be told to lie about program that didn’t exist? Can’t wait for your answer.

Reader @Clete27 is among those who chimes in: Rea@JeffSchultzAJC @JonVilma51 If it didn’t exist, why was he instructed (repeatedly) to deny its existence?

Vilma responds again: @Clete27 @jeffschultzajc I’m sorry if by responding to u, u thot I cared wat u think. U make no decisions in my world Idc wat u think

My role here is not to try to make sense of Vilma’s response, but merely to mock.

Hargrove, who now plays for Green Bay, was suspended for eight games. He admits to lying to the NFL back in 2010 when asked about the program the first time and recently came clean.

Here are two excerpts from Hargrove’s declaration that I find particularly interesting:

Coach Vitt also told me that I should deny the existence of any bounty or bounty program, and he told me to remember that he was the person who “brought [me] into the League and brought [me] to the Saints.”

The meeting lasted approximately 30 minutes, and during that time both Coach Williams and Coach Vitt told me that I should deny the existence of any bounty or bounty program to the NFL. Williams and Vitt repeatedly stated that they “care about me and … if we all stay on the same page about this, it will blow over.” They told me that when the NFL asked me about any bounty or bounty program, I should “just play dumb.”

The meeting was held on or before Feb. 24, 2010. Hargrove’s declaration was signed and dated April 13, 2012.

I’ll let you know if there are any updates on this Twitter debate.

But I can’t promise anything. Unlike Vilma, I actually have a job next season.

For all of you Falcant fans…we may be without Vilma next season, but we signed another free agent who by the way plays the same position. In fact the team he came from he was their leading tackler for 4 straight years. He wanted to come to a proven winner…his words exactly….you may have heard of him…his name is Chris Lofton!!! Sound familiar Falcants fans? Lol! And he signed after all of this so called bounty crap broke!

Jeff,

Your entire column is the height of intellectual laziness. Hargrove’s declaration is inserted as the bulk of your retort to Vilma? Delusional…..be careful how you throw that term around, you are teetering on the edge of journalistic/editorial lunacy.

Where in this letter do you read there was a bounty program ?
Yes, Hargrove was asked to say that there was no such program, but he nowhere said “I Lied” nor “There really was a bounty program”. Goddell jumped too the conclusion by himself. When one wants to get rid of his dog, is said to have rabies

I don’t say there wasn’t a bounty program but to admit it I need a real proof, not a letter from a player admitting he answered questions a certain way too protect coaches. It’s like this famous rhetorical demo :
rare things are expensives
A one-eyed horse is rare
So a one-eyed horse is expensive…

So a disgruntled ex-employee says that the people who essentially fired him were up to no good, without having any proof….seems legit.

FailCan’t fans no room to talk. VICK took your franchise down But unlike the Failcan’ts,the Saints will be alright this upcoming football season. we still have pretty much the same offense, new defensive members and a new DC.

Excuse me if I already forgot your name, OP. But engaging in a battle of wits with a football player is similar to beating some exchange students in a spelling bee. They might be “college graduates” but its clear to anyone who doesn’t read your blog (I’m very surprised you haven’t made it big time – you might just be the first to win a pulitzer for verbally belittling an African American on twitter!) that you are in fact reaching. You and everyone else know what that statement says. But any lawyer you ask will say that declaration IN NO WAY provides evidenciary support to real guilt. It is only implied and implied is worth approximately the recycled copy paper your blog is NOT printed on.
