Spurrier says only SEC division games should count (really?)

Let me preface this by saying that I actually like Steve Spurrier. He is a great coach, he changed the SEC with what he accomplished at Florida and he doesn’t cheat (although “suspending” former quarterback Stephen Garcia five times without forcing him to actually miss a game certainly set new standards for enabling and being disingenuous).

But Spurrier’s latest idea is beyond looney.

The South Carolina coach is about to make a wonderful self-serving proposal. He believes the SEC’s division champions — the participants in the conference championship game — should be determined not by the teams’ conference records but by just results within the division.

I’m sure the fact that the Gamecocks will play SEC West teams LSU and Arkansas in 2012 while Georgia plays only Auburn and Mississippi has nothing to do with this brainstorm.

It’s shocking, really, that Spurrier didn’t come up with this idea in 2008, when Georgia played Alabama and South Carolina played Mississippi.

Wait a minute . . .

Spurrier apparently will make this pitch at the SEC spring meetings in Destin, according to SI.com.  He spun this as only getting the idea after taking pity on Tennessee and Florida last year.

“Last year, it wasn’t fair for Tennessee and Florida,” he told SI.com. “They both played LSU and Alabama. Us and Georgia didn’t. So, us or Georgia almost had to win the division simply because of the schedule.”

It’s not a completely baseless argument. Every SEC team doesn’t play each other. Therefore, there are going to be inequities every year.

The problem is that no other sport at any other level determines division standings by division-only results. (Division records comes into play in tiebreaker scenarios.) Further, even if such a rule was adopted, it wouldn’t prevent other inequities. For example, how do you weigh the fact that Georgia’s first SEC game in 2012 is at Missouri and is the Tigers’ first conference game (which will be kind of hyped), while South Carolina gets Missouri two weeks later at home (and following games against East Carolina and Alabama-Birmingham).

Also, I suspect that if a scheduling glitch after conference expansion hadn’t knocked Alabama off of Georgia’s schedule, Spurrier might not be making this pitch. Just saying.

So basically Steve is saying a team could go 4-4 in conference and win the East over say a team that goes 7-1 in conference but loses one eastern game. Oh yeah, that will work.

Doesn’t cheat??? Come on now. SO I guess the NCAA is investigating because he is such a good guy? Please. No one wants to be a Cock unless you paid them. He was almost fired until they started cutting checks. Don’t even go there man. I almost fell out my chair laughing.

Oops, I was thinking something different. So a team could go 6-2 and win the eastern conference over a team that goes 7-1. As long as the 6-2 teams wins all eastern division games, and loses to both other teams. Really though, if SC beats a mediocre Auburn team at home last season, we would not even be having this conversation.

The Fact that UGA has been given two(2) free passes( collect an invite to the SEC Championship Game) without playing the BIG BOYS is probably too much for most SEC fans who saw the realization that the 5th or 6th best team in the conference represented the East in last years game. The funny part is that UGA will once again get the FREE PASS!

And UGA fans just whine and whine when everyone around them league calls them out for playing the weakest SEC schedule once again all the while losing player after player get suspended for playing games with Betty Crocker.

Great point James Stephenson. Spurrier is a politician at heart. Only cares about rules and regulations if they benefit him, therefore he agrees with them. If he doesn’t agree with them, they don’t benefit him.

Steve Spurrier should get one of those big banners like they have for retired jerseys at various stadiums( the ones with the jersey number and name on them) and when UGA makes their trip this fall to Columbia have all the UGA players jerseys on it who has been suspended since last year game with UGA in Athens. It may take up 30 or so yards on the stadium wall with all the players on it.

Lots of whining going on

UGA does not set the conference schedules. Eventually they even out. Cowboy up, and cut out the crying. No more excuses- coulda, woulda, shoulda. That should be above you, Coach Spurrier. One of your goals should be to beat the Dogs this year and finally get to .500 with them at SC. That would make you a legend in Columbia, and would be a notable achievement.

Beat Auburn last year Mrs Stevie and you go to the SEC Championship game. In actuality, did you really want to go to the SEC CG last year. It would have been the same result as UGA.
SPurrier is a great coach, but his statement is absurd! It’s based upon the luck of the schedule which the schools have no control over mind you. Couple years back Mrs. Stevie would not have been argueing when UGA played Bama & LSU….oh, wasn’t Oklahoma State on the schedule as well. What a Tool!

Apparently the only way to make the anti-UGA crowd happy is for Georgia to drop Buffalo, Georgia Southern, and Georgia Tech (the three weakest non-conf. games) and schedule Arkansas, Alabama, and LSU all as road non-conference games. The SEC’s conference schedule is rotational. Soon enough Georgia will be playing the “big boys” again.

He wont have to worry about that this year when he gets his tail kicked on Oct. 6. There wont be fumbles, fake punts and INT’s for touchdowns to save him this year.

And Connor Shaw as your QB, well we will see how well he can pass cause we wont let him run.

Talk about a ego maniac – thats Spurrier.

In the same spirit, I think S.C. ought to spot at least one extra win to all Western division teams whenever S.C. doesn’t play both LSU and Alabama. In fact everyone should give up a win if they don’t play Alabama and LSU. In fact, I think the entire NCAA will agree to limit the national championship game to Alabama, LSU and any other team who has beaten both Alabama and LSU.

What the OBC conveniently fergits is his very first SEC East Champs in 1992. He lost to Miss State and Tennessee during the regular season. He avoided playing unbeaten and eventual National Champ Alabama until that first Championship game. Tennessee lost to Alabama, Arkansas and South Carolina. By Steve’s logic, Tennessee’s 4-1 division record should have trumped the Gators’ because of the head to head. And Florida got to avoid Alabama which is the one game difference in records…much like the one game difference last year with the Cocks.

Great minds think alike. That’s what I said last year. SC is 5-0 while UGA is 4-1 last year, but UGA is unfairly the East champ.
