If Hawks lost and avoided Boston, would that be so bad?

After losing at home by 16 points to the lottery-bound Toronto Raptors one night and then body-slamming the very same team by 22 points the next, it’s less certain that the Hawks are a serious playoff threat right now than they are a case study for an abnormal psychology class.

Then again, every team is a little psychotic this season. This is the byproduct of a post-lockout schedule that allows for water breaks roughly every 27 quarters. Even the Chicago Bulls, the league’s best team, just lost at home to the 14-46 Wizards. (The box score now hangs in the Smithsonian, adjacent to a picture of Stonehenge.)

But let’s try to apply a little bit of logic here: The Hawks have clinched a playoff berth. They have five regular-season games remaining. They probably will finish fourth or fifth overall in the Eastern Conference. That would set up a likely first-round match-up against Boston.

If the Hawks play poorly down the stretch, they could tumble below Orlando into sixth place and play No. 3 Indiana, which doesn’t seem nearly as daunting.

So I must ask: Would a late-season skid be so bad?

“Skid” is a much nicer four-letter word than “tank.” But there’s such a shell game going on among the league’s coaches and general managers this season regarding injuries that it’s difficult to know which ailments are truly debilitating and which ones require only “rest” for players until the really important games begin in two weeks.

The Hawks are playing without center Al Horford (who had his first “contact” workout Tuesday since suffering a torn pectoral). They also are without Zaza Pachulia (sprained foot). Coach Larry Drew is somewhat evasive on Pachulia’s future. He said he expects him to miss at least the next two games. But he also said, “He’s day-to-day.”

Could Pachulia play if this were a playoff situation?

“He’d be a game-time decision,” Drew said with a laugh.

I get the sense a lot of players are game-time decisions these days. Orlando’s Dwight Howard is out “indefinitely” with a herniated disc. We’ll find out how hurt he really is when the playoffs begin. It follows that it just doesn’t pay for the Hawks to play Pachulia right now. If they lose most or all of these last five games, it’s really no big deal. It might even be a benefit.

What looks better: A potential home playoff series against Boston or a road playoff series against Indiana? At the very least, it’s close.

There’s blatant tanking, which should never happen, as in Jeff Teague turning to an opponent and saying, “Take my pass — please.”

Then there’s something more subtle: a team not taking any risks with its lineup.

The Hawks are 0-2 against Boston, losing one by three points and the other by two in overtime. They struggled on offense in both games. The Celtics are old, but they’ve reached the finals in two of the past four years (winning one title). Also, there’s something about a veteran team in the postseason.

The Hawks are 2-1 against Indiana. Their offense flows better against the Pacers. Indiana is hot, winning nine of its past 10. But the franchise hasn’t won a playoff series since 2004-05, which was Reggie Miller’s final season.

Predictably, Drew expressed no preference of opponents.

“I don’t think our guys are concerned, no matter who we play,” he said. “We haven’t played our best against Boston, but I don’t know if that’s been about us or them. What I’ve told our guys is Boston did a better job of taking advantage of our mistakes. Veteran teams can do that. But we were in a position where we could’ve won both games.

“I know everybody looks at the season series and says we match up better against Indiana, but I really don’t feel that way. If we have our bodies in the lineup, I like our team no matter who we play.”

He would like it even more with Horford, who went through contact drills Tuesday. Drew said, “It’s probably wishful thinking,” that Horford could play some minutes in a regular-season game. But he also left the door open to that possibility.

“It depends how he feels and he progresses,” he said.

This isn’t the time of year for definite answers, in lineups or results. The settling effect will begin in two weeks.

it would be sweet to retire those beaneaters from Boston once and for all.
and if we lost well it would be not so unexpected.
but if we lost to Indiana then it is blow up the team time.

My goodness, who even cares? The Hawks? Please.

My boycott of this ownership group and everything it touches continues.

Forcing a change in ownership is the only way the wretched Hawks will ever amount to anything….and, then praying the next ‘group’ or whatever is caring and committed.

This organization is such a joke. Wake up, folks–and stop subsidizing incompetence.

Sage of Bluesland, you would seem to be about the only joke around here. The “wretched” Hawks? Uh, no, they’re not really that wretched. Haven’t been in years. They’re actually a pretty darn fun team to watch and follow and discuss, and they just keep on winning and going to the playoffs every year. That’s pretty hard to complain about, so I’m not sure why you seem to be harboring so much hostility. Oh, yeah, I get it now. Bluesland! If you are a hockey fan then why are you even commenting on this board in the first place? As C from Marietta said, go f yourself, or at least go somewhere else. Loser.

umm, this is the worst thing i’ve read in awhile. A. Why the hell would a team tank going into the playoffs??? You risk getting rusty and also damaging your shots. Any athlete knows that to play at your best, you need to peak at the right time. Tanking on purpose when going into the playoffs is DUMB and should not even be mentioned. B. Drawing Boston means much more motivation for this team to play at a higher level and also a chance to avenge the 0708 series. There’s still bad blood btw these teams and i know the fans, like myself, would love to see this series happen again. C. Drawing the Heat/Bulls for the First Round would mean bandwagon fans from those teams filling up this Arena for the playoffs, giving us less of a home advantage. There are enough fans in this city that came to the 0708 playoff series who will mroe than likely come back and cheer on the Hawks instead of the Celtics. The Pacers are HOT right now and also a dangerous team. SERIOUSLY, CRAP article.

Funny also that Sage says this crap but the Hawks are the only consistent team in Atlanta. Hmmm, they must be doing something right.

No tanking please

The goal is to win a championship, not just winning a first round game. Even if the Hawks were to fall to 6 and get Indiana, next up would be the Miami Heat. So–would you rather play LeBron and company just to play Indiana, or would you rather take your chances with Boston and then face a Chicago team with Derrick Rose’s questionable health? Seems like a no-brainer to me.

The Hawks should not try to get out of playing Boston for multiple reasons, not intentionally tanking only being one of those reasons.

Truth must hurt some folks. Oh well, enjoy sub-mediocrity while the same old, same old win, you know, TITLES. The Hawks? Nothing but schedule-fodder for the handful of real teams out there.

The Hawks? Laughable. Always have been; always will be. Best team they’ve had in Atlanta was in the mid- to late-80s…and we saw how that worked out. Not really even that close, either.

Wake up and stop subsidizing the incompetence–as that is all it is….

Sage, I know you’re still bitter about the Thrashers, but that ship was in the same shape as the Titanic! Moving to Manitoba showed that t was a mess when they did another March swoon! From first to out of the playoffs! Wait till they move to the West, you’ll be counting the years before they’ll be more than a afterthought! Man, go find a buyer for the Coyotes and bring ‘em here! Go Hawks!

Who cares about matchups and jockeying….you have to beat the best to be the best. Eventually you will run into either Boston, Chicago or Miami and to advance that’s who you have to beat.

We need this thing Friday night. Yeah, we’re going to the playoffs–win or lose–but beating Boston at our place–on national TV–is a huge credibility game. It’s one thing to knock off the Raptors and Pistons; beating a perennial, tradition-rich playoff power like the Celtics is something else entirely. Yes, the Hawks have played them well this year, but they’ve still LOST–and LOSING such games over and over again during their ATL tenure is what has earned them such a weak reputation nationally. It’s far past time to end the excuse-making and to quit shrinking from the spotlight. It’s far past time to step up to the big leagues and earn that playoff berth–beginning tomorrow night!

We aren’t getting past the second round either way….and there’s no way we can play the Celtics and have home court. They’re winning their division…meaning they can’t drop below the #4 seed.

Let’s go Hawks!!! I must say that I believe that for the first time in a long time, ATL’s has a good bench. J-Smoove is the reason why they are where they are at, not Joe Johnson. Im on deployment and i happen to notice that Smith is their leading scorer….Really? This dude only makes 1/2 of what Joe Johnson makes and he’s giving his all night in and night out. I think our front court is the reason behind our success minus Marvin Williams. Horford and Smith are the reasons we are where we are. Yeah, i know a lot of people who don’t like his attitude, but if you are the “leader” of your team, you should be vocal and bring him to the side vice counting your money and laughing at how you got over on the Hawks. I’m hoping that the $120 million JJ shows up for the playoffs.

No need to tank. Miami is the only team in East that scares me we can beat everyone else in a series and will do better against Miami than you think.

Hawks-Celtics series would be more exciting. The only disadvantage the hawks would have playing at home is that there will be a lot of Celtic green in that arena.
