Georgia’s problems reaffirm NCAA needs uniform drug policy

Bobby Bowden supports Georgia's drug policy but says it might leave team at a disadvantage.

Bobby Bowden supports Georgia's drug policy but says it might leave the team at a competitive disadvantage.

ATHENS – It’s fair to start with this: There is no excuse for doing something wrong.

There is no excuse for stealing money from a teammate’s dorm room, just because you’re short of cash. No excuse for getting into a physical altercation with a girlfriend, just because there was an argument. No excuse for getting high, just because … well, just because. No excuse for exploring the cannabis culinary arts and eating Alice B. Toklas brownies, just because you were on spring break and you were hungry and, really, honest, pinky-swear, you didn’t even know that there was marijuana in them (uh, right.)

These are some of the reasons why Georgia coach Mark Richt has been suspending or dismissing players at an alarming rate lately – eight since January. This is when nobody seems to remember how many stars were by a recruit’s name on national signing day. Funny how that works.

Richt has a problem. But only part of it has to do with the fact that too many of his players are doing really dumb things. The other has to do with a somewhat unlevel playing field.

Georgia has a fairly strict drug-and-alcohol policy for its student-athletes, relative to most other universities, particularly those in the SEC. UGA suspends players for at least one game (10 percent of schedule) after the first positive test. A second positive test mandates a suspension of at least 30 percent of the schedule (or four games) for a non-controlled substance or 50 percent (six games) for a controlled substance or DUI. A third positive results in dismissal.

An examination of schools in BCS conferences by AOL/Fanhouse in 2010 revealed Georgia and Kentucky were the only two SEC members that suspended players following the first positive drug test. Only six of 68 programs overall do so (Baylor, Cincinnati, Miami and Virginia Tech are the others).

Every time Mark Richt looks up, another player is getting into trouble. (Johnny Crawford/AJC)

Every time Mark Richt looks up, another player is getting into trouble. (Johnny Crawford/AJC)

As a comparison, Florida has among the most lenient policies, with no suspension until the second positive test and no dismissal until the fifth positive.

How often and when, if at all, an athlete is tested also is up to each university. The NCAA, in fact, allows every school to set its own policy.

This is a problem. There needs to be uniformity among athletic programs’ drug-testing policy, not just within conferences but across the country. Anything short of that creates a competitive disadvantage for some.

Among those supporting the idea for uniformity is former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden, Richt’s coaching mentor, who was in Athens on Friday for a high school coaches clinic.

Bowden had a reputation for being soft in the area of player discipline when he coached. But he acknowledges he would have to be tougher if he coached now, saying, “I would have to do a better job of educating the young men, trying to expose them to things where they would learn some moral issues that maybe they missed in their home.”

He supports Georgia’s policy, but doesn’t seem surprised Richt is having problems.

“One reason at Georgia [that] you hear so many boys getting out of line is because they’re so dog-gone restrictive,” he said. “I know a lot of schools — I don’t want to say something I shouldn’t say – but [they] don’t have to drug test. If you don’t want your boys to be caught with drugs, don’t drug-test them. And some schools do that. If you have a strict program, the way our society is, you’re going to have kids [test positive].”

Asked if he supported a universal policy, Bowden said: “Yes. That would be fair. There’s no doubt about it. … Georgia needs to do what’s best for Georgia. And you’ve got to soothe your conscience that you’re not letting bad things happen just because you don’t think somebody’s going to find out. But there’s an advantage if you’re a school that doesn’t test.”

In retirement, Bowden is able to laugh about some things he couldn’t before, such as when Florida State players were found to be receiving free athletic gear from a local sporting-goods store. Borrowing the line from his former thorn, Steve Spurrier, Bowden cracked, “You’ve all heard of Free Shoes University, haven’t you? I had a slogan on my desk: ‘This too shall pass.’”

That is all Richt can bank on right now. And maybe hope for a quieter summer.

JOEY how do you know that? UGa didn’t suspend all the players that rushed the field during the Auburn game in 2010. Half the team would have missed the TECh game, but OF COURSE UGa didn’t follow the SEC rules about rushing the field.

I am as sick as anyone about what has been happening @ UGA with the drugs, but this article is right on target. Smoking marijuana is a cultural thing and if all the sanctimonious fans on these blogs would pull their heads out of their butts they would realize that it is happening at their schools, too. The reason you don’t hear about this problem at other schools is that they don’t suspend for the first offense. Heck, some of them don’t suspend for the second or third offense. Ole Miss doesn’t suspend until after 4 failed tests. Percy Harvin failed 6 tests at Florida and missed a grand total of 2 games in his career. Bowden is correct when he said some schools don’t test, therefore, no failed tests! UGA is recruiting from the same pool that everyone else recruits from and if you think your team’s players are not smoking dope because you have a certain coach or a certain disciplinarian, you are wrong.

Then again, this is CMR’s policy … it is a “stand alone” policy … he himself has gone beyond the requiremnts to the point of detractions … his policy hurts UGA.

Jeff, if most SEC schools recruit the same players, why is it do you think UGA ends up with the ones who get into trouble? Why does this rarely happen at other SEC schools for the most part? Maybe they just hide it better.

In the long run, the stricter drug policy employed by UGA should give the Dawgs a competitive edge since it will result in fewer drug users on the team. Players on drugs are not your best players and certainly dont do well academically.

Kudos to CMR and UGA for being strict on drug use among players. Those who claim UGA’s player misconduct issues are caused by CMR not being strict enough are flat wrong. If he were too lax on discipline, there would be no group warnings to players before spring break and no testing after spring break, and these discipline issues would never come up.

Anyone who has ever complained that CMR and UGA are not “tough enough” on student-athlete discipline has no right to complain now. Clearly, the coaches and administration are “tough enough.” Are they too tough? That’s a matter for debate. But for those who like to poke at Richt and say he’s soft, I submit this week’s events as rebuttal.

you morons that think marijuana should be okay are delusional.

My brother has been hooked on weed since he was 14. He was THE best basketball player and athlete on all his teams growing up but the drug took over. He constantly broke in and robbed from my mother’s house. He pawned everything he could take from her including all Christmas presents to buy weed. He could not hold down a job. The DSS picked up his child who he was keeping one weekend because he left the 4 year old alone while looking for drugs. Two wives left him because of it. Never has had a dime to his name. I could go on but it only gets worse.

Oh but he’s a Bulldog fan so that makes it okay.

Bacarri Rambo should be suspended 2 games, yes, 2 games. If anybody with power @ UGA is reading this, take note and do the right thing! Rambo was suspended last year because a girl he was with had a joint on her, but for some reason Mark Richt Suspended him. Thats incident does not follow under the suspension policy. With this Brownie Spy Gate incident, this is Rambo first offense!!!!!!!! Which if u can read would only give rambo a 10% suspension from the year!!!! As crazy as Rambo’s story is i believe him, this guy would have been a second round pick this year but wanted to come back and help UGA win and become a 2-time All American. Why would he put marijuana in his system on spring break when everybody knew that when the athletics got back they would be tested!!! If there is 1 time where an exception can be made, it would be in the case of Bacarri Rambo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LETS SUPPORT RAMBO, HE’S DYING INSIDE AND I BELIEVE HIM!!!

AD came from Florida-he knows the deal-Richt and his sanctimonial BS. The playing field should be level. Now we lose other recruits b/c UGA standards are higher than our rivals, and know that drug tests will only be administered during the season, and after working their ass off all year they can at least enjoy spring break like 90% of their fellow classmates. Do people not understand that schools with weak drug policies appear to be immune from this issue because they do not have to publicize any failed drug tests? Georgia looks like it has a much more significant issue than other schools, but it’s only because these other schools don’t test or aren’t forced to publicize suspensions related to 1st time offenders. I think it’s ridiculous that people say Richt is too lenient or doesn’t have control of his team. If anything, Richt and Georgia is among the most strict coaches and colleges out there. I agree with Bowden and Shultz that there should be a consistent policy.

Reality Check

March 30th, 2012
4:00 pm

Copied Comment from prior story-seems appropriate here.

Let me offer a possible reality: The current GA players as a group are, no better or worse, no less moral or honest, no less ethical or honorable, than other scholarship athletes at other schools. They do not skip more classes, use more drugs, break more rules, do more things that are illegal, or commit more acts that would bring embarrassment to themselves, their team, or their University. My guess is that as a group, they are in fact, all things being equal, well down on the “good” side of the Bell Curve of Team Morality & Integrity. We are now left with the “all things being equal” question. Having been friends with many Georgia athletes in the early & mid 80’s, as well as hearing my uncle’s stories of his & his Wally Butts’ teammates’ extra curricular activities (no, not drugs), I can’t imagine that those teams, in todays environment would not suffer at least as many suspensions. But back to apples & apples, I would suggest that it is not the players, but the environmental & systemic variables that are responsible for a higher number of suspensions relative to other D1 & SEC schools. Are the Athens & University police more aggressive & less lenient in their enforcement activities? Is the Athletic Department’s drug testing protocols more likely to catch casual drug use? Are Team rules more inclusive & onerous? Is there less likelihood of ignoring infractions? Of course our athletes need to follow the rules and be good teammates & citizens. They need to learn that their actions have personal & broader consequences. We just need to realize that except for game days, The Dawgs are playing on a different field.

So far the Bottom Line here … is UGA can not expect to constantly win due to the requirements of the University, policies of its’ Athletic Department and testing procedures in place. The UGA fan has to accept that it can not longer compete at the highest levels athletically due to its’ (so-called) moral compass, raising the standards where it can only look down upon the rest of the SEC. … and no longer compete.

Insanity! UGA’s drug policy is SOOOO Asinine and downright terrible! Personally, I smoke marijuana and feel there is NOTHING AT ALL wrong with the plant, and actually encourage many people in my personal life, who are feeling stress or anxiety to try it medicinally. The fact that a player was disciplined at all, let alone for a quarter of the season, is downright disgusting and should be a crime. I hope Richt gets what he deserves for this and gets fired immediately. Let players be FREE, this is America isn’t it? Secondly, the author and Bobby Bowden are SPOT ON about UGA’s drug policy, and that it needs a MAJOR step down in harshness and fairness. Player’s all over the SEC smoke marijuana regularly and face no suspension or discipline at all. Some don’t even test, and the others require multiple failed tests before a suspension is warranted. UGA is putting itself at a competitive disadvantage and harming their future recruits from coming to UGA. If UGA and Mark Richt don’t stop this nonsense very few 4 and 5 star recruits will be willing to come to an authoritative, abusive, unfair school whose discipline rivals 19th century catholic schools. Just ridiculous we are even talking about discipline for smoking weed in 2012. Rambo is a great player and yes we need him, but at what expense? 2nd violation he needs to be kicked off the team. No, for now, it won’t be a big deal, but later in life he will have wished he made a better decision after being warned.

Now the problem with the players today is they are smoking daily and during the season, something that was very rare in the past but today people claim it is the same, it is not in any way.

The problem, every player is in the same meeting from day one and signs they understand the punishment for pot is suspension during off season from games, during season dismissal. What really pisses me off is thieves and assaulting women, ogletree should have been told that after the stealing incident – anything else you are dismissed. The same goes with Sanders Comings – if you assault a female you are gone regardless of excuses – you are dismissed.

Richt is a pssy and so is McGarity and the others supposedly in leadership position and responsible.

Georgia is now Bobby Bowdens version of Florida State, criminals and THUG U. A bunch of bilbe thumping talking head hipocrites!

And who wrote this blog today? The Georgia Athletic Department. Take the drug test out of the equation and I still bet Georgia has one of the highest behavior problems in all college football. You are blind if you don’t see the real problem but cheerleaders seldom do.

This team plays sloppy on the football field. This team had an athletic director that gets locked up for a DUI in a car with a girl’s pantie’s in his lap. Every month it is “we are going to improve ourselves” and every month someone out of this very small group of privileged people goes to jail or should of for breaking the law. And I bet for every one in the paper there are 10 that get off because of who they are or influence for adult groupies who have no life. This team does not want to play for Georgia, I am not even sure the coaches even care beyond their own selfishness to what this does. I don’t think Georgia realizes these kids lose football games because of off field lack of disciple. Cry all you want to about unfairness, I see a bunch of wasted talent, because things have been made too easy not too hard. These guys lost to Colorado two years ago the worst team in football They lost to Mississippi State, no amount of suspensions should have allowed this fine a group of athletes to lose to those far less talented groups.

I agree completely Jeff, but I also think the NCAA would need to enforce it by conducting the testing themselves. Clearly Georgia isn’t afraid to test its star players and right after Spring Break no less.. but unless the NCAA also creates tight rules around who is tested and how often, you will have the same problems of teams policing themselves and not testing their best athletes or by giving them a heads up, so the test isn’t a surprise or random.

Isn’t Syracuse potentially in trouble because they didn’t enforce penalties for their failed tests under their own policy? Again, stupid for them to get in trouble for that when there is nothing set in place that says they even have to have a set policy.

Unfortunate for Georgia this story was leaked… it will be difficult now for Rambo to “appeal” and have his suspension either swept under the rug or reduced to 2 games.

Good for Georgia for having a tough policy and actually enforcing it. I am not upset with Richt or any of the coaches over this. Sit Rambo’s butt and let the next guy step up and play. It’s surprising that NCAA allows each school to have their own drug policy especially when it comes to sports. There definitely needs to be standards and equal playing field when it comes to something this serious. I side with CMR on this one. C'mon man!

March 30th, 2012
4:46 pm

The opinion in this blog and the comments are exactly what is wrong with this country. Instead of taking responsbility and trying to correct the problem at UGA, I’ve read “we need to make fair playing field” and “others just do not test.” First, if the UGA athletic department makes its standards, then they have no right to try and impose their standards on anyone else. There are NCAA and SEC standards. If the school does more, fine. If it “harms” the school then that is for the school to deal with but UGA has no authority or right to impose its testing standards on any other institution. Obviously, UGA’s standards and discipline are not working. Second, the results of drug testing are private as they should be considered a medical report. Why this information is always reported in the AJC, I have no clue. It is possible that other schools are testing, the athletes’ tests are negative, and there is no reason to announce it to the world. Just because some UGA athletes test positive does not mean that the other SEC schools are covering up their positive tests. Maybe those schools have better drug awareness programs or those athletes realize if they miss a few games, they will not see the field because their backup will take their position. Just because it happens in Athens, does not mean that it happens in Gainesville, Columbia, or any other SEC town. Third, the plantation comments are so offensive. So UGA has drug testing. So what. that does not mean that the other schools do not care about their players and treat them as products of a plantation. The last time SEC football graduation rates came out which emcompassed enrollees from 2001 to 2004, UGA ranked 4th behind Vandy, LSA, Florida and Bama. Auburn and MS State were close behind UGA. Three schools that finished ahead of UGA in graduation rates have won national championships and so did the one right behind. Maybe the issue goes beyond the positive drug testing or stealing from your teammates. Maybe it goes to the dancing in the endzone or the coach making the “choke” sign to a college student. Maybe the AJC should worry about the field at UGA before comparing it to other schools because in reality, it does not compare.

UGA’s drug policy does appear to be much sterner than most other schools but I am not sure that having an NCAA sanctioned standard would level the playing field – even if all of the membersw could agree on a workable standard. If schools can work out how to work around scholarship signing limits they can work around drug testing limits. You’d see school A with random testing of players school B tested them on a schedule.

There is no way auburn would have graduation rates that high! Less than 50% of thier black football players graduate from Auburn(not my story USA Today last year posted the results). Remove the so called drug issues from the UGA issues and you still have major discipline problems and it shows each and every game. Richt has no problem playing thugs since he came from Thug U and only upgraded is resume at FSU. Someone in the AD complex likes the guy no doubt. He wins some games but is no threat to take it to another level due to lack of player discipline and just respect. The UGA players fell the need to get into the face of the opposition each and every game and that is a fact and that is on the staff! Do your job and STFU and play but that isn’t good enough for your team. You talk a great game but you don’t play at the same level.

Stop blame game and fix the problem! I can see Crowell walking away from Nick Saban after one of his many feckups! Yeah right. That speaks volume for anybody with half a brain.

Dawglasville – You can say that you are not getting “racial” but you should have used a better choice of words. Your comments show that you know nothing about how Saban runs his program or his character. I know that UGA fans like to disparage him but I think you attacking a man’s character that you obviously know little about is very sad. He and has wife has given back so much to the Tuscaloosa community before the tornado and an incredible amount after. If you ever hear his players speak about him, you know that they look up to him. Maybe that (instead of hiding and covering up the rule breaking) is why these men are not getting into as much trouble as some other programs. He emphasizes academics. For example, the 2009 team which was undefeated and won a National Championship had 13 players who had graduated during the season and 22 had graduated by the bown game. Alabama placed 38 players on the SEC Honor Roll in 2011, the highest in the SEC. I know that Richt is a good person. I am not saying anything bad about his character. That is the difference I see between the UGA fans and other fans. You cannot attack his coaching ability because the results are there. However, you should get informed before you attack a man’s character. Would you say these thing to his face or tell his players they are on a plantation?

Typical, VERY predictable response by the pups here — also the same logic/excuse used by every 5th grader on the planet. “Well everybody else is just as bad” Really? Are you actually suffering from such a rectal-cranial inversion that you believe that? It’s truly sad what is going on with the UGA football program right now. The focus should be on winning a National title, which ya’ll definitely have the talent for. However, as long as you continue to use “special admissions” for over 70% of the football players this is the sort of mess you are going to have to deal with. Trying to point out what other programs do or don’t do is truly pathetic. How does what UF, UA, USC, UT, GT, VT, Clem, etc, etc do somehow justify your own teams failures??? How about being adults and saying “We have a problem with the discipline in our program and we are going to fix it. Others can do/don’t do as they wish — it’s irrelevant to us and our situation” instead of acting like little boys and saying “well Johnny did worse than I did!” as if that somehow makes your own problems/acts acceptable. Most college kids (and MANY adults) smoke pot from time to time and I too feel it isn’t particularly a big deal. However, when you have been given the honor of a full athletic scholarship to a Division-1 school, you must hold yourself (and be held by others) to a higher standard, no pun intended. Pointing your fingers at other programs in a pathetic attempt to justify or diminish the problems within your own is just laughable. Man up and clean your own house instead of whining about others!!

I looked him in the eye and told him about my mothers cancer and said I just want her to get HUNGRY cause she was losing weight like a 25 year old girl would die for. He got me 2 Js. i went to mom and dads. I gave then to mom. Dad tried to get in a physical fight with me over me bringing DOPE in the house. He thinks it should be a legal prescribed drug but since it is illegal he went NUTZ. I think Mary J has uses and needs to be prescribed too. The Issue here is it is illegal. RAMBO knew it but didn’t care enough for the possible great season UGa could have and still smoke it. FOOL.

ALL of you crying for a UNIFORM DRUG POLICY need to agree that NO player that can’t get in school with his/her ACT or SAT and High School transcripts should be admitted. At UGa the regular student body only has 6% Special Admits. Make that Apply to the Athletes too. Don’t cry UNIFORM POLICY if that doesn’t apply ACROSS the BOARD to ALL STUDENTS.

Ok of the BCS schools only 57% test for banned substances. Of those less than 1% have strict punishmennts. So less than 1% of BCS schools really care if their players follow the rules. I’m glad UGA holds their players to a higher standard. And drug enforcement isn’t the same as academic admissions. Marijuana is banned, the unintelligent aren’t. Illegal drugs and admissions have nothing in common. They can only set minimum standards because you can’t hold valdosta state to the same standards as harvard. Schools like the ivy league would not like having to lower their requirments for admissions, this is why there are minimums. Now banned substances should be treated equally. Banned substances shouldn’t create a competitive disadvantage. If everyone has to follow the same rulebook, then they should have the same penalties.

C’mon man! – I would like to take your argument about what is wrong with this country in another direction. Some are going to hold Saban in such high regard because of the trophies. He is a winner. That is the American way. I can’t do that. Not as long as he gray shirts. He is putting his career before the needs of those kids. That is one example of why I think your coach, your University, and your fan base has a plantation mentality. I think it is funny that you some of you Bama guys call Richt “da preacher man” when you guys think that Saban the Second Coming and he has no faults. Let him go 8-4 and then let’s see how great of a man he is. Oh, and by the way I would have no problem telling Coach Saban or his players that I believe that the University of Alabama was run like a plantation if I knew any of those gentlemen. My comments were directed more to those who want to worship him on Saturday.

Big Crimson 75 – Unlike you, I guess I am surprised at your age, assuming you graduated from Alabama in 75. Someone needs to be the strictest. Equal and the same regulations brings into the solution of no ifs buts or ands. Some would get away with some more harsh incident than others based on how it effects the culture of the community or school. Equality in this sense is not equality. Having uniformity everywhere consititutes people in positions to regulate and administer punishment to the organization without fail. Communistic kind of idea with the all the same idea.

Adams put in the strict drug testing, just like everything else at UGA in the last 15 years. This was probably when he was campaigning for the NCAA job and wanted to appear tough on crime. Schools need drug testing to spot meth and cocaine and more dangerous substances. These things are on campus tool. If you allow marijuana, then you allow dope dealers who steal players wallets.. The story of the girl having a joint in her purse is in the same category as the brownies on the counter and the red panties mystery. If it was in her purse, how did the cops find it? Did they search passengers? Was the car filled with smoke? The marijuana issue aside, what about the thefts and violence against women? Richt is the conference master at covering up illegal behavior, and that is exactly why it continues.

Big Crimson 75 – you got me on a technicality. You did not say THUGA on your 4:13 post. You wrote, “Nothing is gonna help UGA’s much deserved Thug Image.” Now – you think that tag THUG fits the University of Georgia Football program. Underage drinking, pot, stealing a bicycle helmet? I smoked pot my sophomore year at UGA. I stole a hoola hope from Hooters probably that same year. I drank underage in high school. So, did that make me a thug? If that did then unfortunately a lot of college kids are thugs. Those same thugs go to Alabama, MIT, Clayton State, Georgetown. You name the school, those kids are there too.

Richt is not only testing them when he knows they are most likely to fail, he is following through with the punishment. He gives them the freedom to screw up and punishes them when they do. He teaches them a lesson. Maybe Rambo and Tree are not coachable in life. I don’t think Coach Richt will put up with it much longer. If you like your guy, fine. Most UGA fans like our guy. Yea that’s a great idea let’s make more rules for the NCAA to legislate. In the past if there was a suspicion of drug use the players in question would be tested. Not in this day and age, everything has to be equal. Love how some folks on here are still in denial about the trend at UGA and want to deflect it by saying this school and that school do it why don’t they get in trouble? The main reason why you don’t hear about other schools is simple they keep it in house the way it should be. If you are going to drug test student athlete’s then why not drug test the whole student body for that matter.

Guys. the truth has to be realized that it is 2012 and pot is a blessing, and one of the most harmless and beautiful drugs in the world. I can’t even believe penalty and pot are mentioned in the same sentence. This is Georgia, and especially in Atlanta and most of South Georgia, the majority of kids 15-25 smoke pot, I would say 75 percent, all races-white, black, asian, latino, everyone. The list of potheads at UGA could fill a phone book…

Odell Thurman
Justin Houston
Carlton Thomas
Isiah Crowell
Ken Malcolme
Branden Smith
Bacarri Rambo
Alec Ogletree

and those are just the guys I know have gotten caught. Im sure at least 40 percent of the team smokes. I mean I still dont (and will never) understand what the big deal is. This is brutal to watch these good kids get crucified for smoking a harmless, mellow herb in the privacy of their apartments. And to those who say it is illegal. You won’t be able to say that in 5 years, as 13 states have already legalized medical marijuana, and California is likely to legalize fully in 2012. Narrowly missed last vote at 48 percent approval. When it becomes legal, is UGA still going to be suspending guys for a third of the season for lighting a legal joint? Probably, sadly….

Many past teammates who are black that did not project a thug image, got a degree and does not smoke weed or have alcohol problems are very successful. The very fact that GA / Mark Richt recruits a player with no rules discussed prior to signing is where the problem starts:

Mandatory Understanding To Play Football At Georgia:

Go To Class and Persue Education —
Project Image At All Times– No long hair or dreads, facial hair, baggy pants, etc.
Discipline– No list of penalties as stages or per bad deeds, your off scholarship on one, on two your off team

These GA fans that want to accept 10 -4 season as successful should be fine with this. I demand more from our leadership at GA which is non existant. What interest does the NCAA have in this? They apparently already give schools the ability to make their drug policy as harsh or as lenient as they want. I could see the NCAA taking an interest in performance enhancing drugs, but recreational drugs? Would a team that passed the doobie before a game have a competitive advantage over a team that didn’t? Someone mentioned Liberty University. If Liberty suspends a player for premarital hand holding or dancing, should the NCAA impose similar rules on other schools or should they set a more lenient policy for Liberty U?

One gripe I have is these policies should be set at a certain number of games. For instance one game, two game, or five game suspension for each offense. Suspending someone for a percentage of games seems ridiculous. I’m all for simplification.

Maybe if the other team is drunk.

Who cares? The policies, standards and rules are in place and are conveyed to every athlete signing with UGA. There should be no surprise’s to any athlete about this, and the consequences of failing to follow the set policies, standards, and rules. This is not Mark Richt’s or the Universities fault. The blame, and ensuing punishment, belongs with the offending students. ***********************************************************************
That has nothing to do with the policy. And in this state you are in illegal possesion if you have alcohol in your system under the age of 21. So instead of trying to legitimize the offense obey the law and thus the rules. It’s not like they don’t know the penalties from Richt if they want to chance it. It’s tough and should be tough. Making it universal in the NCAA is fair. You want a paid education, obey the rules.

Good points Jeff.

The reality is that kids today are in such a fish bowl with all this social media. They aren’t necessarily doing dumber things than previous generations, everything is just so out in the open. I think the problem with this generation of student athlete is that they aren’t taught how to use failure as a learning opportunity because they aren’t taught how to fail. There is either no consequence for failing, or the punishment is FAR too severe and it ruins their lives. The purpose of higher education and athletics is for students to fail, experience it,and then find a way to overcome it. But the problem at places like UGA is that it’s all about money at the expense of the quality of the education. Sure the top 10% succeeds and makes all the fancy alumni publications, but the other 90% is pretty much disregarded. Our schools are far too big to fail in this country, but that’s another rant.

What it comes down for the UGA football players is that right or wrong, the policies are strict. And if they choose to break them, they do so at their own discretion.

The pont of this article is that UGA has tough penalties for a player smoking pot. The article points out that UGA’s policy is, in fact, as tough as Kentucky’s and one of the toughest is the SEC.

Here is the problem for all the UGA fans wanting to cling to the supposed “unfairness.”…The penalties only go into effect if you break the rule. If the players didn’t act like idiots and do pot to begin with, then they wouldn’t be suspended for 10%, or 50% or get kicked off the team.

Louisiana-Monroe_Anyone?

“a lot of schools don’t even drug test to identify if a penalty should even be imposed.” So, umm, do you proof of that, or is that just something that all UGA fans are saying over and over until it is believed?

However, it still doesn’t change my point. If players would simply not break a rule to begin with, then you wouldn’t have to worry about it at all now would you? AND, if UGA really is testing more than anybody else, then doesn’t that make the fact that your players are failing drug test even more idiotic?

Umm… I see you don’t get the point. The RULE is UNFAIR to begin with, when 90 percent of the other SEC schools either don’t test AT ALL, or don’t PUNISH for failed tests until the 3rd or 4th, then how is that even close to fair. Banning pot, a natural relaxing herb, is as arbitrary (in my opinion) as banning them from eating vanilla pudding. So if Georgia suspended Aaron Murray, Isaiah Crowell, and Jarvis Jones are suspended for 8 games for eating Vanilla pudding, while players at Alabama and LSU have pudding parties where they go through dozens of vanilla, chocolate, and butterscotch pudding is that fair? Because that is the honest truth to me, I don’t agree with weed’s legality, and I think it is no more harmful than a dinner mint, and suspension for it’s use is disgusting and SHOULD be called out, and the coach enforcing the suspension should be fired. There is no line drawn at UGA, and next thing we know they will be infringing more on these youngsters privacy rights as to what they do in the privacy of their own homes….UP NEXT at UGA suspensions coming for anyone caught sipping a glass of wine for dinner, having premarital relations with a female, or smoking a cigarette in a public place. the point of the article….as you missed, pertains to the fact that not all schools are regulating their teams by the same rules.

My PROOF is shared in schultz’s article in that only 5 other schools carry such a stiff penalty for 1st time offenders. there’s no public information on just how many times a school actually administers the drug tests. i have no idea whether UGA administers more than others or not…..though i’ll bet that they do…based on the fact that they have installed such heavy penalties for failing such tests.

a penalty should be enforced to the UGA players for breaking the rulles….but its not an even playing field when other schools don’t enforce such penalties.—–that is the point of the article.

Umm

Louisiana…

“but its not an even playing field when other schools don’t enforce such penalties…”

The problem with your supposed point is that nothing is equal in college athletics. Academic admission policies are different at schools…so is the academic standards by which you get to keep your scholarship…recruiting budgets are different…as is atheletic department incomes…as are salaries…attendance,,,facilities…etc.

You can complain about how the playing field on this one issue is not equal. However, I think it has more to do with the fact that UGA has been bitten by the doobie bud as of late.

Academic Man – if all colleges had the same academic standards as Vandy or say Yale, the college populations would drop to a fraction of what they are now – football players or no. The vast majority of the population does not rank a 130 or higher IQ and neither are they able to ace SAT’s or what test you choose as a qualifier. Colleges have always had differeing standards of admission regardless of football. Having said that, I have previously written that a college should not allow ANYONE admission unless they meet the criteria they set for ALL students. That would level the playing field a great deal and return the college game to the level of true amatur sports and get rid of the insane expectations for these teams and players – it’s suspposed to be for fun, afterall.

If everyone stays away from Sanford Stadium this season it will send a huge message to the idiots that be in Athens. There is not a single game on Georgia’s schedule that any average Georgia team should lose. Not one. If Richt loses any game on this 2012 schedule he should be fired. If the idiots that be suspend the whole team, that is their business as long as NO games are lost.

I know that all the old fart, Richt loving D.A.’s will still show up every week to support the mediocre B.S., but if the University of Georgia Football team loses ONE game on this schedule then every one with a brain should boycott every game at Sanford Stadium. There are a LOT of people who work hard for their money who support this nonsense in Athens, and just like the FAILING days of Ray Goff, we should see large gaping holes in the seating at Sanford if every single game is not won. These idiots are also spending tax payer money from many Georgians who could care less about how inept UGA’s coaching staff is. This is a travesty. It makes no sense that these football players can go to the local bar and drink 10 shots of tequila, but if they smoke half a joint they get suspended. Alcohol is much more harmful anyway. Ruining an athlete’s life because of pot. It’s never for the dangerous toxic drugs like cocaine, meth, or heroin. How many people are killed by drivers under the influence of marijuana? Compared to deaths due to speeding, texting or not wearing a seat belt? Not so many I bet, but very difficult to determine.

Fact is, it is an illegal drug according to the laws of this country and to me the point is that if you don’t obey the laws and then get caught, you suffer the consequences. Also, I am pretty sure Ron Coleman was smoking weed when he was attacked by Arthur Banks deers, so that is why I mentioned it. I hope Arthur gave Dirk Kutter a bonus for taking out Latrino. President Adams has been trying to clean up the UGA “party school” reputation, and after a few incidents and issues, has turned the page and is doing his best by going after the students and athletes with more restrictive policies. That is the bottom line. I am not sure where I read the article, but it was a very interesting read and makes total sense.
