Mark Richt and Todd Grantham both earned contract extensions. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)
ATHENS – Once you get past the standard, astronomic, cartoon-like expectations of spring — Will Georgia go 13-1 next season? Maybe 14-0 if the dang, cheatin’ refs ain’t from Bessemer? — it’s worth noting that Todd Grantham has accomplished something pretty significant in Athens.
Something even bigger than evolving from sideline sideshow on YouTube — and who knew that was possible?
The Bulldogs, the team headed by a former offensive coordinator (Mark Richt), the program that recently had produced the likes of A.J. Green and Matthew Stafford — only to too often get punched in the mouth by Alabama, Florida or LSU — has discovered the key to success in the SEC.
Defense.
Who knew?
It’s important to note that college football in general, and the SEC in particular, doesn’t mirror the changing NFL. The pros have become pass-happy on offense. That means nickel defenses are now the rule, not the exception (which means old-school middle linebackers such as Curtis Lofton, who neither pass rush nor drop into coverage, can’t command the lofty free-agent dollars they used to).
But defense still rules in the SEC, and this is where Georgia’s return to relevance comes in.
When Grantham — Richt’s fourth choice as defensive coordinator — was hired two years ago, the Dogs were coming off a season in which they ranked 38th in total defense and 63rd in points against. The question wasn’t whether Willie Martinez would get fired, the question was whether he would be able to make it out of the parking lot.

Oh, boy. Here we go again.
Grantham, now in his third spring with the Dogs, has brought success — the defense ranked fifth in yardage last season, 23rd in scoring and third in third-down efficiency– but more important he has changed the mentality and the focus at Georgia.
When asked what is different now from what he saw on tape from Georgia players when he arrived, Grantham said, “The biggest thing we’ve done is we’ve become more resilient. We’ve learned to play every play. Did guys learn our system better last season? Yes. Were guys more comfortable? Yes. But playing the next play, competing, playing the game the way you’re supposed to, with effort, with toughness — that’s it. We’re tougher mentally. We’re tougher physically.”
There will be no cartoon-like predictions here. But that change in philosophy, combined with the Dogs’ soft-as-nougat-schedule next season, does set up for a potentially — potentially — special season. Also, Grantham seems to have learned from his own head-exploding tendencies.
“I’m driven,” he said, in comical understatement.
Driven — sort of like how Yosemite Sam was driven to get Bugs Bunny, only to inadvertently wire his boot to the dynamite.
Grantham admits he has “lived and learned. There are cameras everywhere.”
Two years ago, one spotted him grabbing his throat and yelling, “You’re gonna [bleepin'] choke” at Florida kicker Chas Henry, as the 21-year-old was lining up for a potential game-winning field goal.
Last season came the postgame skirmish with Vanderbilt coach James Franklin, fueled in part by Grantham’s beliefs that the Commodores were playing dirty.
Days following each incident, Grantham expressed regret. “I’ll use it as a learning experience,” he said of the Franklin confrontation.
So it won’t happen again?
“We’ll see,” he said, smiling. “When you put a hundred hours a week into something, you’ve got a pretty vested interest in it.”
Two embarrassing incidents had the potential to derail things. But Grantham has managed to overcome, well, himself.
The defense succeeded last season despite having 11 different lineups in 14 games because of suspensions and injuries. Georgia has great athletes, but that always has been the case. College teams aren’t defined by the number of stars on letter-of-intent day, they’re defined by how players develop and play.
“In this profession you either get better or worse, so you can’t stop teaching,” Grantham said. “In the pros [as an assistant with Dallas] I saw that if a guy knew that you could make him better and extend his career, you never had issues with him. At this level, you’re obviously developing more. But when players know you have a genuine interest in them and they believe in you, that goes a long ways.”
Grantham spent 11 years in the NFL. When asked if he prefers coaching in college, he said, “Obviously, I wanted to come here. I was friends with Nick Saban and used to watch him when he was at LSU. Systematically, we’re pretty similar. I felt like we could have that kind of success.”
The Dogs aren’t nearly at the Saban level of success. But at least they’ve figured out which side of the ball matters most.

I love Grantham. He is exactly what UGA needed. Hard-nosed, no bs guy. That’s how I want my defense, just some tough sob’s. And you’re darn right they’ll fight for this guy, they’ve seen him fight for them, almost literally. I’m very excited about the future. If these kids would just realize, they’ve got to fight for Georgia, and for each other. It’s gonna be a good year.

Come on guys. The AJC, just like almsot all of the Atlanta media, loves UGA a lot more than GT. Heck even during the season on Atlanta’s WSB they have a show called Bulldawgs Gameday/Gameweek. Tech doesn’t even get that in their own city, ha. That’s what happens when your football team does not matter, loses to UGA annually, and wins/gets excited about 7-8 win seasons. Oh and losing 6-7 bowl games in a row does not help : )

Granthams defense gets a little more credit then it deserves. If you look across the entire SEC, offensive numbers have dropped considerably over the past few years and UGA played the worst of the worst. Even with that the numbers tend to look a lot worse against winning teams and UGA gave up almost 40 points a game against ranked teams. There is also the fun stat of red zone defense which UGA was 116th in the country. Overall he improved UGA’s defense some but it isn’t anywhere close to an elite LSU/Bama like defense.

Great article, if you would please take over writing about GA football.
Biggest Question once again skipped: Is it true that you are unwilling to sign your contract extension that is being offered? I was told from the beginning that Todd Grantham wants a huge sum of money and if not offered such would not sign. Huge is alot more than 1 million a year. GA fans need to enjoy 2012 because it will be Todd Granthams swan song in Athens.

Look at the depth chart on D this year that Grantham has developed. DT – he has Big Jon Jenkins and Kwame – even Saban would take that 1-2punch. His ends include Abry Jones, Garrison Smith, Derrick Lott – and now Cornelious (who is a pass rushing moster) and Reverend Drew (who is filling out his beastlike frame)
Linebackers? Jarvis “All American” Jones and Alec Ogletree – who will be one by anyone’s standards. Mike Gilliard and Herrerra killed it last year and Christian Robinson is a natural born leader. Throw in Ramil Wilson and Josh Harvey as a Freshman and that is one hell of a 2 deep.
Shawn Williams and B Rambo might be the best Safety combo in the conference and if Swann and MM can get through the Missouri game, we get B Smith and Commings back – both big time speed guys.
2013 will be a different story, but this year’s D has the makings of something absolutely epic and vicious.

OK, so the “choke sign” was embarassing and he apologized.
The “James Franklin incident” was completely ontarget and NO apology deserved. Franklin was the idiot in that fiasco (and many other scenarios as we have come to realize) and Grantham gained considerable traction with his players and true UGA fans by standing up for his players. He let Franklin know that if he had a problem that he needed to address it on a coaching level. BTW, not much has been said about it in order to preserve harmony, but CMR’s remarks caught by the Nashville camera crew was the embarassing moment in that post-game.

Can we quit talking about a cupcake schedule and a special season? It’s about the same schedule as last year. Missouri for Boise St. Everything else is about the same. We have the same players minus three offensive linemen and TE plus now our best receiver is on defense. Remember narrow wins over Florida, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Kentucky and GT. This team will have to play really good to win ten games. It’s a lot tougher schedule than you think. I’m optimistic about the season but it will not be a cake walk like some people think. I love the intensity from Coach Grantham. It’s nice to see the hate for Florida and the want to knock other teams into the dirt, instead of a lackadaisical approach like our offense has. On another note, I am sick and tired of hearing about how this is our year and that the schedule favors a championship season. I wouldn’t want to be known as the team with the weakest schedule in the conference and back dooring it into the Championship game. This crappy schedule will not toughen our team up enough to compete with an LSU or Alabama, and then another Championship worthy team if we can get past the SEC Title game. So quit talking about this being our year, because with this schedule we outta demolish the competition with the talent we have, and should expect to win, not wishfully think.

Georgia will never be on Alabama’s level as long as Saban is there and Richt is in Athens. Richt does not have the experience or the flexibility to run a program on that level. Saban comes from the Parcells coaching tree; Richt from the Bowden tree. Which one you think has been more effective and successful concerning developing men into hard nosed football players? This is Richt’s first and only job. He does not see his mistakes because each new contract tells him “he knows what he is doing.” Georgia will always be good, but not ever great under Richt. If so, they would have played in one BCS title game in 11 seasons. Richt is like Paul Hewitt, Bobby Cremins, Rick Adelman, Doc Rivers, etc.: They can’t win unless they have a team full of stars at every position. And even when they do, they screw it up on the biggest stage. That group of coaches I named, can’t develop players. The players must be “extraordinary” before they hit campus. Now will Georgia be good as long as Richt’s there? Sure. But everybody in the country knows they have under achieved.
slydog
March 28th, 2012
2:02 am
To add: Grantham’s defense can be all world, but sooner or later, people figure you out. The Head Coach is inflexible and unchanging and does not know how to make the proper adjustments. Just look at the SEC title game. How the heck did Georgia lose that game 42-10 after allowing LSU no first downs and 10 net yards in the first half? Despite the fact that Georgia matched LSU athlete for athlete, LSU prevailed as a “team.” That comes from coaching. More specifically, head coaching.

Right and wrong. Grantham had no business addressing Franklin. He IS NOT A HEAD COACH, but Franklin is. it should have been handled at the head coaching level. Most schools do not even allow their assistants to address the media, even during spring practice. If he wanted to address Franklin directly, he should have done it in a “cooler” manner, and let Richt be the one to scream and yell at Franklin (yes, I know, it would have never happened). But it’s the right thing to do.

Grantham understands that D wins in football. Dooley owes most of those winning seasons to Erk Russell and his D players. Offensive guys were often recruited and put on D ( George Patton comes to mind) because Dooley understood the need to shut the other team down or at least hold the score down to keep you in the game. It took Richt a while to learn this and in my opinion UGA will quickly be on par with Bama and LSU.

Jeff, I would compare Grantham’s second year D favorably with Saban’s second year D when he arrived at Bama, (notice I didn’t say Smart’s D). UGA’s 2011 season was comparable to Saban’s second year team at Bama when Parker Wilson was a senior, and oh yeah, if I remember correctly UGA beat Bama that year. For obvious reasons, as stated by Grantham in your article, the UGA players had to be taught a tougher attitude among other things after “Soft Willie” was in charge for several years, but he has the bull by the horns now, and as his players have bought into Grantham’s teachings will be one of the top defenses in the nation in 2012. We will see performances like the first half of the SEC Championship Game against LSU every game for four quarters in 2012.
As far as the big mouthed Bama fans go, I remember like it was yesterday when UGA had a dominant team in the early eighties how myself and all of the rest of the UGA faithful ran our mouths about how good the Dawgs were and this and that. As much as Saban runs his team like a pro team, he did lose a heap of experienced talent from last year’s team, and I predict this will result in similar results as 2010 for Bama, losing at least two, maybe even three games, but they will probably be hard to deal with again in 2013.
UGA is primed for a special season in 2012, but will lose much talent after the season and will have to get the next round of starters experience as well. Such as it is in college ball.

All Mark Richt has done is whip your sorry teams butt five of the last six seasons with the exception of your bought and paid for one hit, one semester wonders in 2010. 2012 will be NO different.
I agree that in time, and given some experienced players that the Aubie’s D will improve under Van Gorder, as long as “Soft Willie” is held in check, but their offense has no play makers, that little scrawny running back that they have left after the pos Dyer was kicked out of Opelika ain’t gonna get it done by himself. 1) If the Bulldogs are even going to sniff “undefeated”, Aaron Murray HAS to take care of the ball better.
2) Those “embarrassing moments” helped recruit a bunch of top defensive players who wanted to see some passion come out of that emotional morgue at UGA that Richt had in place.

I could not disagree more with this column. The key to UGA’s success in 2012 and beyond is the offensive line. We will not be winning any championships until that group grows a little sack and starts blocking better. They’ve been getting a free pass from the fans for too long now while the QB takes all the heat. It is not Aaron Murray’s responsibility to run block people. We have absolutely no running game against good teams. You won’t beat any good teams in the SEC, or the Big 10 for that matter as we saw in the bowl game, without a running game. It puts too much pressure on the rest of the team. The QB starts pressing trying to make plays. The defense gets tired. Defense DOES NOT win championships. Defense AND a strong running game wins championships.
Class dismissed.

TampaGator, the facts speak for themselves and I cannot argue with them. But if you watched those games, particularly LSU and MSU, you would know that our defense played well enough to win. They weren’t perfect and there is room for improvement, but with a little help from the offense we could have beat MSU and at least stayed in the building with LSU and perhaps even won. The offense put the D in absolutely horrific situations with turnovers and 3 and out after 3 and out. It all comes back to the lack of a running game. Our O-line was absolutey humilated in both of those games and got their tails whipped bad. That’s why we lost those games.
Thanks.

Penalties kill Georgia. It is an attitude that drugs the whole program. There is no disciple, lots of talent according to reports, but most of it never sees the field. The other team is dirty? A huge amount of these penalties come from cheap shots taken by the Georgia defense, it is documented. And when they are not being penalized they are out of position trying to make ESPN kind of cheap shots instead of playing disciple football. The only thing that has saved Georgia is the demise last year of Florida, Tennessee and Auburn. Nothing to do with defense, just pure luck. They didn’t beat South Carolina, and didn’t play anybody else until they played LSU which killed them. Nothing in that game showed anybody they are in that class of the SEC, and then Alabama beats LSU about like LSU beat Georgia. Smoke and mirrors ,and paid PR, can’t hide the truth this team is always one wild night from disaster. I dealt in the history of the SEC has more talent been wasted by poor coaching and poor administration. You should be making them including Grantham earn this respect not cheap grace for a job yet done.

I would, just once, love to see Grantham’s defense shut down that GT option. Yes, we’ve beaten them both years under his watch, but it was more of a ‘bend but don’t break’ defense that was used, primarily because of GT’s weaknessess with the passing game. I know GT will get their yards, but I’d just like to see UGA hold them under 300 yards for a change.

Wow: GA say I am not a fan when I mention the fact that Todd Grantham, then one most on this thread are saying is great, is not going to sign a new contract and it has been over 6 months now since it started negotiations. Todd Grantham is gone, without a doubt he is gone if Richt signs through 2016.
Facts: Todd Grantham has brought a life to the defensive team not seen since BVG who is now at Auburn, however, the GA defense has been less than stellar in many games having had their a^^ handed to them by B ST, S Carolina, Vandy, LSU, M St. Some weaker teams had some very successful halfs of football against us as well.
GA biggest issue continues from 09,10,11: we do not have a QB that is any good. Every fan needs to quit blaming OL etc and realize that until a football team has a TOP LEVEL QB, many let downs will occur. Look for a 9-3, 10-2 season against what is undoubtably the easies schedule ever and the worse home schedule ever.

Tampagator, you can’t look at the final score to determine how the defense played…..i seem to remember a pick 6 Murray threw in the bowl game to let them back in it and I’m sure he turned it over a few other times so NO, the defense didn’t give up over 30 points to MSU.
Didn’t the D also keep LSU from getting a first down in the first half before the turnovers happened and the flood gates opened in the second half? It’s hard to stop a very good power running team like LSU when our D is on the field the whole second half…..

I love my dogs, but Coach Grantham needs to improve the defense against teams with winning records. The thing I hate most is looking back at the games against LSU and Michigan State. The first half of both games the defense was exactly what i want to see from a Bulldog Defense. The second half of both games, the defense did not look so good. Not sure if it was conditioning, prevent defenses or Murrays bad field position with costly turn overs. This upcoming season, we must sustain the 1st half play throughout the entire game to be in the LSU, Alabama class. Grantham needs to finish the drill in this upcoming season in both halves of the game against good competition.

Who knows maybe you people have decided like Tech that there is something lost in not being a football factory, and if so good for you, but stop spending so much money. Do you think any coach in the SEC or the ACC for that matter could not do just as well with the talent you have? And do you think that talents shows up there because of Richt or is it the state of Georgia that has the talent? Georgia and Florida high school talent, make the SEC the best conference in the nation, but for a long while it has not helped either school in Georgia be the best.

GA p funk: the most concerning aspect of what you post is the actual Linebacker play in those games. The offense lineman fired straight off the ball into the linebackers knocking them backwards. The defensive lineman made zero plays during this time.
The vandy game was horrible, the Vandy offense fired straight off the ball and wore the linebackers out. Never seen such distruction. Franklin is a top Offensive Coach and he put it to our defense. Thankfully the game came to an end when it did. What concerns me about our defense is good quality teams knock our linebackers straight back running the ball inside our tackles.
The key to pro football defense is forcing the ball to the sidelines as a 12th man. Does not seem to work at the college level as well. I am concerned about our 2012 defense because the first two years had improvement, but no where near dominate against QUALITY TEAMS.

That’s what it takes to win in the SEC. look at even the gators last NC, Tebow couldn’t throw, they ran the ball and had short passes and a great D. Don’t lose it on turn overs and special teams and you can win. It’s that simple! Fair play to Grantham. He’s done well, but you have to excel on both sides of the ball and the offense lacks that discipline. Also coaches don’t exist in a vacuum like the media. They rely on instinct and split-second decisions. At least one of our coaches has fire in his belly.

loyalty is wonderful, but I think most of us would agree that Richt’s firing of Martinez was not only justified, but made the defense better. One might argue that the players are better or that the schedule was easier last year, but I would submit that there was PLENTY of talent and experience on many of Martinez’ squads, but the defense wasn’t playing well. In Grantham’s first year, we had a BIG problem getting off the field on 3rd down, but you could see signs that the defense was getting better. In year 2 of the 3-4 and with 2 Noseguards ready to play, it took a giant step forward. Hoping year 3 shows continued improvement.

I pull for Georgia teams against the world, southern teams against the north, and truly believe we know football down here better than anyone, anywhere, especially these writers for the AJC. That said yall got beat by South Carolina in Athens last year, you play them in Columbia unless they get the SEC to change that too and I don’t see you winning that game and you are the better team. Then you are looking at Richt and his thin coaching staff for another year or so which ever year he is there you get worse. It ain’t the player, or the school it is your coach and that eventually will get better unless you hire one like him again.

Florida will be better. UT will be better. Auburn will be better. Not as easy as many of the nerds say. Of course the laugh here is that they fail to look at their own schedule. LSU is a damn good football program and side by side with Alabama and that battle will go on forever it appears. If Todd were to leave then all the discipline goes with him and you’re back to square one again. The Vandy guy is beginning to get on my nerves. A program that can’t sellout 38k at a home game should be given two years to expand the stadium or the SEC needs to cut their share down to 65%. Hell Miss State and Ole Miss are spending money trying to get to page .one and Vandy just takes the SEC dollars. To hell with their so called academic standing. Vandy is the SEC equal to welfare. Call me when CBS or ESPN has a Vandy professor conduct a class that draws 100K! The academic argument is used when you have nothing else to counter “you’re not worth a sheet at football”. Then again you can always have a new uniform for which Kentucky and Vandy change by the hour then again it worked very well for Maryland!LOL

Grantham has brought intensity to our defense which was really lacking. The chop block on Kwame is what started the altercation with franklin. No problem here, he was only sticking up for his players. The choke sign at florida was unacceptable though. I think Grantham brings the emotion and fire that Richt lacks. Top 3 defense nationally next year with 3 first team all americans. Jarvis Jones, Alec Ogletree, Bacarri Rambo

you guys are a hoot! I give you a hardtime but it’s just as Nick Dundee said “just some kids having some fun”. UGA’s big problem is lack of discipline and it’s easy to see just by the way the team conducts themselves on the sidleine during games. Those not playing act like thugs when things are going well and that is on the HC! It shows in the arrest and other off the field issues. Every program will have an event or two but UGA is a yearly event and you know that. I had to laugh at the salary of the weight staff at UGA! The weight program is serious business but UGA isn’t treating that that phase like it carrys that much weight. Look at the Alabama players in uniform compared to the Dogs! You loose in the weight program then you will get your azz beat on the field and that is plain and simple.
GT…with no more talent than Tech has I don’t see how the defensive folks can get a real picture from the scout team each week. The offense gets the advantage each Saturday due to the opposing team can’t create the speed of the option so that is a big +. However the Tech defense is behind the 8 ball trying to get a good read on how to stop the opposing offense. Nick Saban wants 85 good players on his roster and that is damn hard to do these days but that is his goal and you saw on NSD just how much he does believe . I would think Tech might have 50 decent players with the rest not so good yet the scout team has to come from that other 35 plus walkons. That has to be difficult for Groh and staff to overcome.

In response to Wet Willie…
My opinion the reason why Tech has a hard time against a pro-set offense is the fact that during practice his defense does not get much time practicing against it. The offense will always get more reps in to prepare for the game and so the defense sees the run more thatn a passing attack. Hence, when you play a team with a heavy passing attack they fail. Just my opinion.

We seem to have more bodies than I first thought we had. Just getting them ready for SEC play is the key. If they can some how gell before the Mizzou game it could be a good year.
How ever, I believe that SC will throw so many different defense schemes at them that it could make their heads spin. That O Line will be key. Once Murray has to scramble and has to make quick decisions with the football, that’s when it goes down hill. Plus, we all know how tough it is to play in Columbia.

I wish the offense would bring back more bubble swings and sweep plays. I also wish we would install the pistol formation. It seems like when the run game isn’t working we have nothing but the traditional shot gun formation to go to. It kills me when we aren’t running the ball that bobo still calls play action even though the defense knows we have to throw it. We need more diversity in the offense. We have to many good skill players we just need to get it in their hands quick and let them do their thing.

Nothing like the fresh optimism of dawg fans before the regular season crushes them. Dawg’s defensive stats were good but its pretty misleading. They were good because they played a horribly weak schedule in the watered down east. The few decent teams that they did play like Boise and LSU racked up 35 and 42 points against UGA. Frankly I’m not impressed given that. Plus a middling big 10 team took it to the dawgs in a bowl game. Shameful. Just shameful. Good thing is that the dawgs have another weak schedule this year in avoiding bama, lsu, and Arkansas. They had Bama but the schedule realignment with 2 new teams coming in saved the dawgs. Don’t you just know the dawg fans are breathing easier knowing they missed a major bullet like Alabama.

Maybe Bobo can find some footage of Dooley’s Dawgs running that ball. Dawgs utilized the toss sweep to perfection in those days. When they ran a draw play they lined up and gave the back a few steps to get going instead of the play where Murray looks like a statue holding the ball and making the running back come and get it. By then defenders are already in backfield. Bobo can also watch footage of the way Drew Brees runs the draw.

Everyone is saying how he has turned a corner and really understands what it means to be a rb for the university of georgia and the preperation that goes into that. IC has all the talent in the world and i really hope he has turned that corner. I think we can thank mr. marshall for a lot of this. I have a feeling that Richard Samuel is going to be our fullback and if that is the case i think you will see a lot more handoffs to the fullback. Zander didn’t look bad on the couple runs he had last year either but the one where he fumbled but got it back sums up why they didn’t get more oppertunities.

I like the job that Todd Grantham has done with the defense. We lost to SC, LSU and MSU because of turnovers. Turnovers create momentum for the opposition and elevate them too another level.
Against SC, their offense only scored 24pts(7pts were a result of Crowell’s fumble). Ingram scored on a fate punt and their defense scored 14 points on 2 of Murray’s turnovers.
Against LSU, we kicked to Honey Badger. As a result, he scored a td: LSU goes in @halftime with the momentum. 1st series of the 2nd half Murray fumbles the ball deep in their territory. A few plays later LSU score a td. LSU maintain momentum and psychologically manhandle the DAWGS.
Against MSU, our defense and special team scored 9 points and the offense only scored 7 points in the 1st half. The defense held the Startans scoreless @halftime(16-0).
In the 2nd half the momentum shift towards the Spartans when Murray’s pass was intercepted. That led to a MSU touchdown. Own Aaron Murray’s next pass interception @their own 38, Darqueze Dennard returned it for 38 yards for a td. I believe that play killed any momentum the dawgs may have had left.
Until Mr Richt start holding Aaron Murray accountable for his poor decisions the way he holds his runningbacks accountable, the momentum will always favor the other team. I’m keeping my fingers cross that he will make better decisions this season and that they will run the ball more in the power-i formation. I don’t think their is a team own our schedule that can score more than 1 touch on own defense this season.

@GTBob… every loss we had last year with the exception being boise our offense and special teams gave up a lot of pts. I am not blaming it all on AM but yes a lot of his mistakes cost us pts. at the worst time. So yes i believe the defenses true scoring average would be less if not every point that is put on the scoreboard was attributed to the defense because that is exactly the case.

Yada, yada, yada. Easily the most under acheiving program in the history of college football. With the talent pool in thes state, to have only won one national title, and that one coming way way back in 1980, would be laughable if it wasn’t so pitiful. You win in the SEC with defense AND a running game. Richt and Bobo, two former QB(s) who simply parrot one another, will never understand this. Those two have managed to put together easily the worst offensive line depth EVER. And that’s saying a lot. There’s absolutely no excuse for the program to be in this condition. Michigan State?! With Richt’s calm game-day demeanor, we need a fireball DC. Even if he DOES go a little overboard at times, it fires up the team and there is seldom any real harm (like I could give a sheet about James Franklin’s feelings).

Quite frankly, Grantham has more to work with at UGA as compared to Groh, and Grantham has done a good job of improving their defense. If Grantham gets the defense up to speed, then UGA could be dangerous, but the inept coaching staff and cocky fan base will undermine any moves toward a national title.
PJ is not placing enough emphasis on defense as opposed to his spread option offense. Gailey handed PJ some top-level talent before he left, which proves Gailey was not bad at recruiting or installing his defense schemes with Womack.

The Housing major focuses on the socio-economic aspects of housing. Special emphasis is given to housing needs and the manner in which the family, the private sector, and government policy respond to those needs. The program features an in-depth study of housing finance and the range of housing alternatives. The program may also be used as preparation for graduate study or as a pre-professional degree. Students may choose an emphasis in Residential Property Management which prepares students to work with diverse groups in property management. Coursework includes sales (leasing), accounting, development, human resources, technology services, legal issues, training, and management.

Now, divide the total (155) by the number of games (4) and the “average” point per game scored on ga is 38.75. But, since decimals are not used in scoring, we’ll round up (.75 is more than half) to 39.
39 average points per game to ranked teams. SEE? Even you should understand.

All 53 schools for which football SAT scores were available had at least an 88-point gap between team members’ average score and the average for the student body.
Schools with the highest admissions standards, such as Georgia Tech, the University of Virginia, the University of California-Berkeley, UCLA, and the University of North Carolina, had the biggest gaps between the SAT averages for athletes and the overall student body.
Football players performed 115 points worse on the SAT than male athletes in other sports.
The differences between athletes’ and non-athletes’ SAT scores were less than half as big for women (73 points) as for men (170).
Many schools routinely used a special admissions process to admit athletes who did not meet the normal entrance requirements. More than half of scholarship athletes at the University of Georgia, the University of Wisconsin, Clemson University, UCLA, Rutgers University, Texas A&M University and Louisiana State University were special admits. . . At Georgia, for instance, 73.5 percent of athletes were special admits compared with 6.6 percent of the student body as a whole.
The newspaper studied 55 of the countries largest public universities and found that the preferences given to special admits at many schools was disproportionately favoring athletes, particularly football players. For example, in 2004 the University of California reported that 95% of freshman football players on scholarship were special recruits while 47% of all freshman athletes on scholarships were special admits. In contrast, only 2% of all freshman students were special admits. At the University of Georgia and Texas A&M University, 94% of freshman football players were special admits.

Can’t really blame the Puppies defense for the crap situations that their offense put them in. They also gave up two more STs TDs in those games as well. That averages out to about 2.5 TDs per game that the offense was directly responsible for and .5 TDs per game that STs were directly responsible for. WTF…Maybe your the one not following me here..Lets go back to my point of why the defense averaged giving up that much a game against those 4 teams. How about looking inside the numbers of why it happened instead of assuming the defense sucks against ranked teams.
Average the first half totals of all 4 games and give me your average. Wait Ill do it for you….lets see 14,14,7,0…..Okay now that equals 35 my little bright student. Im sure you prob knew that.
so 4 divided in 35 is………..no thats not right WTF.. it’s 8.75. lets round it to 9 pts. Ouch that means those second half numbers must be bad. But lets look no further to the Michigan State game to see a 16-0 halftime lead was blown not by the defense, but by the stupidity of the offense. Don’t let your hatred blind you…The moral of the story. ..Todd Grantham has a very good defense that will be even better this season with even more depth added to it.

Calculating the differentials for offensive t/o’s and ST’s malfunctions, that means that Grantham’s D gave up 28 pts/gm against top ranked opponents last season. The Dawgs gave up 20pts/gm on the season avg, meaning that they allowed about 1 more td/gm on defense against top ranked opponents than their season avg with differential for offensive turnovers added.

Statistics are fun! WHooooeeeee. Let’s look at some other statistics!!!
UGA- Top Opponent Ranking- 2, 8, 9, 11
GT- 19, 21, 22
UGA record vs FBS winning opponents- 4-4
GT record vs FBS winning opponents- 3-4
UGA defense allowed 300 yds/gm and 4.74 yds/play vs FBS winning programs
GT defense allowed 388 yds/gm and 6.8yds/play (yikes!) vs FBS winning programs
So, with those statistics, the Bugs played a weaker opponent schedule, had a worse record against those better opponents, and allowed a full drive more/game than that overrated Todd Grantham defense. They also lost (31-17) to those overrated Mighty Mutts.

You Alabamians are obsessed with Georgia’s rise in the SEC and feel like it’s your Duty to Denigrate and Deny any improvements UGA has made as a football team. It wasn’t that long ago that the SECe ruled the football world. Where was Alabama then??? The SECe is on the rise, with Georgia in the lead. You didn’t even win your DIVISION, LOL! Georgia will win the SECe again this year and I doubt we’ll be playing Alabama in the CG. You don’t need to worry so much about the Doggies. For once, you should worry about winning you own division. Every other team in the SECw has a little class except Alabama. Your same old negative postings by the same old posters proves this. You shouldn’t even be thinking about UGA unless we’re playing each other. Did you understand that or does it even matter? Today the avg is 3.91 yet WT is only 106. All that money printing and defacing the dollar is coming home to roost. Why? Because obuma’s stimulus was terrible and very little to grow the economy. His policies forced ben to print a gazillion dollars. Watch what happens when WT goes to 140 a barrel. Prices will avg over $5 and many states with high taxes like Ca and Ny will have prices over 6. With mine being sweet in the first cooking process I like a Vinegar base BBQ sauce to put on the meat as it finish cooks. If you like the tomato bases wait until later in the cooking process so as not to burn the sauce on the meat too early

Kingdaddy, again, as always you’re right. I mean we stand to win our 2nd Fulmer Cup 2012 – a year with 1 team of the 12 regular season games who made Top 25 for 2011, and home games vs all losing record opponents except hapless Georgia tek, like they matter in the all cupcake conference with no top team in years.
This crud that no one at The University of Georgia has one word to say on this, when THEY are the VERY ONES to leak the story, obviously, is a poor attempt at a cover-up. That, too, will backfire, as they only are delaying the inevitable. When they do announce the Suspensions, that will just be ANOTHER DAY OF BAD PRESS for a team who has lost 9 games in a row to teams who made it in the top 25 and for a team who has lost 7 games in a row to teams who made it in the top 10 – all the way back to 2006. 2006 season by the way, was 7 seasons ago now this up-coming 2012 season with no SEC Championship, no top 10 team beat.
Aaron Murray and Todd Grantham have not beat a 10-Win Team yet. In fact, they neither have beat a team who even made it to a 9-Win team.

Kingdaddy, I will not be 2-faced about discipline. I will not come in here and discuss how Georgia tek for 1st offense drug abuse, does nothing, because this is not the 1st Offense and Suspension for either of these 2.
I will not be 2-faced and come in here and discuss how Georgia tek has put their assistant tennis coach on Administrative Leave With PAY, and not point out that Mark Richt has given out 31 Scholarships to play football for 2012, none of the 31 of whom will play against Mizzou in Game 2.
I will not come in here and be 2-faced about how great we are as a football program # 11 all-time in wins, and defend us being in fact # 21 in wins after 2005 when 2005 was now this up-coming 2012 season 8 seasons ago.
I will not come in here and be 2-faced about how I like Mark Richt, and I truly do, and do like the RICHT-0-PHILES and have NOT ONE OF THEM POST ONE SINGLE POST while they leave that to everyone else about yet 2 more Secondary Players kicked-off, suspended, transferred out, arrested and otherwise nothing but BAD PRESS.
Mark Richt is a good guy. Mark Richt is a Christian. Christians turn the other cheek and in Mark Richt’s case, kicks back-ups off the team for lesser offenses and fewer repeat offenses, while giving his starters preferential treatment in punishment. I will not come in here and be 2-faced about it. The players on other teams are working their tails off to live up to their Scholarships, and truth be told, there are 2 and a half here for every 1 of the 31 now gone for Mizzou who are working their tails off too to live up to their part of their Scholarship.
THE PROBLEM ?
40 percent of the Scholarships given to play Mizzou, who has done better in wins after 2005 than Mark Richt has, are now not going to play against Mizzou. 78 on Scholarship today. 31 Scholarships Mark Richt gave out to play this Mizzou game, are now not going to play against Mizzou – including the entire Secondary.
So, let’s go run into the AJ-C blogs and brag how great we are # 6 of just SEC teams now for 2012 season in wins after 2005. Oh, and let’s claim that anyone who is
FED UP WITH IT
is instead a Georgia tek fan. Yeah, that’s it Morgan Fairchild is my wife; I invented the Internet; Alabama is scum to covers all this up; it only matters what the rank was at game time in game 2 when South Carolina was listed in both the AP Poll and the Coaches’ Poll in 2007 at game time, yet ended up making neither with their 6 wins 6 losses 2007 not even in a bowl game; we are just so great – we do it right over-signing with 109 signed to Scholarships for our 85-man limit with 78 on Scholarship and now
31 we ran-off or suspended who should’ve played Mizzou.
I will NOT be 2-faced about it, nor will I run and hide like the RICHT-0-PHILES all night long, like they didn’t hear about it, when NONE of them go to the games anyway.

Richt can suspend the whole team if he wants, and it is not going to change the expectations from the people who matter. Brandon Smith being arrested for drugs spring break, flunked drug test last fall, minimum 6 game suspension. Rambo, minimum 6 game suspension for his second failurer, ogletree one theft charge and now drugs – should be released from the team. Love Coach Grantham for his passion, but it is his knowledge that is getting this job done. In the past, many from our LB group, as well our Secondary were badly out of place. We thought we were too small at the corners or just playing not smart. It was all about Willie putting guys out of postition, and it showed as we were once lit up for way too many points.
So it pays to bring in the right guy, as well pay for him. Grantham is a quality guy, and knows how to manage his players.
As for our HC and his management, well that is greatly under question. More players acting like fools, plus more suspensions coming. If we have four or seven caught dope smoking or worse (Say Crack Smoking) then we have four to six times that amount. So say we have 20 to 30 that are off somewhere else most of the time. Would this be representative of the general public, the high school systems, as well the culture of the players coming out of some of these areas?
If these players had to wait till there were seniors to graduate and go into the NFL, then they would use some common sense and not do the dope thing. Since they know they are two or three and done, they do what they want because they are here and gone, as well could care less about a degree. So four starters are gone, and you know there will be more as it is only March.

Todd Grantham is not to blame for the fact that Mark Richt did not kick off his Starters like Mark Richt did his back-ups.
Todd Grantham did not give up all the points Aaron Murray gave up fumbling and throwing interceptions in every key situation against every team who made the top 25.
Todd Grantham was, as you know, criticized by Mark Richt at the Vandie game – for example.

You know you have a problem when the AD is asked to handle the situation instead of the HC! Duron Carter has been at Alabama for over a year( seems like 4 years) and 1st it was grades from Juco and now he’s been suspended by Nick. His Dad spends a lot of time in T-town but really football doesn’t mean that much to a spoiled player that he will do the right thing. The fact is we have about 6-8 more years of college football before thug players and coaches will ruin what a lot of great coaches and players created over the past 100+ years and that my friends is just damn sad. The coaches can only do so much and trying to teach kids what they should have learned at home is asking a lot. This is just a society problem that will only get worse. The “let everyone play two innings was bullshit from the get go”. Give Richt a break on this one for this is only ignorance and nothing more.

Tampagator,
The facts speak otherwise. During Saban’s first year and a half 7-8 players were arrested. The Tuscalossa News even did a series of articles asking if Bama players were being singled out for arrest by the TPD. What started it was when Rashad Johnson was arrested for brawling inside a bar and a 5 minute video of his “brawling” completely vindicated him and charges were drop.
There’s no protecting Bama players. Currently 3 or more Bama players are under team suspension for breaking team rules and may never play again including our most promising wideout Duron Carter-son of NFL hall of famer Cris Carter.
The reason only 1 Bama player has been arrested in the past 1 and a half is because Saban has instilled a sense of discipline and expectations that other programs simply do not have. Screw up and embarrass the team and the university and you are gone. End of story. When you look at our players both on and off the field one thing comes to mind- discipline. And we will not apologize for Saban running our program with an iron fist and a sense military style discipline that keeps our players out of the headlines.

I would like to chim in here, and say this. I am an ex player, a grad of UGA , successful in life, as well appalled at how little respect, and control there is in Athens.
I have sent the e-mails to the AD, Greg. Have voiced my solutions which included a person who administers the punishments (Not Coach Richt), and if you think Saban is that person you are wrong. Nick hardly talks to players. His staff, as well his key outside the staff members who are not coaches watch, act, and deal with the players who cannot cut it. Those there fall in as soon as they come on campus. The expectations are off the chart at Alabama, and the current players enforce most of the rules. Yes BIG BROTHER with a BIG STICK. So you do not hear about this at Alabama because they take all this very seriously.
Saban talks to few, on the plane talks to no one. Has an ego that is as big as the state of Alabama. He is not worried about what his Sunday School Class thinks when he speaks on or of the record. Players there would have to move from the state if they embarrased Alabama, and the same goes for Auburn. Now tell me, are we or do we have that type of State where we expect this high level of commitment to The University of Georgia. I say NOT, and evidence is in the system. Coach Richt cannot do this by himself, and again Saban does not have to do any of it.
Dooley never raised his voice, did not have to say a thing, if he spoke your name you were oh no. As for who was Dooley’s sideline men, well Coach Kasey was one, as well others not on the staff. Today with a sue happy society, as well a media that looks each day for a story, there is plenty to cover. We wait for stupid to show himself, and man does he know how to not be a student first. As for an athlete second, NOT as there are certain characteristics that distinguish a high level athlete from a want to be athlete. Georgia has had few players recently (last six to eight years) that meet this criteria.
I will be in Tuscaloosa the next month, and will play golf with may in their program. They have already said, “see you in the Dome”. That may change as we look to be the laughing stock of college football, as well the SEC. The Evil Genius is having great fun with this. At least he is through with Garcia, and now watches as Georgia self inflicts wounds upon wounds.
What will 2012 be like, just like when we were the pre-season # 1, and that team lost there. Prediction is we lose 3 or more with the morons we have playing for us.
We have the players, but the players dod not have much upstairs to help their own cause. Seriously, how in the heck did they get into UGA, as well who on the staff is picking/recruiting these players. Can someone do a study on who do these plays belong to as a Georgia coach that once recruited them. That may be one place to go, as well hire some men to put the fear of God into our Program.
These players fear nothing, and as on response says, they dod not respect the game, the University, their place on the team, the HC, and their families. Ugly is us……………when will Athens get it? It sadness me, but truth is truth.

When Mark Richt allowed 12 players I know of that failed the drug test prior to Florida last fall play and then only punished 3, this is what the final results are, the THUG U assylum members with what is turning into possibly having a THUG Asst COACH, hire a S & C coach from a college sexual assault on children and he was their and knew, now we entertain hiring a behind the wheel DRUNK as a coach and mentor. WTF

Maybe they are scared of Saban at Bama…..but they become less scared (Dre Kirpatrick for example) immediately after they leave. Hard to imagine that someone smokes weed immediately after they leave and not while they are under someones “scary eye.” Most people who smoke weed do so socially and regularly. I find it hard to believe that Dre Kirpatrick did not smoke while he was on campus under Saban. But maybe some other school’s less saintly athlete influenced him suddenly to do so…..NOT.

Since Dooley was at UGA, thru the Ray Goff era and Donnan’s era and CMR/ BVG and up to now, UGA really lacked a fiery competitor as D Co ordnator. BVG was that before he left. Tow years UGA had him? Down hill it was for UGA after he left.
CTG is THE DEAL and the more I think about it, CTG ought to be the number one choice as UGA HEAD COACH if/when CMR leaves. Why not? HE LIVES and BREATHES SERIOUS , HARD NOSED FOOTBALL, SEC style.
Guys like CTG are hard to find. UGA has proved that since Dooley left and the old Erskine Russell days.
CTG IS the real deal.

Regarding Rambo and the rest of these clowns, let’s face it….they are just plain stupid. They do not have the mental faculties to gauge behavior = consequences. Using the old ‘well, they are just kids’ excuse is equally stupid. I was a kid once, and when a golden egg was laid in my hand, I knew NOT to flush it down the toilet. Oh, by the way, I did not have any easy time growing up either. Impoverished background or not these kids simply do not have the intellectual capacity to make good decisions much less appreciate opportunity. They may belong on a football field, but they certainly do not belong at a university or classroom. That’s part of the problem; they can’t appreciate what they cannot understand. If I sent my dog on a full ride to UGA, he would have a similar outcome as most of these “student/athletes” do. It’s just not in ole Fido’s DNA to reasonably understand what is happening around him on a college campus or any academic institution for that matter….he just wants to chase balls.
