You would think it fitting being a Falcons fan. Had this harsh penalty been blasted upon your beloved Dirty Birds, you would be singing a different tune. Don’t even try to make the argument that they don’t do it, either. I’m sure it happens on almost every team… I’m not saying it happens on every team… If this penalty sticks, the NFL needs to retroactively suspend Bill Bellichick for one season, and then investigate EVERY team in the NFL for both videotaping other teams AND running pay for performance programs. Every coach would be suspended for a year! Roger Goodell needs to realize that he actually works for the fans. If it weren’t for us, he certainly wouldn’t have the cush job with a great paycheck and benefits that he has. He is ruining the NFL (not just for the Saints, BTW). It barely resembles the game that it was even ten years ago. Mr Schulz, if you would like to respond, you have my email address.

While many other teams may have similar systems in place with this bounty program or similar programs it was time for the NFL to do something about it and unfortunatly the SAINTS will and are the poster child for this action. The NFL is currently being sued by former players for knowingly not doing anything against or to prevent concussions after years of research….so just imagine the fallout years from now if this came to light…so rather than sit back on idle I am pleased they are doing something about it and even MORE PLEASED THE SAINTS are taking the FALL. I don’t think that Goodell went far enough.
Payton should have recieved a $1million fine along with his 1yr. suspension(a 2yr. suspension might have been warranted).
Loomis the GM should have gotten the same as Payton.
Williams, the dirty sob, should be kicked out of the NFL, forever.
The saints organization should lose their 1st round draft choices for the next 4yrs., at the very least.
The organization should be fined at least $5million.
The organization should have their salary cap lowered, by at least $20million a year, for the next 3 consecutive yrs.
Roger Goodell should fine himself $5million, for allowing this Dirty team, to play so dirty of a brand of football, as it has, ever since Payton has taken over running the team.

I only hope that Goodell will not back off of any of the light punishments he has given out, in this matter.

Now I am not a Saints fan but I would like to see the rules on this bounty. If it was paid for clean hits only, I don’t think it is quite as deplorable as the politically correct are saying. Hey anyone who is a football fan loved to watch “jacked up”, anyone who has played knows that the entire team when watching film goes nuts when someone is decleated or sent to the bench seeing stars after a big hit. I remember one of the Saints-Falcons games this year where one of our players (can’t remember who) got hurt very early in the game by getting his legs chopped out from under him. I recall feeling a bit strange about it, that it happened so early in the game, and replays made it appear that it was intentional, but the announcers didn’t say anything about it, other than it looked like it hurt. I’m sure there are plenty of examples where Ryan or Turner were targeted, which will come out in the continuing investigation.

NFL has no other choice. They are being sued out the wazoo by PREVIOUS players that were injured…. They are in court daily paying ex-players for claims from injury.So players sue the league… Goodell has to makethe game safer… period.. Interesting the Saints owner has been silent on the NFL punishment. If he is a moral individual he would fire the Head Coach, his assistant and GM. There have been a “few” Saints fans that I have been able to have real football conversation with but as a whole they are the most classless fan base I have ever seen. I even see on their blog calling for reinforcements to repudiate on non Saint blogs.

At any rate the Saints still win the division. It also means that we will have to excel at scouting to make the most of our late draft picks and rely more heavily on free agent signings. Sure the penalties hurt but…..its no worse than trading away a bunch of picks for a Wide Receiver!!!

Also we don’t know what “suspension” really means? Will S. Payton be able to communicate with the team at all? Either way because he empowered other coaches instead of doing everything himself…..they will be ready to defend the Division Title.

It’s good Sid is the ultimate policeman. Reality is this brings saints down to pack but our home tam has not done enough to get better. Falcons can take division but still need to improve on D line and O line. Not much done in free agency. Let’s hope there are some moves left maybe at draft time. A couple of moves and the division is ours. Not the best way to take the division but I didn’t see the saints fans crying tears when Vick went off to jail.

The punishment for the Saints is right in line for how Goodell has dealt with previous instances when he has been lied to. The guy is harsh so this is no different. With the insane amount of money he has fined players for hits, this punishment had to be severe for him to maintain any sort of credibility.I’m just glad it was’nt the Falcons.

Coaches, GMs, and League personnel have no recourse other than suing the League in Court. They do not have legal protection of a labor union. Louisiana is a right to work state, they only have rudimentary labor protections such as workplace discrimination (which is a joke in the South and most of the West)! Jeff question for you. I know teams sign contract and some are incentive based but are those incentives part of a teams’ salary cap. Inquiring by paying players bounties would a team be going over their salary cap?

I’m thinking he should’ve suspended him for a long enough period to make the Saints realize they need to fire Peyton…like maybe 3 years (the same amount of time this mess was going on & the same length of time the Saints were lying about it).

This is a disgraceful episode in the history of the NFL, and the punishment needs to be tough enough to discourage any team from ever doing anything like this again.

I also have a news flash for everyone… it’s everyone outside New Orleans who can’t let Katrina go. The people who live there roll their eyes everytime an announcer still brings that up. People have moved on with their lives.

Falcons fans are ridiculous.. yea that’s it, the NFL has let the Saints win the Superbowl 4 yrs after the storm, it was a conspiracy! Dont you idiots think that if there was a conspiracy it would have been in 06 when the Saints went to the NFC title game?

The only thing that has changed since Katrina is that the Saints win games now and are clearly better ON THE FIELD. This has been proven every way possible. 10-2 head to head, 5 playoff wins, and 3 division titles. You still better get used to looking up at the Saints in the NFC South, because if you’ll remember when the Pats were slapped in 07 all they did was go 18-0 and make the Superbowl.

Way back on page 1 of this blog I predicted that the Saints fans on here would be in full denial. I also expressed the hope that their number would be reduced. Well, they’re in full denial, no question. They’re also rationalizing, blame-shifting, finger-pointing, boasting (still), taking potshots at the Falcons, etc. What’s amazing to me is that the Saints’ violators have largely owned up to this, apologized, and accepted their punishment; it’s mostly the incredibly ignorant fans, including those visiting this Falcons blog, who continue to defend (and even brag about) their team’s criminal activities. They’re already wildly predicting victory over the Falcons and guaranteeing another SB win in ‘12. Of course, when they start losing next year–especially to the Falcons–you can count on them blaming the unprecedented punishment justifiably handed to them.

As far as my prediction and hope, one was accurate and other was dashed.

As a Falcons fan for over 35 years, I am saddened that we have to revel in the potential demise of a team in order to even have a chance at winning a division crown

It’s not the Saints they should be worried about. Tampa was a 10-6 team two years ago and they have retooled and improved through free agency and if the Falcants are celebrating the Saints punishment, Tampa & the surging Cam Newton led Panthers will send them to the basement in the division.

As long as CHOKE is the qb they will never win another playoff game.

They got away with it in the 2009 championship game because the NFL was giving the SB title to them. They wanted them to be the poster kids for the ‘comeback team despite all odds’. They were just stupid, arrogant liars that didn’t stop the bounty when your owner told them too. Kept on lying about it and this is what happened. Blame it on the coaches.
